Every time I see Bill Ward playing drums all I can think is "They must owe him money!" As far as biting the head off a live bat, from what I understood was that someone in the audience threw either an unconscious or dead bat on stage. Ozzy, being most likely under the influence of some sort, thought it was a toy and bit the head off. After they found out it wasn't fake, he wound up in medical care for a series of rabies shots.
it wasn't a live bat nor was it at a concert/show. Ozzy bit the head off of a rubber bat (under the recommendation of Sharon) in a meeting with a record label when he left Black Sabbath and was going solo. This got leaked and through the power of Chinese whispers/word of mouth got warped into "Ozzy bit the head off a live bat whilst performing on stage".
Interesting that Ward is center stage, Ozzy left and slightly forward, Geezer on the right and Lommi behind Ozzy. Pretty much the opposite of how most Rock bands position themselves on stage.
Ozzy Was a crazy dude even in the early days - as in crazy talent but I was forbidden by parents to even go there - I was 7 yrs old when black sabbath made this and I’m 61 now
Shame Geezer Butler never seemed to get much camera time during live performances. His bass work was a driving FORCE. Love Geezer and Bill. Great rhythm section!
Geezer actually gets more focus in other songs from this show. And it´s a smart move and some good camera work.to center on Bills awesome work in this partcular song. We´re lucky that this live performance was so nicely captured. A true musical treasure.
We take metal for granted now but in 1970 this was groundbreaking stuff. Without Sabbath so much of the metal we love might not have happened. This stuff must have been mind blowing back then
This whole show from 1970 is one of the reasons I can not say that Zep, Floyd, Sabbath, Rush, or Deep Purple are above each other. All 5 bands were on a tier that is above all other bands. Those 5 bands were in a catagory of all their own.
I found those bands on vinyl records in my local 2nd hand vinyl store when I was 13.... I still think it is the best music I ever found. And I have seen several hundreds of concerts across multiple genres...
Totally agree. Those bands were not only groundbreaking and different than anything else they were all 5 completely different from one another. All of those bands had their own unique sound, approach and image. What is crazy is that other than Rush all those bands are from England or Uk whatever not to mention other acts like The Who, Rolling Stones, Clapton etc... were from across the pond as well. Over here we had Steppenwolf, Grand Funk, Alice Cooper and Kiss All good bands but not near the level of the acts coming from the UK at the time.
He bit the head off of Dove and a bat. Sharon Osborne gave him two doves to walk into a meeting with record executives and release them. He was then sitting on a woman's knee when a dove landed. He grabbed it and bit the head off. They banned him from the building. Source - Sharon Osborne The bat was later. Someone threw it on stage. He thought it was fake. Bill's drum kit just shakes in fear before every gig. Always asking what it did wrong to be beaten like that. Love seeing him play live....just an animal back there.
What is truly remarkable in the Rhythm Section of Sabbath is that it is such an orbital Jazz influenced nebulous sort of push and pull that gives it all the energy. Obviously Tony was the god of riffs and his guitar solos are legendary but what's happening underneath it in call and response between Bill Ward and Geezer Butler is really the Primal energy that made Sabbath sound so unique. In the middle of the solo there's a repeated phrase where Bill starts to mimic it on the drums of all things and if it comes this like Proto blast beat sort of thing that he's doing for Dynamics against Tony's whaling guitar and it is just amazingly spontaneous and kick ass. Really ahead of the Curve
By this point in 1970, Black Sabbath had been playing together for 2 years since 1968 as a local covers band that played blues and old rock n' roll music... They had only started writing their own songs in 1969 and their progression musically was nothing short of a miracle. Black Sabbath's early sound was so intense and heavy that it spawned an entirely new genre of music that became known as 'heavy metal' 🤘🤘 There was literally no band in 1970 that looked and sounded like Black Sabbath (Led Zeppelin and Deep Purple were great but not like them at all, even though all 3 bands played guitar-heavy hard rock music)
I remember reading a quote from Shelley Burke of Budgie, saying how in 1969 they went to a recording studio in Birmingham to record some demo's. A studio tech told them enthusiastically that Black Sabbath had been there a few weeks earlier recording a demo too. Shelley just replied 'Right on man', he had no idea who they were at the time 😂
Over 50 years old and still enjoyed by millions to this day - who thinks ANY song of Lady Gaga, Nicki Minaj or Harry Styles will be played in 50 years from now?
I am 52 and a Metal Head but love most types of music. I was trying to explain to my Son in Law that indeed another 50 years and more from now Sabbath will still be known, AC/DC will still be known Pink Floyd will still be known etc... and even though I do enjoy Rap and HipHop I am extremely picky about how it is done. Son in Law throwing me all this lame ass mumble rap shit that barely meets the requirements to say it is music and can't understand why I disregard the shit. You are right...I said the same in 50 years from now all these mumble rappers and most mainstream artists will be long forgotten because it seems these days you do not have to be talented at all to get on the radio or in the charts. Even though I will give Lady GaGa a pass man she actually has some different stuff and it is unique and not cookie cutter.
obviously people will still listen to those artistes in 50 years or 100 years, people like a wide array of music and a LOT of people like those particular artistes
The first LP I ever bought was Paranoid back in 1970. It blew my mind and after that i could never listen to 'soft' rock as a teenager. From then on it was BS, LZ, PF, Uriah Heep, Yes, Genesis, Ground Hogs et al.
This is the original cut of this song. It was banned by the record label before they could put it on the actual album. Look for the “Basement tape” version, the lyrics are a tad more dark compared to this version. The label thought at the time it was too “Edgy” to release so they forced them to redo the lyrics. Sabbath was 100% ahead of their time. The whole bad is/was super talented.
I saw Sabbath at Ozzfest in 98. It was the first time they'd played together in years. After too many concerts to count, It's still probably at the top of my list. I don't know who could ever top it.
This sound is so raw it's basically still in the 60s. A great example of how music isn't rigidly divided by decades, but changes as new techniques gradually come into the field.
What kind of blows my mind too is the sound quality from a live club performance.. and the cameras.. it's top notch.. and they boys just kick so much ass. Cheers one of my fav songs of all time.. this all during Viet Nam as well

in 1970 the war in Vietnam was still raging. Politicians were looked at as warmongers since the war lasted so long with no apparent victory. I bet he's talking about them.
This is definitely early Sabbath. Ozzy Osbourne was the lead singer then and was only 22 years old. He's now 75 years old. I am 54 and am proud to say I have had the fortune to "Kneel before the throne of the Prince of Darkness" when Ozzy and Rob Zombie came to Billings Montana in 2009. Edit: What amazes me about Ozzy is that (as shown in this video); he is just as great vocally on stage as he is in the studio. Even when he was here in 2009 at age 60: his live singing sounded as great as the studio tracks I listen to in my hime or my vehicle. That is something very few live performers can do.
Tonny Iommi cut the tip of his finger off in accident at factory he worked at. He melted plastic bottle caps to put over finger to keep playing. It gave his sound the “heavy” sound. First time heavy Metal was used. It was in Cream magazine, I believe.
So happy you watched this. Just think, 1970, the birth of heavy metal. and the Riff Master on lead. BTW, a new video came out featuring Ozzy at the age of 75, and he kills it as usual.
Fun fact: Tony, was injured on his last day at work(partial amputation of his fingertips) before joining Sabbath full time. His left fingers have artificial padding from the injury, which you can see in this video. I believe he played with this for his entire career.
Interestingly enough, due to the uncomfortable tension of the strings on his fingertips across the fret, even with the added padding, he eventually had to tune his strings two octaves lower so he could play for extended periods of time, thus creating that particular sound in his guitar that later became the sound of metal... The rest is history, as we know it.. 🤟😎
Sabbath's melding of mind-shredding heaviness and monster riffs to use as a launchpad for exploration/improvisation seemed brand new and unprecedented. Stunning band, great body of work. Must agree with the other commenter who opined that Bill Ward plays like the drums owe him money. 😅😂Still a fave funny. 😊
It had been flying around and hit a light overhead and fell on him. Ozzy thought someone threw it at him. After this incident, some people did throw bats at him (at later concerts).
'69-'70 was my senior year in high school! If you weren't there you can't even imagine what it was like! Drugs, sex, and rock 'n roll! My memories are beautiful and wild af!💯🤗❤️✌️
On January 20th 1982 in Des moines, Iowa Ozzy bit the infamous bat. My friend Mark Neal's little brother found the bat in their back yard and tried to save it. After the bat died our friend Carmen told Mark he should save it for the upcoming concert. Mark put it in a cleaned out mayo jar and in the fridge. Not the freezer. Two weeks later on the day of the concert it was rotten but Mark put it in a plastic bad and took it to Vets auditorium in the inside pocket of his jean jacket. A few songs into Ozzy's set he threw it on stage. At first Ozzy didn't see it but when he did he picked it up said "you guys want to get crazy" and bit into in. Did not bite the head off. Ozzy quickly spit it out, obviously because of the horrible taste. Ozzy had to get the first set of rabies shots at a local hospital. The Des Moines Register wrote a story at that time which included Mark. Years later the BBC did a story on Mark.
For me they are part of the 4 best hard rock and heavy metal bands with Led Zeppelin Black Sabbath and Ufo, when you see the quality of the musicians as well Bill Ward who I consider to be the best drummer of all time as Ozzy as a singer is phenomenal, I do not forget Tony Lommi who excels in lead guitar and Geezer Butler who is a prodigal bassist, in short we do not make groups like that anymore, all my musical culture which rocked my adolescence, these groups had things to say contrary to what is done today
One of the most infamous days of Ozzy Osbourne's career came on March 27, 1981, when he bit the heads off of two white doves during a business meeting with his record label. Ozzy and his then-manager and future wife Sharon Arden dropped by Epic Records' annual sales meeting to "make nice" after some rocky months with the label. The Prince of Darkness was supposed to deliver a brief speech and punctuate it by releasing the three doves in a grand gesture of peace. Unfortunately, Ozzy was extremely drunk at the time (even by his standards) and not very interested in the business being discussed. He later recalled pulling the stunt with the two doves just to shut up a publicist who was boring him. After spitting the head of the second dove onto the table, Ozzy was thrown out of the building. Bassist Rudy Sarzo had just recently joined Ozzy's live band around this time and was staying with Sharon's family. He encountered Ozzy later that same day on the Arden property. "I was hanging out and waiting to do the rehearsals, and I bump into Ozzy and he tells me the whole dove story that had just happened," Sarzo recalled to Yahoo! "And as we were talking, I see that his jacket is flapping. I go, 'What's that?' And he puts his hand in his pocket, pulls out another bird, looks at it and he just goes and bites the head off again - right in front of me! I gross-out, and he just laughs and keeps walking." While the bird-biting fiasco went on to ignite Ozzy's solo career, at the time the former Black Sabbath frontman had every reason to believe he had sabotaged his career for the last time. Sarzo, who doesn't believe Ozzy could have gotten away with the same stunt today, admits he had no idea how to react to the private display. "Randy [Rhoads] had been there for about a year and a half, so he mentored me and said, 'Listen, don't take it personal. This is the way they do things.' And so I rolled with it because I had never experienced anything like it before. I thought, 'OK, all the bands at this level must have this, um, unusual behavior,'" Sarzo says he reasoned. He later found out that, "No, no - it just happens to be Ozzy." And that wasn't even the last time Sarzo watched Ozzy dismember an animal with his teeth. Sarzo was onstage with Ozzy the following year in Des Moines, Iowa, when Ozzy bit the head off a dead bat that had been thrown onto the stage. Ozzy, who became a spokesman for PETA in 2020, isn't proud of the bird-biting today. He maintains that he only sunk his teeth into the bat in '82 because he thought it was fake. He regretted it instantly, and was quickly treated for rabies afterwards.
AND he thought the bat was FAKE, a rubber halloween bat and it wasn't. Sharon was on the side of the stage trying to get Ozzy's attention to tell him NO IT'S FAKE, but too late
@@no_onein2024 were you there in the room when that happened........... if not then how are you so positive it was only one ......... i wasnt there so i do not know if it was 2 or 20........ i found the info and posted it here ......... if you were in the room please show me proof
1970…1970!?! Yeah it was a long time ago. I was a junior in high school. We had more than any generation deserved of this amazing music. We had badass muscle cars, and I got to live it. At times, I still can’t feel it.
This song was written during the Viet Nam war, so it makes even more sense when you think about that. He was banned from San Antonio for pissing on the Alamo. Yeah, growing up, I never thought I'd see grandpa Ozzy with a reality show.
The bat story goes , from what I heard, Ozzy used to bite the head off of fake bats as part of the stage performance. Someone had brought a real knocked out bat to the show and tossed it onstage and he didn't know . He ended up having to have rabies shots for it and stuff ... Also there is an older , slightly darker version of war pigs called Walpurgis that this version was taken from .... Great video as always man 👍
You’ve only heard war pigs and paranoid from Sabbath? There is a zero percent chance you haven’t heard Iron Man by Black Sabbath. Even if you think you’ve heard it check it out there are some over looked riffs in there. They really get busy in the second half. One of their best and biggest songs.
Ozzy accidentally bit of the head of a bat. Someone threw it on stage during a performance, Ozzy thought it was a prop/rubber bat, so yea. He only realised it was a real bat the next day when it was the headlines everywhere. As for how Ozzy not realise it was a real bat after biting its head off, well, he used to well known for constantly being under the influence of various substances.
If he only realized it the next day then why did I see Ozzy in an interview say (paraphrasing it) "people think the show when on and we kept rocking. NO! I got rushed off stage and got rushed to the hospital to get rabies shots"?
I was only 7 years old when this performance was taken and I can remember hearing this song playing on the radio for the first time! My cousin was 15 and he turned me on to Black Sabbath's music! Listen to Crazy Train it's my favorite song and the lyrics are not what you would expect from Black Sabbath!! It was released in 1980!!!
Love this song... one of my favorite albums too. I'm in my late 50's now... things have really changed a lot since I was young... Now as for the bat... that's the least of it... Motley Crue said when he was touring with them that he literally snorted a line of ants... yeah... snorted ants. How high do you have to be to do that???
Ozzy plays good basic harmonica but his greatest instrumental impact on Black Sabbath is the day he bought a brand new Moog. You'll find that on Sabbath Bloody Sabbath - Who Are You.
That Moog part always reminded me of the Dr. Who theme a bit. My friend is actually a representative with Moog Synths they are based in Ashville NC. I am a huge fan of analog synthesizers and I am going to try and leave a link here for a video of Ozzy after he bought an Arp 2600 it is absolutely hilarious. It seems sometimes links don't survive so if there is not a link simply UA-cam Ozzy Arp synthesizer it will pop right up. ua-cam.com/video/O855kBY3mcs/v-deo.htmlsi=K1nb9LckUr1FFFQp
He bit the head of a bat at a concert in Des Moines Iowa in 1982. It was his Diary Of A Mad Man tour. It was the first Ozzy concert I went to, I was a freshman in high school He thought it was a rubber bat when he bit into it he freaked out. Up to that the concert was amazing. He also bit the head off a dove while at a meeting with a record company. He was also sitting in a girls lap when he did it. There are pictures of him biting the head off the dove.
My 4 year old Granddaughter loves this song, she’ll say “Play Pappy’s song” Now the funny thing is, she’s referring to my Dad (her great Grandpa) She heard this song one day and my son told her that his Pappy used to love this song, my Dad passed way 6 years before she was even born.
In an interview he said he DID bite the head off a bat. Someone threw it on stage and he thought it was a rubber bat. He was also VERY drunk at the time. But the legend lives on...
"If they have anything big Im missing out on..." Their first four albums, easy. Hell, rheir first album spearheaded the entire metal genre and all the subgenres that come with it.
The war and warriors had a rough time 66-70 was brutal. All the war was bad, but it was insane when these songs came out. They are reflections of the times but still relevant today. No DRAFT. Welcome Home Vets! ✌

Fun fact: Tony, was injured on his last day at work(partial amputation of his fingertips) before joining Sabbath full time. His left fingers have artificial padding from the injury, which you can see in this video. I believe he played with this for his entire career.
Yes bro. Is one of tge best guitar players of all time 🙂🎸🎶🎵👍🏼
Interestingly enough, due to the uncomfortable tension of the strings on his fingertips across the fret, even with the added padding, he eventually had to tune his strings two octaves lower so he could play for extended periods of time, thus creating that particular sound in his guitar that later became the sound of metal... The rest is history, as we know it.. 🤟😎
Bill Ward…what a damn BEAST! And Geezer Butler played bass like it was lead! I’m 61 and still roll the windows down and crank this up.
Ozzy plays the harmonica - Listen to The Wizard 1970 ! Saw them in 1973 NYC (Warm up band was a no name band called Aerosmith)
😮
Sabbath's melding of mind-shredding heaviness and monster riffs to use as a launchpad for exploration/improvisation seemed brand new and unprecedented. Stunning band, great body of work.
Must agree with the other commenter who opined that Bill Ward plays like the drums owe him money. 😅😂Still a fave funny. 😊
How do those tiny 1970 drums make that much sound?!? Some great energy and incredible lyrics.
he held his sticks the other way round on this one
People through stuff on to the stage he picked up a bat thinking it was a stuffed toy and bit the head off before he relized lol
It had been flying around and hit a light overhead and fell on him. Ozzy thought someone threw it at him.
After this incident, some people did throw bats at him (at later concerts).
Ozzy went through 14 days of anti rabies injections after that bat episode.
It's so great to transport back in time with you and recreate those moments that were lost. I don't think I ever saw this. It is so crazy to watch.😮
'69-'70 was my senior year in high school! If you weren't there you can't even imagine what it was like! Drugs, sex, and rock 'n roll! My memories are beautiful and wild af!💯🤗❤️✌️
Watching Ozzy onstage is sometimes like watching a kid in a candy store. It's evident he truly loves what he does.
Epic performance. Ozzy was truly a shining star, he is a frekkin animal on stage!... they all were!
Black, you would really enjoy Ozzy’s brilliant-stylistic lyricism! Please check out his theatrical mastery in:
No More Tears
Or Iron man... 👍🏻😎
I saw an interview and he said someone threw a bat on stage. He thought it was fake and bit it's head off.
I gross-out, and he just laughs and keeps walking."
While the bird-biting fiasco went on to ignite Ozzy's solo career, at the time the former Black Sabbath frontman had every reason to believe he had sabotaged his career for the last time.
He later found out that, "No, no - it just happens to be Ozzy."
And that wasn't even the last time Sarzo watched Ozzy dismember an animal with his teeth.
Exactly a year before I was born! He was such an animal! lol
@@JokerInk-CustomBuilds lol.......
It was ONE dove, the other one flew out of the bag unharmed lol
It's crazy to realize that this is only 16 years after Elvis debuted in 1954.
Bad ass drummer ! The whole video sick
Also, the lyrics that most people know and love, are different from what he sings here.
Great video as always man 👍
Ozzy and Black Sabbath was my #1 favorite growing up. Had every album ❤
One of my all time Favorite live Performances Bill Ward Is Amazing on Drums they are all Great.
Until Black Sabbath we had never heard anything like this before!
Outstanding live performance!
Iconic and ahead of its time.
Saw them at Rockford Speedway, the Black and Blue tour in 80's
2nd album. Their first album was called Black Sabbath. The Wizard was my favorite off the first album.
Only had the pleasure once, but it was beautiful. Ozzy really knows how to engage the audience and his enthusiasm is infectious.
Love this song... one of my favorite albums too. I'm in my late 50's now... things have really changed a lot since I was young... Now as for the bat... that's the least of it... Motley Crue said when he was touring with them that he literally snorted a line of ants... yeah... snorted ants. How high do you have to be to do that???
this drummer is a sick f man ..incredible song!
I was 8 years old when this came out and its still just awesome .....
@@kennethbartlett4302 The bridge on Who Are You is definitely not Ozzy. Either Tony or (and it sounds like him to me) Rick Wakeman.
OZZY MAN, YOU ARE HEAD BANGER KING!! ❤YOU MAN❤ BP, does it remind you of the video of Joe Cocker @ Woodstock? Everybody riding high! ❤
Birmingham boys. Love that Ozzy still has his Brummie accent and his brilliant Brummie sense of humour.
Yes sir, THIS is how we rocked in the 70’s! Jealous? You should be! 🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🔥
"If they have anything big Im missing out on..."
Their first four albums, easy. Hell, rheir first album spearheaded the entire metal genre and all the subgenres that come with it.
Here in Central NJ,We havnt gotten real snow but 3x in 2 yrs. Sucks.
The war and warriors had a rough time 66-70 was brutal. All the war was bad, but it was insane when these songs came out. They are reflections of the times but still relevant today. No DRAFT. Welcome Home Vets! ✌
I saw them perform in Seattle in '71. Awesome.
Nobody else sounded like this in 1970, this is why they are considered one of the founders of heavy metal
My very first concert 1972... Walked out of the Hordern Pavillion Sydney.
My hearing never recovered.
Black Sabbath 1968-eternity🤘
The drums. The voice. Magical😊
