    How about a most tickets sold for Christmas Movies when we hit December. Long before Jaws started the Summer Block-buster-Christmas was the big release time-The Poseidon Adventure-The Towering Inferno-the animated Lord Of The Rings(didn't do well-I know-I saw it in mostly empty theatres)-Close Encounters(more of a Thanksgiving release though)Star Trek-TMP etc. Would be interesting to see-guessing LOTR would make that list.

      @JohnMC61 5 років тому

      @@SeriousStriker When I saw your first comment Iceberg + Boat=...I was like...oh sh...that was Christmas. Even adjusting for inflation-it would still be Titanic-you are so right-that crushed everything . #2 thru #10 could be interesting but TFA and LOTR:Return of The King would both have spots as well..so there would be 7 more slots.

    I watched Forest Gump for the first time in decades with my son last week. I was surprised how much of the movie he was able to follow and how many of the references he was able to get, but my mind was absolutely blown away by how awful the effects were.
    I remember sitting in the theater when it came out and being unable to tell how they did that. I remember Zemekis saying in an interview about how the best special effects are the ones you can't see and I was nodding right along with him. But man, can you see those effects today.

    • @kstepko
      @kstepko 5 років тому

      Sean Henderson I bought an additional VHS that showed how the ‘amazing’ (at the time) special effects for Forrest Gump were done. Today, that would be a DVD extra. The floating feather ... the hurricane ... first Lieutenant Dan ain’t got no legs, then he had new legs ... what can I say? It was a simpler time.

    Given that the population of the US in 1975 was around 216 million, one can imagine what an event the New Hope must have been if it sold 142 million tickets. There were probably many, many people who watched it multiple times, but simply looking at tickets to population.... that's like two thirds of the domestic population buying a ticket each.

    Maybe it's just that it's the first movie I remember coming out in theaters, but it just seemed like such a Must-See in a way that Spider-Man and ID4 only seemed like an "ought to see."

    • @Peter_Cordes
      @Peter_Cordes 5 років тому

      @09mrmarshall - When an inventor employed by a corporation patents an idea, their name does go on the patent. e.g. look at some Intel patents for how their CPUs work; the names of some individual architects are on there. patents.google.com/patent/US5404473A/en?q=strings&assignee=intel&oq=intel+strings
      The inventors are listed separately from the "Current Assignee".
      And yes, the corporation that is paying the inventor for their inventing time generally owns the patent. Some companies pay employees an extra bounty for coming up with patentable ideas. But generally this is why companies employ people that design / create things in the first place, instead of just licensing patents from people that they *aren't* paying a salary to.
      It might be nice if there was some middle ground where an inventor got some stake in a patent automatically, but I'd hardly call the current situation "theft".

    Magnificent work Danny boy! You've crunched numbers for a long time extremely well. Now, I think it's time for a challenge. You should do an episode crunching negative numbers. Your wonderfully adept mind will make sense of this nonsense premise, and I can't wait to watch, as well as see Lon look at you in awe of your work (the way he used to look at you, before many episodes were made, and your brilliance became normal). Not saying the glory days are over by any means, but this will bring back some of the magic found when we first entered an all-new numbers world with you Dan. It'll be like going into a computer's mainframe, and seeing its world of nothing but 1's and 0's.

    The List of most tickets sold brought back so many memories-movie going was so much different and in some ways better back then. I was able to guess most of the list just because of how long the movies played in our theatres-like Grease was at one theatre until almost Thanksgiving here. ET played all the way through Christmas. My brother's and I started the line for Raiders Of the Lost Ark when the mall opened at 8am. We also started the line for The Wrath Of Khan and my brother walked 6 miles at 3am in the morning to start the line for Return Of The Jedi while my Mom and i and my other 2 brothers took the bus into the city and met him out there-peopel were a lot nicer in line back then as well. And it was fun talking to people in line. I don't know if they were Summer movies but The Ten Commandments played for almost a year and 10 with Bo Derek played for 8 months at our Village theatre. Thanks for the list Dan-love your charting...with an assist from Starbuck's Lon.

    'Jurassic Park' was No. 1 worldwide for a time, but never reached the top spot on the domestic chart, which is what the summer tickets sales chart is looking at. In the U.S., E.T. remained the No. 1 all-time box office earner until the Star Wars Special Edition came out in 1997 and gave Episode IV the title back that E.T. had taken from it 15 years earlier. About a year later, in early 1998, Titanic took the title, which it held until Avatar beat it in 2009. Then Star Wars The Force Awakens passed Avatar in 2016. (these are the years the milestones were reached, not the films' release dates).

    Great list of all time summer movies. Star Wars was no surprise, of course, as legend has always had it that its success actually killed a lot of movies that summer. I don't know how true that is given that held the top 10 from 77 were summer movies (and the number two movie, Smokey and the Bandit, came out the same weekend), but it would be interesting to look into.
    Also, I love that Lon mentioned TS Elliot in introducing the Catsdown! It's so weird that musical is based on a random book of his poems... Though not as weird as all of the connections it has to Logan's Run, that book being a big one.

    I remember years ago a UK TV channel did a Top 100 list of the films which sold the most tickets (in the UK, I think). Most of the top 10, if I remember correctly, were from the 1940s, before cinema was competing with TV; #1 was Gone With The Wind, but several of the others were ones I'd never heard of and I think I've never heard about since.

    While I don't share Dan's love of charts, I do sometimes enjoy crunching and analyzing numbers. I've been doing that with films that have grossed over a $Billion worldwide. When I was a kid in the 1970's and 80's, when it came to discussing Hollywood box office results, the mainstream media generally covered only domestic grosses. A movie was considered a mega hit when it grossed $100 million. In 1994, James Cameron's True Lies was released with a budget of $100 million. As budgets soared, the mark of a box office mega hit soared with it. Today, with many Hollywood films grossing more outside of North America than inside, it is the world wide box office that really matters. The mark of a mega hit is now (cue Dr. Evil voice) $1 Billion.
    In 1993, Jurassic Park became the first film to gross over $1 Billion. To date, 42 films have joined the more than $1 Billion club (5 the over $2 Billion club), with Toy Story 4 only $10 million away from making it 43. Of the 42 films, 3 were released in the 1990's, 4 from 2000 - 2009, 12 2010 - 2014 and 23 since 2015. The accelerated rate of films grossing over $1 Billion is not the only major trend. There is also the Disney of it all, and by all I mean the majority of it all.
    Of the 42 films, 22 were from Disney. Of the rest, 2 were Fox (now owned by Disney), 2 were Sony (1 of which was made by Disney/Marvel), 3 were Paramount, 6 were Warner Brothers (1 of which was made by New Line Cinemas) and 7 were Universal. The percentage of $Billion grossing films released by Disney is 52.38% or 57.14% if you include the Fox releases. In a couple of weeks after Toy Story 4 has joined the club the percentages will be 53.49% and 58.14% respectively.

    Of these films, nearly all were part of franchises. The Disney releases included 8 Marvel films, 3 Star Wars films, 5 Animated films (3 of which were from Pixar), 4 live action/photo realistic remakes of animated films, and 2 Pirates of the Caribbean films. Fox had Avatar and a Star Wars film, both of which are now Disney franchises. Sony had the most recent Spider-Man and James Bond films. Paramount had Titanic and 2 Transformers films. Warner Brothers had 3 films based on DC Comics, 2 films based on Tolkien novels, and a Harry Potter film. Universal had 3 Jurassic Park/World films, 2 Fast and Furious films, and 2 films in the Despicable Me/Minions franchise.
    If franchises are the life blood of a studio we can make some observations. Based strictly on $Billion franchises, Paramount is in desperate need of a transfusion, having only the Transformers franchise available to it. As for Sony, Far From Home was the first Spider-Man film in the $Billion Club and they did go to the right place (Disney/Marvel) for help producing it. Given that they are producing only a couple of Bond films a decade, we can see why they are desperately trying to take their Spider-Man IP and spin off ancillary characters into their own franchises.
    Warner Brothers and Universal seem to the healthiest non-Disney studios. WB is the only studio that has comic book IP that matches (or even exceeds) Disney's Marvel IP, though they have not yet exploited it as successfully as Disney. WB is also producing films based on Harry Potter, but not Tolkien. They are however developing a TV series based on that IP. Universal has the Fast and Furious franchise (now with spin-offs!) and Jurassic World. I wonder how long it will be before Vin Diesel is riding a t-Rex or a Velociraptor is driving a sports car in a Universal film? At least they have a successful animation department.
    Of course even if Universal and WB merged they would still be well behind Disney. Going forward it would seem we can expect in an average year 3 MCU films (though only 2 next year), either an Avatar or Star Wars film (in alternating years), a Pixar film, a non-Pixar animated film, and a live action/photo realistic remake of an animated film. There may of course be more than one film from one or more of the animated categories. There may also be some R rated Deadpool sequels, though I expect not every year. They may even produce an original film from time to time. I don't think they will be needing to revive the Pirates of the Caribbean films for a little while. Then again...

    This exercise was a very good example on how people has spent their free time across time. Back then there was no other visual entertainment option -I mean, there was the T.V., but it was not the same-. Today we have home video, streaming, videogames, even piracy, anything to make us stay at home insteas of going to the theater.

    VFX, by definition, is "any imagery that is created or manipulated for a live-action shot." Since The Lion King doesn't contain any live action shots (aside from that one shot, which didn't contain any VFX), then it technically can't be nominated for best VFX. The Jungle Book could be nominated because Mowgli was real and everything around him had to be simulated in some way. Now, if you say it's considered a live-action movie because the animation is meant to look live-action, then basically, movies like The Polar Express, Beowulf, Dinosaur, and Happy Feet are all considered live-action.

    Hell of a topic Dan. Definitely some I expected, but Jurassic World being there as the only 21st Century film is insane to me, especially with The Avengers (2012) just missing out.

    Dan and Lon, excellent job as always! I'm curious, in light of Good Boys opening this weekend above many box office predictions despite this year being a particularly difficult year for the genre, I'd love to see a deep dive on the comedy genre over the past few decades. Is this year an anomaly or are there years that have been like it? Was this year a sudden decrease in the genre or has this been building gradually over time? As a filmmaker & comedian who has & will continue to work heavily in this genre, I'm really interested in hearing your deep dive on the genre.

    Hey @DanMurrell
    Truly love the show, keep up the great work.
    I know you love a good deep dive into the numbers and also have a soft spot in your heart for the sleeper hits and not obvious box office successes or flops.
    My suggestion is that you do a deep dive on an upcoming episode on the movies directed by Alex Kendrick (War Room, Fire Proof, Courageous), movies that are of the genre of faith-based dramas.
    Thought it would be fun to see how well they do considered their budget and niche audience. Would be fun considering he has a new film coming out next week
    Just a suggestion.
    Best regards
    A truly happy Screen Junkie

    You should do a list of highest grossing (and highest BITS) franchises ever, per movie. So just because a certain franchise has more movies doesn't help it.

    In regards to Forrest Gump, we watched it in our US History class my junior year of high school to illustrate that time period and so the coach that we had as our teacher could go hang out with his buddies during class.

    Dan, I know that there's a whole lot of immeasurable factors (such as competition, release date, etc.) that affect box office performance, but I think that in addition to inflation / butts in seats, you can also factor in amount of time in theaters and US population, since those are quantifiable and objective. A lot of the older films hold huge, unbroken records when accounting for inflation, but I wonder if modern blockbusters become more comparable once you account for how much shorter time they play in theaters.

    I think the tickets sold metric really illuminates the different eras of 'Summer Blockbuster' distribution. The 70's, with local theaters wanting to keep a hit to squeeze every nickel from the run, versus the 80's and 90's with the rise of Multiplexes, and secondary distribution models (i.e. Video Stores, Broadcast/HBO licensing). The top 11-20 were only 11ish-million tickets apart
