Here we find a mistake that is often made about salvation according to basic Christian doctrine. Salvation didn't come by way of JESUS' crucifixion...which was a remittance (sacrifice) paid for our sins past, present & future. Salvation came by way of JESUS' resurrection through which we overcame death with HIM. Without the resurrection, the crucifixion of JESUS would have been the same as with all the other crucifixions carried out by the Romans. An analogy is the difference between a fine & a death sentence: the crucifixion paid the fine & the resurrection is a pardon for the death sentence🤔
Hey thanks for introducing me to Wondrium; I am in awe at how big the catalog of college style lectures is, and have found so many courses that I have been meaning to learn about for some time now. You have done quite a lot for my intellectual journey!
As someone who rejected Christianity as a teenager on doctrinal grounds, I've since found that the life of Jesus and his teachings makes far greater sense when seen from a non-dualist perspective. The Gospel of Thomas shows this was definitely part of the Early Christian movement

I have a speech that I've said so often to the so called "religious' when they come to mey door tryhing to convince me they have god in their front pocket, that I have nearly word for word about the importance of the Nag Hammadis. oF course, most deny the importance of them claiming them to be the mysterious, illegal "GNOSTICISM" of the evil boogyman devil. Well, the original black book of the devil was created to fool the ignorant (which those with the power made sure they kept in ignorance) and trick the stupid. If yhou read the "illegal" books yhou will find that jesis (even in the black devil book it says this) took some of his disciples aside to teach them secret things. Well? What ARE those secret teachings? They are definitelyh NOT in the devil book. So for those who refuse to seek the true meaning of jesix, well, you are going to have a very difficult time in hell. There is an old saying, "History is written by the victors". So in essence many things we have been taught as history has a strong likelihood of not being exactly how it actually went since it is being depicted from a certain perspective and not all perspectives involved.
The way I understand it, the Gospel of Thomas is for the esoteric. Those who have the eye to see beyond the veil. No wonder it wasn't included in the current Bible. Powerful words!
It "wasn't included" because it has more in common with Manichaeism. There is no evidence the author known as thomas knew Jesus, he was a disciple of Mani.
For some people the Bible is the word of God and they are fanatical to the point they wont entertain any dispute. I do not accept Bible literally because it has been doctored so many times. You are not allowed to change main text in. Gita or Quoran. If you read Maimonides' , " Guide to the perplexed" , he clearly says Bible uses symbolic language. It has one meaning on the surface and one meaning on the depth. If you change the text the inner meaning is lost. There is an element of arrogance in christianity, which makes people , particularly young adolescents rebellious. They are looking for some logic and reason whatever they read. There are so much illogical and absurd things in Bible that is unacceptable to any intelligent person. No wonder the churches are not full and number of deists, agnostics and atheists are rising. In England churches bought by hindus and moslems to be converted to temples and mosqes. In Scandinavian counties only 15 to 20 percent people attend churches. So if Christianity is survive they have to have a unified honest and humble approach. For me personally Faith is nothing but affirmation of the absurd. Absolutely useless. Milan
Powerful words indeed, but not for the esoteric. Everyone seems to misunderstand it, and very few appreciate what is declared. Seek and don't stop seeking till you find. If you seek, you will find, but many think they already know. Pity the ignorant and the pompous. The truth is beyond the capacity of the willfully blind.

Thank you for the video. Quite thought-provoking. Having watched this video, I feel emboldened to make the conjecture that aside from the theological differences between the Gospel of Thomas versus those of the canonical Gospels, one reason for rejection of the Gospel of Thomas from what evolved into mainstream Christianity is the idea that to know oneself is to know Christ leaves little if any room for mass control. In other words, Catholicism would not have flourished if people were more introspective. Both Catholicism and Eastern Orthodox Christianity were as much about political power, as any government past, present or future. Peter and Paul dictated their way to the masses. From what has been presented in this video, the Gospel of Thomas neither demands such dogmatic devotion, nor encourages others to pursue such blind devotion.

It’s important to understand that the Word of God tells us that due to one’s man sin it was necessary for Jesus to die. Apart from the shedding of blood there is no remission for our sins. While it might be true that the teaching is necessary to follow it as it’s not the teaching alone that saves mankind but His death as sacrifices. We know the Bible as we have has limited and selected books about Jesus. The collection of books were chosen by the priests gathered in Nicea, 333 AD. Some theologians discourage reading the gnostic gospel saying they are not authentic and dark. However, it's useful and helps understand the Bible, if you read them. Doubting Thomas isn't lesser to other disciples of Jesus. They were all unique individuals.
The Council of Nicea had absolutely nothing to do with establishing the Biblical Canon, and the first reference to such a claim was centuries after the council itself during medieval times

I find it so fascinating between this gnostic thought, the Upanishadic Advaita (just one interpretation I know, but it’s the trail of thought put emphasis on in the earliest ones IMO - Brihadaranyaka & Chandogya) and Buddhism which all have a sort of metaphysical pantheistic monism with solipsistic elements almost, all came within a similar timeline in human history. I’ve heard a historian call it the ‘Axial age’, a time in human history where humans became especially ‘self aware’ of internalizing truths and delving more into ‘who am I’ kind of questions coupled with questioning existing ethics and leading to to more egoless principles of non-violence, forgiveness, acceptance, etc. You see this in the fact that in ancient India, the sacrificial Vedic rituals were being completely questioned in the Upanishads (Mundaka) and likewise the figure of Christ & New Testament questioned the older order of Leviticus & Deuteronomy Sacrifices & ethics too, very striking similarities. Some people even bring up if psychedelics had a role to play in this sudden self awareness, hmm but I didn’t think so, it’s a bit grasping. Also love Origen, a literary genius.
What's difficult to nail down with scholarly accuracy is the degree to which ideas were 'floating around' from cultures we would have thought developed in relative isolation. Asoka sent Buddhist missionaries as far as Greece and Egypt for instance, although we may hardly detect a trace of its presence from what contemporary literature we may possess.

I think what we see is so many people wanting to reject the law of God and the harsh reality of salvation (even though the grace of God is immeasurable) and want to cling to this gnostic idea of oneness with the universe and if you connect to nature hard enough you’ll be able to transcend. Now, if you can give me very clear and precise evidence for these texts to be true, than maybe I’d reconsider them, but all seems like deception if you ask me. The devil uses the truth and twists it to make sound all nice and lovely so you’ll fall into his deception. There’s more than enough evidence to follow when it comes to The Bible’s texts.
@@blackhawk7r221 a lot of it completely goes against the 4 chronological Gospels, and even the other gnostic texts. There’s no evidence of it tracing back close enough to be considered plausible. Let’s not forget that last passage about woman lmaoo It’s junk.
Remember, men with an agenda to sell pick and chose what to use in the western Bible. For a much broader version, look at Orthodox or especially Ethiopian Christian.
@@blackhawk7r221 well I don’t have an agenda. I simply look at the evidence and also use my 27 years of knowledge and wisdom to make sense of what seams to be the most plausible truth. The gnostic texts just scream BS to me. There’s not enough evidence to take them seriously, and they contradict so much of what we do know and have evidence of. Ultimately I guess we don’t know, but I think God left enough for us to find the truth. I don’t think his true words are so trampled on that very few people actually know of it
5:56 it's an interesting choice of words - as if someone had a choice to include it or exclude it - but how would you include his death in a record of Jesus' sayings?
Just the first time I’m hearing about the gospel of Thomas and I’m really being drawn to what he’s talking about just listening to you, I’m going to go read the whole thing after this videos, due to his to how he was potrayed as doubting, he would have profound knowledge or point of view after Jesus told him to come confirmed he was actually risen!
Great video Filip! The non-dual themes seen in the Gospel of Thomas are certainly unique. I'm not sure if you're familiar with the notion that Saint Thomas traveled to India and established a Christian community (in the year 52 AD, according to these Christians). While I acknowledge that the Gospel of Thomas may not have been written by the apostle himself, I can't help but wonder if this text was inspired by some teachings of advaita vedanta in southern India.
I find that very unlikely, for several reasons. The idea that Thomas went to India is uncertain in itself, but even then it is a stretch to connect it with Advaita. After all, that particular school of Upanishadic interpretation had not appeared yet at that time. Although what you refer to as "non-dual" themes can certainly be found in the Upanishads themselves, if you interpret them in that way.
@@LetsTalkReligion Thanks for the response! I am aware that the notion of Thomas arriving in India is of unknown certainty. If you have any recommended readings on the subject I would love to learn more about the existing evidence.

@@LetsTalkReligionI definitely agree with your statement that Jesus going to India and being influenced is really not possible. But also 6 Sanyassa Upanishads - Aruni, Kundika, Kathashruti, Paramahamsa, Jabala and Brahma which date 300BCE (pre-Shankara) all have a strong Advaita outlook. So I think the core part of Advaita was circling around then too. But that doesn’t mean other interpretations weren’t around afcourse namely Bhedabheda.
8:47 I’m not sure what you mean, because in Matthew and Mark Jesus begins his ministry saying “the kingdom of heaven is at hand” like, now, not in the future

Awesome job, all your output is high quality but this one on Thomas is already one of my favorites. Thomas was a live document just like the other gospels. Some of it is independent and older, some of it is canonical gospel redaction. But what's important is that the Gospel of Thomas teaches nonduality. These Wisdom teachings cut away the unimportant mythos, they concentrate on what's important - the Truth about the Kingdom.
Paul warns against such things :in Galatians 1: But even if we, or an angel from heaven, should preach to you a gospel contrary to what we have preached to you, he is to be accursed! 9As we have said before, so I say again now, if any man is preaching to you a gospel contrary to what you received, he is to be accursed! The gospel of Thomas is illegitimate, ask any biblical scholar worth their salt and they'll tell u that, it was written over a century after Jesus had ascended, while the original gospels were written just a few decades after Jesus had ascended Gospel of Thomas was written by someone who never saw Jesus or any of the apostles
Gnosticism, is a spiritual relationship and special knowledge of God and creation? Almost like eating fruit, from a specific tree and gaining special knowledge of the Gardener...similar, no? It can refer to the strict belief that Jesus was purely a spiritual being, rather than flesh? For personal, generalized clarification, Thanx, Filip!
Gnosticism and gnosis are different terms that refer to related, though very distinct concepts. Gnosticism refers to a set of related doctrines and schools of thought that generally regard the material world as a pernicious illusion, usually created by a false God called the Demiurge. Gnosis refers to an altered state of consciousness that facilitates revelation, especially from mystical or divine sources. While Gnosticism leans heavily on the concept of gnosis (the very name is derived from it), the concept predates Gnosticism proper, and similar concepts were present in schools of thought that were definitely _not_ Gnostic or even antagonistic with Gnosticism.

Very well presented. I sometimes wonder about the Protestant Reformation and how it may have paralleled the early Christian period when there was no established orthodoxy and varied doctrines proliferated among the early converts. Out of the mainline Protestant churches, sprang smaller churches and one-off non-denominational. This seems to be very similar to how the so-called Gnostic groups sprang up in the period following the Apostolic missions. Orthodoxy had not been firmly established until after Christianity became legal by the Roman authorities and subsequently supported by the emperor. Many of my New Agey friends believed that the Council of Nicaea was held to marginalize the Gnostic groups, but I learned later that this was not correct. The meeting had the effect of marginalizing them, but the real target was a doctrine floated around by one of Orthodoxy's most influential bishops, Arius of Alexandria. Arius's teaching had gained large numbers of converts among the Germanic people who were living North of the Danube at the time. Arianism, not considered to be a Gnostic tradition, became a serious threat within the next century, so the Bishops who crafted the Nicene creed were not off the mark.
I’ve been reading the gospel of Thomas for the last 5 years! It’s a wonderful book that can lead to direct experience of God. As the book claims! Thanks for making this video

I know something about the GOT and I want to thank you and congratulate you for such a superb explanation. Unlike some "authorities" who lump GOT among the Gnostics, you did not. GOT is not Gnostic. I also listened to your excellent explanation of Platonism. I think if Thomas and Plotinus got together they would agree on many things. Plotinus is very abstract; Thomas is down to earth.Thank You.
I'm someone who reads scripture every day. Whether NT or OT. Probably a few months I've been Delving into nonconnonical ancient writings. I can't believe HOW MANY thier ARE ! I'm still at the point where it seems endless.
Everyone who claims the NT is some text that shouldn't be debated for its authenticity due to its canonical reference is a fool. They are ancient texts on the story and life of Jesus just like everything excluded from the New Testament. The so called Canon texts were also written long after Christ lived, long enough to justify the other texts. Jesus/Yeshua/Isa's life is a great historical mystery and we shouldn't be held guilty for trying to find the truth, gnostic or not.
@@bobbycecere1037 Isa is the name of Jesus used in the Quran. Interestingly, a Russian scholar during the 1800s met a buddhist monk who spoke of a 'saint Issa' of 'Saint Jesus' who preached teachings similar and allign with both Judaism and Buddhism 2000 years ago.
@Bobby Cecere In the late 19th century, Nicolas Notovitch, a Russian doctor traveled extensively in Tibet, India, and Afghanistan to chronicle his experiences and discoveries for his book, The Unknown Life of Christ. During his journey, Notovitch broke his leg in 1887 and was recovering at the Tibetan Buddhist Monastery of Hemis in the city of Leh in India. While he was being treated, the monks showed two large yellow-colored volumes of a document in Tibetan titles which read as the Life of Saint Issa. On translating the document, Notovich realized that the document was a story of a child named Jesus or Issa, meaning son of God, who was born in the first century to a low-income family in Israel. Jesus was called the son of the God by the Vedic scholars who taught him sacred Buddhist texts from the age of 13 to 29. Notovitch translated around 200 verses out of 224 verses from the document. During his stay at the monastery in 1887, the full scope and extreme level of enlightenment that Jesus attained were explained to Notovitch by one of the lamas. According to the Lama, Jesus was one of the twenty-two Buddhas, and he was greater than any one of the Dalai Lamas because he possessed the spirituality of the Lord. (BBC Documentary "the lost years"
Jesus DID say many times, "The kingdom of heaven is at hand", n told his apostles to go forth n spread the good news as such! Even in the canonical gospels, he says a lot that to me has always sounded more like some of these so called gnostic gospels, n the interpretations I've been given in church throughout my life, has rarely ever seemed a fit, to me, n I have had so many questions for so many years about what I've always been told Jesus meant by His teachings, when most have always sounded so clearly different than the way I was told to understand them. N I was even told more than a couple times, when I pushed forward with my questions n challenges, that if I were truly a Christian n saved by His grace n forgiveness, I'd understand the teachings to mean exactly what they were saying they meant, n since I didn't, I needed to ask forgiveness n to be saved, like I needed to really mean it this time, etc, or I was going to hell, etc, n that DEFINITELY didn't sit right with me, not being allowed to question anything or even mention that I was getting something very different, etc... Jesus never told people they HAVE to believe in Him n just believe everything He says at face value, n in fact, performed miracles to help get them to be able to start believing in Him n His teachings, but STILL condemned none who did not. He spoke about searching your own heart for the truth, n the one didn't need to go to temple or synagogue to find God, that they needed only to go inside themselves, n pray n worship God in spirit n truth. That's not at all what any churches preach, like they gatekeep forgiveness n salvation

Wrong.
Milan

Thanx wondrium for sharing insight about the gospel of Thomas on this platform.
His death is key to His resurrection which is key to our eternal Hope. Otherwise He could just left us with the teachings and skipped His sacrifice by death! Salvation comes by His sacrifice is why the thief on the cross who never followed the teaching but inherited salvation. One doesn’t negate the other both are necessary.
What I find fascinating is to see in how many different ways Jesus' life and words were interpreted depending on who spoke with him or wrote the text. This is only a confirmation that all churches actually have a biaised say into "teaching" the gospel, and that they will only allow/ use what is convenient for them.
I love to discover about all those other texts, it is fascinating.

Thanks.

Could there be multiple layers to Thomas? Could it be a version of what is called "The Q source", that had later Thomasine interpolations and subtractions?
Years ago I had read that Thomas was thought to be the sayings source for the other gospels, possibly even Que as you mentioned.
This is mystical insight and language. It may be gnostic in origin but similar insights can be found for example in St Paul. These sayings resonate with the teachings of St Francis

Sorry, who said that? Sounds like parallelomania. Advaita refers to a certain type of ontology not found in either gnosticism or the works of Mani, who this thomas was most likely a student of. Neoplatonism is a more likely influence.

There's certain degrees of modality between Mahayana/Vajrayana Buddhism and Christian Gnosticism, but it's still more within the closer realms of possibility, if anything Buddhism and Christianity emerges from the rubrics and matrixes of Hinduism and Judaism respectively to posits anti-caste and universalises their systems while expanding upon their constrictions towards other beings
Thomas implies you don’t need a church between you and god. So it wasn’t included in the Bible.

The sheer fact that so many people just accept the gnostic texts without anywhere near enough evidence to validate them shows just how many people refuse to accept the true words of God
We have 4 very reliable and very coherent texts that tell a vivid and clear story of Christ, and in these texts we have Thomas refusing to believe Christ was risen so clearly his faith was challenged
Then we have these “gnostic” texts without much evidence of their validation and they all often seem to contradict each other in more ways than one.

It is said Buddhism had spread west into the Levant by 100-0-bc and Jesus had learned studied it besides Jewish theology.

In your body, there is soul. In your soul there is divine. You yourself is the temple of god.
You sounds like me:)
What I have been told, make no sense at all.
i like way prefer this version of christianity i’m an atheist but something about this almost pantheistic version really resonates
