Yes, definitely the first metal band. Granted bands in the late 60’s were playing louder and heavier than before, Sabbath had all the ingredients to be considered what we call metal today.
Imagine being a 15 year old French kid going to a club in 1970 and hearing Black Sabbath live back in the day .. mind freaking blown! The sound quality is also amazing dang.. no iphones needed. I know you did tanglewood Chicago.. about the same time .. man I'd love a time machine for sure. Thanks mate.. one of the great anti-war songs of all time and live is even better than studio!
I was first introduced to Black Sabbath in 1970. A school mate of mine told me of a group that their first song on their first album started out with a thunderstorm and it was called Black Sabbath. As soon as I could I went to our local record shop to get a copy. Well ... they were out but they had the next album ... Paranoid. I was disappointed but thought ... what the hell ... so I bought it. When I dropped the needle on that first track ... War Pigs ... and heard that intro riff I was hooked. I had finally found music that spoke to me. Sadly .. I never got a chance to see them live but been with them ever since that first hit. Oh ... BTW. I'm glad that you didn't pick the gawd awful fan made video that's floating around UA-cam to watch.
I have another one for you. You may have probably heard/seen this LIVE version.... maybe. but check out. SANTANA- "Soul Sacrifice" LIVE at Woodstock. Story is...they thought they had more time until their set, so they were sampling some of the product,,, They got called up early to do their set, HIGH AF, Carlos Santana, lead guitar said "The Guitar felt like a SNAKE in his arms" He was Hallucinating so hard. The Drummer was STONED AF, beating on the drums as well. Great performance. I am glad that you enjoyed the LIVE version of War Pigs. Also, glad that you grew up listening to it. I just recently discovered it. All those stories in the 70's & 80's of Black Sabbath being Satanic....must have shielded me from them.
I think majority of the metal community/bands in the world will agree that Black Sabbath are the Fathers of Heavy Metal Even though Toni denied it for many years and use to say "Black Sabbath we are just a heavy rock band" he eventaully concided when everyone else was like "no dude you are the creator of heavy metal" 😂😂 I mean the dude got the top of his finger crushed in a factory accident then created heavy/dark riffs there's nothing more metal than that!!! 🤘🖤🖤
Toni Iommi did an interview saying : I don't even know why they call us a heavy metal band or where the term came from. We're just a rock n roll band.- if you listen to their early stuff they started off as a blues band getting their influences by CREAM & Hendrix. And they were first called " EARTH " before changing the name.
Much better than the studio version granddad of metal for sure they blew me away in my teens a totally different sound for that time and they all killed it in this performance
Having gone to see Black Sabith in 1974, I would tend to agree. Then in the summer of 1976, Blue Öyster Cult was hot. After this came the Black & Blue tour and I was in all the way. I saw Oxxy before Randall Rhodes, the guitarist died, and then the first show back on the road. He is a performer!
This entire concert is worth watching in your spare time. ❤❤❤

Mr WARD holding his sticks backwards. The sound and vision quality of this clip is amazing.
Oh my god, I love Bill Ward. Love this live performance. 💕
Lucky to see them live ❤❤❤
I saw Black Sabbath 1977 and in 1983 Ozzy Osbourne 💥💯🤘
Detuned strings on an SG, tri tone chords, darker sound, revolutionary heavy destortion peddle. Yeah, Black Sabbath is where metal got started.

And remember this was LIVE!!!!!
Yep. They were the first proper metal band, but they included elements of jazz and blues , which just made them really interesting...

I missed this by 7 years but yeah...feckin great live...Purple and Zepp deserve the same level of respect...the trio
Absolutely the first heavy metal band by a long shot. Awesome!!!!!
LETS GO!!!!!
Bill Ward is the most brutal jazz dummer of all time
Think of them doing this in the "Peace & Love" hippie generation. They were absolutely transformational. My favorite band of all time, bar none.
The bass line is crazy good .. wish they'd had a little more volume on that but holy crap what a performance
Excellent review Sir.
Thanks for sharing music I enjoy.
Loved your reaction!
Saw they 17 times. Last one 2016 MSG. New York
I saw them in El Paso in ‘75. I lived in Alamogordo. Took us along time to get back to the base…..

Saw them many times back in the 70s in local clubs as well as Zepplin and Floyd
Crazy this is 54 years ago
This was a TV show on the BBC i think they played 8 songs

Smashing those drums!
You don't know this version
Most Def -the First Metal Band. BUT -Wolfgang Amadaus Motsart was the First Metal writer.🤣 Great Reaction.🐭
Heavy Metal is what happens when Classical Music discovers Electricity.
You can say Cream, Blue Cheer, The Kinks etc ... were proto Metal but every Metal band became a Metal band after listening to Sabbath.
