    A strategy that I think theater chains can adopt to encourage more viewing of the smaller films is to have different ticket pricing for different films, preferably based on budget. I might not have financial issues with watching a lot of films, but it still feels kind of odd to me that a huge expensive fancy blockbuster like Spider-Man costs the same amount of money to view as a much cheaper film like Yesterday or Midsommar. I read somewhere that ticket sales for smaller films skyrocket on $5 Tuesdays and similar discount days, so this might be a viable strategy in a market with increasing bigger budget gaps.

    • @Raymanta82
      @Raymanta82 5 років тому

      💯 agree. Even a small discount would reflect both actual comparative audience interest.
      Tickets Sold = Interest
      If upcharges (like 3D) reflect the level of enjoyment people want from their movie going experience, then discounts only make sense.

    • @willcarlson1120
      @willcarlson1120 5 років тому +4

      Purely anecdotal but this seems true to me working at amc. Midsommar, MIB international, childs play are some movies that have been incredibly crowded on tuesdays and not so crowded on other days

    • @albericponcedeleon2696
      @albericponcedeleon2696 5 років тому +5

      I would also argue for better marketing and distribution. Some of the smaller movies are barely marketed and I've missed out on some great movies because I don't feel like driving 75 minutes for a 100 minute film and then an additional 75 minutes back when I have two theaters that are 10-13 minutes away each. Maybe doing a "tour- like" distribution where these smaller movies play for like a week or two on select theaters and then switch to another set of theaters for weeks 3-4 and switch once more for weeks 5-6 and so on?

    • @garretneal1875
      @garretneal1875 5 років тому

      That’s a really interesting idea! I wonder how much that is affected by the subscription services from companies like AMC and Regal. If you’ve already payed for everything up front, does that make it easier to go for the smaller stuff? Although the people who can afford to pay for the subscription may be people never objected to paying for everything anyway.

    • @garretneal1875
      @garretneal1875 5 років тому +2

    11:33 It's so refreshing that you guys leave your movie insider bubble and realize that going to the movies is rare for a lot of people and may only happen 1 or 2 times a year. You bring that up a lot which I appreciate. I know this may sound so obvious to some, but there are some people who don't realize this.
    Subscriptions like AMC A-List (the only one that seems to be working on a large scale, to my knowledge.) help get more people to the movies more frequently, but $20 a month is still a decent amount to a lot of people, especially for something like entertainment. (That's not counting any theatre snacks if they choose to buy some.)

Avatar made $2,777,223,601 before closing on 8/8/10 and it reopened on 8/27 to add $10.7M to its total cume. EG is now $4M above that at $2,781,212,415. As far as the flagging performance of comedies: I think one factor in that is how Marvel has kinda perfected the big-budget action-comedy, and that could be eating into regular comedy business.

      But this is a box office show and they never seem to say anything but “it’s going on a long time” as if there’s no analysis to be had. Seems weird that one could be so into the subject and not into the highest grossing movie of all time race. An aligned launch graph to show the differences in trajectory to get here or an extrapolation of the future or analysis on the odds would be welcome.
      They haven’t captured the many twists this saga has taken like everyone calling it done a couple weeks ago before the expansion really showed its legs
      Seems like they’re only looking at the surface which would seem boring for a lot of things that he goes more in depth with and makes interesting

    Like it or not, Disney played the LOOOONG game, really. She always had a LOT of concerned about brand perception, thing other studios did not. Now they have massive nostalgia to cash in, associated with good marketing and bussiness decision on buying companies that appeals to different demographies. She has the classic fairy tales for kids, has the most famous super heros, has star wars for the older demographies. I don't like monopolies, buy Disney had some brilliant marketing and business strategies so far, hard to deny their success.

    I love Dan and think he's on point all the time. BUT c'mon, Aladdin is one of the MOST beloved classic Disney movies. It shouldn't be so surprising that's it's made almost 1 billion. Beauty and the Beast made 1.2 or 1.3 billion. So Aladdin can at least make a billion.

    That money argument whilst fair is a little broader than most think. For instance a friend thought it was odd i've seen 15 movies this year and said " gee that's a lot of money." 15 dollar tickets where i go so (with concessions on occasion) i've spent around 200-250 at the cinemas which out of context seems a big amount, however i went for birthday drinks with friends and spent 70 dollars on the one night and I know plenty of people who do that a lot more and spend a lot more. I guess the point I'm trying to make is that we all if fortunate enough spend money on things that we don't need it's just that some things seem to be more acceptable to spend money on than others. Frankly i'd rather see a movie than get drunk but that's just me.

    • @mathsalot8099

      As a single income family of 4, trying to pay a mortgage, utilities, transportation, etc. it's a much bigger question than going to a few movies vs getting drunk with friends. You are right, money is a whole lot more complicated than basic sums. We have about $50 a month budgeted for "entertainment." That includes our streaming services, eating out, and the occasional movie. In a year that adds up to $600, but trying to budget it among 4 people over 12 months makes it seem very small.
