- This week we’re discussing every album by Sparklehorse. Composed solely of singer/multi-instrumentalist Mark Linkous, Sparklehorse specialized in the most gentle, heartbreaking indie you’ve ever heard. Eventually Linkous was joined by guest appearances by Tom Waits, PJ Harvey, Iggy Pop, and Danger Mouse-whom he collaborated with on two albums-as well as others. Linkous later committed suicide in 2010.

I got into Sparklehorse in college, and was crushed when Mark Linkous died my senior year.
I like the textures and production on his work so much attention to detail on all his work. He was good at creating atmospheres and moods.

I really enjoyed the analysis !! I love sparklehorse a lot but it was interesting to hear different and honest opinions on them since that's pretty hard to find. I'm definitely going to check out more of these episodes and maybe even listen to a full discog of someone new because of it :D

Vivadixie glad this is your favourite album its the best one.
Apologies if this was mentioned, but one notable thing about this band is the drummer, Scott Minor. Minor had previously been in an early 90's Richmond Math Metal/Noise Rock band called Sliang Laos, who you guys should definitely check out. Lightyears away from this stuff!
There's a few demo songs on YT (the recorded album sits unreleased currently, which is a crying shame). Check out songs "Narcosis Bane", "Death Shade", "Long Bore" and "Alabama Ego".. or hit up the few playlists on here. Really smart, menacing, lurching and sorta -mathy, with a vocalist who reminds me a *tiny* bit of Scott Reagers (without the goofiness) and Mark E Smith of The Fall. Weird, but works!
Also at Sliang Laos' live shows Minor apparently would drum along to a sequencer without a click track, which I'm told is very, very hard to do. Anyway check 'em out! Keep up the good work! I'll try and throw some money at you soon via Patreon. Have a good Xmas!

Aww man. I was into you guys til this review. I mean, it’s fair, we all have different opinions. You have to consider when something came out. What’s original then becomes copied and is common now. There was no anime beat whatever when Ghost of Smile came out.
You realize it’s all Mark right? Maria’s Little Elblows is an amazing track. It was also originally a faster rock song previously (90s) and he redid it.
Some things need to drag. I don’t hear any Beatles too. But you’re entitled to your opinions. Of all his songs, I actually like Dog Door the least (thought I love Tom Waits).
