michael jacksoooooon ... i remember as a kid "im older than you maggie." playing on the giant 4 player arcade joysticks while having fun gaming on "moonwalker" aka smooth criminal by michael jackson!!! yeeees dear old michael has a video game out back in 80-90s era
One of the greatest music videos ever made. The choreography was more difficult than any modern dance number today. Nothing even comes close. That amount of rehearsal and preparation is rarely matched today. His videos had a quality and a magic that has never been duplicated. There was only one MJ.
Michael was a genius and not just musically. He understood the new world of music videos and used it not just as something to look at while listening. He made it a coherent whole, telling the story of the song with sight and sound and dance and just utter creativity. You originally thought MJ was just scatting? I thought he was singing Annie are you walking? 😆 Terrific video! Thank you Trixie. And super great reaction, Maggie! 🕺🏽
Here’s an interesting fact: Jackson’s familiar refrain of “Annie, are you OK?” carries more meaning than just the narrator asking a question. The line is inspired by Resusci Anne, the name of the model of doll used to teach CPR. Jackson combined the question trainees learn to ask, “are you OK?” with the name of the doll to create the iconic line.
The lean was done with special shoes that have a v notched into the heal. They slide the heal into a v that is screwed to the floor. The v in the floor holds the shoes to the floor. They are not nailed. And ofcourse michael and his dancers were in excellent physical condition to perform the stunt.
This is also only a small portion of a longer video. The full video is over 15 minutes long and tells a small story. You should find the full length video when you can. You can find the diagram and patent on the shoes they were using where the heal hooks into an anchor (nail) in the floor to be able to lean and then unhook at will making a smooth transition. He's used this in live performances as well thus disproving the "cable" theory.
I always liked MJ's songs, and then I saw the movie, which is really very entertaining, in fact, those are scenes from a movie, called Moonwalker, and he performs several songs, like smooth criminal, speed demon, Bad, among others, more songs, I hope that one day you can react to it. Greetings from Mexico.
I was 7 when this video came out. I watched it on MTV with my parents and sister. All waiting impatiently in full anticipation of what it could be and were blown away. Good memories.
If you had seen this performed at one of his live shows you would know that the lean was not done with cables. It had to do with the shoes attaching to something of the stage floor. The trick was that he and his dancers could attach and detach instantly. It was not obvious to the audience that this was taking place.
His name's not Jacko, it's Jackson. Jacko is an offensive and hurtful nickname. Edit: It would seem that you're the one who got their panties in a bunch. I'd suggest you look up "Wacko Jacko", then continue your pointless tirade.
@melaniemagdalene1616 wow chill out who got your panties in a bunch?! Jacko is not offensive or hurtful, it's merely a shortened version of his surname, just like Mel is a short version of Melanie or Chris is short for Christopher or Christian, Mike is short for Michael, Jules short for Julian or Julianne etc etc...need I go on?? Or are you going to crawl back to your hole once you realise you made a mountain out of a mole hill and took this way out of proportion?
@melaniemagdalene1616 I do know the term wacko jacko...I was born and raised in the 70's! And before you start spouting "going off on tirades!" I never used the term wacko did I? No I don't believe I did. And even if I did you do realise you can have the utmost respect for someone and still make fun of them, where I come from its called ribbing, in other parts of the world its called banter. As said I was born in the 70's, I listened to Michael Jackson both solo and as part of the Jackson 5. I loved every song he released because I respected him as an artist. What he did in his private life was just that....private and didn't deter me in the slightest as to his quality of music. He is still (postumously) one of thr best artists in the world. Does that mean I can't poke fun at him?(i didn't but you are free to speculate in your own weird way!) Yes I can. Is it disrespectful? No, because for some that is how they show their respect. If you cannot have broad shoulders in life, then don't put yourself out there. Rantful tirade over!
This music video is actually a portion of a short film/movie that MJ did called "Moonwalker". It's about 90min, but worth it. 1 of a few albums that i know of where the artist did this ("Yellow Submarine" is Sgt Papper's Lonely Hearts Club Band by the Beatles, "Interstella5555" is Daft Punk's anime movie from the 80s)
When the window breaks and everything goes weird? Ever since I was a kid, I would always like to think that the Magic fills the club with MJ. When the window broke all the Magic left. But MJ can produce the magic and they beg him to do it. He opens his arms and the chord plays, then he agrees (nodding) and then everything starts to get reanimated and BOOM. Magic time.....yeah, I saw the whole movie Moonwalker more than a few times when I was a kid. This whole video is a short piece of a short film at the end of it. MJ's getting hunted by people who want to addict the kids to drugs. Then he turns into a robot, kills the bad guys, turns into a spaceship, and leaves. Yeah, that happens. I used to LOVE that movie. I am unashamed. PS: Watching the subtitles try to keep up with MJ's awesomeness was beautiful. Maggie, you're a treasure!
Wonderful reaction! I think this is his best work ever. I think before he died, he was working on a masterpiece to top this one, but we never got to see it. My fav song of his is Man In The Mirror, but this is his best vid. Even better than Thriller, which was good, but this is great!!!!
My mum cried for a day when he passed first time I seen her so passionate I didn't know what she was crying about just got home from work what a shame he had a lot more to share all my love to his family for mj
“Annie, are you OK?” carries more meaning than just the narrator asking a question. The line is inspired by Resusci Anne, the name of the model of doll used to teach CPR. Jackson combined the question trainees learn to ask, “are you OK?” with the name of the doll to create the iconic line.
Imagine how good it was in the 80's! It was better quality than most TV and movies. I mean, it still holds up watching it 35yrs later. It was mind blowing good in the 80's.
They didn't use cables, its special shoes that have notches in them to connect to part of the floor where they slide out of it. It still requires a good amount of strength to pull yourself back up after leaning forward.
The heels of the shoes have slots in them. They slip over bolts in the floor. Then they lean forward. You have to have a strong core to maintain the straight body while leaning.
I'm not a native English speaker was a little difficult for me to understand when I listened to this song for the first time. But for sure I understood ' Anie are you okay' 😂😂
In the Smooth Criminal music video they used wires. When performed live on stage it was shoes with special hooks into the stage with Anti-Gravity machines.
those were called a Nano too. just a different version. i have one still and it works fine. hard to charge though cause it has a proprietary apple cable.
What a magnificent tribute to Fred Astaire. He had sent him a message after "Billie Jean 1984" (first Moonwalk)... Fred Astaire wrote to him "Thank you young man. I can die, I know that the next generation is assured"... Michael kept this telegram until his death. This video was his tribute...
For the film, the lean was done using cables - he then developed and patented a special shoe combined with retractable bolts in the floor to be able to do the same lean on stage. The effect was the same, but he used a couple of different ways over the years. By the way, how did you enjoy doing Rake’s Progress in Stockholm? I was working at the venue, so was a bit surprised to see a familiar name on the poster. :-)
The reason that video was so cinematic is because it's from his movie Moonwalker. If you never seen it I would suggest taking a peek. Great movie, great reaction😁😁
Lean in the video is done via wires, but in live performance they have a pattent from Michael where they have a hole in the shoes where a nail can get stock in so the lean can be performed live.
A lot of people get confused about the kids and the kidnapping of the girl but this 10 minute video is only a snippet of the Smooth Criminal short film. The original video for Smooth Criminal is over 40 minutes long. Michael was a great short film creator as he believed in a story around the songs and the lyrics.
You should watch the whole movie, Moonwalker. As its all music video type of thing it can be a bit difficult to follow the story, so to speak, but still worth a watch.
So what was Jackson's secret? The special shoes. There is even a 1993 patent filed, among others, by Jackson himself, according to which these shoes were equipped with a heel slot specially designed to slide the foot forward.
No, cables were not used at all for "the lean". Michael Jackson actually holds a patent for special shoes designed with a hooking mechanism under the heal. Nails pertrude from the floor and the dancers simply slide their feet forward to hook the heads of the nails into their heal. This anchors them so they can lean as far forward as possible without falling. When back upright, they simply slide their feet back to unhook themselves, then the nails are retracted back into the floor. This effect was also performed live on stage throughout his concert tours and even broadcast live on televised performances (such as his Live in Bucharest concert that was aired on HBO back in the 90's and is now available on UA-cam). However, even with this technology employed, the move is still very straining and painful on their backs, and there have been instances where it failed to work perfectly. So in the end, it's still an amazing feat for a dancer to pull off.
In the video cable harnesses were used and then removed in post production. In order to perform in live he filed a patent for a device he invented that allows his shoes to lock into a mount on stage. During the performance of the song there is a breakdown where the lights go down allowing a dancer to distract the audience with one of those fake cartoon bombs while he and his back up dancers move to that side of the stage and lock in. The lights come up and they perform the lean using his invention. There is plenty of video on here showing what I'm talking about. There's even one video that shows one of the dancers almost blowing the spot because he got stuck when he dismounted stumbling a little. No matter how it's done. It's really cool and creative. Who thinks of doing something like that and then creates a way to replicate it live too?
no cables used it was explained in an interview where MJ had shoes specialy made so that nails or bolts rise up from the floor and attatch themeslves to a socket in the wearers shoe allowing them to lean so far without falling they are literally stuck to the floor, they even do the lean on live performances where cables and wires would be imposible to use as it is the middle of the routine
Notice that when they do the inclination and return back they slide one foot first and then the other...that is to remove the nails that were in the buried floor that the sole of the shoes grabbed
The lean is done by a bolt that comes up from the floor and there is a cut out in the center front of the heels of one shoe that they slide the blot into. This locks the shoe heel into place stopping it from raising up off the ground. Once the lean is o er they slide the shie back freeing the bolt which then retracts back into the floor. There is a patent document for it only with illustrations if you want to better understand it.
This clip is based on the Girl HUnt Ballet sequence from the musical The Band Wagon (1953) with Fred Astaire and Cyd Charisse. Many of the dance movements are copied from that sequence.
from what i understand...the "lean" is preformed with special shoes that have like a place to catch an anchor on the floor. so there is a spot and the shoe is locked in and you can lean. I believe it was in the heels of the shoe and you just hook into an anchor (bolt?) on the floor.
"This intro is like a Disney movie. " Honestly from what I remember of it (it's been a while since i saw the whole thing) it really basically was a Disney movie. If not by them heavily inspired.

I'm turning 55 in a couple of weeks and Michael Jackson's classic videos still give me goose bumps when I watch them.

Greatest music artist ever. This is NOT debatable!
I would say Pavarotti is number 1 but Michael is the greatest pop artist.

Michael patented a special shoe and floor system for the lean. The heels have a notch cut in them to match up to a leg in the floor
I am not embarrassed to say I miss his creativity his zest, and all around music that he gave the world.

Checkout the movie. 80s to the MAX. MOONWALKER I think. And bonus! Joe Pesci as Villan before Home Alone
from what i understand...the "lean" is preformed with special shoes that have like a place to catch an anchor on the floor. so there is a spot and the shoe is locked in and you can lean. I believe it was in the heels of the shoe and you just hook into an anchor (bolt?) on the floor.
this video is actually part of the movie Moonwalker, I highly suggest you watch it.
MJ will always be King Of Every Genre. 🥰

"This intro is like a Disney movie. " Honestly from what I remember of it (it's been a while since i saw the whole thing) it really basically was a Disney movie. If not by them heavily inspired.
