One of the best Best Actor fields in recent memory, and that's even with such glaring omissions as Harrison Ford in The Fugitive, Bill Murray in Groundhog Day, Harvey Keitel in The Piano, Kevin Kline in Dave, Michael Douglas in the underrated Falling Down, Kevin Costner in A Perfect World, Robin Williams in Mrs. Doubtfire, Kenneth Branagh as Benedick in Much Ado About Nothing, and so many others, all from the same year! Not to mention Daniel and Anthony each gave a SECOND performance that year that was receiving some awards buzz, from The Age of Innocence and Shadowlands, respectively. Tom also had a second film out that year that charmed the pants off of us and went on to be a rom-com classic, Sleepless in Seattle.
Phoenix Clouden - It took me awhile to watch it, too. It’s just that the material is so heavy, so important, and so on point that at the time of its release, I just couldn’t. I wasn’t mature enough to handle it. And it depressed me terribly at first. Now it’s one of my fav films of all time.
Wished you could have seen it earlier, Phoenix so that you would be able to watch it many more times. One of my top ten movies and the Neil Young song only added to the beauty of this movie.
Phoenix Clouden - Philadelphia - an amazing fantastic film! For the Oscar my choice would have been In The Name Of The Father with Daniel Day-Lewis. You may want to look into it. It does require a certain knowledge of british/irish history
@WKPH Cincinnati That blows me away that you waited 20 years. I'm also thrilled that you are here because that movie was so beautiful and true. I was 11 when it came out and I am changed because of it.
I'm glad that Tom Hanks had managed to acknowledge Denzel Washington for his work on "Philadelphia" because he too was amazing in the film and should have at least gotten a Best Supporting Actor nod that year.
Christoffer Sundberg - I agree. The 90s was the best decade for films. Also, the 80s was the best decade for films. And the 2000s was the best decade for films. Oh, and the 60s, 70s, 30s, 40s, and 50s were the best decades for films. Agreed.
What an amazing speech, especially when he talked about the thousands of men who died well before their time. Between 1984 and 1995 I lost nearly 100 friends from AIDS. Many were diagnosed and dead within weeks. Tom Hank's portrayal took me back and reminded me of a truly tragic time of loss. I honor them all.
That was a TERRIBLE period, and I am so sorry you were forced to watch so many people you loved be marginalized, demonized, and suffer such lonely deaths. My dear boss of many years lost his oldest son to AIDS. Unlike many parents at that time, he and his wife never left their son’s side. After their son’s death they shared how shocked and devastated they were to watch so many young men with AIDS, suffering and dying alone, without a single friend or family member at their side. Those men’s deaths affected my amazing boss so much that he volunteered to sit with dying AIDS patients 3 times a week for over 2 years. But the experiences were so upsetting for him, he was forced to stop when his blood pressure rose to dangerous levels. Thank God things have improved so dramatically for AIDS patients and the LBGTQIA community in general. Tragically, that tendency to marginalize and demonize prevails today, and we are once again faced with our failure to protect and defend minorities and immigrants as a result of fear-mongering and propaganda!
Suzanne Marie well in their defense back then they still barely knew what it was only that gay men had it and were dropping like flies . It was thought to be contagious. I do wonder tho if any of those that abandoned their sick love ones feel guilt over it
I was in medical school in Philly during that period and men with HIV were pariahs...pharma was rushing to make anti retrovirals and there few effective meds. This movie, especially the ending, is required viewing now. Of the 30 men and women from a Philly gay alliance recruited as extras, only 1 survived those years
Tom and Denzel were very brave to do this film about someone dying of AIDS. I went to see the preview in London with a friend who subsequently died from the same terrible illness related to AIDS and his partner had died a few months before. I pray that they have been in heaven for all these years, free of pain and the suffering which AIDS brings. I myself was diagnosed with an AIDS related illness a few years later after their deaths, but was saved by new medication which wasn’t t available for my friends. I wish they could have help on a few years, to be still here with me, for selfish reasons. But with the world as it is , full of hate and lies, full of people who are so incredibly rich on the backs of those paid incredibly little. My friends are better off in Heaven with the other angels. ❤
Have you seen the Australian film "Holding The Man"? It's based on the book by Timothy Conigrave, who sadly succumbed to AIDS shortly after completing it. I recommend both the film and the book.

This was such an incredible year for Best Actor, each nominee deserved it, but Tom edged them out. That speech was brilliant. Tom Hanks is the best actor I've grown up watching.
And *brave*. You cannot - I cannot, and I lived thru it - imagine the climate this film was made in, the beliefs held about perfectly sane reasonable people, not only about AIDS but about homosexuality generally. I pray we never will again, for as bad as it is in parts of our world, and I don't pretend it doesn't look like getting worse, we never sink to such lows again in how we accept our fellow humans being seen. Whatever higher power you do it don't believe in, pray they have mercy on us, because so many of us had so little for Their Children.
They all deserved to win, but reason why Hanks win is this speech. Only Neeson could say something so impact and important to that and other generations. I trully believe that Philadelphia and Tom with Denzel with their unbelievable performance helped and maybe still helping a lot of young gays in their difficult life to achieve acceptance. if people still talking about this movie, great actors and this speech 30 years later it really means something. I watched all 5 movies and others 4 actors was really amazing but Tom win was and still is something more.
This car , why did I keep the car two people , the pin 1 people and it’s made of gold two more people ...... I could have saved one more person but I didn’t ... I didn’t
Solid as rocks he was really good in cast away. I agree that he shouldn’t have won for Philadelphia as Liam Neeson was more deserving of the win but Tom Hanks was absolutely deserving of his Forrest Gump win.
When I saw this movie, as we were leaving the theater I told my fiance, if Tom Hanks doesn't get the Academy Award, something's wrong! I was so happy when he won! ❤ ✌️🤘
Funny fact: Emma Thompson introduced Anthony Hopkins who was nominated in the Remains of the day where she starred too. She also starred in In the name of the father, and introduced Daniel day Lewis's performance, too and she was nominated as supporting actress. The previous year she won the Oscar for Howard's end and the Oscar was presented to her by Anthony Hopkins (her Co star in Howard's End) who won the previous year for silence of the lambs. That was cool.
I’ll be honest I haven’t seen Philadelphia or any of the other nominated films, but Liam Neeson killed this movie. He was the perfect Schindler, so elegant in the way he executed the role and that last scene where he cries about how he could have gotten more Jews as workers. He will make you cry without a shadow of a doubt.
Liam was spectacular, period. With that said, you really should watch Philadelphia ASAP. If Liam made you cry, be ready for more tears when you get to watch Tom’s performance. I love both movies, both performances, but I think Philadelphia has a slight edge over schindlers list.
I’m so glad to have you as a fan of mine, i would love us to talk more on hangout you can drop your email address to know more about your thoughts?? and advise for me thank you ?
I love Tom. Not just as the brilliant actor he is, but as a human. That humanity really shines through his characters and acting, hence the brilliance. His lasting love for his wife is so moving (so was that speech). Philadelphia, a masterpiece that really impacted me when I saw it for the first time and will always do.
I’m so glad to have you as a fan of mine, i would love us to talk more on hangout you can drop your email address to know more about your thoughts?? and advise for me thank you ?
And Hopkins deserved even more nominations than he got. His roles in The Elephant Man, Howards End, Shadowlands, The Edge, and The World's Fastest Indian all deserved nominations too imo.
FINALLY, an Oscar winner's clip in which ALL of the nominees' excerpts are shown! While I tend to agree with the Academy's choice for best actor/actress, the other actors were nominated for a reason too, and I would like to see why. Not to mention the fact that these excerpts inspire me to watch the films from which they're taken. Thank you!!
This was the year I was SO TORN between who should win. Every single one of these actors deserved the Oscar, but only one could win. I can't say I was disappointed that Tom Hanks won over everyone else...I can only say I was disappointed they ALL didn't win one.
I agree 110%...I came back here to see some Oscar vids, and WOW...for any single gentleman in this elite group of 5 to win the 1993 Best Actor...VERY serious competition...
Wow what an incredibly tough category from truly iconic films from 1993. So so proud of Tom Hanks for his consecutive wins for Philadelphia and Forrest Gump! Still proud to this day of Laurence Fishburne and Angela Bassett for their nominations for portraying Ike and Tina as well.
Tom has such a gift for speaking from his heart, with an articulate delivery that moves us all. His portrayal of the dying attorney in Philadelphia established his place forever among the best of Hollywood. Kudos to
They were all well deserving of acknowledgment for their work and commitment to their characters. We seldom see such commitment to characters nowadays in film.
To be honest, everyone in this category deserved the oscar that year
I so agree
When we had great movies not just big comic books.
Very few movies like this anymore, and the ones we do get nobody sees.
The golden age of cinema. And you are so right, all of them would have been deserving of this win.

This had to be one of the best group of actors ever. Liam in schindlers list I feel should have won but any of these performances are worthy
no the real competition was a year later between tom hanks, john travolta and morgan freeman
I agree. Liam should have won
What a gracious thank you speech from Mr. Hanks❤
All the performances were absolutely stunning that year
Glad I grew up in these times with great movies and more importantly honorable people.
And to think he got his big break playing a crossdresser.
As much I love Tom Hanks , Liam should have won...his portrayal of Oskar Schindler was riveting!
Tom deserved it IMO. Heartbreaking performance.
Totally agree
This car , why did I keep the car two people , the pin 1 people and it’s made of gold two more people ...... I could have saved one more person but I didn’t ... I didn’t
Dominic Machado yes absolutely. Tom Hanks was more deserving in Forrest Gump.
What a heartfelt speech...this film made me weep. Love Tom Hanks in anything!!!
They all deserved that Oscar!
What a year - I'm glad Tom won, but all the performances were great! His speech was AMAZING
A humble loving appreciative human being that appeals to our best selves .
WOW what a stellar line up of actors! 😮
Liam should have won
Liam was spectacular, period. With that said, you really should watch Philadelphia ASAP. If Liam made you cry, be ready for more tears when you get to watch Tom’s performance. I love both movies, both performances, but I think Philadelphia has a slight edge over schindlers list.
You said you haven't seen any of the films, and then said Liam Neeson "killed the movie." Wait, let me guess: Gen Z.
I would give the Oscar to each and everyone of the nominees 😂
What a speech
A wonderful year for movies
5 amazing actors in one category sheesh
I’m so glad to have you as a fan of mine, i would love us to talk more on hangout you can drop your email address to know more about your thoughts?? and advise for me thank you ?
What a great year! Five great actors all giving arguably carreer best performances.
I love Tom. Not just as the brilliant actor he is, but as a human. That humanity really shines through his characters and acting, hence the brilliance. His lasting love for his wife is so moving (so was that speech). Philadelphia, a masterpiece that really impacted me when I saw it for the first time and will always do.
That speech... Bravo
They should’ve given him an extra one for his speech. That broke my heart, I could not get enough of it.
This is why Tom Hanks is one of our greatest actors.😎😢👍🍻
Gay men whether they had HIV or not felt the sincerity of Tom’s Oscar speech, it needed to be said and it needed to be heard .
Wow what a year for great films
Tom Hanks is just a great human being, I think everyone can learn from him, not an ounce of hate in him just love and compassion
Isaac Kappy RIP
WHOA! what a year!
What legends!! All of them
I’m so glad to have you as a fan of mine, i would love us to talk more on hangout you can drop your email address to know more about your thoughts?? and advise for me thank you ?
Anthony Hopkins seems like he was always nominated
Lucille 11 HES an amazing actor
Yeah, he's that good.
Because he is THE actor
Lol
And Hopkins deserved even more nominations than he got. His roles in The Elephant Man, Howards End, Shadowlands, The Edge, and The World's Fastest Indian all deserved nominations too imo.
His speech. My God. I remember when he won this. To hear that speech again....I'm in tears!
KILLER GOOD YEAR FOR BEST ACTOR! WHAT A STRONG YEAR!
Such a beautiful and eloquent speech. Thank you Tom!
What a lovely speech
THIS IS AN INSANE LIST OF AMAZING MEN IN AMAZING FILMS!!!! I JUST CAN'T
I like the fact that Tom got to give his entire speech, without having music play over him to try and get him to cut it short.
Best Actor, Actress, and Director tend to not get played off.
It's wild this film makes me cry EVERY TIME
THAT is how you accept an entertainment award.
My goodness, what a speech! 😢❤
