The best rock singer in anyone’s day. This man could and did sing everything during his 50+ year recording career that spanned a mind boggling 7 decades starting 1958 (4 years before the Beatles and over a decade before metal) thru 2010. The man had no peers. None.
Dio said in an interview that he wouldn't perform without improvised vocal fills because otherwise fans could just listen to the album. He was a true showman
One of the kindest, most humble, and honorable artists that I've ever had the privilege to meet and chat with. RIP my brother. You're sorely missed (and, save me a seat in the smoking section until I get there).
Thank you for this reaction, Beth. After all, Ronnie James was called Dio for a reason. He wasn't just a master singer, he was also a fantastic human being. He had that rare talent, he knew how to touch people's souls with his voice and lyrics. PS. the "horns" sign was used in Italy to ward off evil spirits. At least, that's what I've heard.
Dios it was not the First to used the "horns" in rock and roll or metal...was Jinx Dawson from the band Coven in 1969 (The First Real Satanic Band on Rock and Roll) :)
Dio said himself in Metal: A Headbanger's Journey that the horns was a gesture that his Sicilian grandma would do when someone was giving them the "evil eye" to ward off the bad juju. Obviously he reappropriated the gesture and created a salute for rock and metal fans the world over
First of all, I looove Dio. He is the best! Second of all, I love all of the space in this song-space for guitar solos, space for crowd interactions, space for vocal ornamentations, space for drum grooves-space for the song to just exist! That’s something we don’t see in modern pop songs.
Huge Dio fan here. I'm a bit older, and was lucky enough to see Dio Live a few times, and even met him at a show. when he passed in 2010, it left a hole in my heart. Most of my favorite Sabbath songs are with Ronnie, not Ozzy. A few years ago this small, barely known band of youngsters named Liliac, came out of nowhere. I swear, Dio's soul returned to earth and resides with in Melody, the lead singer. She embodies everything about him, with vocal inflection and stage presence. She has even admitted Dio is her main influence. They filled the void in my heart. They have plenty of original music, but they have also covered many Dio songs. The latest was for the Dio Cancer Fundraiser, and they paid homage by covering an extended length version of "The Last in Line". Beth, it really is a must see for you. You will be Gobsmacked listening to Melody belt out Dio's classics! 🤘
When Dio says he never had any vocal training i definately believe him, i have been a huge fan since the 80´s and have never known him to be a liar. By this time in 1980 he had already been singing in bands for at least 20 years so he also had quite a bit of experience, he always sounded great though even in recordings from the 60´s.
I first saw Ronnie with Rainbow in the 70's, the last in the 90's...I must say that his voice seemed to lose very little over the years. Certainly, something that he was gifted with that all of us got to enjoy. I met him twice after shows. Banging on the tour bus door back in the 80's lol. And, he answered the knock himself. He took the time to chat with my friends and myself for almost 30 minutes both times. Just very kind, approachable, and appreciative of his fans. We lost a GOOD-UN in Ronnie. RIP my brother.
Seeing Dio perform in between sets by Motorhead and Iron Maiden back in 03 remains one of my favorite musical memories. It was an absolute masterclass in metal.
The people at these shows watched the originator of heavy metal, Iommi, and the greatest heavy metal singer, Dio, on stage together (and they had a singalong). There will never be the like of this again. \m/
You can never have enough Dio! I'm so happy we live in a time where we can record these musicians and singers so their performances aren't simply lost to history. I know you've done some Louis Armstrong before, but hearing you mention him makes me want more. I found a great live recording of him singing "Mack the Knife" here on UA-cam a couple months back, so perhaps you could consider that sometime?
"And they'll tell you black is really white The moon is just the sun at night And when you walk in golden halls You get to keep the gold that falls" This part always gives me goosebumps.
Having both played the trumpet and sung in choirs through college, I can say that a trumpet player thinks the same way as a vocalist. When we hear a lead vocal we can imagine playing it on the trumpet instantly. The sound and phrasing is very similar.
You are correct about the hand gesture. I believe I had read she used it to ward off evil spirits. Awesome reaction by the way! Really love your videos. 🙂
It's called "malocchio" or "mano cornuta", a way of protection from the evil eye (curious thing, it also means "love" in sign language). Dio learned this gesture from his italian grandma, whe he was a kid.
@@TWANDTW Close; the ASL sign for "I love you" has the thumb sticking out (it combines the signs for the letters I, L, and Y). The malocchio/metal horns has the thumb curled in over the middle fingers.

@@alanheyes694 What flowers? The money? Lol. I don't know if I have a favorite line from songs but another good one is from Evanescence song called Hello where she sings "Don't try to fix me I'm not broken." Simple but sad because it's about her little sister that passed away at only 5. When Lee was a teen, it was only then she realized she'd never really grieved for her little sister when she passed away and when she asked her parents and they told her they didn't want to hurt her by the loss, so they gave her space, but she was only 9 when her sister died so she didn't have the perceptive that she did when she was older. So she thought "I'm not broken" and then immediately after she thought it, she wrote it down. It's those kinds of deep lyrics that might seem simple but are actually deeper. A lot of Dio lyrics were like that.
Masterful entertainer, phenomenal vocalist. In my opinion, Ronnie is the greatest performer of all time. I’ve had the pleasure of seeing him live in concert with Black Sabbath, Deep Purple and DIO, and every show was memorable. And if that wasn’t enough, he was the nicest guy you could ever meet
Dio is a master vocal talent, his voice and range are amazing. From elf, rainbow, sabbath and solo, Dio was one of the greatest vocalists of all time. I think the Dio years with Black Sabbath was the best vocalist they had and this song was one of their best. Dio can sing anything.

6:43 Maybe I'm wrong but I think he sustained a C#5 for 6 seconds in chest voice without any effort here; It's incredible how easily he was sustaining a note in the third octave, I hadn't noticed that before.
Something to comment about this solo in particular, one thing Iommi does is let his tone speak for itself if that makes. He allows the rhythm to be the driving force and use the guitar to progress what there already is. Every member I think is putting the song first, the story is the focus. Dio especially
I seriously doubt that Ronnie never had singing lessons, not just because his singing technique, but because of the person that he is. He loves his art, has always taken very good care of his voice, and always tried to give the best performance he could. He would definitely take singing lessons just to become a better singer and give his audience his best.
7:00 That's one of the reasons why Dio for me is the best vocalist in the history of rock and maybe even music; This singer is a true virtuoso of singing, look at the amount of control and extreme mastery he had over his voice as he sustains that very resonant C5 in a chest voice in a very controlled and effortless way, no other vocalist I know can sustain a note as high as this one in that register with that absurd ease, impressive the control and dominion that Dio had over his instrument.
Back in the day (in my teens, and 20's) I got to see Dio with Sabbath (Mob Rules tour) and 3 different Dio tours. He never, ever disappointed. He always sounded amazing.
Hand gesture is for giving or protection from the evil eye. The evil eye is the look or stare is a curse to bring bad luck or misfortune to the recipient of the gesture.
Masterful! Your last comment sums up the awesomness that was Ronnie James Dio. Words simply cannot convey how amazing this performance was. Thank you so much for including it...I had goosebumps from start to finish :)
Notice the guitarist, Tony Iommi, is using finger tip prosthetics. An accident in factory cut off the tips of his fingers. So he created his own tips and can still play. Ronnie was a RNR singer in the 1950/60's era. Check out "Ronnie Dio & The Red Caps" performing "Send me a ln Angel"
Ronnie said that horns gesture that his grandma would perform was a "get behind me satan" thing. I guess her community did in Italy. Not sure if it's regional or well known. My mom's Northern Italian and I never heard of it until I read an article on Ronnie James Dio....
I just love your detailed analysis of this one! So many things I would never have thought of that you of course hear - which I have missed in terms of technique etc...you are a joy to behold when you really get into these songs. Thanks for a great reaction once again!
"The world is full of Kings and Queens. Who blind your eyes and steal your dreams" This is so current... Thank you Dio for being part of the soundtrack of my life. We will never forget you.
I'm 46 and i remember being 13 or 14 and hearing this album (and drawing the cover art on my exercise books) and falling in love with it. the songwriting, the musicianship, the tone, the mood: it's an absolute masterpiece. you have to do lonely is the word, the last song. it's heartbreaking and his voice is sublime on it. it might be my favourite dio vocal performance!
Hey Beth! So good to see you dissecting the talent of the greatest singer in metal history! Dio is getting serious respect from you and for that, you are definitely our Sister In Metal \m/ Also, have you heard of the Swedish metal band "Candlemass"? You should check out their songs with the singer Messiah Marcolin, opera trained and an amazing voice. Give them a listen and do a video about them, I think you'll be pleasantly surprised! Until then, thanks for giving metal the love it so sorely deserves. See ya! :-)
Actually you are quite right about his hand gesture :D His grandma was Italian and she was using it to ward off evil spirits, then later it became a symbol of rock and metal :D Also before he joined Rainbow and later Sabbath, he had some other bands he was singing in blues/jazz style. There are some of those recordings on youtube.
Beeings like Ronnie bring the birth of theatre and orchestral music back to life in a marvelous evolved way that is just amazing. I can almost hear or feel a statement before every verse, "Now hear me!, the story goes like this!" Musical literature!
10:25, ohhh yes you are. Of course you are qualified to talk about sounds, playing is besides the part. I´ve come to really appreciate that keen ear of yours. Analizing and explainging technique in a very relatable way is not at all easy. An aware and open eared coach is a gem!.
It really is charming to see you nerd out so hard on RJD. The man deserves every ounce of it of course, and it's awesome to see musically educated people such as yourself, who truly respect talent and hard work , give him his due. The guy may have not had formal training but clearly he is an icon and a standout talent who's Legacy endures. This incarnation of Black Sabbath at a totally different vibe then their previous efforts with Ozzy. Both lineups are legendary of course. Ozzy had an innate ability to deliver a lyric and make you pay attention. Not to say he couldn't sing well, when he was on, he was on. But deal took their band in a much darker and yet more sophisticated Direction. Cheers for covering this year of Sabbath my dear, really really great to see this.
Ronnie did indeed play trumpet and was offered a scholarship at The Julliard in New York, which he did not take up, Ronnie said in a radio interview , which I have on cassette somewhwere, that "I am one of the lucky ones for who singing comes naturally.".Pretty much like Bruce Dicinson of Iron Maiden; Others, like David Draiman of Disturbed, Geoff Tate, formerly of Queensryche, and Anne Wilson of Heart have all had training. I didn't hsve any singing lessons until I swapped from singing in a heavy metal band to singing in an Amateur Operatic Society. But there is a difference between between singing in an amplified band with a microphone and singing unamplified onstage in a 1,100 seat Victorian opera house. On the subject of nature verses nurture. My father and his twin brother were very good singers, people say that I'm a very good singer, I used to play guitar until a stroke at the age of 29 put a stop to it, My cousin is an accomplisged cellist and her son is an accomplished pianist. I think that there has to be natural talent before it can be taken further by a teacher. You don't tend to find people with no musical talent whatsoever getting places in music academies, colleges or schools.
It's generally considered true that RJ Dio never had formal lessons, but growing up in a family of Italian descent he listened to a lot of opera which heavily influenced his vocal style. Perhaps that's why he has such good technique? Or perhaps it's simply because he's one of the Old Gods of Heavy Metal!
Also a tidbit of information; when Dio went into studio to record his part for the Tenacious D film, he had brought his own microphone, much to the confusion of producer John King, who claimed it wasn't necessary. Dio fried the studio mic on the first take. That's how powerful a singer he was. Keep in mind he was in his mid 60s at this point in time.
The horns hand gesture was originally to ward off the evil eye in Italy, Dio made it the universal salute in Heavy Rock/Metal (because the peace sign was too lame) Dio was one of my favourite rock singers ever and I loved his albums with Black Sabbath
Ronnie James Dio used to be a trumpet player for years before he was a singer. That's how he got the breath support and breath control to be as great as he is.
The hand gesture is called malocchia. When the fingers are pointed up, it’s to block the “Evil Eye”. To give the evil eye, you point the fingers at your target.
He was a unicorn. He wasn't "just a trumpet player". He was a Julliard accepted trumpeter of the first order. So we can presume he had tremendous breath support and control. It's also very true that he did everything that would be considered "horrible" for a rock and roll singer. He smoked, he drank, he never even warmed up!! He just went out there and sang! CRUSHING it every single time. I own and have heard over 100 different bootleg concerts from Elf - Heaven and Hell and not once did I ever hear a bad note, cracked voice or vocal problem. NOT ONCE! Simply put, he was put here to do one thing. SING! And sing he did!!!!! \m/ \m/ Love and miss you RJD!! Side note...this concert was a very frustrating night but Black Sabbath. They were in the middle of the "Black and Blue" tour with Blue Oyster Cult. They would trade off being the headliner and Blue Oyster Cult brought in a video crew to film the show but didn't tell Black Sabbath it was all being filmed. Dio was pissed and might explain the extra bites of grit at times. Also, if you see the opening number "Neon Knights" Dio's vocal mic doesn't work and he goes through two before they get it to work so off to a bad start already.
Ronnie James Dio was a trained opera singer. But he is also a very natural gifted singer. And you are very observent and have a great understanding of music. And you have a very unique way of explaining to your viewers what it is that they are listening to that is very simplistic. Keep doing what you do,it's nice to see someone have such an appreciation and understanding of good music. You have a wonderful skill yourself. Much appreciated.
If you want to have your ears tickled with joy, watch Dio perform “Mistreated” singing live in Germany for the band Rainbow in 1977.
When Dio comes back in after the solo is one of my all time favorite moments in music history.

I love how he has no classical back ground but he has created his own foundation
"The world is full of Kings and Queens. Who blind your eyes and steal your dreams" This is so current... Thank you Dio for being part of the soundtrack of my life. We will never forget you.
He used devil horn sign because ozzy always used the peace sign so dio wanted to something similair
Godly performance from all involved ! Beth, as Ronnie, you were on fire on this !
Black Sabbath was just a catalyst for two of the greatest musicians of history.
More than two I'd say.
My God girl you really understand. So refreshing to listen to you comment. Thank you
Hey Beth! So good to see you dissecting the talent of the greatest singer in metal history! Dio is getting serious respect from you and for that, you are definitely our Sister In Metal \m/
Also, have you heard of the Swedish metal band "Candlemass"? You should check out their songs with the singer Messiah Marcolin, opera trained and an amazing voice. Give them a listen and do a video about them, I think you'll be pleasantly surprised! Until then, thanks for giving metal the love it so sorely deserves. See ya! :-)
You should try "the last in line" live at the spectrum. ;)
you'd love that.
Great song, and very good version too. I loved this right when it came out.
Now its time for MISTREATED (Live with RAINBOW)
Beeings like Ronnie bring the birth of theatre and orchestral music back to life in a marvelous evolved way that is just amazing. I can almost hear or feel a statement before every verse, "Now hear me!, the story goes like this!"
Musical literature!
His surname says it all in Italian...he is truly the god of metal vocalists... amazing person...sorely missed
10:25, ohhh yes you are. Of course you are qualified to talk about sounds, playing is besides the part. I´ve come to really appreciate that keen ear of yours. Analizing and explainging technique in a very relatable way is not at all easy.
An aware and open eared coach is a gem!.
This is one of my favorite. Songs ever it gives me chill bumps I love it
Ronnie James Dio is an Immortal Legend, his Legacy will live on Forever!
Mistreated Live '77 in Munich by Dio is the greatest rock performance by any artist ever, imo. Check that out to have your brain blown.
I already wanted to see a video of you reacting to Ronnie James Dio singing 'Heaven and Hell', thank you very much. Greetings Beth! I love you.
I saw him Live seven times, and once with Heaven & Hell, Gentleman of Rock!! Left us too Soon. R.I.P.
This was such an amazing tour-
It really is charming to see you nerd out so hard on RJD.
Ms. Beth, you're very good at what you do. Thank you for your assessment.
I love this song and Dio's performance! Thanks for the awesome reaction! Your videos always make my day!
It's not just you....I fancy myself a singer, and this guy is just impossible to mimic. He is the epitome of a metal vocalist.
Awesome song !! Awesome reaction and narrative !! You're the best...
The hand gesture is called malocchia. When the fingers are pointed up, it’s to block the “Evil Eye”. To give the evil eye, you point the fingers at your target.
He interact with the music in a perfect way❤
He was singing way back in the late 50's as a teenager and just continued throughout all the genre's of rock. He attained perfection through time.
Ronnie is a Master Singer and performer.
It's from Italian origin, it is the Maloik used as a defense from the evil eye or persons
You are a magnificent human being. Just...magnificent. In every way.
One of the people I've seen who actually always sang better live than on the albums. he always added so much nuance to the songs in live performances.
Ronnie James Dio no was a trained opera singer, he never had, Dio was a natural vocalist.
Vocal coaches tend to grow attach to Dio as soon as they hear him start to sing ❤
He always improvised a lot live. Every song, every performance all slightly different :)
When it came to the intangibles he was phenomenal
