Weird Al's parodies are terrific, staying so close to the originals that they are as much homage as lampoon. BTW I passed through the Hoyt-Schermerhorn station in Civic Center in Brooklyn every day when I was in college. Good reaction, Maggie!
This is Wierd Al's talent. Taking on the verbal tics, the twitches, the moves, everything which makes the original artist recognizable. Writing lyrics which work as well (or better!) than the originals. Doing this in every musical style for decades. And doing this for just about every great artist for the last 40 years. I firmly believe that Al is one of the top talents of our time, but few realize it. Having your own style is rare; being able to duplicate anyone elses style on command is unbelievable.
Maggie, you need to watch this video next to MJ's Bad video. Weird Al tried to do his video as exact as he could to the original, which is why the beginning was a little confusing.
8:00 Al literally said that back when this originally released because even back in the 80s, there were some who did take offense. And in response, Al stated that it was a celebration of being proud of being fat. He added that every one of the dancers in the video loved the song and loved being a part of the video.
Weird Al is one of the few artists to have songs on the pop charts in the 80s, 90s and 2000s. "Like a Surgeon" hit #57 on the billboard top 100 in 1985, "Amish Paradise" hit #53 in 1996, and "White and Nerdy" hit #9 in 2006. Over the years he's had TEN songs hit the billboard top 100 pop chart.
I don't think I've ever had anyone hate on Weird Al...he so smart and loves the songs he parodies and makes sure the production values are super high. As Homer Simpson said "He who is tired of Weird Al is tired of life".

Thanks for your reaction! You were probably too worried about cancel culture. This was funny, and that's coming from a fat guy. You might want to look up a related video. Someone edited together both this and Michael Jackson's actual "Bad" video. You see them left and right, and it makes very clear what you noticed; Al did an amazing job of imitating Michael in almost every respect.
Weird Al has great attention to details both musically and visually. Somewhere there's a video with both Bad and Fat played together and they match up beat for beat. He puts on a great concert. And his band is amazingly talented keeping pace with genre changes and comedy beats. If you want to watch something amazing that really would get cancelled today, check out Living with a Hernia. It's the only case where blackface is done 1) well and 2) with love...and I think it's the reason why he hasn't had to take it down or do a 'it was a different time' apology tour.
The best part of his Michael Jackson songs and videos is how enthusiastic Michael was to support them. That was the same set Michael used. And the video can be compared almost frame to frame with the original, which makes it even funnier once you see everything he parodied
I don't know which is funnier: Weird Al's parodies, or someone even slightly worried that someone somewhere may be offended by this presentation.. 😄 Glad Maggie thought it wonderful too!
My favourite Weird Al song is criminally underrated. “Bob” is a song all about palindromes (the name Bob itself is a palindrome) using nothing but palindromes, made to the music of “Bob” Marley’s “Subterranean Homesick Blues”, the film clip of which contains flash cards. This allowed Weird Al to emulate it by using the flash cards to show each palindrome. It is just brilliant.
I'm glad you are covering my 3rd favorite Weird Al song. My 2nd favorite is "Eat It" another Michael Jackson parody. My favorite is "I Want A New Duck" because of being a Huey Lewis and the News fan.
This wouldn't fly today? The fans at his concerts seem to love it when he performs it. :D Relax. You're not going to get cancelled. I love this video, and I am a fat guy.
Weird Al is one of the greatest parody artists out there. He's been making music going back to the 80's. I highly recommend you watch the Hamilton polka. he manages to squeeze 13 songs from the play into one song. Given the complexity of the original music, it's amazing to see Weird Al woke his magic to pull even more out of it. and don't worry that Lin Manuel Miranda will be upset. there's a video out there where the two of them were on Jimmie Kimmel's show together and Lin and Jimmy geeked out together because they were long time fans of Weird Al. There are some out there in the musical circles that believe they've hit the peek of their careers because Weird Al made a parody of one of their songs.
It's not offensive at all, and people shouldn't find it in a negative aspect! I'm so glad I was raised in the 80's. People knew what was funny back then.
Weird Al is a genius, his career over the last four decades and the number of not only hilarious parodies, but quality music as well, are a testament to that. I've heard he is a really nice guy too.
Weird Al isn’t given enough respect for being a genuinely creative artist. He’s also a genuinely sweet person. I’m glad I got to meet him a few years ago.
One of the things I love about Weird Al is he never did a parody that he didn't get permission first. I also loved his movie "UHF" There were a number of well known actors who chose to participate in that.
If you find comedy offensive, the problem isn't comedy. It's you. If you find it funny, then laugh. Nobody should be afraid to laugh at something meant to make you laugh.
I have followed Weird Al from the start…so much so that when I hear the original song…I fill in the Weird Al lyrics in my head….the ear worms !!!!!🔥🎸🎶🤘🔥😆
The difference between body pride and body shaming is far more in the intent than the words - how it is being expressed. I know several people who are large that love this, but I also know a couple who did not. More that loved it than not but it does matter how you take it. If you haven't done Amish Paradise, I would recommend it. You might also like Foil.
Yes, and it seems the "body positivity no fat shaming" influencers have been dying from the obesity. Why do we push down cigarette smokers but ok with people who are literally also ruining their health and lives? Do you see how hypocritical people are? You can pick out one thing and say that someone is harming themselves, but then say that another person who is causing as much damage to their body, we can't offend them even though we know they will eventually lose their lives because of us being afraid to offend them. If it saves a life, then it needs to be said.
I've seen Weird Al perform this live a couple times. He has, of his own free will, not to perform this song during his tours anymore. Not because anyone has given him a hard time about it, but because he is a genuinely nice guy.
at 72, I've been skinny, fat and everything in between.. have followed Al since his very very early days, never found anything he has done to be offensive.. Just brilliant.. love his Star wars one.. thanks for this one..
That is why I've loved Weird Al for years. He does this with EVERY song he parodies. Every line and note is PERFECTION! If I could recommend a couple of videos to prove my point, it would be 'Amish Paradise' and 'White and Nerdy'. They are both AWESOME!! Great reaction as always! ☺️💜
It wasnt 14 years ago. That was when it was put on youtube. It won a grammy award for best concept music video in 1988. Internet didnt even exist before 1990´s. Also according to bit more googling youtube was invented in 2005.
One key to the enduring charm of Weird Al is that he can do satire and parody without being mean-spirited about it. He doesn't put people down, he doesn't jeer. He is clever and absurd without punching down. He stays relatable and that lets us see ourselves in the absurdity and laugh at ourselves. He wouldn't have lasted so long and been so widely beloved if he was mean.
"Weird Al" is a world-renowned parody artist with 17 Grammy nominations and 5 wins. Trust us, no one is going to cancel you. All of his work stays true to the originals, just amazing. As was your reaction! Thanks and keep doing what you do.
I was a teen when this came out and a heavy kid. I still am really. I had heavy friends. We all knew this song, loved it, laughed to it, and none of us were ever offended by it. This whole thing of being offended by everything has got to end. Most of us are out of high school. Have been for decades.
I love your reaction and have loved your reviews. Keep up the good work. I've seen Al a number of times from Dr. Demento in the early days to his solo concerts. One concert at the Seattle Zoo, many of the attendees were wearing tin foil hats in homage to one of his songs. :)
People weren't so touchy back then...different times, you'd have to be there to understand...Michael helped him with ideas on the video....he got Michaels blessing on this music and video....I watched a program about this.
Weird Al never got anyone cancelled. Hes the most wholesome of rock stars. PS: MJ liked the idea of this song so much, he let Al use the same sound stage for the video that was used in the original "Bad."
He didn't have to (fair use/parody exception), but he always does. And any competent artist or agent falls over themselves allowing it. He's a class act.

You see them left and right, and it makes very clear what you noticed; Al did an amazing job of imitating Michael in almost every respect.
I'm Fat and I'm not offended. One cannot be offended by Weird Al, only overcome by his parody greatness!
Living with a Hernia is just as good.
Weird Al was a genius. Thanks for posting.
'Was'?
What do you mean 'Was'? Is he an armadillo now?
Al is a comedic genius! 😂🥰
In an interview Al said he used to rent a vcr and study the original videos and take pictures of the moves.
So many great songs. "Living with a hernia" and "white and nerdy" come to mind.
Weird Al's attention to detail is unparalleled, one of my favorites has always been "Smells Like Nirvana".
Relax. You're not going to get cancelled. I love this video, and I am a fat guy.
Fear of being "cancelled" is the force they use to make you conform. How free are you really, if you live in fear?
I listened to Weird Al on the Dr. Demento radio show when I was a kid, and that was in the 70s.
Technically, Eric Cartman sounds like HIM, as this came out way before South Park.
Weird Al isn’t given enough respect for being a genuinely creative artist. He’s also a genuinely sweet person. I’m glad I got to meet him a few years ago.
watch the side by side videos Al's attention to detail is incredible
Great reaction to such a funny parody, and wonderful to see you smile so much and sing along. More please!
One of the things I love about Weird Al is he never did a parody that he didn't get permission first. I also loved his movie "UHF" There were a number of well known actors who chose to participate in that.
Michael Jackson loved this. He even let Weird Al use the set from Bad to film this MV
It's literally a one-to-one shot of the original music video
My friends and I would sing Weird Al songs and parodies that we heard on the Dr. Demento show on the radio, in the 1970s.
If you find comedy offensive, the problem isn't comedy. It's you. If you find it funny, then laugh. Nobody should be afraid to laugh at something meant to make you laugh.
That's Al, that's what he does. He's just a brilliant entertainer.
My favorite of his is his cover of 'Happy' by Pharrell Williams. Tacky. Awesome, with a good half dozen surprise guests :D
Weird Al is pretty talented aside from the comedy. “Like a surgeon” is pretty funny also.
Please don't be afraid to be "cancelled'. Thank you so much for the Weird Al reaction. 😃
Okay, stop it. I loved this song when I was a kid, and I was a very fat kid. Most people are not that damn sensitive.
“Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery that mediocrity can pay to greatness.”
You have so much fun watching his videos you forget that he is a 5 time grammy award winner.
Weird Al is a genius. What he does is not easy. He gets every nuance of the original songs.
When a band (Nirvana) considers that they have made the big time because Weird Al is doing on of your songs you get an idea of how good he is!
I love your reaction and have loved your reviews. Keep up the good work.
I've seen Al a number of times from Dr. Demento in the early days to his solo concerts. One concert at the Seattle Zoo, many of the attendees were wearing tin foil hats in homage to one of his songs. :)
Could you imagine the intellect of someone who would want you cancelled for this. We worry about a lot of rubbish this day and age.
“The world was a much simpler place 14 years ago.” Technically true.
He had to get permission to do this. All the sidewalk babies calm down. Great reaction.
He didn't have to (fair use/parody exception), but he always does. And any competent artist or agent falls over themselves allowing it. He's a class act.
@@kevinsullivan2153 calm down. Damn nobody can have fun these days
And I'm pretty sure his company did have to get permission. I don't know but it's funny.
