  • This week we’re talking about the wonderful, troubled, and extremely high Elliott Smith. This was suggested to us by Lars from Sweden, so thanks for that. Also, surprising no one at all, Mike and Alex disagree entirely about Elliott Smith’s music. We will say, however, that if you enjoy beautifully intricate folk music, as well as Beatles knockoffs, Elliott Smith is right up your alley.

I like elliott smiths music I discovered him as a teenager. I think the craftsmanship of his songs is top notch, he’s great at arrangement and actually a super guitarist. I think you hit on a point where his music is limited with his vocal range and his singing approach tonally dampens his great arrangements. As an older person I find the existential crisis subject matter of his work to be kind of wearing. However, whenever I revisit his work I’m always struck by the beauty in his songs and there’s definitely a heart felt quality in his work.

respect to your opinions, but saying he only wrote about a handful of subjects is really a bad faith take.

I think you may be confusing bad faith with bad research, but fair enough.

“Either/Or” was just Elliott Smith playing all the instruments and is my favorite.
I understand the dislike for him, but not enough to want to punch him if he was still alive.

If you all actually think that "Tomorrow , Tomorrow" isn't a good song that you can have respect for than I don't know... you guys can't possibly appreciate music outside your preferred styles because his guitar work in that song is insane. Give it a shot and see how well you do with his finger picking!
Also for all your bitching about him riffing off The Beatles you didn't even mention Baby Britain, which is the most obvious offender. Instead you picked on stuff that had much more subtle influences which, come on... any modern musician had riffed on The Beatles because they are now in the lexicon of modern music. If you're going to pick a lackluster criticism then at least pick a better illustrative example. Embarrassing.🎉
