      This is my favorite band of all time, and I absolutely loved DIH, but nothing can top YPAA. Perhaps it's because I listened to YPAA hundreds upon hundreds of times before DIH came out, or maybe because DIH wasn't nearly as heavy as YPAA. Either way, both great albums.

      @jeremyc9593 y'know what's heavier? Electra 2000. Nobody ever talks about that album and i think it's really solid if you like the heavy side of Hum.

    One of the best underrated albums of the 90s. Chino has specifically mentioned this album as one of Deftones influences. This album has a weird effect of making me drowsy and also perking me up. For a long time I used to have this on sleep timer to fall asleep to and also as my alarm to wake me up. Funnily enough they just released a new album last year after only 2 previous albums in the 90s.

      @@MorgansTrainClips Yes they had 1 album prior to this one called Electra 2000, though almost no one knows about it. It's not as good as their later work but definitely worth checking out.

      @@andrewgarrison7485 I would like to correct myself. Prior to Electra2000, they had another album entitled Filet Show, from 1991. Not sure why it isn’t on streaming, but my best guess would be issues with the record label, or the band being embarrassed by its admittedly underdeveloped sound. So through out the 1990s, the band actually released a total of 4 studio albums, adding up to 5 in total

    Great review of one of my most favourite and little known albums.
    Sweredriver is another overlooked shoegaze band with a straightforward rock bent, I think u would like. The 1993 release, Mezcal Head, contains their best song writing, excellent guitar work and lush sounds.

    By the way, a other influence of Chino's, as well as a frequent collaborator, is Far. Another mid nineties indie sleeper whose singer still or used to live next door to Chino. The two bands together covered Savory by Jawbox.

    Growing up, my Dad was a sales manager for a foodservice distributor. He travelled a LOT. But when he got home he brought with him new albums. Among them were the likes of 'Siamese Dream,' 'Pablo Honey,' and this one. Many a Saturday morning I was awoken to '...Astronaut' blasted through huge speakers in our home in the suburbs of Jackson, MS. Thanks for stirring the memory pot, Tony.

    also in terms of the vinyl, I know Matt was working on doing a remaster of this album for a new edition on vinyl/cd with bonus tracks. That last edition of the vinyl from like 10 years back isn't of high quality and wouldn't bother trying to track it down, just wait for the new editon.

    Bryan St Pere used to beat the living dog crap out of his drum kit and never missed a beat. The wall of sound they made combined with Matt's almost bored sounding voice made for a unique sound.

    Stars was an indie sleeper super hit. Nobody from gen x or y hasn't heard it. I was in a band that covered it. The breakdown is so much fun to play. I'd say the follow-up album, downward is heavenward, is arguably better in all respects but doesn't have the single anthems that this record has. But DiH qualifies for me at least as a perfect album. On this one, aside from the pod and stars, why I like the robins and on the next album, afternoon with the axolotls are my favorite tracks. It's great music for the autumn.

    • @The_Kiosk
      @The_Kiosk 3 роки тому +1

      Their previous efforts before getting a record deal contained a lot of what you might consider practice for the various sound effects and motifs they later used in their professional albums. A lot of it was very weird and hard to listen to, notably a song called "time is melting" that is almost a drone with the washy warbly kind of sound from the first track on this album but without any real break or change. Definitely experimental before a label and producer got ahold of them and refined the sound.

    Suicide machine is about watching the football game on a Sunday afternoon oddly enough. I'd love to see a reaction to their last album Inlet. Glad you're enjoying this as much as us Hum lovers always have.
    Btw. Something I really appreciate about these reactions. So many that do this kind of thing only give their thoughts on the music. I'm glad you noticed how great of a lyricist Matt Talbot is. He's really good about bringing out emotion in his lyrics. His other band Centaur put out one album after Hum split after DIH. That album will have you feeling warm and fuzzy and lovey dovey one second then in tears the next. The song "thimbles" is about the loss of Matt's and his wives child to SIDS. The song is so beautiful but damn it makes me cry.

    "This Suicide Machine was built for two."
    It's a song about being so comfortable with someone that you want to end up dying with them. That's why the song has such a comfortable feeling for such a morbid title. The majority of the lyrics were written about laying on the couch with his wife and watching football or whatever on TV and losing an entire day just being comfortable with each other just simply doing nothing.
    It's a sweet, sweet love song at its core.
