    What the Hollywood Academy did is a tremendous shame. Give nothing more than an honorary Oscar to Donald Sutherland, without ever having nominated him in any category in his 50-year acting career. I wouldn't know where to hide, out of pure shame.

    194 credits at IMDB at this point for the Donald. Some very small parts, some TV-shows and lots of movies.. Drama, Comedy, War, Thrillers and everything in between. The success of the movies have been widely varied over the years but most of the generations of movie-watchers remember him from something. I would like to recommend one mini-TV-series called "Human Trafficking" from 2005 and also the movie "The Best Offer" from 2013. The TV-show I remember not so much because of the story but the acting. The movie is one of my favorite movies and there is one scene that I understand could put off a wider audience (hence it's not a huge movie everyone has seen) but the rest of the movie really got to me. Highly recommended. If you could recommend me one TV-show or movie Donald Sutherland was in.. Which would it be?

  • @Femsa2012
    @Femsa2012 5 років тому

    His first movie was "The Dirty Dozen" in which he played the imbecilic "Pinckney". The movie had three other past or future Oscar winners in the cast---Ernest Borgenine, Lee Marvin and George Kennedy. I doubt any of them back then even dreamed that Sutherland/Pinckney would some day get a career Oscar. But it is entirely well deserved. He most certainly should've gotten an Oscar nomination back in 1981 for "Ordinary People" but the Academy reversed the roles---it put the teenage Tim Hutton in the Supporting Actor category (which he won) instead of the Best Actor category, which was really the role he had but which is almost unheard for a teen actor to get considered. And Judd Hirsch got a Supporting Actor nod for that movie as well. That left Sutherland to be put in the Best Actor category but the five nominations went to Robert DeNiro (Raging Bull/winner), Peter O'Toole (The Stunt Man), John Hurt (The Elephant Man), Robert Duvall (The Great Santini) and Jack Lemmon (Tribute). Of those five DeNiro, Hurt and Duvall certainly merited it. Sutherland's role in "Ordinary People" is the one that people remember though rather than O'Toole or Lemmon from that year.

    • @andyawardian1868
      @andyawardian1868 6 років тому +57

      No, the honorary oscar for Jackie Chan was not silly. It was a bold and refreshing choice, which showed: The academy acknowledges achievements beyond the typical "oscar acting". Chan had (has!) an incredible career and delivered within his metier one fine performance after another. But in case of Donald Sutherland, I am with you: No oscar nominiation ever sounds strange. His best shot was "Ordinary People", for which he was snubbed - maybe because he was campaigning for lead actor and Timothy Hutton "just" for supporting. But Hutton was definetily the leading man and Sutherland the supporter. Ironically, Hutton won - and both would have had no chance in the leading category against Robert De Niro / Raging Bull...

      dennis walker Probably people making Oscar Bait movies, and trying desperately to win an oscar (Will Smith) should learn that you can be "You"... And still impact the world with the talent you have... Jackie Chan is no Bruce Lee in martial arts movies, nor is he Donald Sutherland when it comes to acting, but there can't be another Jackie Chan! Because he is truly unique and the world appreciates that... Y shouldn't the Academy? 😉

      Elizabeth, I like that phrase: - a presence unsurpassed. It is accurate and fitting.

    My husband and I were in Toronto about 17 years ago. We had checked into our hotel, and were walking around, it was autumn. We were looking for someplace to have dinner, nothing fancy. We stopped in front of an old tavern looking kind of place, the menu was posted next to the door. We walked up to it and was reading what they had to offer. We noticed somebody walked up behind us and was reading too. “Does anything look good?” Matt and I looked at each other with the same confused shock on our faces. This guy sounded like Donald Sutherland. We turned around to answer, it WAS Donald Sutherland. We answered it looked pretty good and went inside, he followed us in. We didn’t see where he was seated. It was SO weird. Then we remembered, he is Canadian.

    One of the greatest has left us. R. I. P. Donald Sutherland, immensely versatile actor, funny, scary, intense, you name it.

    For those of you who have not watched the film 1900 (directed Bernardo Bertolucci) in 1976....this man plays the most terrifying fascist during the rise and fall of fascism in Italy. An extraordinary actor. Supported by two up and coming actors Robert Di Nero and Gerard Depardieu.

    Deserves it. I've seen him in so many films and he always gives a fantastic performance. Glad they do this because I feel so many good actors are snubbed

    One of the greatest to ever do it. Everytime he appeared in a film, he left quite a big mark, whether as the lead, supporting, or a cameo.
    RIP.

    An extraordinary and singular talent. He’s been such a gem in so many movies and I’ve never seen him do a bad turn and he makes every movie more enjoyable. I love that such an eccentric actor has been a huge star and remains an actors actor and a fan favourite. What a legend. You cannot love movies without loving Donald Sutherland.

    I had the pleasure of serving him an espresso one evening, at the deserted restaurant I was running. I was taken aback by his sudden appearance. The next evening, we crossed paths on the street, he recognized me. He said something very amusing with regards to me, which to my ashame I have forgotten. But it must have been memorable. He was a great actor, and appears to have been a wonderful man.

      Utter respect for someone who remembers wait staff, out of context, the next day. He is as I thought, an honorable man.
