Rise of Skywalker: How Does It Stack Up? | Charting with Dan!
Hosted by Dan Murrell (@MurrellDan)
Featuring Lon Harris (@lons)
#Charting #BoxOffice2019
Dan: “No big Disney live-action adaptations on the horizon”
Mulan: “Am I a joke to you?”
Not an adaptation. This looks like an actual real plot-movie! (fingers are so crossed)
Yeah, it's actually based more on the original story. I'm looking forward to it
Yes.. It is
They did say its based more on the actual Ballad of Mulan. Fingers crossed its more original
this is going to make mega bucks as there will be much more interest in china where there's normally a drop off
“Charting? After all this time?”
Dan: “Always...”
Perhaps we chart too soon
Don't tell anyone.
that hits different now
Dan: I went a little chart crazy.
Me:Yay!!!
I love the idea of "This Day in New Mutants History". The Meowountdown will be sorely missed, but this still sounds like a lot of fun!

Yessssss! SJU and Charting with Dan is back, the black hole of existence has been filled :)
Also Cats happened so... it's nice to see a friendly face.
Jeanne's Movie Chats Cool channel!
@@ieatgremlins Thank you so much! :)
A butt in 1999 may still be a butt in 2019, but chances are there was a least a little inflation. :P
Agreed, the average butt is worth (weighs) more in 2019.
Also, there are now more butts than there were 20 years ago, so one 1999 butt represented a higher percentage of the potential audience than one 2019 butt did.
Excellent point sir ☝️🧐
Rogue One was not divisive when it came out, at least not at any level like The Last Jedi or The Rise of Skywalker.
gpage This. 👆
Yeah, it was less political but fans were still divided over "Fuck Yeah Fanservice!" vs "Urgh, it's nothing but fanservice"
I hated Rogue one
I personally loved Rouge One! It was unique enough to stand on it‘s own and had just the right amount of connection to the main series (not like Solo which really pushed the „explaining everything“
The Rise of Skywalker seems to be pretty well-liked by looking at Rotten Tomatoes ratings. It's the critics the one who complained. But the majority of the people liked it
I'm glad Knives Out has been doing well. I've been talking it up to all my movie watching friends, but I think it will really have a big burst in popularity when it eventually makes its way to streaming.
Brent Russell probably one of my favorite movies of the year
Saw it the first week. Just saw again Thursday with the director commentary on my phone which was nice! Some friends wanted to go see it for their first viewing and I joined. Sold out for 7pm on the 2nd
Yeah I've been recommending it to basically everyone who would listen 😄
Literally Nobody:
Dan’s Brain: CAT-niss Everdeen
Dan’s Brain: CAT-niss Everdeen
Jennifer Lawrence (somewhere): *shudders*
I immediately went there.
New Mutants Countdown...?
I literally yelled: "I knew it!" When you guys announced this. 😂😂😂
"a scary wet girl" - L.Harris 2020
LOL but that was the problem. The Ring has the scary wet girl. The Grudge is supposed to have the scary pale bloody girl. They mixed up the ghosts. I think people were disappointed that there was no Kayako in this new movie.
I wonder if the New Mutant cast will do press for this movie. "What was the experience like filming this?" "I literally cannot remember, I was like 12, now I'm 25."
Charting is without a doubt, my favorite show on fandom.
We need “This Day In New Mutants History”
*Box-office news about The Rise of Skywalker*
"Well, that went slightly better than the worst it could've gone, so...hooray?"
It's _literally_ going to make well over $1B worldwide, bud. Shut your mouth.
@@DarinMichaelGrant you are right. Disney knows they can polish a turd and still make a billion dollars. They have found the secret formula for success.
For a Star Wars finale it should not be doing Rouge One numbers. It should be hitting Avengers 1 numbers at least. $1B for Star Wars is disappointing.
@@SeriousStriker It isn't really a Star Wars finale. Rian aborted the trilogy and tried to restart it with TLJ, which has really hurt the property. This is essentially either part two of Rian's or part two if JJ's. If it is to be a finale then there needed to be another movie of either of theirs sequences. Rian really screwed the pooch with his timing and insistence on using his story in the middle of an already started trilogy. He should have waited until Episode X to do his thing.
You made my day.
Been waiting for this so patiently. Thank you for these every week or so.
David Carfagno finally
Charts! Charts! Charts!
27:08 Jumanji is Sony, not Universal.
Finally managed to see Knives Out, and I loved it. While I'll agree that Daniel Craig (thanks for the correct pronunciation again, Dan) was very good, I would like to also praise the superb acting from Ana De Armas, because her character carries a lot of the movie. Loved the Agatha Christie 'Poirot' mention by Lon, as I too felt that this film owes a lot to her storytelling style.
It totally does. Her novel, Crooked House has a lot of similarity to Knives Out.
@@beccadotelpy They do say that imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. At least it means that there are more 'Murder Mystery' style film's, which is something I do enjoy.
Hooray for 2020 charts ❤
CHARTING WITH DAN 2020! A new decade of figuring out legs! So excited :)
“My pen just fell apart” me watching The Grudge.
2020 will be the year of Lon Harris!
Dan's excitement for his first pie chart of the show is kind of endearing, very nerdy AND endearing.
My friends and I went to see Cats tonight, complete with hand-made cat ears. My cat name tonight is from Dan's description of "spectacular disaster." The name: Ketamine Spectaster.
I’ve missed you, guys. Thanks for all the awesome work you put on this. This channel consistently offers the most comprehensive, smart and fun entertainment news/content (sorry, Dan) on UA-cam. Happy 2020!

- "By a director named Checco Zalone"
- "(insert stereotypical Italian noise)"
I want a full clip of Lon talking about "Cats", let that be half hour long and you can add Danielle.
I hope after New Mutants comes out (?) you start a CountDUNE...
"A butt in 1999 is a butt in 2019." - Dan Murrell
justinisasquare hasn’t there been an inflation in population though? More people to have butts now.
Welcome back charting, I missed you.
I legit forgot about Box Office recap lol. Glad it's back!
It’s been years and years listening to Dan, Lon and crew. Thank you & keep it up guys
I think the performance of the recent "Star Wars" movies just shows that the property is no longer the biggest brand in the world, let alone the biggest brand Disney owns. (That would be the MCU.)
Ronnie Barzel I got in an hour long argument with someone over this. They would not admit that Marvel was more popular, despite having the highest grossing movie. After TROS, I hope that they finally understand where I was coming from.
I agree with both of you. Marvel is currently doing way better than Star Wars and I think they have a good plan going forward.
Pokemon and Hello Kitty are the biggest worldwide brands. Each is worth more than all of Disney so they can't even hope to touch those IPs.
@@budthecyborg4575 GTA is the biggest brand. People kind of dismiss How GTA 5 is the most profitable entertaining product ever, for a budget of Just a average blockbuster (around 250 mi), and generated more than 6 bi of profit.
Weird to me that a $1 billion movie can be proof of waning interest. What a world the future is.
It isn’t it is just internet and tweeter talk . All it will take is one big movie and it will be Star Wars is back like the talk was after the force awakens.
I think this is Disney reading too much into the Star Wars Fandom bubble and Solo's box office.
Most people I know was excited for the movie and loved it.
Everything's relative. Star Wars isn't an indie movie given a small budget and expected to make peanuts. It's built as a franchise blockbuster and given the budget to do it.
@The Kid from Ironman 3 2 billion is still a barely attainable goal. There are only 5 movies who have made 2 billion. It is rare.
The Rise of Skywalker is easily making over 1 billion dollars.
IMO, Disney is leaving money on the table by not continuing the Skywalker saga and should have milked the cow until it was dry.
Their only "failure" was Solo, and that was the only movie not directly related to the Skywalker story.
@@UNFITTED1 movies stay in theatres for as long as they are making money (and the contract with the studio requires), and are more often about 30 days. Star Wars is going to be out longer than that, to be sure, but the majority of the money is earned in the first few weeks, so it's not going to hit $2B, for example.
Yes, ROS is a financially successful film, the issue is that it's not as successful as it seems like it should be, which means everyone's trying to figure out why: is it poor critical reviews, negative audience reaction to TLJ or Solo carrying over, oversaturation, marketing, etc.
Saying it's doing well is correct, but missing the point: it's not doing as well as it "should", ie. as predicted.
Also, no need for name calling.
I really like you showing some alternate movie posters on your international charts.
The only thing my Christmas was missing: Charting with Dan
“ Not in this Dojo Disney”
Welcome Back Dan and Lon!! So great having Charting With Dan to start out the New Year and for many years to come. Cats got so bad I had to leave and walk into Frozen 2 just to cleanse my eyes and ears.
You finally said Daniel Craig and not Daniel Creg, thank you. I'm so proud.
"Cats" is the kind of movie that make me wish I was actually a stoner or made use of 'shrooms.....it has to be something to behold if high
Trust me. It doesn't help.
If charting with Dan always goes away at the end of the year, I'm going to stop looking forward to Christmas
KNIVES OUT succeeded in China because of Chris Evans & Daniel Craig
I mean it is a good movie too so that’s there
Great sweaters are the universal language.
Not entirely. The translated title turns people off because it sounds like a PC propaganda movie. A lot of Chinese reviewers recommended the movie on social media and even organized group viewings with Q&A after the screenings. It got good words-of-mouth in China, too.
Luis Martinez It’s quite clear what she’s stating. I think you’re just an idiot.
RACIST!
Dan announcing his pie chart=hot.
Yaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay! It's back!
Thank you for the Original Films charts, Dan. I wanted to know about that since the big franchises end up just dominating the charts by the end of the year so that was a pleasant surprise.
Finally it feels like it's been forever!
Honestly, North American audience needs to understand, "Animation" is a FORMAT, not a genre. The prejudice and general disrespect for the animated format is mind-boggling.
Someone's triggered
As long as the audience doesn't then it will be a genre, and that is what the studios will lean into. The legacy of Loony Tunes and Disney has permanently genrefied animation.
Well...it is both....it is a format, but there are also specific tropes which are connected with the format. But I understand what you are getting at. There is a huge difference between the typical Disney movie and something like Perfect Blue, which might be animated, but is more a psychothriller than anything else.
I understand how we get to this state today. I'm just disappointed. There are many stories that can be told in an animation format, but because of these deeply held "genre-conventions", American/Hollywood animation may never reach the same kind of creativity peak that Japanese Anime has.
And that is a shame, because I do also believe that there are stories that only American, and not the Japaneses, would tell.
I just want another South Park movie, but maybe a bit more dramatic oriented...
Watched Jumanji rather than Star Wars at the cinema this weekend - definitely glad I did, it was a ton of fun.
WOO! ‘Charting with Dan is back!
Here’s to another great year (and hopefully) decade of ‘Charting with Dan’
With that being said:
On this week’s episode of Charting with Dan:
Was ‘Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker’ able to break *RISE* against the competition?
Is ‘Frozen II’ finally *MELTING* off the charts?
Is ‘Jumanji: The Next Level’ still *RAMPAGING* its way in the charts?
Was ‘Cats’ just a giant *HAIRBALL* this holiday season?
Hi, I’m Dan Murrell and I’m Lon Harris.
and welcome to the first episode of ‘Charting with Dan’ in 2020 on Fandom Entertainment!
I'm so glad Charting with Dan is back!!! ❤
I do wish when you miss a week or two you look at the week to week charts when you get back. I was also interested in the % drop for Skywalker week to week.
He might have under normal circumstances but everything is so screwy over the holidays the results would be meaningless. Even when both films you're comparing are released on the same date in different years the fact that Christmas day is on a different day of the week would significantly affect the results. It's sad, I like to see the % drop offs too but understandable.
@@pigmiwarriorentertainment274 Nope. I've been watching for three years and he doesn't really go back over what happened over the holidays, Christmas or Thanksgiving.
Yay charting! Also, happy belated birthday Dan!
This movie likely hitting $1.1-1.2billion and still being labelled a box office disappointment is all the proof you need that people's expectations for this franchise are absolutely ridiculous.
Soooooo good to have this programming back. Thank you, I believe Uncut Gems had A24’s highest opening weekend to date! Fun tidbit (potentially)
The world box office w/o us is a great idea, welcome back!
"Scary wet girl" hehe...
Countdown to New Mutants? I'm Dan... Murell?
I was at Wendy's today right before closing and the staff was blasting Memories from Cats. I died laughing.
Welcome back, Charting! You've been missed
I kinda disagree
I don't think audiences grew out/got tired of of the SW movies, all the pieces were there after TLJ to create this great final chapter that could have been a hit, but they took a left turn in rewrites and ended up with a meh movies that disrupts the cohesive narrative of the trilogy
respectfully
maybe that's what you guys were saying
Arceus Lord of Creation they really didn’t get into it (to prevent negative reactions, probably), so their thoughts could go either way
"all the pieces were there after TLJ"
What are you talking about? TLJ basically wrapped up all the setups of TFA leaving no where to go except doing another Return of the Jedi. The entire movie either threw out plot ideas, killed them off, or simply ignored them. This is why RoS was just a disjointed mess. New ideas had to be built from the ground up to make a movie. Instead of Snoke you had to bring back Palps. Nothing was done with Finn and there was too much to do in this last film to really build his character up. Ditto with Po.
Honestly I would have love to have seen what Johnson would have done with a 3rd film as really the only focus you could have done was on the First Order, but as a wrap-up to the trilogy you need a single big bad guy as the point person to defeat. It could have been Ben, it should have been both or Rey. Johnson blew a cannonball sized hole through the setup that JJ did in TFA that I really have a hard time seeing anything that wouldn't be disjointed. The best I've seen is somewhat of a combination of the Fanscription idea.
ua-cam.com/video/dtPgS1l3Rxo/v-deo.html
oh man, I was so psyched when I saw this in my notifications!
So we should expect The Grudge to advertise itself this week as the highest grossing film of 2020.
Awesome! Thanks! 🙏
1) So, so glad y’all took the time off, but, boy, am I happy to have my Charting back!
2) I’m of that rare, special breed who actually thoroughly enjoyed Cats. I got a gift card, rolled the dice and saw it opening day before the fixes. As a long music video with surreal imagery, it’s fun if you like that sort of thing. Next time I imagine I’ll watch with a glass of moscato on hand, however. Not gonna lie.
3) Star Wars will be fine. They just need to explore other stuff. We can discover what Rey’s legacy is in 15 years when the kids growing up with her have matured and desire a follow up. I really enjoyed TROS, but that was largely due to some incredibly charming acting.
All the best in 2020!
Countdown to Dune : 347 days
I can't believe people are still saying that Star Wars don´t have the same potientiel as the Marvel-movies. The reason Rise of Skywalker isn´t doing better, is a direct consequence of Disney not having a plan for the trilogi, and very bad PR. Sure Endgame was the end to an over 20 movie series, but Star Wars has been a strong brand for more than 40 years.
Sure , if Disney is going to make a trilogy without any planning, people will not care. That doesn´t mean a trilogy woudnt work. How do you think Endgame would have done, without all the build up? Also the Marvel part of Disney has been doing a great job talking to its fans. Ryan Johnnson & Co, has done nothing but belittle fans. Look at The Last Jedi. I personly didn´t like it, but that´s not the point. The movie derailed the new trilogy, and ignored all the things that has been build op through an eight movie series. Of cause people dont care, when you tell them nothing matters any more.
Rogue One actually came out before Carrie Fisher passed. Same month as her passing but it had already had its opening, made its big splash at the box office, stirred up the fans, etc...
Not saying Fisher’s passing didn’t impact the film but I don’t think it affected it that much. The film that benefitted from the mourning of fans was Last Jedi.
That filmed came out after her passing and she was in the film.
Just my 2-cents. Great job as always.
Weird to see Checco (it's pronounced with a hard C/K btw) Zalone on Charting lol
fostane lool serio
@@elisabettapulcini8243 Non avrei mai pensato di sentire Dan parlare di Checco 😂
When a video about math is better than an actual Star Wars film...
Actually, better than at least 4 Star Wars films (I kinda liked Solo and TLJ, don't @ me)
Thank you for the new Chart (int.) love it!
i missed yall. i wont lie back when you guys changed to fandom entertainment, i was afraid they'd change everything. im so glad they didnt and that its all the same people. i need charting with dan so thank yall. i also appreciate that you keep this show longer, to me it never feels ad long as it says. i wouldnt mind if it did.
xoxo love from Maryland
Thanks for an intelligent discussion on Star Wars... Instead of simply dissing it as other channels are doing, you guys brought the good, the bad and the ugly.
I’ve missed you so much too!! Love it when the charts clear in January it’s so fun!
I love these countdowns and love even more the passion Dan puts into this show.
I've missed this show! Good as always) Cudos for the beautiful title picture and all of the graphics
Happy New Year and Happy belated birthday Dan! We all missed charting with you over the holidays 🥺
Omg. I am in love with Lon’s shirt. It is amazing!
Great to have yas back 🙂... I went a little chart crazy... yes Dan let's begin 😂
Im very happy for Knives Out's success!
Welcome back guys....good luck for this year...
I love the new countdown idea! Really enjoyed the whole episode too of course! Happy New Year Fandom team!
Both Spiderman and Jumanji are Sony films
Tried to go to knives out on Friday but it was sold out. It's still going strong.
The Chinese posters for Rise of Skywalker, Frozen 2 and Jumanji are all better than the US versions
@30:25 Do films actually have different posters in different countries ?
I feel stupid not knowing this.
Yeah sometimes entirely diffrent titles too Fird vs Ferrai was called Le Mans 66 in countries more familar with the European racing circuit.
So happy Charting is back, looking forward to a great year. Happy new year everybody, let's make 2020 a great one!
Here (Germany) my local theater just has one showing of one movie in English per week, the rest are all dubbed into German. Last weekend it was Knives Out, and my husband and I went to see it. We go to the movies at least once a week, but we hadn't seen any trailers and weren't really sure what it was about. The theater was PACKED. Not sure what kind of marketing they have been doing for this movie, but it's obviously working.
Don’t forget that among people aged 5 to 8, Frozen 2 is the most anticipated film of a lifetime
Great to have you back Dan and Lon!
Can we perhaps get a compilation episode from all the meouwdowns? It would be nice to see them all back to back.
Missed all the charts while y’all were off!!
Happy first charting dan here’s to another good year!!
Always enjoying watching every week;)
OMG! I’m so excited for New Mutants countdown.
Missed charting with Dan. So happy its back
Happy new year Dan and Lon!!!
Yay!!! New countdown!!!
Man, I missed you guys! I can't believe how quickly it goes by when I'm watching it
Charting is one of my favorite youtube shows. Period.
if Lion king is live action then so was final fantasy spirits within
William Holich if Lion King is live action then so is toy story. It is literally an animated movie, people calling it anything else are just wrong.
Not quite.... what Disney wants to say is that one scene was not CGI based...Spirits Within and Advent Children were 100% CGI... But I agree with the premise...
McNaire then the LEGO movie is a live action movie.
Lion king is neither live action or animation
I love the correction of Daniel Craig pronunciation :D Good work.
(Now work on Ray Winstone, lol)
Doesn't China shy away from magic-y and religious type stuff plus SW is a tale of fighting against an oppressive empire...
It never got the original trilogy do it had no love of Star Wars built in like the rest of the world . Back then foreign films weren’t allowed in China
New mutants countdown im so down for this i love it
