Frozen 2 Sets Global Box Office Record | Charting with Dan!
Hosted by Dan Murrell (@MurrellDan)
Featuring Lon Harris (@lons)
#Charting #BoxOffice2019 #Frozen2
Dan, 3 months ago: “I’m going to try to understand Cats!”
Dan, today: “I’ve made a huge meow-stake.”
Love to see Dan enjoying his pre star wars time. He seems so in peace. For now.
This show is single-handedly sustaining the hype for the Cats movie
This and Jon Matteson's twitter (seriously, go look at it)
Dan thinks box office science is the most useless degree...
Laughs in Philosophy Degree
😂😭
Except for Medicine all degrees are pretty much useless. It's all about who you know.
Well I met someone once who got her Ph.D. studying the tsssss sound a gong makes, so philosophy doesn't sound too bad.
You guys are awesome and hilarious I did not expect this much traction on this comment
David Szaks and law
Dan literally just threatened us to see his movie because he’s literally taking notes.
Dan, the CATS reward is the CATS friends we’ve made along the way. I’ve enjoyed the hell out of the controller chaos and confusion these last couple months of Meowntdown and Meet a Cat.
Disney's going to hit $10B at the box office this year and account for probably somewhere between 40-45% of the total box office revenue for 2019.
MKSongbird
Hardly shocking...they lined up all the franchises so they can head to Disney+. Next year, we will hear the UA-cam experts say that Disney it’s in trouble as they will be lucky if they get 2 films over 1B
MKSongbird ☹️
@@aguzman222 People don't realize that Disney has so many branches. This is just movies we are talking about. They still have TV/streaming, merchandise, resorts, and especially theme parks.
"It's my charting and I'll do what I want to." Genius
A CGI Shrek live-action film would be the Hulk movie we deserved
Funny you say that, I remember when the 2003 Hulk came out, one of the reviews said that he looked like a pissed off Shrek lol
"it's my chart, and I count Lion King 2019" I do too Dan!
I count it on the charts, but not in my heart.
I don't. Lion King doesn't LOOK like an animated movie - which means that it didn't have to deal with the stigma against animation that plagues movies like Frozen and Incredibles. It makes more sense to compare it against other CGI-heavy films like Avatar and Endgame.
Dan: "I can smell the catnip, Lon."
Me: "I'm not sure that's catnip, Dan."
They did burn down the studio.....
@@Wild_D Quite true. Lol.
Burnt toast?!
We need Roth for at least one charting to meet a cat.
A local high school did “Shrek: The Musical” in 2016: I found Donkey horrifying. The costume reminded me of the rabbit in “Donny Darko”.
One amazing stat for Frozen 2’s opening that I haven’t heard people talking much about is the fact that it’s by far the biggest domestic opening for an animated film outside the summer-no other animated film has opened above $100K outside of the summer. Summer makes a big difference for kids’ films since kids are out of school and can hit Thursday night and Friday matinee showings that they couldn’t for Frozen 2. That could explain why it had such strong legs over the weekend versus its Friday and Thursday night takes. Imagine what this film would’ve taken if it had opened on the summer~
I get more and more nervous for Cats with each Meowntdown... I’m gonna see this movie purely based on the Meowntdown.
Me too
I gave both Frozen 2 and A beautiful day in the neighborhood my money this weekend. I enjoyed both.
So did I.
As did I
Omfg Dan’s face at a live action shriek 🤣
Pretty cool and all, but there's no way Frozen will outgross Gotti.
🤣😂
Gotti has too many 0's for frozen to overcome.
But Cats will
Another Disney box office update, Dan. Maleficent: Mistress of Evil is about to hit the break-even point of $475M with just $2M until it reaches it. So, it is a film that thankfully Disney was lucky to have avoid losing money, with their only money-loser being Dumbo
al patrickson never would have thought it would have made almost $500 million. Domestic failure but saved by overseas
Trying to analyze some of the Fox flops that Disney distributed notably Dark Phoenix and Terminator: Dark Fate(Fox distributed this outside of USA)
Maleficent did better in international market which thankfully saved Disney.
Also, about the Le Mans ‘66 title change - the director said in an interview on a UK podcast that they had legal issues using Ford and Ferrari’s trademarked names in a title so they changed it to Le Mans ‘66 since ppl are more familiar with that race in Europe. They had to add the “66” because there’s another film called “Le Mans.”
I think it's a much better title. Me and my friends all saw the trailer for the first time in a theater together. The consonance was looks great, terrible title.
I wondered if that would be confusing, because Le Mans is I think a fairly well-known movie.
"Ford v Ferrari" is just a lazy title. Are we really at that point where people won't go see anything unless they know something from the title?
I mean, you could call it "Race of the Century" or something else in that fashion. No need to cram in a bunch of brand names.
Mathias Hagensen yes , many good movies have not done well due to the title just look at the tom cruise movie live , die, repeat as a prime example .
The masses do not watch shows like this or watch a lot of trailers . The title is what draws a lot sadly
@@Maitch3000 But the story is not quite about the race. It's about Ford and Ferrari specifically, as that was the year in which Ford went full out in order to beat Ferrari, who as I remember (I was told this story by my dad a few times, so I may be wong) had been having some trouble in the 2 or 3 prior years, and in fact had been about to be sold to Ford.
Omfg Dan reading Jellicle Songs for Jellicle cats!! 😹
Also that still doesn’t explain the world completely 😹
If anything, it just brings up more questions.
The recent Lion King was definitely animated, they weren’t using real lions.
Gavin Smiley What?!?!?!
Am I wrong, we’re those real lions?
Gavin Smiley You are very very right. I was just making a poor attempt at humor.
Will be interesting to see , if it gets nominated for the animation Oscar . If it does , it might get more popular with effects artists and animators .
Garret Neal no worries, I do the same thing. It’s really hard to properly convey sarcasm when people can’t hear the tone of your voice.
You know why you're REALLY here. Don't worry: it starts at 18:44.
Watching "Charting with Dan" while eating Chipotle is my Monday night ritual. I was watching something else while eating, waiting for Charting to upload. Mom: I'm surprised you're not watching "Charting with Dan." (Yes, she knows what it's called.) 4 minutes later Charting was uploaded! 😀
Saw 4 movies this week.
Rank:
1. Ford v. Ferrari
2. Knives Out
3. Charlie's Angels
4. Frozen 2
Got my knives out ticket for sweet potato day!
I love watching them trying to put logic to the story of cats... THERE IS NONE. There is no lore. We have no idea if old deuteronomy can pick themself. We have no idea exactly what separates a jellicle cat from any other. It's a coke dream on stage. That is it's purpose.
It’s pure insanity. And it’s not even the weirdest thing ALW did. Yes, I’m talking about you, Starlight Express!
“That would be horrifying” Live action Shrek. 😅
Good luck with Never Surrender. Maybe you can get best per screen for next charting.
Dan is a professor for box office science
"Hunger games did peter out" subtle^^
Peeta not Peter
The original Frozen is trending on Disney Plus
"Jellicle cats" is how a British child would say "Dear little cats", same as "Pollicle dogs" is poor little dogs
Interesting! I was thinking "angelical"
“.....chart if I want to.....chart if I want to.......u would chart too if it happened to you.”
Ah, Lon. You forget about the Divergent series. The YA series with the biggest of drop offs.
Hey Dan, thanks to the meowntdown I entered and won the ticket lottery for the Nashville tour production and it was... unadaptable 😂 thanks for all the cats
We need a Cram It for the Meowntdown/Meet the Cats.
I openly yelped when Munkustrap appeared. He's my favorite cat in the production.
That some people would count this year's Lion King rehash as live-action is somewhat believable, but when the media touts the same thing, we're officially in cuckoo land
The SJU staff dressed as snacks and singing "Let's all go to the Lobby" would be more than worth the price of admission on its own.
Oh two popes, I thought two princes. Damn Spin Doctors
Looks like we’ll be getting Big Hero 7 soon.
My favorite video of the week. Please never skip an episode
Lon with the deep cuts Lebowski reference. The Dude abides.
Charts! Charts! Charts! Charts! Charts!
I just read this like that Ant-Man commercial of Paul Rudd and Michael Douglas shouting Ants! Ants! Ants! 😄
I’m curious to see how much Frozen 2 drops next weekend.
al patrickson I’m guessing about 45-50% so $65 million to 75 million
Being a holiday weekend and nothing new coming out to really challenge it I think it will barely drop off maybe 20% at most
On this week's episode of 'Charting with Dan':
Was ‘Frozen II’ able to *THAW* its way to #1?
Is ‘Ford v. Ferrari’ still *DRIVING* its way to the Top 5?
Was ’21 Bridges’ able to *CROSS* it’s way to the charts?
Is ‘Midway’ still *FLYING* around the Top 5 this week?
Hi I'm Dan Murrell and I'm Lon Harris
and this is 'Charting with Dan' on Fandom Entertainment
Josh Rivera - I adore this!
No reference to Mister Rogers?
Couldn't think of a Mister Rogers pun
Awful.
Josh Rivera Fair enough
We need a Meowntdown supercut
They promised one a couple weeks ago.
I can stop thinking about live action Shrek, what have you done! 🤣
Loved Dan taking the time to read out 'The Invitation to the Jellicle Ball!' I wonder if they will further explain the concept in the movie to really hammer it home for general audiences since it looks like the movie will also contain speaking.
Hi Dan! Hi Lon!
Thank you for another great show!
On Mondays we wear charts.
Completely forgot about that cat. 😆
I always check the runtime of Charting first... today: oh no! It's only 30 minutes of Charting 😣
I did not even know 21 bridges existed until I saw the trailer before Terminator. It was the only ad I ever saw. I do want to see it though.
The amount of money that WB is getting from Joker is amazing. The sheer amount of profit is staggering. A movie with the production of $55 million has made over $1 billion worldwide.
They were stupid though, and got a ton of production partners for the movie. Plus, they're contractually bound to giving Todd Phillips a big cut, as well. They made a motherload, but they'll only see a fraction of it
Rare feat that a movie with a production budget below $100 million will earn a billion dollars.
5:30 oh Lon did Hunger games Peta out!
I'm glad I got to meet Fred Sanford's favorite cat, Muscatel!
Everyone: Frozen 2!
Me: Zootopia 2?
Lon, Dan, you're already movie snacks just the way you are.
You didn’t hear it from me but there might be a “live action” (cough) CGI Shrek movie with a certain Wayne’s World actor in the works.
Dana Carvey?
RIP Gigantic 😢
F's in the chat
The only thing I foresee hurting A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood is that they seem to be cutting theaters quickly. The multiplex closest to me is showing it 5x per day right now, but is closing it after Wednesday to make room for Knives Out. That makes the next closest theater about 30 minutes away. They did something very similar with Jojo Rabbit where it played for a week. I wonder if that will become more and more common with movies that aren't as traditionally small.
What is the next video of charting with dan! Is?
I 100% agree with Dan that The Lion King is an animated movie. In fact I can't think of any argument for it not being so??
Why haven't gotten chatting this week yet.
I dont know
JELLICLE is the cat term for "Angelical." In one of Eliot's other cat poems, some dogs are POLLICLE (diabolical) pups.
Do you have a source? I read that it comes from "dear little cats" and pollicle dogs from "poor little dogs". As pronounced by a very young godson of TS Eliot.
Lion King 2019 IS an animated film. I agree with you Dan.
I wish you all the success for "Never Surrender"!
as I live in Europe I can not watch it, but I do send all my well wishes 🌌
Now I want to know what the Jellical Constitutional Procedure is!
A beautiful day in the neighborhoods budget is actually $25m
Would Dan and Lon be willing to do a special episode comparing the box office numbers of holiday movies throughout the years? ‘Christmas Charting’ could air on December 23rd and December 30th could be a comparison of the biggest movies of all different genres over this past decade.
We need a Galaxy Quest screening in Canada.
Cynical Canuck Several screenings across Canada - not just one or two screenings in Toronto and/or Vancouver.
Jellicle? Maybe it's a corruption of the word Angelical? Just a thought. Not that I've seen Cats.
Apparently it comes from "dear little cats" and pollicle dogs from "poor little dogs". As pronounced by a very young godson of TS Eliot.
Actually, it the final budget is 25 million dollars for A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood
Weirdest thing...on Friday for the first showing of "Frozen 2"(12:00 Noon CST) I was the only one there. I was sure the theatre was going to be full of parents with really young kids. It was so nice watching a movie with no talking,no one on their phones,no coughing and I think that really helped how much I liked "Frozen 2".
School is in session and people work . Next week Friday will be different
@@matthewheywood8532 You are right-I checked our theater for Friday and most of them are half full already, even the IMAX theater. I just found it odd because I go to the movies most Friday afternoons and like Zombieland 2 was almost sold out as was Joker. In fact Joker was close to a sell out the same time I saw Frozen 2. And there were lots of parents with their kids in the mall, But there was a 12:30 2D showing so they may have gone to that for $8 rather than paying the $14 for the IMAX theater.
Dan I made you that Idris Elba gif. you wanted i DMed it to you, and screen junkies. lol xo
pretty interesting that the top 5 animated openings are all sequels/remakes
The gross for Aladdin is incorrect Aladdin grossed 1050.5 Million
Gelicals is likely a shortened term of Angelical.
Apparently it comes from "dear little cats" and pollicle dogs from "poor little dogs". As pronounced by a very young godson of TS Eliot.
It's spelled jellicle so prolly not.
Happy Monday!
Holiday weekend in America not North America. Us in Canada have Thanksgiving in early October
Fun fact about foreign markets...
1 - Here in Argentina Frozen comes out on January next year because the holidays is the low season for children going to the movies.
2 - Ford vs Ferrari it's called "Contra lo imposible" (Against the impossible) which in my opinion it's the most generic ass title ever.
26 days!!! What i would give to go to the theatre to watch this weird ass movie with all of you...
I don't remember how you track it, but will the Episode 9 totals count toward 2019 year charts, even though it will be running into the new year?
Yes, the 2019 top 10 chart is for 2019 releases, and includes money they make in 2020. (Meanwhile, the 2020 charts will not have Rise of Skywalker etc on them.)
21Bridges is an updated version of the Negotiator.
90min action pack matinee 👍👍
A live action remake of Shrek would make sense considering Shrek was made to make fun of Disney, and what has Disney been doing a ton of?
so those are counted as and for days?
you know, if you expand the showing to outside the US you can have better charting numbers
Question: How successful are MCU actors in non-MCU movies after their MCU debut?
I see a lot of modest successes, but not a lot of big hits.
Frozen 2 is really - really good, I can watch Ford v Ferrari peacefully
Lion King remake is going down harder than Mufasa ;)
What ? It made a billion dollars
I didnt know 21 Bridges came out already
Is Who Framed Roger Rabbit an animated film?
lawnjart16 live action/animated meaning
a combination between both we dont see many movies like that these days
Think 'Space Jam'... yes it has animation, no you wouldn't call it an animated film.
I'll be honest, was wondering when Munkustrap was being introduced in Charting with Dan considering who that cat is 😅
Looking forward on seeing Knives Out, Jumanji Next Level and Farmageddon: A Shaun The Sheep Movie.
I would buy that box-office software Dan is using. Hopefully it will become available for sale.😁
Dan, the worldwide total for the 2019 Aladdin is actually 1.051 billion dollars. I know you have to use thenumbers.com because of BoxOffice Pro recent updates but you have the info wrong of the Aladdin worldwide total. Joker needs 16 million more to outgross Aladdin. Hope you can hear me about the charting info of the worldwide total.
Thumbs up for meowntdown
I want a degree in Box Office Science
*sad can’t see tomorrow*
