Depends what someone classes as 'metal'. The beginning of Deep Purple's Speed King is certainly metal, also the speed of the track.

War Pigs is Black Sabbath to me.... Not only a killer of a start, but Ozzy has a clarity to his voice that is only matched by the clarity of the message. Add in some insane drumming and guitar riffs..... Perfect song.

Sitting in 1970 Junior High School Social Studies class as 12 year old kids, our daily assignment was to watch Walter Cronkite on the nightly news tell us how many American 18 year old boys had been killed that day in Vietnam that day, write it down, and report it in class the next day. War Pigs was our theme song. We'd look at each other and think, "Man, I hope I'm not one of the numbers future classes report in class a few years from now." I lucked out. The draft ended before I was 18. My Cousin wasn't. He went over on a tour, saw too much, came back and shot himself.

Actually,, Black Sabbath & Led Zeppelin are considered to be "The Founding Fathers" of hard rock/metal music.
Children of the Grave is another masterpiece with a relevant message. I think you'd love it.
I know other people have mentioned it but the live in Paris 1970 and it is really great so I just thought I would echo that sentiment 😊 They hadn’t even recorded it yet so the lyrics are a bit different but same message. Bill Ward is amazing on drums. Glad you did the studio version first.

My personal Diary I wrote the next day after the last show of Randy Rhoads in Knoxville Tennessee! RIP RANDY! YOU ARE SORELY MISSED!
OZZY OSBOURNE: THURSDAY MARCH 18TH 1982: RANDY RHOADS LAST SHOW AT THE KNOXVILLE CIVIC COLISEUM: DIARY OF A MADMAN TOUR:
Upon entering the coliseum after buying my tour shirt and ticket 🎫 stub processing: I noticed the stage was set up like a medieval castle with arches and bats 🦇 flying around the top of them. There was a staircase leading up to Tommy Aldridge’s Drumkit. The top left of Tommy was where Donny Airey’s keyboards were set up. Stage right and left had to cages with which Randy Rhoads would appear from the floor stage right and Rudy Sarzo stage left. OZZY had a throne of which he would appear out of to start the show to Over the Mountain. Tommy had his drum tech dressed as an Executioner stand beside his kit with his arms crossed. The staircase had a small section that would open and a small dwarf named: Ronnie (after Ronnie James Dio the new singer for Black Sabbath-replacing OZZY) and hand OZZY towels and water between songs. Little did we all know that later in the show: the executioner would bring the dwarf out to be hung from the rafters and later he would cut off his head using a guillotine! At the end of the show OZZY climbed onto a giant mechanical hand that OZZY stood on top of and launched unspecified meat 🥩 🍖 into the audience! Of course it was all an a theatrical act as the dwarf appeared to take a bow with OZZY and the band. When OZZY smiled we noticed he put vampire 🧛♀️ teeth in! We laughed hard! I went to the show with my friend Richard and his older brother Greg who was 18 at the time. We were 13. Greatest show on earth! Richard and I were both terrified and thrilled at what we witnessed! Unfortunately the next morning all that excitement and energy was gone as we learned that Randy Rhoads perished in a plane crash in Florida. Richard and I played drums but Greg played guitar 🎸 and he definitely took it the hardest! One of the greatest guitarist of our generation and had just won the new guitarist of the year by Guitar Player magazine. Rest In Peace Randy Rhoads your music lives on!

Personally, I almost always prefer the studio version of songs. It's nice to hear a different slant on a great song, but usually the studio is where a band will sculpt the sound into something approaching what's in their heads. That's the ideal, anyways. Loving your reactions, guys❤

Good point but early Sabbath was a bit different, didn't sculpt their first 2 albums, they were pretty close to live.
I agree. The live versions are often hard to understand and sometimes the audience sings parts instead of the band, which can be hard to get the lyrics. First time listening to a song should be studio version.
However, also, unfortunately, this video, much like a lot of early videos, had nothing to do with the lyrics. It was great cinematic artistry, but it was telling a completely different story to the song.
...me too.But there are exceptions...Ozzy has a live album called "Speak of the Devil", that has an excellent version of Warpigs...all songs are excellent on this album, released after Randy died , and before Jake Lee, featuring Brad Gillis from Night Ranger

This song was released more than 50 years ago, but it still has a strong message today. I grew up in the 70's listening to Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin, Judas Priest, Deep Purple etc and I still love the heavy riffs they produced to this day 🤘

Do the Paris 1970 live version. Be prepared thou, because the lyrics is based on an earlier version. So they aren't the same as it is on the studio recording. Doesn't matter much, because it's a electrifying performance anyway. Especially by drummer Bill Ward, beating on the drums with the thick end of his sticks.

The visuals in this are just as important as the lyrics and music.
The squeaking you hear during guitar solos are metal thimbles are the fingertips of Tony Iommi. He had a sheet metal accident at a young age and cut off the tips of two of his string fingers inventing metal thimbles to extend his fingers to play.
Bands like Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple, Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, and Motorhead were the forerunners and Godfathers of heavy metal music back in the late '60's thru the mid '70's. 🤘✌️

Their hometown in England was a dark & gloomy place to grow up. Nothing but factory jobs, buildings partially damaged from WWII,That had a lot of effects on their lyrics
Great original audio, that was the way to go BUT not with the fan made video that is just a distraction. Don't feel bad, others do it too. Back to this amazing song, it is Ikonic and always relevant. My favorite live is than doing it at the California Jam 1974. Incredible set in front of 250,000 who were also there to see Deep Purple and ELP amongst others. Great sets by everyone there, it was amazing to see it live, simulcast on the radio in stereo and out my 100 watt per channel speakers! Those were the days, great music was the norm, you need to do Sabbath's first 6 albums, those are right there with Led Zeppelin for best 6 albums to start a career. They influenced every heavy band that came after. They were as good live as in the studio, saw them 13 times. Seeing Ozzy & Tony Iommi at point blank range is something I'll never forget. Yeah, first time i saw the vid , i was gobsmacked and thought it so cool, but now i realize it really doersnt have much in common with the song and it'sjust a big distraction like u say , as reactors try to follow the "story" in the vid and not experience the brilliant , scathing lyrics and superb music of the song.

The end of the video in which the bloody blindfold is carried up by the wind , after the girl let it go (and presumably being murdered too for her brave and humble act of defiance), can be interpreted as the blood of the innocents crying out for justice and being taken by God who is going after the higher-ups. Don't you agree?

I'm glad you guys enjoyed this song. One of the most underrated aspect of Black Sabbath is the duo of bassist Geezer Butler and drummer Bill Ward. Without these two powerhouse Sabbath's sound wouldn't be the same. They are regarded by many musicians as one of the best rhythm pair in Rock and Metal that ever performed together.

Totally agree. I find myself listening to the rhythm section of Sabbath more than Tony Iommi, yet both are top notch. I love this song, but it always makes me chuckle that Ozzy rhymes “Masses” and “Masses”.
Lead guitarist Toni Iommi, lost his finger tips in an industrial accident before they went full time. He moulded new finger tips using very hot plastic that he found at his home! That is on the hand that he uses to play!

Randy Rhoads the guitarist on this died at 25 and was a classical trained guitarist. One of the best guitarist but died in plane crash
You guys are doing it exactly right! The fact that you listen to the original studio recording of a song before listening to any live versions sets you guys apart from the pack and makes you guys that much better. I wish every reaction channel did it the same way as you guys, but unfortunately, a lot of those channels listen to the loud few in the crowd who are pushing the live videos instead of the quiet majority who love exactly the way you're doing it. I don't want to see you guys react to anything live without hearing the original version first. Please don't change, and keep up the great reactions!

I think the album cost 9.99 at my local music store in 1970.
And i had it on vinyl, and 8 track, but never a cassette tape.

Welcome to early Sabbath! And you guys are 100% right in wanting to do the studio versions first having never heard the song. I can never understand people pushing for live versions first, it’s rare that would be a good idea. Case in point, Zeppelins live MSG version of stairway to heaven is iconic for sure, but if you’ve never heard the song to not hear the brilliant studio version first is pure sacrilege lol!
The last part of the song with the guitar is the END COMING! It feels really like the end is coming.. Epic ending!

Yes, studio versions first always. Good choice Then live later. A lot of first time listeners to songs make that mistake and regret it. I just wish you had listened to a version that had no video at all. Anyway, nice reaction.
There is a video of a live version in Paris. It's intense. That was in 1970! In Ozzie's intro. to the song, he tells the audience, "this is a new song called "War Pigs" (paraphrased). It was the height of the Vietnam War, but from what I read about the song, and this beautiful video it's really about what the UK went through during WWII. Sabbath are the OG's of Metal. I was 9 when this came out. The 60's and 70's, for many teenagers, were just one decade!

And by the way, I also prefer studio versions of the songs. Keep doing them, you are on the right track! Studio versions should always be listened to on the first listen. Live music is easier to appreciate once you know the song.

HA!!! Loved the “stank face” during the solos. Ozzy’s singing definitely evolved over the various albums they did. His early vocals ( Ironman, for example ) were kinda rudimentary. Love watching your journey into the music that I grew up with. I am of a certain “vintage” that still gets chills when I hear air raid sirens.
Can’t wait until you make your way to “Mr. Crowley” live (WAAAY more mind blowing than the studio version). Loved the vid. Keep at it.

This is one of drummer Bill Ward's best songs. The drum fills on them toms are phenomenal. Also more great guitar riffs from the master Tony Iommi. This song appeared on the Paranoid album from 1970 too.

The first time I went to a concert was Feb 1971 to see Grand Funk Railroad at The Forum. We never heard of the opening act which was Black Sabbath. Needless to say we immediately bought the Paranoid album and wore it out every day for weeks. To our surprise we soon discovered their debut album Black Sabbath and you must react to the title track "Black Sabbath". On the Paranoid album I recommend "Fairies Wear Boots" and "Hand of Doom". I'm glad you have chosen to check out the studio version of these songs before going to the live versions.
This is the song that turned me into a metalhead. I heard this song in 1974, I was eight years old. From that point on metal has been my main music. I was fortunate enough to grow up in a period where music was great. I listen to and love most music. Metal, rock, blues, soul, jazz, oldies(50s music) and classical music. But metal is just a different beast. The meanings to so many of the songs, the talent of the musicians, are just on another level. “ Day of judgment God is calling, on their knees the war pigs crawling, begging mercies for their sins, Satan laughing spread his wings,” my favorite part of this song. It’s fun to see younger people react to and enjoy the music that basically kept me alive. You two are fun to watch, keep up with the great reactions to some great music🤘🤘🤘🤘🤙🤙🤙🤙👏👏👏👏👏👏
