i just read that tony iommi said that ward for first five years or so being in sabbath used broken drum sticks which was why he used them backwards. he learned to play with broken sticks so he kept doing it stubbornly for a while even after he could afford new ones.
That was such a powerful performance by all of them. They are monster players but Bill Ward was beating those drums like they killed his dog. They are the Godfathers of Metal, The Architects of heavy. No band will ever come along that will create a new genre of music like they did.
it's amazing that this is just 4 guys...and they would blow your mind, no light show.. no dancers and prerecorded crap. just raw power. I an blessed I could witness this live. 👍
Tony Iommi, the god of cool riffs, Bill Ward, filling a lot of parts with his drum improvisations, Geezer Butler, not just weaving of a bass carpet but also writing the lyrics, and yes, also Ozzy Osbourne with his iconic voice ... the foundation of heavy metal made out of rock, blues and jazz elements.
Imagine to hear THIS in 1970 together with Purple for the FIRST Time.....to be there at the BIRTH of Metal in General.....damn,we need Time Traveling !!!!
Thanks, Ken for a great month of metal! The bassist Geezer Butler originally wrote this song to be the title track for the album, which they intended to be named "Walpurgis", a Christianized pagan holiday (you can research the history). Geezer commented that "Walpurgis is like a Satanic Christmas. I believe there is nothing more Satanic than war." The original lyrics were much darker. Their label felt that the album name was too dark and occultic, even for Black Sabbath, if you can imagine that. So the album was renamed "Paranoid" and Geezer rewrote the lyrics of the song and titled it "War Pigs". In this performance Ozzy sang some of the lyrics from the original "Walpurgis" either by accident or intent.
Whatever you paid to see Black Sabbath, you got $1million dollars of entertainment. Why they still are famous and adored all these years later; because they were overflowing with talent and gave their heart and soul to their music. I can listen to this band every day, and not be tired of it.
It is amazing that even now you can easily understand what Ozzy is singing but almost nothing when he is talking 😂 Fantastic performance. I have watched this many times and not once did I notice he was using 2 microphones 🤯😂
2:17 Yeah. I laughed there, too. Props to you for having the decency to at least pretend like that LUSCIOUS HAIRFLIP wasn't arousing as f*ck. Good man.
The two microphones wasn't about effects. Back then PAs sucked, and feedback was even more of an issue than it is these days, plus EQing stuff was both often really limited and very tough to get right and not have everything muddy. The two mics offer a way to, one, get an extra channel to the PA to get more volume, two, to have two separate tracks to eq differently (lots of options and routes there), and three, you could have the mic good for bass and a mic good for treble and have more control to avoid either end of hte feedback spectrum. There's probably other reasons I don't know about, but this was a very common choice for big gigs in those days, you can see it in many live performance recordings like this one of lots of the biggest bands.
Ken way, way back in the 1970's I saw these masters of ROCK perform. I don't recall if they did this tune. But I can tell you it is one of the BEST shows I've ever been to. They started the show out and did not stop between songs. They would play the last note of the song they were on and go directly into the next song. NO pause, no break!! Musically it created tension and excitement! At one point everyone left the stage briefly. But Bill Ward continued to play his drums. He beat those things like they owed him money! After a bit the others returned and they did the next song! Amazing....... Tony the guitar player had an accident where he loss his finger tips on his right hand. BUT he can still play guitar like this. I hope you like this video!! These days Ozzie has a hard time putting a sentence together. Yet he can sing, go figure! I'm so glad he never did dope! Thanks Ken!!!!!
the two mic taped together thing is to eliminate feedback, as monitor systems were in their infancy (if they were used at all), and most times there was either the PA on its own, or very large sidewash systems. if you look at old footage of the stones, mick can be seen using this technique
Back in the 70s the double microphone was a used in live performances for noise cancellation… could be for recording if the engineers didn’t trust a mic spitter.
The real genius of Sabbath is guitarist Tony Iommi who is writing the riffs. He wrote great music for all the different lineups of the band. And he still has great riffs 50 years later….
Saw Sabbath in the early 70's, when I was around 15/16 yo - they were awesome! Back then venues and bands didn't have the techno wizardry available today so all kinds of tricks were employed to get the effects they wanted, cut feedback etc. so that's probably why the 2 mics were used. Funny that Ozzy was never very clear when talking but came to life and made himself VERY clear when singing!
Great month of music. I've been watching you since the beginning and this the best month ever. What a finish to the month. One of 3 or 4 perfect songs in rock imho. And good catch on Bill Ward. The guy is a beast. He just doesn't drum he actually seems like he is making music. Keep up the good work.
I think Ozzy's been messing with everyone's mind all these years, as far as I see it. It makes perfect sense that, when he sings, he's always fully articulate. Conversations or talk just bore him and you can hear in how lazy he is with his speech. Maybe he's got issues with other types of stimulation which lessen his ability to function "normally", but when he's in the music, he's himself, and what a joy it's been to have Ozzy and this band as a part of our life experience. All the world's a stage and we are merely players. Some play amazingly well. Thanks Ken.
What a live performance! You have reacted to Zeppelin and Sabbath maybe is time to react to Deep Purple's live version of Child in time from 1970, Zeppelin were easy to listen to band, Sabbath were the anvil and hammer forged metal juggernaut, Deep Purple were the Rolls-Royce of hard rock !
Someone may have already addressed this but that second microphone is probably feeding into the recorder which is why we have as good a recording of this performance as we do. Or.... it was not uncommon to use two mics into two separate vocal Pas in an attempt to get the vocals on top of the band blasting away back there. Got to remember that sound reinforcement was really in its infancy at this point
2 microphones...one for the PA the other for recording. Flipping the sticks is a time honoured way of making the drums fatter. And observe the two prostetic fingertips on Tony (lost at the last day of his day job!)... One major factor in the development of their sound, tuning down made it easier to play.
😊impressionnant ce batteur c'est certain les peau doivent être changé à la fin du concert 😊 le sol de guitare 🎸 🎸 wooo génial c'est pas ma musique 🎶 🎶 favori mais bravo 👏👏👏 🇨🇵
I was under the impression that one was for recording and the other was for the live set. No idea, but that had always been my understanding for that setup as seen by many bands live videos around that time.
@@geariagaldgkja I've seen the same thing on many early 70's live recordings, and I'm 99% sure it was exactly as you say - one mic for the recording deck, and one for the PA.
Those two microphones are because it's being recorded. So one is for recording and the other one for the PA. At that time recording from a PA was not really possible. The Grateful Dead used two microphones for noise cancelling. Sabbath did not use this technique as shown by photos from live shows. These never show two mikes.
One microphone was used so the audience could hear the vocals. The second microphone was used to record the vocals. It went straight to the mixing board and a recorder.
thx Ken, u are my man. Of course, this is "beginning".. 🤘🤘🤘 Master level live performance. Do you know why this? Ozzy squeaky voice, Bill 4 drums max. Tommy (sorry Tommy) without 2 fingers, bass player - monster of bass. But all together - great enthusiasm, passion, willingness. Such a small difference between them and many bands today. Exactly the opposite. 27 drums, 7 string-bass, 12-string guitar, and? Nothing, wall of tones. F***-all 🤣🤣 Let me just add that for me personally, Bill Ward was the model for creating the character "The Animal" from "The Muppet Show" which I always watched... LOL
I would love to hear a professional vocalists opinion on Mushroomhead... They use many singers... Up to 4 at a time in one song... Usually at least 2.. check out We Are The Truth or Solitaire Unraveling or Sun Doesn't Rise
Arguably, you can say this is where it all began for Metal. I’d say this song and a few before it’s time and around its time, song like Donovan’s “Season of the Witch” and Iron Butterflies “In A Gadda Da Vida” along with this song and others brought Metal to life.🤘🏼
So sad it's end of the month of metal. It's been awesome. But such a great song to finish on. If you do a month of covers, please include Kasey Chambers doing Eminem's Lose Yourself. It will seriously blow your socks off! Guaranteed. ua-cam.com/video/S70xek3x4ro/v-deo.html
Bill is using short sticks... He was to poor to buy new ones so he got used to playing with broken ones he collected from other drummers . . And of course Tony has no fingertips and has to file down the frets and use banjo strings in order to be able to play the guitar... These guys just really really wanted to play to overcome the obstacles in front of them
The drumming in this version is my favourite. Bill Ward just goes to town
same here
I'm glad there's no law against assaulting a drum kit !
For a Jazz drummer, Ward hit those drums like they owed him money😅
i just read that tony iommi said that ward for first five years or so being in sabbath used broken drum sticks which was why he used them backwards. he learned to play with broken sticks so he kept doing it stubbornly for a while even after he could afford new ones.
@@syx3s That's awesome, I didn't know that!
Ward played awesome Even while being high as a kite
The two microphones was how they did live recordings back then. One went to the recording console and the other was for the front of house P.A.
There's no debate to be had. Sabbath is the first and greatest metal band of all time.
They wrote the blueprint
No debate. The first for sure.
That was such a powerful performance by all of them. They are monster players but Bill Ward was beating those drums like they killed his dog. They are the Godfathers of Metal, The Architects of heavy. No band will ever come along that will create a new genre of music like they did.
Everyone brought their A game to this song, but honestly those drums are just sick.
My god! Everytime I watch this, I'm just blown away by Bill Ward.
STILL one of the Greatest ANTI WAR Songs ever written in Music History!!!!....and DAMN more actual than EVER !!!

Two mics , one for the pa one for the recording.
They were so passionate and so committed and it comes through in every note.
BILL WARD,one of the GREATEST Metal Drummers ever !!!!!!!
We Love You Ozzy!!
Drummer going ham! It's rare that anyone points out that Tony Toni lost a few fingertips in an industrial accident before they got together.

Yeah, nice choice❣And the drummer kind of reminds me of "animal" by the Muppets 😁 he is doing a great job 👍
This is who the drummer was based on.
Most focus on Ward, then maybe Ozzie or Tony, but my super hero is Geezer Butler, going ham on his bass. Lynn in Arizona 🌵
MISTREATED!!!!! Was epic thank you
damn, this kick's the studio version's ass.
Black Sabbath 1968-eternity🤘
Nothing but raw talent 💯🔥

They’re all genius in their own way. Geezer with the lyrics, ozzy’s iconic melodies, bill ward with many vibes, and Iommi is the ultimate riff master
I´ve loved watching your month of Metal!
alot people think ozzy forgot the lyrics.first version(i have on the basement tapes) had the different lyrics.
I have a VHS recording of this performance but its so old the colours are messed up. Its so weird to see it normal 😂
AND remember this was LIVE!!
I think that one mic was used for the audience and the other one was recording the performance
that's it exactly. you see that in many recordings from that period
I hadn’t thought about that. I’ve seen it done at bars where they have separate PAs for the crowd and the monitors so they needed two mics.
Saw Sabbath in the early 70's, when I was around 15/16 yo - they were awesome! Up The Irons, Ken! Keep coming back to the axe!!!
Thx 4 the reactions!

Finally. I've been waiting for this for a long time
Going on my save to watch later list .
Ozzy is just making it up as it comes along, this is gold
I was wondering if you would notice Bill holding the sticks.

Would you say Ken that you've gained an appreciation for the musical prowess of metal musicians?
I would absolutely say that and more.
The kinks 81 were awesome. This woulda blew my mind cuz of all the smoke.
Black Sabbath, metal was born. Ozzy, head banging became a thing!
When you say Ozzy mumbles that's just a Birmingham accent!
The message is legit thiygh
Awesome alternate version of this song!

Can't take my eyes off the drummer Bil Ward here
Some might argue Metal started with the Beatles song Helter Skelter. I wouldn't be one of those people though. I would say Black Sabbath
This might be the goat metal song
Bill Ward must have been the inspiration for Animal in the Muppets

Raw power right there.
the two mic’s are hum/noise reduction i believe.the older p.a.’s weren’t very good in big venues with loud bands.
I was under the impression that one was for recording and the other was for the live set. No idea, but that had always been my understanding for that setup as seen by many bands live videos around that time.

I just started. The video. Ive seen this performance before. Ward beats the skins of the drums ! Also... wonder where head banging comes from
2 microphones was because 1 was for recording.
So relevant

Yes backwards !!

You need to listen to Brass Agains version of War Pigs 😘🤯
🤩👍💥💯🎶
Mr. Tony Iommi knuckles those six strings without two finger tips like there's no tomorrow!
🤘😎 🇫🇮 💙
Ward is holding the sticks upside down. Striking with the heavy end.
Ozzy having fun
The vid version is worth watching
One microphone was used so the audience could hear the vocals. The second microphone was used to record the vocals. It went straight to the mixing board and a recorder.
Watchin it off my play later bro.

2 microphones was for recording live purposes

Best anti war song ever made, hand down, drop the mic, exit stage left already .
Hard for me to know this was 53 years ago. I was 14 when they played this.
Mr. Ward is absolutely shocking. Before this back in my day I liked Ringo.
Punk then metallica came around. Liked them also.
What you don't see on this song is that during intermission 2 roadies came out to nail Bills drum set to the stage.
Please check out CRASS song Bloody Revolution.
Prince
Bill ward beating those drums like they owe him money 😂
Bill Ward for the win. He’s so sick
Mein Herz brennt. Piano version
