I believe his faith in Russ at first may have been due to his canine like traits, by the time of the heresy I believe his faith in him was entirely emotional in nature, a bond of love. The most trusted is the lion, it is not in his nature to betray and his aloofness limits how much his brothers can manipulate him. Russ couldn’t kill Horus because he loved him. You can trust that the lion would not have hesitated.

I agree all but the lion being more loyal although I don’t question the lions loyalty I just question ur opinion that Russ’s love for his brother calls into question his loyalty. There’s evidence the emporer would want redemption for the traitors if he could so Russ wanting the same just means he’s more like his father than the lion not less loyal.

@@faultydiscord8832 I didn't say he was less loyal. I said he couldn't be trusted to go all out against Horus. That's not disloyalty, it's human sentimentality. Both men were unshakably loyal to the emperor. But you can trust the lion to get the job done.

I would tend to agree, I've been Wolves guy since the first time I saw the models in a shop 20 years ago, and as much as I hate to admit it, I do agree that the Lion probably would have been able to deal the killing blow Russ hesitated in making, whether or not the Lion would have been able to make it to having the chance is another conversation >:)
I also agree with FD on that Russ hesitated because he saw a small part of his brother still and like the Emperor didn't want to outright kill someone who could be brought back.

@@Liethen yeah but you see both the emporer and malcador did trust Russ to do this also the spear wasn’t given to kill Horus it was to open his eyes so if Horus could be saved he could be reached russ was the only one who could do this for all horus’s mocking he respected Russ. The emporer didn’t want Horus dead even after angel boy was felled it was only seeing Horus kill some one so mercilessly that stood no chance against him that the emperor finally decided to destroy him.

You make a good point about the Lion. You could make similar comparisons to other Primarchs on having absolute loyalty. Ferris and Dorn come to mind. The reason I think the Emperor choose Russ was that he imparted some genetic traits in him that specifically cultivated traits of loyalty. In other words.. dog genes! lol

We could also gather that the emperor is over 30,000 years old and already has the measure of the type of man Russ is. He’s known men like him and knows they would die before dishonoring themselves by turning traitor.

I'd say it's either The Lion or Corax. They've had quite powerful interactions with Big E. Also I vauhgly remember Big E and Malcador discussing a Primarch who has already been tested and won't fall, I interpreted it as the Lion as he grew up around Chaos and it had no effect on him.

Honestly, I think this lends credibility to the theory that the Primarch’s all have “god souls” in them which were put into bodies. The way the Emperor is behaving, he’s not acting as if he found his “executioner”. He’s acting like someone who found a long-lost friend, someone he knew from the distant past. Maybe the god soul of Leman Russ is a being the Emperor had encountered before and gotten along well with, so when he meets Russ the Emperor is delighted not just because he recognizes which soul is in the body, but because, despite the fact that he took this beings soul and put it into a new body, this being changed very little from what they were like in their previous existence. It’s kind of how you act when you run into old war buddies you haven’t seen in 20 years, and suddenly you’re 19 all over again in Fort Bragg.

    • @rankcolour8780

      There is something to that.
In one of the Heresy stories it describes the area the Emps and Malcs planned the Primarchs. An archway with 20 ancient sigils.
A wolfs head, an angel, a snake and other more esoteric symbols.
These, and the other character design choices for the Primarchs are deeply rooted in myth and theology, like magnus and his Egyptian theme of Ra/Horus and his symbolic eye.
We know how the warp works, with it giving power to echoes of belief and emotion and some concepts are eternally present in human (and some alien) belief and folklore.
It's like the Emperor pulled some of the focus points for those out of the warp and bound them in flesh, not exactly a full god concept like life and death, but minor aspects like the savagery power of the wolf, the insidious nature of the serpent, the power of the eye and knowledge, etc.
If the chaos gods are built around major concepts like change, life, desire etc, then the primarchs are build around minor concepts, but concepts with enough universal symbolism and belief behind them to give them a deep well of warp power to pull from.
Avatars of minor gods or concepts, if you will.

I think that's pretty much it.
Speaking of power, be interesting to see if the rift empowers untainted Primarchs like the Emperor.
Gman (The power of the herd) or (all in together) is a bad case study for this as his powers are less visible although it might account for him being able to deal with the current Imperium.
Others like Russ (savagery of the beast), Khan (speed & aggression) and Vulcan ( iron strength of the forge) whose aspects are more combat based may become more visibly charges...like Corax (bird of prey) did after spending all that time in the warp, closer to his "source".
If GW wanted to they can return loyalist Primarchs with more access to the power of their warp aspect, evening the odds vs their corrupted brothers who are basically at max aspect power but ruined due to how they got there.

I think that Emps trusted his sons to be "themselves". Each was designed to achieve certain functions. All were supposed to be generals, but all were supposed to be different types of general.
Alpharius was supposed to be a spy master. Guilliman was supposed to be a logistical & legal specialist (an empire builder). Sanguinius was supposed to be a figure of inspiration. The Nighthaunter was supposed to be a figure of terror. Russ was supposed to be a champion and executioner.
These specialisms and functions were not equally complex. Alpharius, Horus & Guilliman's specialisms made them more risky prospects as generals.
For example, if only one son turned traitor, it might have taken Emps a year to defeat Russ, a decade to defeat Gulliman and a century to defeat Alpharius.
The nature of each son's loyalty was also different. For Russ, it was primarily a personal loyalty. He swore to Emps and he would keep that oath. For Guilliman, it was also loyalty to the imperium project. Yes, he had a personal loyalty, but it was also an ideological loyalty (the Imperial truth). For Alpharius/Omegon, there was (probably) a small element of personal loyalty, but the imperium was a tool rather than an end. He was willing to sacrifice the Imperium and mankind, to defeat the Warp gods.
The point is that it was easy to trust Russ because (as magnificent as he was), his motivation, his worldview and his functions were all simple and straightforward - relative to some of his brothers.

All his favoured sons never tried to prove anything. They simply existed as themselves. Not to say they didn't want to make him proud but they never needed his constant praise. All the ones that seemed to need his approval or in Angrons case help ended up falling to chaos because they thought they could get what they couldn't from him. More to that point, all of the loyalist primarchs were more human. Russ laughed and joked in mundane human manners as opposed to in competition with a brother. Did he have grudges yes but he was wholly himself already. Guileman found love with an Eldar but never wavered so he was supervised. But he too was always true to himself and not assumed to have failed. The lion again was completely himself. Same with the Khan. So I guess my long drawn out point is that he trusted all of his sons that were their own people that didn't need him to be complete but still followed him because they believed in him and his goal.

Trust is hard to quantity, but let's try.
Russ was the Emperors deterrence, a scary loyal monster, that the Emperor could use as a very public thread. Stay in line or I unleash this attack dog!
Russ was trusted to kill utterly whoever he was ordered to, and to stop when the job was done.
But is that a unique level of trust?
Dorn was trusted with being the master of the Emperors defence, the defender of the Palace and commander of all loyal armies after Horus fell.
Horus was trusted to lead and win the Crusade. Given command over all other Primarchs. Trusted with more power than any other person in the Galaxy.
The Lion was trusted with the weapons of the Dark Age of Technology, trusted to be the silent cold butcher of any enemy. Russ was a public deterrence, the Lion an unspoken, uncompromising eliminator.
Guilleman was trusted to keep and build a massive interstellar powerbase and semi-empire.
These 5 primarchs have each been given special roles and powers beyond the others, and we must as such think them the Emperors most trusted military vassals alongside Valdor.

Now hear me out. So Russ was found on an ice world. They don’t have lots of fruit so Russ always wanted to try a banana. So they come across a tropical world with huge fruit. Russ starts going to town. Even getting everyone on the bridge of the emperor’s ship to eating some fruit. Well dropped a banana peal on the stairs leading up to the command pulpit of the ship. One of the unnamed primarchs come running to show his father a new bolter he made. As everyone turns to see why he is running, he slips on the peal and shoots himself. In the silence after that the emperor calmly walks out of the room. Not looking at anyone. Also as he walks out everyone is hiding the fruit that Russ has been handing out like candy. Even Russ himself had a banana half eaten hanging from his mouth when the accident happened. Since that day food has not been allowed onto the bridge of any imperial ship.
Russ is called the executioner not as a badge of honor but mockingly.

It is becoming more and more apparent to me that perhaps the perception of "Executioner" has been misunderstood. Here me out for a moment. Most if not all have (for a long time if not from the very introduction to we consumers) people have taken the term in the context of the "grimdark". The one who lowers the proverbial axe upon the enemies of mankind. For a moment, alter your definition to a different kind of "Executioner", One who carries out the the wishes/orders of the Emperor. In this context, and bolstered by the Emperor's words of reaction to Horus' inference that Russ may turn, I believe this is a more fitting definition of the title. With the veil of the double entendre masking both definitions, it is my contention that this moniker was intentional and deliberate. Justifying the Emperors faith and resolve in Leman's unwavering fealty to do his fathers bidding to carry out whatever he was tasked to do. Yes, Russ and his sons are all too eager to lower the axe upon those who oppose them...however, Leman Russ with stalwart resolve passed the same on to his sons. This should have been evident to the Eclesiarchy when they questioned it in a moment of paranoid delusion an untrusting passions overflowing. It should never be questioned again by anyone within the Imperium that the Space Wolves will always be loyal...until the Wolftime and into oblivion

If he did (not only would I want to know, why only him and a few others, but), he did not trust him at all, because if someone has the baseline capability to betray me, and he or she does not use any chance, I can trust that person, because it chose the way. If that person does not have the capability at all, it is just performing, as intended. Like, no one would be surprised, that the toy-train did not hit the toy-horse next to the rails, because everyone knew, it can not change its path.
