  • Brian Simmons from The Passion Translation joins me to discuss his alleged role as a NAR apostle - Does he believe in an open canon? Does he believe churches need to be run by apostles and prophets? Does he believe that we have to Christianize the whole world in order for Jesus to return?
    I'm Rod Saunders, founder of Jew and Greek. I’m a musician, web developer, and a student of philosophy and economics. I recently published my first book on Amazon entitled Defending the Faith: Word of Faith Apologetics. It’s a response to the numerous charges against and misrepresentations of the Word of Faith movement and theology. I also have a CD of original music on CD Baby entitled Gates of Pearl. “Jew and Greek” is a good name because the two civilizations that influenced Western civilization the most were those of the Judeo-Christian and Greek worlds. From the Jews we received our values and a monotheistic theology, and from the Greeks we got philosophy which brought us science, sports, the arts, democracy, and economics. As a result I discuss all of the above in this blog and in my videos.

    Hi Rod. Let's see if I understand Brian, correctly. He's not expecting me to make the Passion, a primary Bible or make it a part of my Bible study. That's good to hear.
    I really don't like calling it, a "translation". It's more of a paraphrase Bible that is sometimes worth looking at. I prefer the NASB '95 and NKJV. I'll use an NLT for a dynamic equivalence translation.
    The rest of this video is worth the time spent. Thanks.

      I agree. Although he references primal languages, he often disregards terms that are central to the translation. It is written in good prose as a paraphrase as you noted.

    Thank you once again Rod. I have never read TPT to have an opinion and I haven’t followed Brian a lot but the few clips of him I have listened to have never given me any of the negative vibes his critics shout about

    I realized the "NAR" is term only used by those who are not Charismatic/continuationist. Never heard it mentioned in any charismatic circle. Also ive been under and heard elders/ministers that believed that have apostolic/prophetic grace and they always encouraged and stayed within the Infallible Word of God.

    • @StonyKalango
      @StonyKalango Місяць тому +3

      Yup you are so right. U won’t hear it from charismatics. It’s more of an accusatory or derogatory term.

      @@dianawilliams6700 again even if he did, he’s not some authority that speaks for the Carismatic movement. That’s one man that you were using his words to describe hundreds of millions of people. That is not the right thing to do as a child of God. That’s bearing false witness and not Christlike at all.

      @@ludwigamadeushaydn706 isn’t it interesting how you guys pointed to rare and non-significant sources but argue like it’s the majority of people who subscribe to that doctrine or paint with a broadbrush based on your descriptions. Again that is dishonest and that’s bearing false witness and Christians should not do that. Imagine if I said every single Calvinist is a hyper Calvinist and that’s even a very generous description because there’s a significant group of colvanists who are hyper Calvinists or the southern Baptist are all cultist Baptist group

    There’s a lot of crazy town in charismatic churches making it hard to distinguish between ones we agree with and those we don’t or at least without really looking into each one. Do we accept Apostles running the church? Some do and some don’t. Do we accept any word a prophet gets no matter how crazy? Some may and some may not. Do we believe in gold dust and feathers happening in some churches? Hopefully not. Do we keep listening to prophets who keep getting it wrong over and over in words from God and doctrine? Sadly we ready accept another spirit quite easily given our desire to hear from God. I could go on with these outlandish claims considered normal in many charismatic churches and rejected by others but the very occurrence of these disputes reveals all we need to know. Our modern charismatic church is divided into some quite nutty groups and some quite sound although not given the spotlight like the former ones. It’s up to us individually and for our families to evaluate these things and make decisions on who we fellowship with. We must not become like the believers of Corinth (2 Corinth. 11:4) who put up with such things too easily.

      When you look at church history Travis you will realize there was a lot of crazy happening in the churches the Apostles themselves planted. The only issue is we tend to give history more dignity than it has. My point is-if something is true it WILL have many fakes and faults

      If you are not being led by the spirit, it doesn’t matter how many degrees you have. Case in point: the ministers of The Church of England. And that is just one of the mainstream churches that have given way to cultural demands, there is the Presbyterian Church USA, the Evangelical Lutheran Church of America , the Methodist church, all leaders of these churches have degrees.

      It's nice to hear these things discussed. I watch Justin Peters lambast and lampoon "NAR", "WORD OF FAITH", CHARISMATICS, PENTECOSTALS; and just about everything else that isn't John McAuthur centered sessationist Calvanist.
      Justin would have us to believe that the only people that are credible and worthy to preach God's Word are those who sit in Churches full of theologians and Bible scholars and quietly discuss scripture in the way they deem correct.
      In reality, the great majority of people who get saved do so in country churches with Pastor's who jump, scream, spit and sweat and can't even spell theologian.
      Many of these Men of God don't even know the difference between Calvanism and Armenianism or sessationism and continuationism. The only thing they know about a TULIP is that it grows in the garden, and the 5 Solas are the 5 ladies who rotate singing specials in the Church.
      These preachers get up and preach heaven sweet and hell hot, encourage their members to do their best to do the things that please God, and try their hardest to abstain from doing things that displease God.
      They tell their congregations not to backbite folks and to trust God in everything they do.
      Certainly we need theologians, Bible Scholars, and intellectuals in the Church, but average Joe, greasy fingernail, backwoods preachers are the Lord's pride and joy in my opinion.
      The Word says, Charity edifies, but knowledge puffs up....
      The Word says, God chose the foolish things to confound the wise....
      The Word says, you know nothing as you ought to know it.....
      Certainly we are to study to show ourselves approved..
      Certainly we are to search the scriptures daily....
      Certainly we are to learn and grow;
      But when Justin and his Calvanist partners show their haughtiness by calling charismatics/pentecostals and others heretics, weirdos, and devils.......they probably need to examine themselves.❤❤

    Softball interview that avoids the controversial things Simmons has actually said about how he received and translated the NT.
    This does little to assuage the concerns raised by Simmons own words and work.

      I saw it. So you can ask actual hard questions when you return to this. Ask him what actual texts he used as source material for translating. From what text was he translating? Show videos of him claiming downloads of special revelation and inquire what precisely he means? Ask him about his exact Aramaic sources. Does he maintain the Aramaic was the original language of the NT? Which books of the NT? What exactly does he mean by the “secret” of homonyms? Does he maintain that this is an actual translation even given the critique by Michael Brown that it is not even properly a paraphrase given the lavish addition of words not found in the Greek texts? What role does the bridal motif of interpreting Song of Solomon play in his interpretive translating of the NT?
      His endorsements come from many people that I admire and count as friends but they are not language scholars. Where are those endorsements.
      The work he has done is in many ways lovely and emotionally satisfying but the questions are real.
