I have seen these tents mostly on Jeeps. I am really glade to see that you have a pick up. I am seriously considering this as an alternative to camping on the ground. So i can store most of my camping gear in the bed. It looks great. Thx for sharing!

Having your tent on the drivers side is very handy for when you camp in tight spaces. You can park close to a wall/fence or hedge on a camping spot. And still get out of the car easy. Many rooftop tents (majority?) open to the left side of the cars. But these are mainly designed in RHD countries like Australia, South Africa, UK and many Asian countries like Japan, India and Thailand. And I see ours is made in USA. Good information on usage and details like mold dew etc.

Hello! Great setup, I was having issues with the feet discomfort on the ladder and I found that adding pieces of pool noodles to the steps help a lot!! Give it a try 😃

Reminds me of my smittybuilt tent. I have the same truck as you, and i also never use the window on the cab side for the same reason as you. But i wanted my tent to ride level with the top of the cab for less wind drag.

GREAT VIDEO!! Tacoma and RTT, love mine!! I have a lower rack as well, and use 1 pole on the cab side and use the window for nighttime ventilation. I'm over 200lbs and love the mattress!! Thanks Jillian!! (Yup, had mine shift as well)

Jillian. Also check your Velcro and material around your hing. If it does not seal or it is torn, great place for the bugs to get into the tent.

I also open my tent driver side. But I mainly decided that because of taco lean. It helps keep the head higher than the feet.

Since many who view this video are not familiar at all with roof top tents, why not do a video of actually unpacking or repacking one on a vehicle? They look to be nice, but it would be even nicer to see how they are raised for use or taken down and what that profile looks like on a pickup when stored away. Nice video and very informative.

Have you tried/is it possible to cut up a pool noodle? If you have to take off each time you fold your tent you could us a Velcro strap to hold the noodle on the step.

New subscriber. Your channel is very informative. I'm recently interested in overlanding. How may miles do you have the truck? At what point do you think you would sell it? I assume you would strip it and I guess make the upgrades fit the next truck?

Is there a window at the top like a sun roof? do you have to take the rain fly off to see the sky or is it inbuilt?
And Can you attach the step ladder on the other side if you choose to?

  • @heatherwenthiking

Nice setup, similar to my setup on my Toyota Hilux here in Australia. I wear my thongs (flip flops) up the ladder and then kick them off to the ground or use the boot holder bags that hang off the sail tracks as you have. I don’t think there are any roof top tent ladders of any brand that don’t hurt feet!

Well. The roof top tent looks good. But to me an old camper.
My tent is staked to the ground in all four seasons. A roof top tent is car camping. Plus to me that's not real camping
But I guess it's what you like.

    • @JillianRebekahMountainYot
      @JillianRebekahMountainYot  4 роки тому

haha...that might be true. But I don't want a "cap" on my truck ;). Create the truck that you want and you won't feel self conscious when you come across something different :)

    • @UrbanArmed

Not doable with most of these midsize trucks with only a 5 foot bed though.

@@JillianRebekahMountainYot I camp in the Rockies in Colorado and Wyoming where my cap protects me better from the elements, such as severe storms, and from the wildlife that can't tear up my cap with their claws. A truck cap gives the truck more utility and practicality and makes me feel more safe period. I am warmer on those cold nights and I have soundproofed it somewhat with denser insulation. For over 2K, you can get a decent used or new cap and does come off with a bit of work .
