    The pettiness of the inquisition resembles that of the WH40k aristocracy in my eyes. How could the inquisition remain not corrupted for 10,000 years, while the aristocracy can use either assassins or beyond huge bribes to get their way? Realistically some of the Exterminatus would be the result of internal power struggles and had little to do with combating xenos or chaos. Not all inquisitors might be that bad, but by their own standards, they should all be purged? Just to be sure?

    • @grimgoreironhide9985
      @grimgoreironhide9985 2 роки тому +11

      Never thought about Exterminatus from that angle. Reminds me of how Christian Missionaries and the Catholic Inquisition would falsely accuse or help spiteful people falsely accuse innocent people for crimes they did not commit. This was done to basically steal and strip properties and other assets.

      This point was what I was looking to make. Like the Nobility, the Inquisition is convinced that even disagreeing with it or not bowing and scraping enough is cause for death. Like the Nobility, not all Inquisitors are like this but their monolithic reputation is often maintained by agreeing in public and killing each other in private. This very attitude they are convinced is necessary so they will be obeyed when it is necessary is what allows the rot inside to grow. Like the Nobility, they need the fire to burn the rot away from time to time. What happens when a Primarch and Lord Commander of the Imperium tells an Inquisitor off...of executes them?

      Main problem with Inquistion is, than no one have any control over them, and only fellow Inquisitor can stay in way of another. Make no mistake, while there are inquisitors that abuse or overuse their power the threats the inquisition itself is set up to fight are very real for the imperium and very dangerous. The problem I see is a lack of oversight, standards or failsafes. Sure they have whole inquisitorial orders set up to try and fight this issue, but then comes the arguments of "on who's authority?" Having extensively overplayed the Inquisition-revolved RPG Dark Heresy, I'd just like to state that the Inquisition isn't your standard Imperium mini-faction, so even declaring a war against them wouldn't be that straightforward.
    The Inquisition isn't an organised force like the Ministorum or Astartes, they're an occupation - Essentially freelance agents given the ultimate authority, more akin to Rogue Traders. The people keeping them in line are, in fact, other Inquisitors, who are constantly searching for signs of heresy within their rivals. The Inquisition are essentially the white blood cells of the Imperium's body - They're the ones that thwart genestealer/chaos/heretek cults before they become big enough to warrant a full-blown war, and more importantly, before they can spread corruption into the rest of the populace, an Exterminatus being a relatively rare event that only the most extremist Inquisitors will initiate.
    Disbanding the Inquisition would result in the Imperium unraveling entirely as a thousand uprisings pop up on every previously-secure planet, because without the Inquisition, this sort of thing could only be managed by each planet's assigned PDF or Arbites, which obviously wouldn't go great - And that was before the Great Rift happened. Like it or loathe it, the Horus Heresy probably wouldn't have happened at all if the Inquisition had been there to confiscate Fulgrim's sword or keep an eye on Lorgar.
    Given context, the Celestial Lions are, at best, dealing with a very small group of Inquisitors - Capable Inquisitors, perhaps, but the tiniest minority regardless. Ironically, if the Celestial Lions had sought the aid of other Inquisitorial branches, they might've spared themselves all these problems by counter-investigating to find their nemesis and lay judgement on them.
    As for the results of a hypothetical war, obviously if it was just the Inquisition's forces of Inquisitors & acolyte retinues versus even a few chapters of Adeptus Astartes, the Astartes have it. However, the Inquisition can requisition anyone - Including the Imperial Navy, the Imperial Guard, the Adepta Sororitas, and indeed, the Adeptus Astartes, if they're inclined to listen. A lot of chapters owe debts of loyalty to Inquisitors through acts in the past, so it's not really a 'space marine vs. them' argument, and inevitably it'd turn into another civil war with astartes killing astartes and guardsmen getting caught in the crossfire.

      Agreed that the Inquisition is vital to the continued existence of the Imperium, but like with the Officio Assassinorum, there should be limits on their power.

    I was actually working on a story of my own, I guess you could call it a fan fiction, about a Salamander space marine who would question his faith after being told certain things about the Imperium by an Alpha Legion sorcerer. At the end of the book he would end up killing an Inquisitor after they inadvertently caused a chaos outbreak on an Imperial world, and the book would end with him choosing to remain loyal to his brothers, but setting him up for a civil war between the Astartes and Inquisition which would happen in one of the sequels to this book.
    This is obviously just a short explanation and may sound contrived but there’s a lot more going into it. The way the Inquisition all too often acted and acts towards Space Marine chapters that just rendered the Imperium and humankind a great service, quite often under at great costs for themselfes, reminds me a lot of Andrei A. Schdanow, RCP party secretary of Leningrad, who achieved what was deemed impossible by many and successfully defended Leningrad against the german siege for more than two years and who even kept at least a modicum of arms industries working during all of the siege.
    After that, he was deemed too popular amongst the people by Stalin, denounced, overthrown, pulled in front of a kangaroo court and then at least indirectly killed. (He died as a result of a misdiagnosis which is deemed to be influenced by the party by historians.)
    So you either die as a hero or you live long enough to understand, being a hero is more a sign of severe idiocy and brain damage than of anything else that people love to read into this word, because you _will_ be punished for it. To me, this sounds a lot like a certain Inquisition is actually working for certain ruinous powers and _very_ busy herding people into their arms. I understand why there is a need for an organisation like the Inquisition, but as things are, burning it all to the ground and start completely new sounds like a good idea.

      In a dictatorship, or even a monarchy, competent and popular underlings are a direct danger to the autocrat/monarch. Incompetent generals lining their own pockets are no threat, as they are too busy being corrupt and tend to be of little value to other ambitious people. But a popular general who won a war or battle, they might get ideas as to who should rule instead, or be courted by other ambitious people. Saddam's generals who were successful had a bad habit of getting into helicopter 'crashes'. And I know the Syrian commander of the Tiger Forces, the ones that were actually winning battles in the Syrian civil war, he had Russian body guards, as he was too useful to the Russians to suffer from an unfortunate 'accident' at the hands of Assad.

However, if some level of support or conspiracy were to be found among the administratum or it’s appendants…. Perhaps even the officials at the beck and call of the high lords…. It would be very difficult to disagree with the Astartes, no matter how extreme their counter-actions were. It is an easy battle. Space marine captains/chapter masters whatever who have relationships with inquisitors call them and tell them they need their help and meet me on planet 'x', don't bring too much stuff we need to be stealthy. When the inquisitor arrives, they say that they are acting on behalf of The Captain General or Guilliman and he is the one who actually needs to see them. Inquisition can't be trusted but That one single inquisitor can be. Put him and his retinue on their battle barge as some combination of guest/prisoner and take him to Guilliman. If he is a sketchy inquisitor they put a bolt through his head mid flight but if he is a good guy Guilliman can use him to start a new Inquisition
