  • Mike Winger did a 4.5 hour video a couple of months ago attacking Benny Hinn. In this podcast S.J. Newell and I discuss that video and his rebuttal videos.
I'm Rod Saunders, founder of Jew and Greek. I’m a musician, web developer, and a student of philosophy and economics. I recently published my first book on Amazon entitled Defending the Faith: Word of Faith Apologetics. It’s a response to the numerous charges against and misrepresentations of the Word of Faith movement and theology. I also have a CD of original music on CD Baby entitled Gates of Pearl. “Jew and Greek” is a good name because the two civilizations that influenced Western civilization the most were those of the Judeo-Christian and Greek worlds. From the Jews we received our values and a monotheistic theology, and from the Greeks we got philosophy which brought us science, sports, the arts, democracy, and economics. As a result I discuss all of the above in this blog and in my videos.

    • @Vern_Levine

On the other hand, if we have the Holy Spirit and he can teach us why do we need people to teach us? I think it’s pretty clear, especially from scripture that some are teachers and some are not and it’s the same thing with discernment. Some people do not have that gift.

      Genuine question.
Because the following verse (mirroring Jesus's words in John 14:26 & 16:13) says the opposite...
      1 John 2:27:
"But the anointing which ye have received of him abideth in you, and *ye need not that any man teach you* but as the same anointing teacheth you of all things, and is truth, and is no lie, and even as it hath taught you, ye shall abide in him".

Ephesians 4:11 “It was he who "gave gifts to people"; he appointed some to be apostles, others to be prophets, others to be evangelists, others to be pastors and teachers.
12 He did this to prepare all God's people for the work of Christian service, in order to build up the body of Christ.”
      1 Timothy 2:7 (ESV):
“7 For this I was appointed a preacher and an apostle (I am telling the truth, I am not lying), a teacher of the Gentiles in faith and truth”
1 Corinthians 12:28-31 (ESV): “And God has appointed in the church first apostles, second prophets, third teachers, then miracles, then gifts of healing, helping, administrating, and various kinds of tongues. 29 Are all apostles? Are all prophets? Are all teachers? Do all work miracles? 30 Do all possess gifts of healing? Do all speak with tongues? Do all interpret? 31 But earnestly desire the higher gifts.”
Hebrews 5:12-13 (ESV): “For though by this time you ought to be teachers, you need someone to teach you again the basic principles of the oracles of God. You need milk, not solid food, 13 for everyone”
James 3:1-2 (ESV): “Not many of you should become teachers, my brothers, for you know that we who teach will be judged with greater strictness. 2 For we all stumble in many ways. And if anyone does not stumble in what he says, he is a perfect man, able also to bridle his whole body.”

There's so much to appreciate about this video, but I think what resonated with me the most is SJ's highlighting of our current inability to evaluate ideas without becoming tribal or divided. This issue basically defines most online interactions and even some personal conversations. 💯
I know how we got there, but how we get out is the challenge. I'm not sure what the answer is, but I believe a good start is to encourage thoughtful, logical, and gracious dialogue while remaining conscious of what is most important and being able to love people even while disagreeing. 🧐💛

I will object to SJ Newell's metric of "how many people did one lead to the Lord" as an indicator of holy living. To use an analogy, it's a bit like giving the doctor all the credit for baby creation and formation because he delivered the baby. The process of salvation is lead by the Holy Spirit and there is no greater holiness that should be attributed to the one that contributes to any part of the process of salvation.

Put it into perspective a bit. They also say here in the video that they do see also negative things about Benny Hinn

Great interview. To be fair, Mike Winger has been rather gracious at times to Charismatics even calling Joel Osteen and Bill Johnson Brothers. So, He is not totally against Charistmatics like someone such as Justin Peter's. Examples of people on UA-cam who are Charismatics but also use discernment where needed are people such as Abendego Lufile, Torn Curtain and a few others. Even Dr Brown is Charismatic and has a strong focus on the word and the Spirit. We need both. I think so many of these discernment channels are quick to call someone a heretic without really researching their doctrines, what they believe. They just play a few second clips from a lot of these people without even really giving any context.

Costi is an expert on one thing - what he experienced as part of Benny Hinn's family. Nobody would question what he observed. As for having an axe to grind, Costi has told stories about his family rejecting his wife because she doesn't speak in tongues. Im glad Kenneth Hagin was brought up in this video. Brother Hagin to his credit wrote a book a few years before he passed dealing with extremes and excesses in teaching on money, prosperity, and finances in the charismatic church. He had actually called a private meeting in Tulsa of leaders in the charismatic church before releasing the book. This included Kenneth Copeland, Creflo Dollar, Jesse Duplantis, Mac Hammond, Happy Caldwell, and some othe notables. I think even Jerry Sevelle was there, I cant remember. The one guy who refused to show up was Leroy Thompson whom Ive never been a fan of. At that point the charismatic church had pretty much ballanced itself out in every area except teaching on money and prosperity. That book is worth a read. I think it was also Kenneth Hagins final prophetic warning to church leaders before he went on to be with the Lord. Not too many leaders heeded the warning. Thats what I always appreciated about Kenneth Hagin. One of the most ballanced, biblical leaders in the charismatic church weve ever had in the last 100 years. I think if Benny had been at that meeting if not at the least read that book he would be in a much better place regarding much of the controversy surrounding his ministry. Ill take shots just for saying this but I dont think Benny is a demonic false teacher. Far from it. Off on some unhealthy extremes that he needs to repent of? Definitely. But I know better than most as I know people that know him personally.

People keep bashing prosperity, word of faith and healing preachers. The fact is no aspect of Christianity is bating a 100%, I dare say even 50%. The regular preachers keep acting like their doctrine and all is 100% correct because there is no immediate way to verify that, but let not kid ourselves over the year lots of Christian doctrine has be revise as we get older and wiser.
And what about the prophecies we are still waiting for Jesus to return 2000 years later, there is still lots of sin and failures in the church after so many year of preaching the gospel that supposed to save us all.
I don’t get how people feel so comfortably with personal criticism, as far as I can see no one really know what’s going on this earth. Everyone is working with the light they have does not mean it 100% truth.

I don't see why he doesn't meet Biblical requirements for leadership. If he intentionally deceives people that is very bad. Certain sin are more dangerous than others by reason of their consequences.
If he sincerely repents that is good ,but he may hv lost some respect with many and need or will have to prove himself to re ceive honour and trust from those under him. Sad some have been wounded and grieving. Leadership position is no child's play God wants us to hold leaders up to a higher standard . Unfortunately we fail woefully sometimes.
Local church authority has the responsibility to see that an erring leader is rebuked ,corrected , if possible discipline, and restored but not necessarily in the capacity they may cause further harm if they slide back into error again. Habitual sin is the worst , as worst as fundamental doctrinal error.Permanent removal from Leadership position is the responsibility of the Local churches authority, they should decide on such cases by the Scriptures, the guidance of the Holy Spirit and the case at hand .
For most independent ministries this is most difficult. The man rules and dictates. He is the final authority over ' his ministry'. I can only pray and hope this time around Benny Hin will stay true and steadfast in the truth keeping away from what he said he has repented from

I, too, have always respected Winger for being respectful to Joel Osteen and others for not questioning their salvation and calling him a brother, even while he was critical of his ministry--because Justin Peters would condemn him to hell.
