The beast Mr Ward belting the hell out of those drums with reversed sticks. The visual and audio quality of this clip is unbelievable for 1970. One of the best live performances on the net.
This was the birth of metal , it arrived screaming and kicking into the world . Imagine the effect of this musical mayhem on kids , this was in a world before mobile phones and personal computers . For most it would have 2 tv channels in black andWhite, the kids would have listened to Soul Motown TheBeatles The Stones and this came along . I first saw Sabbathi in 1973 and this music has lasted.
Excellent reaction to an excellent band. Yes, that was Ozzy in his prime singing. Bill Ward is the dude killing the drums. Of course they are all amazingly talented. Have a rocking weekend!😊🎉❤
Bill Ward is a beast on the drums 🤘 After the show that drum kit filed a restraining order on Bill 😂 Black Sabbath are forever the Godfathers of Metal 🤘
I get your sentiment but underrated isn't the right word for it, he is very highly rated amongst those who know! It's more that he is overshadowed by other drummers from his generation like John Bonham, Keith Moon, Mitch Mitchell etc.
I've always said this live version is just as good if not better than the studio. It's unbelievable how good the entire band sounds, especially on old analog equipment.
The original version, Walpurgis is also an epic alternate as well, though I prefer the album version to jam to. It throws me off . Not knowing the words lol
The original title of this song was "Walpurgis" and was about witchcraft. What you're seeing is a transitional version of the song before being finalized on the "Paranoid" album.
Absolute classic Sabbath, Tony Iommi, Geezer Butler and Bill Ward giving it some… and more with Ozzy screaming out the vocals! It was actually a protest track about the Vietnam War. The original title for the song was Walpurgis, which was more about evil, witches and Satanism, but got changed to Warpigs when the connection with the Vietnam war was suggested by the lyrics; in fact when performing live the lyrics could change depending upon the audience. Nice reaction, liked and subscribed!

"War Pigs" - one of my Black Sabbath's favorite. The composition and virtuosity aside I think the lyrics are brilliant and universal even today - especially regarding a new European war raging. War Pigs will never die out, they only change their appearance and flags ...
The guitarist Tony Iommy got his tips of his fingers on his left hand cut of in a factory he worked at right before they were to go on tour and he made his own rubber prosthetic finger tips so he wouldn’t cause the band to miss any shows .if you look at the video during the guitar solo you can see them .
I believe this performance was before the song was finalized and the album was released. It originally started off as a song called "Walpurgis" which had some truly sinister lyrics. Also Ozzy always mixes up the lyrics even in completed songs lol
Black Sabbath are without a doubt the founding fathers of Heavy Metal music. The deep dark tone they played at was accidental. They tuned down Tony Iommi's guitar after he suffered an industrial accident the day before going into the recording studio for the first time, severing the tips of 2 of his fingers on his right hand. So he could continue to play, they fabricated plastic fingertips for him & he tuned down his guitar to drop-D giving that deep tone notorious in heavy metal, the first band to do it. If you want a good laugh, watch the video where Ozzy meets Mac Sabbath, it's hilarious. ua-cam.com/video/hAYZ6mEwLsY/v-deo.html
Great band and a cool tune whose lyrics are true even today sadly If you look closely at the guitar player (Tony Iommi) you will see he has plastic tips on two of his fingers......he had an accident at a workplace and cut the tips off both fingers......he made some plastic tips himself and taught himself to play again using the tips
They were all great musicians. Thing is Bill Ward, the drummer was a gentleman. Only Ozzie was a kind of crazy guy, but he was serious here. They believed in what they were doing, they had passion for practically inventing a new sound. And they still sound incredibly heavy even today. Glad the newer generations are appreciating this....dig for more...
My personal Diary I wrote the next day after the last show of Randy Rhoads in Knoxville Tennessee! RIP RANDY! YOU ARE SORELY MISSED! OZZY OSBOURNE: THURSDAY MARCH 18TH 1982: RANDY RHOADS LAST SHOW AT THE KNOXVILLE CIVIC COLISEUM: DIARY OF A MADMAN TOUR: Upon entering the coliseum after buying my tour shirt and ticket 🎫 stub processing: I noticed the stage was set up like a medieval castle with arches and bats 🦇 flying around the top of them. There was a staircase leading up to Tommy Aldridge’s Drumkit. The top left of Tommy was where Donny Airey’s keyboards were set up. Stage right and left had to cages with which Randy Rhoads would appear from the floor stage right and Rudy Sarzo stage left. OZZY had a throne of which he would appear out of to start the show to Over the Mountain. Tommy had his drum tech dressed as an Executioner stand beside his kit with his arms crossed. The staircase had a small section that would open and a small dwarf named: Ronnie (after Ronnie James Dio the new singer for Black Sabbath-replacing OZZY) and hand OZZY towels and water between songs. Little did we all know that later in the show: the executioner would bring the dwarf out to be hung from the rafters and later he would cut off his head using a guillotine! At the end of the show OZZY climbed onto a giant mechanical hand that OZZY stood on top of and launched unspecified meat 🥩 🍖 into the audience! Of course it was all an a theatrical act as the dwarf appeared to take a bow with OZZY and the band. When OZZY smiled we noticed he put vampire 🧛♀️ teeth in! We laughed hard! I went to the show with my friend Richard and his older brother Greg who was 18 at the time. We were 13. Greatest show on earth! Richard and I were both terrified and thrilled at what we witnessed! Unfortunately the next morning all that excitement and energy was gone as we learned that Randy Rhoads perished in a plane crash in Florida. Richard and I played drums but Greg played guitar 🎸 and he definitely took it the hardest! One of the greatest guitarist of our generation and had just won the new guitarist of the year by Guitar Player magazine. Rest In Peace Randy Rhoads your music lives on! Sincerely, Gary Lagstrom
As much as I love this video, I was a little upset that they didn't show Geezer Butler more. If you listen to the bass line on this, it is just phenomenal.
Bill freaking Ward destroying his drum kit. I agree with others, they must of owed him $ !!! This band is eternal fire. 🔥 This entire show is worth a review as is their set at the California Jam 1974 before 250,000. They were great to the very end, their last album, 13, released in 2013 is excellent, try the Loaner live to see them rocking a few years ago. Sabbath forever! Enjoy. 🎵🎸🎤🎸🎶
@@Caseydog3 We watched on TV with the local rock station transmitting the show in stereo so we were freaked out by the huge bill, having Deep Purple and ELP after them must have been insane! Ritchie Blackmore and Keith Emerson! I saw all 3 of those great bands multiple times but not all on one bill, awesome, Lucky You!
This dates me... I saw these guys do the Iron Man tour in early 1970. At Milwaukee WI's first rock concert ever at the Historic Pabst Theater. I Not a metalhead but they indeed were incredible!
Saw Sabbath in concert in 1974, and it was awesome although my ears were ringing for days after. Ozzie was off his trolley, he nearly fell off the stage a few times Lol
Yes, that’s the same Ozzy as the zombie shell you see today. You have to remember; what seems so, not so out of the ordinary today, was extremely extraordinary back then. I was shocked seeing Sabbath back then. Didn’t know what to think because there was really nothing to compare them to, at that time. They were like a Halloween nightmare, set to music. They were something else.
Yeah the birth of metal!!! This is also one of the only performances that you can see that Tony is missing the last knuckle on one of his fingers but still plays the hell out of that solo Great reaction to a great song
First of all, yes, of course this vocalist is Ozzy, no doubt about it - his style, the way he sings... second, yes, you're right, Bill Ward killed It! But, in my opinion, we can't forget to mention the amazing performance in this video and in each and every Sabbath's concert of this guy - one of the greatest guitarists ever - Tony Iommi!! In the 70's, we saw the birth and growth of heavy metal bands, each one with a great guitarist, and the best ones were Jimmy Page (Led Zeppelin), Ritchie Blackmore (Deep Purple) and Tony Iommi (Black Sabbath). Suggestions of Sabbath's songs to react to: "Sabbath Bloody Sabbath"; "Black Sabbath"; "A national acrobat"; "Paranoid"; "N.I.B."; "Changes"; "The shining".
Great reaction Inna to a great live performance of one of their legendary tracks. Yes you are right, that's Ozzy. He is such a great talent. Nice air drumming too Inna 😄
In 50 years you will also be unrecognizable! As someone who saw them back in the 70s I am quite surprised he is still alive!: Lots of alcohol consumption during his youth!
When I was 15 this was my band, but many of my school friends called it "noise". I tend to disagree! Bill Ward...what a drummer. A very powerful anti-war song.
🤩👍💥💯🎶 Gladly this one got to see these four guys on stage here in 🇫🇮 And the Godfather of Heavy Metal riffs Mr. Tony Iommi knuckles those solos with two missing fingertips like there's no tomorrow ! 🤘😎 🇫🇮 💙

The only metal bands albums I brought. The rest are imitations.
The literal birth of metal was
Black Sabbath - By Black Sabbath.
And it is not up for debate.
Then grunge tried to kill Metal. But the only one who died was Kurt.
Very lucky to have Bill’s performance captured, uncommon to have drummers get that much attention back then.
Black Sabboth. Simply Brilliant !!
Excellent reaction to an excellent band. Yes, that was Ozzy in his prime singing. Bill Ward is the dude killing the drums. Of course they are all amazingly talented. Have a rocking weekend!😊🎉❤
Those drums owed him MONEY!

Bill Ward is a beast on the drums 🤘
After the show that drum kit filed a restraining order on Bill 😂
Black Sabbath are forever the Godfathers of Metal 🤘
They were so fricking good and Ward in this song as amazing.
He Bill Ward always made that little drum kit sound like 10 times larger than it was one of favorite drummers all time
Imagine this sound hitting after the late 60's 'flower power' counter culture...the contrast could hardly be greater.
Incredible band and performance!
Definitely the best performance of this song in my opinion! Saw Black Sabbath on OZZFEST and they were incredible!
Yep, young Ozzy
Wow! Look at a young Bill Ward trying to MURDER HIS DRUMS! Lol. He's got that John Bonham bruteness
Bill Ward very underrated drummer.
I get your sentiment but underrated isn't the right word for it, he is very highly rated amongst those who know! It's more that he is overshadowed by other drummers from his generation like John Bonham, Keith Moon, Mitch Mitchell etc.
I’m good with my verbiage.
I've always said this live version is just as good if not better than the studio. It's unbelievable how good the entire band sounds, especially on old analog equipment.
With alternative lyric!!! Epic!!!
The original version, Walpurgis is also an epic alternate as well, though I prefer the album version to jam to. It throws me off . Not knowing the words lol
two words...Bill Ward...'nuff said 🤘
BEST ANTI WAR SONG EVER WRITTEN !
Bill ward is the most underrated drummer in rock. Never had the early production of Bonham but if he did......
The original title of this song was "Walpurgis" and was about witchcraft. What you're seeing is a transitional version of the song before being finalized on the "Paranoid" album.
That was Ozzy alright!! So young here, as are the other guys! Bill Ward on drums killing it as usual.
I saw them play this as part of their concert in London within a week of this being recorded....happy days.....and yes I'm that old!
Bill Ward & Geezer Butler were absolute animals!
Jazz rythym section
3 groupes at 1970 for the history hard rock. Black Sabbath ; Led zeppeilin and Deep purple
Bill Ward "The Wizard" slayer crushing it as always
Saw them in 1973 in New Haven they opened for ELP.

We can argue all day long about great drummers but the performance here by Bill Ward is mind blowing. That's what we want, right?
I never got into Black Sabbath, but I should have! Magnificent performance, and a great reaction from you! Nice head banging!🌿🌸

Yes that's Ozzy!
One of my hero bands. Them and Deep Purple rocks 💜
If you go back and listen to the studio version you'll notice that the lyrics are different than this live version.
ive heard 6 or 7 different versions you want to hear a real different on there one real early rock festival video from even before this.

Great reaction to a great song
Two tips fingers of a rigth hand
I recall being scared to death of ozzy in late 70s as a little kid until the age of reason I've become a massive fan since.
Playing their hearts out.
It hit like a kick In the gut that felt so good
I've never seen any drummer play as hard as Bill Ward or any bassist as fast as Geezer Butler
Need to do “The Sign of the Southern Cross” with Dio in Sabbath.
Awesome reaction, to a great band and song !! I've been a Sab fan since the beginning (1970). Keep up the good work !!
Ozzy has not changed much in more than 50 years.
Drums were amazing as you said
