Every time I see Bill Ward playing drums all I can think is "They must owe him money!" As far as biting the head off a live bat, from what I understood was that someone in the audience threw either an unconscious or dead bat on stage. Ozzy, being most likely under the influence of some sort, thought it was a toy and bit the head off. After they found out it wasn't fake, he wound up in medical care for a series of rabies shots.
it wasn't a live bat nor was it at a concert/show. Ozzy bit the head off of a rubber bat (under the recommendation of Sharon) in a meeting with a record label when he left Black Sabbath and was going solo. This got leaked and through the power of Chinese whispers/word of mouth got warped into "Ozzy bit the head off a live bat whilst performing on stage".
Ozzy Was a crazy dude even in the early days - as in crazy talent but I was forbidden by parents to even go there - I was 7 yrs old when black sabbath made this and I’m 61 now
Interesting that Ward is center stage, Ozzy left and slightly forward, Geezer on the right and Lommi behind Ozzy. Pretty much the opposite of how most Rock bands position themselves on stage.
Shame Geezer Butler never seemed to get much camera time during live performances. His bass work was a driving FORCE. Love Geezer and Bill. Great rhythm section!
Geezer actually gets more focus in other songs from this show. And it´s a smart move and some good camera work.to center on Bills awesome work in this partcular song. We´re lucky that this live performance was so nicely captured. A true musical treasure.
He bit the head off of Dove and a bat. Sharon Osborne gave him two doves to walk into a meeting with record executives and release them. He was then sitting on a woman's knee when a dove landed. He grabbed it and bit the head off. They banned him from the building. Source - Sharon Osborne The bat was later. Someone threw it on stage. He thought it was fake. We take metal for granted now but in 1970 this was groundbreaking stuff. Without Sabbath so much of the metal we love might not have happened. This stuff must have been mind blowing back then
Bill's drum kit just shakes in fear before every gig. Always asking what it did wrong to be beaten like that. Love seeing him play live....just an animal back there.
What is truly remarkable in the Rhythm Section of Sabbath is that it is such an orbital Jazz influenced nebulous sort of push and pull that gives it all the energy. Obviously Tony was the god of riffs and his guitar solos are legendary but what's happening underneath it in call and response between Bill Ward and Geezer Butler is really the Primal energy that made Sabbath sound so unique. In the middle of the solo there's a repeated phrase where Bill starts to mimic it on the drums of all things and if it comes this like Proto blast beat sort of thing that he's doing for Dynamics against Tony's whaling guitar and it is just amazingly spontaneous and kick ass. Really ahead of the Curve
This whole show from 1970 is one of the reasons I can not say that Zep, Floyd, Sabbath, Rush, or Deep Purple are above each other. All 5 bands were on a tier that is above all other bands. Those 5 bands were in a catagory of all their own.
I found those bands on vinyl records in my local 2nd hand vinyl store when I was 13.... I still think it is the best music I ever found. And I have seen several hundreds of concerts across multiple genres...
Totally agree. Those bands were not only groundbreaking and different than anything else they were all 5 completely different from one another. All of those bands had their own unique sound, approach and image. What is crazy is that other than Rush all those bands are from England or Uk whatever not to mention other acts like The Who, Rolling Stones, Clapton etc... were from across the pond as well. Over here we had Steppenwolf, Grand Funk, Alice Cooper and Kiss All good bands but not near the level of the acts coming from the UK at the time.
This is definitely early Sabbath. Ozzy Osbourne was the lead singer then and was only 22 years old. He's now 75 years old. I am 54 and am proud to say I have had the fortune to "Kneel before the throne of the Prince of Darkness" when Ozzy and Rob Zombie came to Billings Montana in 2009. Edit: What amazes me about Ozzy is that (as shown in this video); he is just as great vocally on stage as he is in the studio. Even when he was here in 2009 at age 60: his live singing sounded as great as the studio tracks I listen to in my hime or my vehicle. That is something very few live performers can do.
This is the original cut of this song. It was banned by the record label before they could put it on the actual album. Look for the “Basement tape” version, the lyrics are a tad more dark compared to this version. The label thought at the time it was too “Edgy” to release so they forced them to redo the lyrics. Sabbath was 100% ahead of their time. The whole bad is/was super talented.
By this point in 1970, Black Sabbath had been playing together for 2 years since 1968 as a local covers band that played blues and old rock n' roll music... They had only started writing their own songs in 1969 and their progression musically was nothing short of a miracle. Black Sabbath's early sound was so intense and heavy that it spawned an entirely new genre of music that became known as 'heavy metal' 🤘🤘 There was literally no band in 1970 that looked and sounded like Black Sabbath (Led Zeppelin and Deep Purple were great but not like them at all, even though all 3 bands played guitar-heavy hard rock music)
I remember reading a quote from Shelley Burke of Budgie, saying how in 1969 they went to a recording studio in Birmingham to record some demo's. A studio tech told them enthusiastically that Black Sabbath had been there a few weeks earlier recording a demo too. Shelley just replied 'Right on man', he had no idea who they were at the time 😂
I saw Sabbath at Ozzfest in 98. It was the first time they'd played together in years. After too many concerts to count, It's still probably at the top of my list. I don't know who could ever top it.
Over 50 years old and still enjoyed by millions to this day - who thinks ANY song of Lady Gaga, Nicki Minaj or Harry Styles will be played in 50 years from now?
I am 52 and a Metal Head but love most types of music. I was trying to explain to my Son in Law that indeed another 50 years and more from now Sabbath will still be known, AC/DC will still be known Pink Floyd will still be known etc... and even though I do enjoy Rap and HipHop I am extremely picky about how it is done. Son in Law throwing me all this lame ass mumble rap shit that barely meets the requirements to say it is music and can't understand why I disregard the shit. You are right...I said the same in 50 years from now all these mumble rappers and most mainstream artists will be long forgotten because it seems these days you do not have to be talented at all to get on the radio or in the charts. Even though I will give Lady GaGa a pass man she actually has some different stuff and it is unique and not cookie cutter.
obviously people will still listen to those artistes in 50 years or 100 years, people like a wide array of music and a LOT of people like those particular artistes
For me they are part of the 4 best hard rock and heavy metal bands with Led Zeppelin Black Sabbath and Ufo, when you see the quality of the musicians as well Bill Ward who I consider to be the best drummer of all time as Ozzy as a singer is phenomenal, I do not forget Tony Lommi who excels in lead guitar and Geezer Butler who is a prodigal bassist, in short we do not make groups like that anymore, all my musical culture which rocked my adolescence, these groups had things to say contrary to what is done today
This sound is so raw it's basically still in the 60s. A great example of how music isn't rigidly divided by decades, but changes as new techniques gradually come into the field.
What kind of blows my mind too is the sound quality from a live club performance.. and the cameras.. it's top notch.. and they boys just kick so much ass. Cheers one of my fav songs of all time.. this all during Viet Nam as well
The first LP I ever bought was Paranoid back in 1970. It blew my mind and after that i could never listen to 'soft' rock as a teenager. From then on it was BS, LZ, PF, Uriah Heep, Yes, Genesis, Ground Hogs et al.
in 1970 the war in Vietnam was still raging. Politicians were looked at as warmongers since the war lasted so long with no apparent victory. I bet he's talking about them.
'69-'70 was my senior year in high school! If you weren't there you can't even imagine what it was like! Drugs, sex, and rock 'n roll! My memories are beautiful and wild af!💯🤗❤️✌️
Live in the elks lodge , with Martin setting up he audio on two day bender, and it still sounds that good …. Talent , blessed ..as are we to be able to witness .
Tonny Iommi cut the tip of his finger off in accident at factory he worked at. He melted plastic bottle caps to put over finger to keep playing. It gave his sound the “heavy” sound. First time heavy Metal was used. It was in Cream magazine, I believe.
Story goes it was a real bat that someone threw on stage. He thought it was a rubber bat. He put it in his mouth and bit down on it. This happened in Des Moines Iowa.
Ozzy accidentally bit of the head of a bat. Someone threw it on stage during a performance, Ozzy thought it was a prop/rubber bat, so yea. He only realised it was a real bat the next day when it was the headlines everywhere. As for how Ozzy not realise it was a real bat after biting its head off, well, he used to well known for constantly being under the influence of various substances.
If he only realized it the next day then why did I see Ozzy in an interview say (paraphrasing it) "people think the show when on and we kept rocking. NO! I got rushed off stage and got rushed to the hospital to get rabies shots"?
Sabbath's melding of mind-shredding heaviness and monster riffs to use as a launchpad for exploration/improvisation seemed brand new and unprecedented. Stunning band, great body of work. Must agree with the other commenter who opined that Bill Ward plays like the drums owe him money. 😅😂Still a fave funny. 😊
So happy you watched this. Just think, 1970, the birth of heavy metal. and the Riff Master on lead. BTW, a new video came out featuring Ozzy at the age of 75, and he kills it as usual.
1970…1970!?! Yeah it was a long time ago. I was a junior in high school. We had more than any generation deserved of this amazing music. We had badass muscle cars, and I got to live it. At times, I still can’t feel it.
It had been flying around and hit a light overhead and fell on him. Ozzy thought someone threw it at him. After this incident, some people did throw bats at him (at later concerts).
Fun fact: Tony, was injured on his last day at work(partial amputation of his fingertips) before joining Sabbath full time. His left fingers have artificial padding from the injury, which you can see in this video. I believe he played with this for his entire career.
Interestingly enough, due to the uncomfortable tension of the strings on his fingertips across the fret, even with the added padding, he eventually had to tune his strings two octaves lower so he could play for extended periods of time, thus creating that particular sound in his guitar that later became the sound of metal... The rest is history, as we know it.. 🤟😎
This song was written during the Viet Nam war, so it makes even more sense when you think about that. He was banned from San Antonio for pissing on the Alamo. Yeah, growing up, I never thought I'd see grandpa Ozzy with a reality show.
On January 20th 1982 in Des moines, Iowa Ozzy bit the infamous bat. My friend Mark Neal's little brother found the bat in their back yard and tried to save it. After the bat died our friend Carmen told Mark he should save it for the upcoming concert. Mark put it in a cleaned out mayo jar and in the fridge. Not the freezer. Two weeks later on the day of the concert it was rotten but Mark put it in a plastic bad and took it to Vets auditorium in the inside pocket of his jean jacket. A few songs into Ozzy's set he threw it on stage. At first Ozzy didn't see it but when he did he picked it up said "you guys want to get crazy" and bit into in. Did not bite the head off. Ozzy quickly spit it out, obviously because of the horrible taste. Ozzy had to get the first set of rabies shots at a local hospital. The Des Moines Register wrote a story at that time which included Mark. Years later the BBC did a story on Mark.
I was only 7 years old when this performance was taken and I can remember hearing this song playing on the radio for the first time! My cousin was 15 and he turned me on to Black Sabbath's music! Listen to Crazy Train it's my favorite song and the lyrics are not what you would expect from Black Sabbath!! It was released in 1980!!!
My 4 year old Granddaughter loves this song, she’ll say “Play Pappy’s song” Now the funny thing is, she’s referring to my Dad (her great Grandpa) She heard this song one day and my son told her that his Pappy used to love this song, my Dad passed way 6 years before she was even born.
The bat story goes , from what I heard, Ozzy used to bite the head off of fake bats as part of the stage performance. Someone had brought a real knocked out bat to the show and tossed it onstage and he didn't know . He ended up having to have rabies shots for it and stuff ... Also there is an older , slightly darker version of war pigs called Walpurgis that this version was taken from .... Great video as always man 👍
The war and warriors had a rough time 66-70 was brutal. All the war was bad, but it was insane when these songs came out. They are reflections of the times but still relevant today. No DRAFT. Welcome Home Vets! ✌
He bit the head of a bat at a concert in Des Moines Iowa in 1982. It was his Diary Of A Mad Man tour. It was the first Ozzy concert I went to, I was a freshman in high school He thought it was a rubber bat when he bit into it he freaked out. Up to that the concert was amazing. He also bit the head off a dove while at a meeting with a record company. He was also sitting in a girls lap when he did it. There are pictures of him biting the head off the dove.
This song was genius in the time it came out. It was an anti-war song during Vietnam. Funny story, I went to basic training at Ft Benning and we had this one drill sgt that used the words of this song as a running cadence and added in some colorful infantry lines as well.
In an interview he said he DID bite the head off a bat. Someone threw it on stage and he thought it was a rubber bat. He was also VERY drunk at the time. But the legend lives on...
All true. Thanks.
Notice Bill is using the big end of the drum sticks for harder and louder sounds
He did bite the dead off a dove at a record company meeting.
Nobody hit the drums any harder than Bill Ward.
it wasn't a live bat nor was it at a concert/show. Most underrated drummer of all time. Bill Ward.❤
Showin those drums who's boss!
Yeah
I would never have said underrated, my favorite, Honorable mentions to Mike Bordin and Nicko McBrain
Not by drummers.
@@BayouMaccabee I was alive in 1970. These guys got 0 press because of the church. Bill Ward most underrated drummer. Ever.
Just 4 guys no backing track no autotune just raw talent and great musicality.
Yes things have changed since 1970, but one thing that remains consistent are the war pigs.
Amen!
Well said.
Yep, every president in my 60 years are war criminals.
True that....but, unfortunately they own planet Earth and who knows what else....oh, the moon too. lol 🙏🤪
@cbody70 Once again f'ing UA-cam hiding/ censoring my comment. Pussies.
Best performance for a drummer 1970 ,,,,Award goes to Bill Ward
Maybe one of the top ten, hell, top five.
Mind blowing!
Interesting that Ward is center stage, Ozzy left and slightly forward, Geezer on the right and Lommi behind Ozzy. Pretty much the opposite of how most Rock bands position themselves on stage.
Remember there was no auto tune then. It was just pure raw talent. You should check out the video version, it will blow your mind! Love your reaction!
Bill Ward is so underrated. One of the best drummers of all time. Hes right there with Bonham, Moon and Peart. He needs more recognition
I was 14 when they did this. Raw performance at it's best.

Black Sabbath is not primarily about Ozzy but more about all four members of this incredible band
I prefer the original line up. Same with Van Halen.
sabbath with dio was never the same, good but not sabbath. ozzy is sabbath.

Saw them at Rockford Speedway, the Black and Blue tour in 80's
Iconic and ahead of its time.
Also, the lyrics that most people know and love, are different from what he sings here.
2nd album. Their first album was called Black Sabbath. The Wizard was my favorite off the first album.
Watching Ozzy onstage is sometimes like watching a kid in a candy store. It's evident he truly loves what he does.
Outstanding live performance!
Interesting how all four members of the band that created metal are still alive.
I know others have said it: but truly ponder this…PURE raw talent. ZERO tech to help them out. Fucking Christ is it amazing!!
I saw them perform in Seattle in '71. Awesome.
Black Sabbath 1968-eternity🤘
I was only 7 years old when this performance was taken and I can remember hearing this song playing on the radio for the first time! My cousin was 15 and he turned me on to Black Sabbath's music! Listen to Crazy Train it's my favorite song and the lyrics are not what you would expect from Black Sabbath!! It was released in 1980!!!
Bad ass drummer ! The whole video sick
Ozzy plays harmonica on the track "Wizard" which is on the debut album "Black sabbath".
My very first concert 1972... Walked out of the Hordern Pavillion Sydney.
My hearing never recovered.
The drums. The voice. Magical😊
Only had the pleasure once, but it was beautiful. Ozzy really knows how to engage the audience and his enthusiasm is infectious.
The bat was a accident but the dove came after that. He did in front of some music exec or something of that nature
It's crazy to realize that this is only 16 years after Elvis debuted in 1954.
Until Black Sabbath we had never heard anything like this before!
It was 1973 when I got this album, freshman in high school.......
Here in Central NJ,We havnt gotten real snow but 3x in 2 yrs. Sucks.
This is the year I was born and there's Ozzy going crazy on the stage.1st time I've ever see him live.great reaction!
Black, you would really enjoy Ozzy’s brilliant-stylistic lyricism! Please check out his theatrical mastery in:
No More Tears
Or Iron man... 👍🏻😎
Great video as always man 👍
'Ol Bill Ward beating those drums like they owe him money
Yes sir, THIS is how we rocked in the 70’s! Jealous? You should be! 🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🔥
