      Here we find a mistake that is often made about salvation according to basic Christian doctrine. Salvation didn't come by way of JESUS' crucifixion...which was a remittance (sacrifice) paid for our sins past, present & future. Salvation came by way of JESUS' resurrection through which we overcame death with HIM. Without the resurrection, the crucifixion of JESUS would have been the same as with all the other crucifixions carried out by the Romans. An analogy is the difference between a fine & a death sentence: the crucifixion paid the fine & the resurrection is a pardon for the death sentence🤔

      Yes me too. I have a speech that I've said so often to the so called "religious' when they come to mey door tryhing to convince me they have god in their front pocket, that I have nearly word for word about the importance of the Nag Hammadis. oF course, most deny the importance of them claiming them to be the mysterious, illegal "GNOSTICISM" of the evil boogyman devil.
      Well, the original black book of the devil was created to fool the ignorant (which those with the power made sure they kept in ignorance) and trick the stupid. If yhou read the "illegal" books yhou will find that jesis (even in the black devil book it says this) took some of his disciples aside to teach them secret things. Well? What ARE those secret teachings? They are definitelyh NOT in the devil book. So for those who refuse to seek the true meaning of jesix, well, you are going to have a very difficult time in hell. (And frankly, you have NO idea what heaven or hell is, you DON'T own god!)

The Bible is not the Injeel but the Bible may have remnants of truth left over from the Injeel. *Mary must be stoned to death*
      Mary wasn't married, but she got pregnant. According to the Torah law at that time, *adulterers had to be STONED to death.* But Mary escaped the punishment. Why? There is no "adultery issue" in the Canonical Gospels, so *they cannot explain this. While in the Talmud, Jews accused Mary of adultery.
      *Prophet Muhammad through Quran explain this issue.* In the Quran, after the angel Gabriel announced that Maryam/Mary would have a child, Mary went far away. *After giving birth, Maryam returned to the village* carrying baby Isa/Jesus. The people accused her of committing adultery. Mary was just silent and pointed to her child. *Baby Jesus then talked* & denied the accusation. *His mother was not an adulterer.* Jesus' birth without sexual intercourse was a proof of Allah/God's power. Allah gave *miracle to baby Isa to save Mary* from the stoning death penalty.

      For some people the Bible is the word of God and they are fanatical to the point they wont entertain any dispute. I do not accept Bible literally because it has been doctored so many times. You are not allowed to change main text in. Gita or Quoran. If you read Maimonides' , " Guide to the perplexed" , he clearly says Bible uses symbolic language. It has one meaning on the surface and one meaning on the depth. If you change the text the inner meaning is lost. There is an element of arrogance in christianity, which makes people , particularly young adolescents rebellious. They are looking for some logic and reason whatever they read. There are so much illogical and absurd things in Bible that is unacceptable to any intelligent person. No wonder the churches are not full and number of deists, agnostics and atheists are rising. In England churches bought by hindus and moslems to be converted to temples and mosqes. In Scandinavian counties only 15 to 20 percent people attend churches. So if Christianity is survive they have to have a unified honest and humble approach. For me personally Faith is nothing but affirmation of the absurd. Absolutely useless. Milan

    Thank you for the video. Quite thought-provoking. Having watched this video, I feel emboldened to make the conjecture that aside from the theological differences between the Gospel of Thomas versus those of the canonical Gospels, one reason for rejection of the Gospel of Thomas from what evolved into mainstream Christianity is the idea that to know oneself is to know Christ leaves little if any room for mass control. In other words, Catholicism would not have flourished if people were more introspective. Both Catholicism and Eastern Orthodox Christianity were as much about political power, as any government past, present or future. Peter and Paul dictated their way to the masses. From what has been presented in this video, the Gospel of Thomas neither demands such dogmatic devotion, nor encourages others to pursue such blind devotion.

While it might be true that the teaching is necessary to follow it as it’s not the teaching alone that saves mankind but His death as sacrifices. His death is key to His resurrection which is key to our eternal Hope. Otherwise He could just left us with the teachings and skipped His sacrifice by death! The sheer fact that so many people just accept the gnostic texts without anywhere near enough evidence to validate them shows just how many people refuse to accept the true words of God
    We have 4 very reliable and very coherent texts that tell a vivid and clear story of Christ, and in these texts we have Thomas refusing to believe Christ was risen so clearly his faith was challenged
    Then we have these “gnostic” texts without much evidence of their validation and they all often seem to contradict each other in more ways than one.
    I think what we see is so many people wanting to reject the law of God and the harsh reality of salvation (even though the grace of God is immeasurable) and want to cling to this gnostic idea of oneness with the universe and if you connect to nature hard enough you’ll be able to transcend. Now, if you can give me very clear and precise evidence for these texts to be true, than maybe I’d reconsider them, but all seems like deception if you ask me. The devil uses the truth and twists it to make sound all nice and lovely so you’ll fall into his deception. There’s more than enough evidence to follow when it comes to The Bible’s texts.

    I find it so fascinating between this gnostic thought, the Upanishadic Advaita (just one interpretation I know, but it’s the trail of thought put emphasis on in the earliest ones IMO - Brihadaranyaka & Chandogya) and Buddhism which all have a sort of metaphysical pantheistic monism with solipsistic elements almost, all came within a similar timeline in human history. I’ve heard a historian call it the ‘Axial age’, a time in human history where humans became especially ‘self aware’ of internalizing truths and delving more into ‘who am I’ kind of questions coupled with questioning existing ethics and leading to to more egoless principles of non-violence, forgiveness, acceptance, etc. You see this in the fact that in ancient India, the sacrificial Vedic rituals were being completely questioned in the Upanishads (Mundaka) and likewise the figure of Christ & New Testament questioned the older order of Leviticus & Deuteronomy Sacrifices & ethics too, very striking similarities. Some people even bring up if psychedelics had a role to play in this sudden self awareness, hmm but I didn’t think so, it’s a bit grasping. Also love Origen, a literary genius.

      What's difficult to nail down with scholarly accuracy is the degree to which ideas were 'floating around' from cultures we would have thought developed in relative isolation. Asoka sent Buddhist missionaries as far as Greece and Egypt for instance, although we may hardly detect a trace of its presence from what contemporary literature we may possess.

      There's certain degrees of modality between Mahayana/Vajrayana Buddhism and Christian Gnosticism, but it's still more within the closer realms of possibility, if anything Buddhism and Christianity emerges from the rubrics and matrixes of Hinduism and Judaism respectively to posits anti-caste and universalises their systems while expanding upon their constrictions towards other beings

    Awesome job, all your output is high quality but this one on Thomas is already one of my favorites. Thomas was a live document just like the other gospels. Some of it is independent and older, some of it is canonical gospel redaction. But what's important is that the Gospel of Thomas teaches nonduality. These Wisdom teachings cut away the unimportant mythos, they concentrate on what's important - the Truth about the Kingdom.

    I read about the Gospel of Thomas in Elaine Pagel's book on the Gnostic Gospels. Since that time and today, I have come to think that what Thomas (as well as the other texts referred to as Gnostic) tell us is that all the writings about Jesus were built from stories and legends told about him. This reinforces the idea that whomever they built the stories on was not well known in his life, and that the Jesus of the Bible is more a reflection of what tales people wanted to believe in the early 2nd century, than a true account of a real person.

    • @andrewsuryali8540
      @andrewsuryali8540 2 роки тому +5

      That's largely because the bulk of what we have written about Jesus that have survived came from Greek writers detached from the time and place of Jesus' life. Things get more interesting if you delve into the Jerusalem Talmud as it depicts how the Jews perceived their "eccentric" co-religionists before the advent of what we can safely identify as "the Christianities".

    • @zyme607
      @zyme607 2 роки тому +1

      @@andrewsuryali8540 As far as I'm informed, the Jerusalem Talmud was not written before the 2nd century and its accusations appear more stereotypic than really specific.
      But read chapter 9 and 10 from the Letter to the Hebrews from the Christian bible. It argues extensively against the Jewish temple priests and the sacrifices in the temple. Today, we know that this temple was destroyed in 70 CE setting an end to priestly sacrifices. If the authors of Hebrews had known this, they surely would have mentioned it regarding it as god's punishment against the Jewish temple priests. In addition, after 70 CE there was no need to complain about temple priests that did not exist any more. But the authors obviously did not know about the destruction of the Jerusalem temple (one of the most impressive sacral building within the Roman Empire!), yet.
      Therefore, this letter appears to be older, but it contains quite similar religious messages as the other texts from the New Testament that surely had different authors. I think they are not story tellers, but probably very close to eye witnesses if not even eye witnesses themselves. By the way, for three centuries (since Alexander the Great) Greek was the international language of the region. Many jews used the Koine-Greek Septuagint-translation of the Jewish scriptures for not understanding Hebrew any more, especially plenty of pilgrims in Jerusalem! Why not the gospels in Greek? There is no reason to firmly assume detachment from the time and the place of Jesus' life. From Persia to Rome you better could get by with Greek than today with English in Europe (sorry for my mistakes but English is not my maternal language - a hellenistic jew would have done better in Koine-Greek than I in English).
      In addition, another point: According to Christians-hating Roman writer Tacitus, emperor Nero executed Christians in Rome as early as 3 or 4 decades (64 CE) after the crucifixion of Jesus to falsely blame them for a devastating fire in Rome. This means that christianity already was a large international movement at that early time, otherwise the victims had not drawn sufficient attention to serve Nero as a publicly well known scape goat. Therefore there must have been many old core messages that yield few space for later changes by story tellers.

    • @andrewsuryali8540
      @andrewsuryali8540 2 роки тому

      @@zyme607 We're talking specifically about the depiction of Jesus, not about the rest of Christian historiography. The point I was making is that all the depictions of Jesus from the Gospels onwards were written by Greeks or Hellenized people who, like you yourself pointed out, were already divorced from the Jewish cultural realties of the time.
      The Jerusalem Talmud, when it talks about the early "Christians", is actually very ignorant of "Christianity" because it recounts stories from a time when the Jews still thought this new religion was just a heretical sectarian movement within Judaism. After all, when the Jerusalem Talmud was finalized, there were only around 200,000 proto-Christians in all of the Roman Empire, while there were at least 4 million Jews in the Diaspora. As such, all the early "Christians" depicted in the stories are much closer to the historical reality. The Talmud talks about followers of Jesus and followers of James who were doing all these heretical things within the same generation as Jesus and James, before the destruction of the Temple. However, they are always depicted as fellow Jews with crazy notions, not different at all from how the Talmud depicts their longtime enemy the Sadducees. The writers of the Talmud were still living in the land, so these were all the Jesus followers they knew. As such their ideas of Jesus, seen from the lens of how his followers looked to them, are probably closer to how the historical Jesus would have been.
      My point is that, while it is true that all the depictions of Jesus in the Greek language sources point to the fact that those writers were inventing whatever Jesus they very well liked, there are sources without such agenda in Aramaic that point directly to the original person those fictional Jesuses were based on.
      Hebrews is irrelevant, BTW. It's just as Greek as the rest. Its writer is Pauline, so their Jesus was already Paul's celestial Christ that bears no resemblance to the crucified Jewish rabbi he's based on.

Would welcome more videos that look at the "other Christianities" since they may have been more numerous than than believed. Also interested in how far back the Oriental Orthodox Churches go, in securing their own identities and organizations, employing languages like Syriac, Armenian, Gez and Coptic and Arabic. Like how likely was Syriac from the start the language of the liturgy of certain churches, sidestepping dependence on of Koine Greek translations (and Hellenistic interpretation, since Aramaic was a lingua franca of the Near East, like Koine)...?
