- Metallics are powerful, and with that power comes great responsibility....to not look like an utter disaster! Although they can be considered a neutral, metallic dresses can easily go wrong and today's video is counting down the TOP TEN WORST Metallic Dresses. But don't worry, I won't leave you on a sour note, we're also counting down the TOP FIVE BEST Metallic Dresses too!
As I'm sure you recall, both Catherine the Princess of Wales & The Meg have worn metallic dresses. You may be surprised at where they each land on these lists. Are they Catastrophic??
We're covering metallic pitfalls, shiny fails and even how to do it right.
Today's video features some of the hardest to wear dresses due to their tendency to overpower a look, and really show every flaw, seam and wrinkle. I have a shiny headband on and it was separating a section off to the side and I didn't notice 😑 It drove me crazy while editing I almost tossed the video out! So annoying, I wish I would've fixed it!

Catherine's gold dress is one of the most beautiful dresses I've ever seen. I was blown away when I saw her in this dress. I'm sure a large part of the dress being so beautiful is that it's Catherine wearing it. For me, it was perfection, and I was so happy for her on this occasion.

I don’t even like gold, but Catherine’s dress was spectacular- probably my fave dress of hers other than her wedding dress. It was a bold choice, perfect for the occasion, very flattering, and impeccably tailored. Her styling was also perfect! She looked like a goddess.

I agree, you look great. But if you are unhappy with your look-we used to use a color filter in the theater called”bastard amber “ that made everyone’s skin tone look great. I do not know what it would do close up but it might work on cutting the shine you see. It’s really just softening the harsh light.

I actually like the 80s triangle gold dress 😂. I think she looks like a goddess especially from behind. MM’s gold dress reminds me of the insulation packaging material for cold or hot food.
I thought it worked well as a vintage piece inspired by even older eras. As beautiful as Amber Valletta is, I think it long dark hair worn up and high would’ve created a nice lifted visual triangle with the opera gloves which would’ve been an interesting counter to the shoulder and v-neck triangles.
Opera gloves don’t necessarily trip my trigger, but this time they helped “put on the brakes” with all that gold. I like the symmetry for that as well.

I like the top portion of the gold dress, but the bottom looks like the bottom of Marilyn Monroe’s gold dress, so it looks mismatched to me. The way she had her hair was unflattering & washed her out. I think if the bottom was a pair of well cut, not too wide legged pants ( to keep it a bit more modern) would look better .
This dress veers from couture into costume, but I don't hate it! 😊

Rachel would have worn the Packham dress to any event at which someone else, particularly Henry, *should* have been the focus or to any event at which business or casual attire was appropriate, e.g., Invictus Games. Project Runway did an unconventional materials challenge once where a designer wove seatbelts into a fabric. Meg's gold basket weave dress has always kinda reminded me of that.
This was fun. I didn’t realize there were that many bad metallic dresses out there. I had a thought when looking at Meghan in her Hertz dress: how about analyzing Doria’s fashion sense in comparison to her daughter’s? I keep thinking Meghan grew up without feminine input for the most part and she’s never overcome it.

I have wondered if MM's Carolina Herrera red disaster of a dress was an attempt to get a reaction similar to the one Catherine received. The timing was a little suspect. Both were dramatic in their own way, but only one of them worked, and it wasn't MM's. I didn't like her Hertz dress. It reminded me of bubble wrap.

Ok, markle would wear this to the daytime dedication of a war memorial and maneuver herself to stand in front of the memorial during the entire ceremony. As to the dresses, I see the winners were toned down compared to most of the yucky mirror, shining armor fabrics. I liked all your choices, but especially Catherine. The "bad sparkle" list is really painful & shocking! I can't believe they don't have professional stylists that understand how the garments would photograph & how to manage under garments 🤯
Most of those photos were at events where celebrity attendance was being photographed rather than specifically photographing reflective fabrics. On top of that, almost every dress shown would’ve required different lighting.

Personally, I'm not a fan of metallic/shiny as a whole outfit. I don’t mind flashes of shiny or small features of sparkle (if that makes sense) ❤😊🇦🇺. Having said that I think Princess Catherine looks magnificent and her dress is appropriate for the occasion.
Three of the most beautiful metallic dresses worn by three of the most beautiful women in the world. Lupita, Angelina, and Catherine wore beautiful gowns, still they were the most beautiful part of the outfit.
I've never seen a dress as beautiful as Catherine's gold dress, apart from maybe the white Greek style one.

Huge shoulder pads, V shape silhouette, and brassy loud was the ‘80’s. You could buy shoulder pads w/Velcro strips to add to tops without sewn in pads. Or to… double them up. Yes, that happened. 😅

Either overdresses for the occasion or underdresses 😮 she’s has no style and the clothes wear her not the other way around. She has an awkward figure with no waist. Sad but true. I cannot remember a single time that Lupita was not perfect in what she was wearing. If just the black fabric was not at the shoulder here, the minor problem would be resolved. She is just an extraordinary beauty. Part of the secret to her fashion wins is that she keeps it simple so that your eye encompasses her and what she is wearing all at once.
Lupita is another woman that could make a potato sack look like high fashion.

Hey Beebs, I think you missed one. Giselle Bundchen at the opening ceremonies of the 2016 Rio Olympics. She did a catwalk the length on the stadium in a rose gold metallic number that is about the only dress that really gives Catherines Bond dress a run for its money. Those two ladies are absolutely stunning. I would have loved to have been a fly on the wall to see William's reaction the first time he saw his wife in that dress.

At 61, I lived through the crazy disco era, & into the 80's experiencing the nightmare of shiny spandex & the dreaded exaggerated shoulder pads (shudder) 😱 As a young professional (sales for a while), it was a true challenge to find blazers, suits or even dresses without those ridiculous pads! I immediately cut them out as a matter of course. The shiny dresses or tops I did own were light & flowy, never stiff or heavy. I agree with you on these reviews, there were some truly hideous didasters!.
When done right, It can be dazzling & dramatic. However the perfection of the cut, fabric,

Yes! Snipping those shoulder pads out of blazers, blouses, dresses….
I'm 54, and high school was dominated by these pads and chunky belts. What was bad was when you had a shirt with big shoulder pads, then on top a jacket with same - we looked like football players. I used to buy bigger ones and put in my t-shirts, what were we thinking!
I used to cut out the shoulder pads too. They were ridiculous.

Here's the thing... Just because you can do it doesn't mean you should. A big fashion rule for me.
Catherine is so beautiful especially in that dress! Meg probably would have worn it to a PTA meeting. Assuming she would even bother going to one....
One problem with these dresses is that they ofteb look like two dresses mashed together. This happened mixing half and half with metallic and feathers. Katie Perry matched her hair to the feathers which didn't work.
Kanye had final control of everything that Kim wore and I agree with you that he did not help with her look. When I first saw Jessica's dress it looked like camouflage. The 80s retro dress shows that fashion of that time needed major help. The shoulder pads could take an eye out.
Meghan's dress needed the straps. I don't like how the center slit looked. Maybe because the fabric was rather stiff. The silhouette worked for her but it was not appropriate for the function.
The Gucci gown showed all the problems the other dresses had all at once. There were several dresses mashed together with Victorian at neck and shoulders, cocktail waitress apron, and Grecian draping at the ground. Poor Dakota's hair was totally unsuitable.
I did not know that Jenny Packham designed a special line to celebrate the 60th anniversary of James Bond. Princess Catherine looked amazing in this gown and she stole the first place in your list. This shows what a metallic dress can look like.

Catherines gold dress was meant to be worn by a taller woman. She’s flawless. Meghan needs to get a clue.

Especially if you consider the fact that our female ancestors were about the same height as their male counterparts. Also, small women often look more feminine with better proportions (narrower shoulders and wider hips)

Just saw Karen Pittman wear Meghan’s gold dress on THE MORNING SHOW TV Series, season 3. And WOW! Pittman wears the dress how it should be worn! Look at how M crushes the waste! Agh!!
Beebs, if you want 80s shoulder pads, look up Linda Evans and Joan Collins in Dynasty 😀. Part of the gold dress, specifically the skirt, reminded me of a gold dress Marilyn Monroe wore in Gentlemen Prefer Blonds . Fitted her figure perfectly
If you look at the backdrop on the stage at that event MM wore the gold oven mitt dress to…it matches her dress!!! It’s sooo weird but obviously she knew and did that on purpose! She did same thing at the NY mental health thing where she decided to match the chairs!
I liked Jessica Biel's "distressed" dress okay, but I almost feel like it needed a black necklace and accessories to set it off. Most of these all I can hear is Michael Kors yelling, "Short. Shiny. Tacky. Cheap. Oh God, they nailed *all* of it!!" Of course *no one* will top Princess Catherine's gold dress moment! ❤
The gown was fine, but I did not like whatever happened at her throat. It reminded me a bit of the legend of Daphne.

Meg's #3 gold dress fabric reminded me of travelling and having to stop at some creepy Psycho Bates Motel place way off the main road. Like you stole the bedspread and sewed it together to make this mess. The quilting scares me.
A few elements that jump out at me that seem to make metallic outfits look tacky: ruching, stiff fabric, stretchy and figure-hugging, multiple embellishments competing for attention.
The outfits that make the good list drape very well. They have a liquid-like quality about them and a fit-and-flare motif. They are also easy on embellishments, as they are generally minimalistic if not for the shine of the metallic fabric.
I’m a photographer, and I don’t mind a bit of dew. However, if it bothers you, you can bring you light source closer (it will make it brighter so you’ll need to change your camera settings) and it will make your light softer. The second thing is to add some diffusion. Depending on the brightness of your light you can throw a thin sheet or pillow case over it (I’m assuming it’s LED) or they sell diffusion panels and soft boxes :)

I wanted to mention that I was in my 20s in the 1980s and I am tall with extremely narrow shoulders and shoulder pads actually did me a favor during that time. They balanced out with my hips and made my hourglass figure look as it should. I am in my 60s now and struggle with my shoulder issue to this day - straps are always falling down; bras, bathing suits, spaghetti straps, you name it. When I was a child my mom used to tie my bathing suit straps together in the back with a shoe string in order to keep my suits on.

I had the opposite problem with shoulder pads - I have naturally broad shoulders, and combined with a relatively flat chest, let's say shoulder pads were not a good look. My very 80's solution was to unpick the shoulder pads, which were often covered in the same material as the top / blouse, and make a scrunchy with the fabric. Always had a scrunchy to match every outfit!
I have narrow sloping shoulders so they did me a favor too. I would wear small shoulder pads today if I dressed up. I am 76 and dress casually now but they would still help with a shoulder bag.

Being a little full figured I would never wear metallic clothes. I think you need a perfect figure to look good in them. Great video!

Terrific video, your analysis of each of these dresses is considered and well thought out. And, BTW, your face isn’t shiny - it has a lovely youthful and healthy glow, a look that never comes out of a bottle or tube.
