A first debut film doesn't necessarily mean the first feet of film they've ever shot. Doesn't mean they walked on the set for the first time. Lumet was a heavyweight in the tv industry and had a lot of experience making tv commercials. Orson Welles was a theatre heavyweight. He was called Radio and Stage's Boy Wonder. So from the very first feature, he enjoyed a big status. He was given complete freedom in all aspects.
@@AA-sn9lz Correct. Lumet, John Frankenheimer, William Friedkin, Arthur Penn, and Robert Altman all made huge marks on American television and subsequently returned to that medium later in their careers.
Believe it. The Academy usually gets things WRONG. Another reason the awards-obsession among younger generations today is so laughable. As if it truly means anything...
It had a bit to do with bad timing as well. Twelve Angry Men lost to Bridge On The River Kwai Dog Day Afternoon One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest Network Rocky any other year those three would have won
Some years ago I had a teacher who worked under Lumet, and said he was the most hyper efficient director imaginable. Extremely well planned and organized. In an industry where 12-16 hour days are common, schedule and budget overruns equally so, his shoots were just 8 hour days, with 10 hours being a rare long day, and the films completed on time, and on budget. Every day he knew exactly how the day was going to go, and it went just that way. Brilliant.
When I read His Book ( Making Movies ) 9 years ago. I understood very precisely what the director's job is behind the camera. May his soul ♋️ rest in peace .
Dog Day Afternoon, Serpico, Network, Murder on the Orient Express, 12 Angry Men, Fail-Safe, The Pawnbroker, The Verdict, Prince of the City. Just a great body of film work.
GOAT! He made movies that literally changed my views in life. His movies are true art. They have a purpose. They have important themes. They tell stories that not many know. Legend!
Who better to present it to him than Al Pacino? The man who helped create two of his greatest movies. Rest in Peace Sidney, Heaven is now occupied by yet another master of cinematic art.
Sidney Lumet directed an extraordinary body of films, encompassing 12 Angry Men [ great work by Fonda, Cobb and Warden]; The Pawnbroker [ Steiger's best performance ] ; Long Day's Journey Into Night [ terrific work by Robards, Hepburn, Richardson ] The Verdict [ Newman's best screen work ] Network [ Finch's Oscar, Dunaway's Oscar and Holden's exemplary work] The Hill [ Connery's best dramatic performance ] and Serpico and Dog Day Afternoon [ two of Pacino's best].
I forgot that he did Long Day's...I love that film. I would say that that is Kate Hepburn's best film performance. I agree with your assessments, for the most part. Lumet was one of the greats, though. Hands down!
I can't believe he had to get an "honorary"Oscar... this man should've had at least 5 Oscars under his belt! The impact his movies continue to have is really all that matters in the end. The messages he sent are priceless!!
If humbleness paves the way for greatness, then these two artists are undoubtedly among the greatest ever in the business. RIP Sidney Lumet and Long life Al Pacino. Thank you very much for sharing!
as much as i admire sidney and his work, i might be responsible for atleast 5000 views out of 70000 on this video because of al pacino. how often do you see him speaking so comfortably and charmingly at an award ceremony. i wish i could live his life
What a classy man. I recently started working my way through Sidney's filmography. I finished Dog Day Afternoon on the day of his passing and it truly affected me. The man is absolutely brilliant and it really is a true loss. He also gives one hell of a speech. I also picked up his book Making Movies and I can't put it down.
A true master director and really shocking he never won Oscar even once for all the great films he done. I know this is a touching tribute handing him a Honorary Award but it's to the Academy eternal shame they didn't award him one for the job he done.
My !!2005 must have been the time Academy finally came to it’s senses !!, both scorcesse getting his first oscar and Sidney lumet getting his lifetime achievement, even though both should have had a couple oscars already for their prior masterpieces.
Agree. The same thing with Robert Altman, who should've won for Nashville, The Player, Gosford Park, but he, also only got an honorary award from the academy. Well, better late than never, I suppose. And Scorsese had to wait way too long, but I suppose they were finally getting a bit embarrassed with all of the slights.
It is downright sinful that the Academy chose not to recognize one of the greatest directors who ever lived: Sidney Lumet with an Oscar in competition. He should have won in 1977 for NETWORK. Giving an Oscar to John Avildsen for ROCKY was just a waste. At least Mr. Lumet lived long enough to get an Honorary Oscar. RIP.
Thank you so much for posting this video I surly remembered this speech back in 2005!!!!! Awsome speech!!!! "I like to thank the movies." RIP Sidney Lumet. Your films will truly live on forever!!!!!! BTW, did anyone catch Morgan Freeman winking at the camera with his Oscar? Priceless
Great director, 12 angry men, dog day afternoon, network. One of the greatest director with Kubrick, Hitchcock, Lang, Ford, Forman .... We miss you gentleman !!
I'm so sad he's dead. He's just been around for as long as I can remember and until his last days he was making great films. 50 Years, he was doing his thing.
A true classic! And so deserving. His last film ranks up with his best. Sure, he could have-- and should have-- won earlier. But the Oscars is a democratic process and often people who are HOT at a time get it. Still there are these great moments.
this is meant to be about sidney lumet, and he was an extraordinary director and deserves all the praise he ever got, but.... dat morgan freeman wink doh 0:38 sly AF
A great director who deserved this Oscar. RIP. Although there's something wrong when they guy introducing the award talks for longer than the recipient. I thought Pacino was never going to stop.
This was one of the best oscars ever.......oscars please return back tto that old favour and try to have a big stage set like this in the next year instead of oval shaped stage sets....thank you.
one of the most prolific director's ever. from 1957 to 1999 he makes 1 movie a year continuously. that is insane. only woody allen is more prolific than him because not only allen directs he also writes.
Great director, will miss the quality of his work during all these years, like Dog Day Afternoon, 12 Angry Men and many others. Thanks for such wonderful entertainment.
Can you believe "12 Angry Men" was his film debut? I mean that film is straight up classic and it was his first one! What a legendary director.
IKR. Citizen Kane is Orson Welles' directorial debut, and that's saying a lot considering that it is arguably the greatest movie of all time.
Best film ever made!

Dog Day Afternoon, Serpico, Network, Murder on the Orient Express, 12 Angry Men, Fail-Safe, The Pawnbroker, The Verdict, Prince of the City. Just a great body of film work.

RIP Sidney Lumet (June 25, 1924 - April 9, 2011), aged 86
You will be remembered as a legend

Twelve Angry Men is my favorite film of all time. RIP, Master.
Btw Morgan Freeman's wink holding an Oscar is COOL.
Greatest director ever. How the heck did he not win an Oscar?

I would add to the list his memorable swang song "Before the Devil knows you are dead"
The oscar prize being honored, not other way around

From 12 Angry Men to Before the Devil knows you're Dead, almost all Lumet's career are filled with cinema masterpieces
I just discovered today, a bunch of movies I like are from him. It turns out, almost all his films are great. And there are fifty years worth of them.
Lumet is one of the best directors of all time, If not the best.
When pacino talks , all the rest listen and consider , what a great actor and personality
when he name...SPIELBERG, SCORSESE, COPPOLA, KUROSAWA....wow....the names resonate in all the room!!!!!!!!....what a legends he name it

12 Angry Men got me into cinema.
Network is my favorite film.
I just watched Prince of the City tonight and was blown away.
