"Bass hasn't even entered yet." (2:10)
Yeah, we've been saying that about the entire album for the last thirty-five or so years. 😆
Thanks to good ‘ol Lars 😀
Yeah. Jason got a raw deal on this album.
@@karlbecker8775 Hey, at least the backup vocals are present lol
Man, I miss Cliff.
😂 So true. There are good “Justice for Jason” vids on YT, though.
Thanks for making the decision to share this. Crying during this song is nothing to be embarrassed about. It means you’re an emotionally functional human and you understand the song.
Some deep dark shit for real!
If a song can make you cry, it means the band did it right.
Truth!
I've listened to this song probably 10,000 times and the music video gets me every single time
Yeah I don't look down on anybody who cries to a song or movie. Good reaction.
“He’s a product of your profession, not mine”
That moment hits every single time. Your reaction is a human one.
The one that gets me is "Help me mother I'm having a nightmare and I can't wake up!"
@@scumdog8365 for me it are: "for democracy any man would give his only begotten son"
and
"he's a product of your profession, not mine...
those always get to me
When the nurse puts the pillow over the guys face to fulfil his wish
@gruntabo1 only for the medical officer to stop her
"Bass hasn't even entered yet". Jason Newsted cries a small tear!
one of the most impactful scenes (that most people miss) is the final one. It shows those at home toasting and singing, moving on with life while the wounded veterans are shuffled into the back room out of site and forgotten about.
This, it is such a sad video, but that ending just makes me angry... The people that start wars are the ones that end up celebrating the victory, but they immediately forget and ignore the people they used up...
The song is a masterpiece. Often people wonder why I listen to metal. People experience hellish things, and metal is the perfect medium to express negative emotions and srotey telling, and in the end it's very cathartic. This song embodies that, You can't do this in a pop song,
Robert's got a quick hand
He'll look around the room, but won't tell you his plan
He's got a rolled cigarette
Hanging out his mouth, he's a cowboy kid, yeah
He found a six-shooter gun
In his dad's closet, and with a box of fun things
I don't even know what
But he's coming for you, yeah, he's coming for you
All the other kids with the pumped up kicks
You better run, better run, outrun my gun
All the other kids with the pumped up kicks
You better run, better run faster than my bullet
(okay okay, very singular and specific counter examples aside you are certainly not wrong)
@@Fraxxxi to be fair, that's not really a pop song
You need new friends if people wonder why you like this music lol
Metal to me is music that gets you moving and ellicts reactions.
I remember when this video came out, I had been in the Marines about a year. This hit us all pretty hard. It still hits hard to this day. NEVER FORGOTTEN USMC
Hoo Rah Army brother here!
Navy brother at your service. It hits hard.
Semper Fi from an Air Force Brother. I can only imagine the stress of combat. Thank you and all combat vets for your sacrifice. I was stationed in Germany when this came out and prepping our F-15s to go to the Middle East.

Universal Truths can wreck even the toughest man at any given time, goodness is in almost all of us at some level, Life is hard, for the military it's not even in their own hands, Respect
The film footage is from a movie called Johhy Get Your Gun, it is one of the most depressing movies you will ever see and at the same time I feel is is vitally important. I feel like everyone should see it at least once. this song is powerful in itself, combined with the film clips it is a masterpiece, thank you for leaving in your raw emotion.
knowing i may come off as a poindexter, gotta say that the relatively short story is well worth the read. the visials of the movie add something, but reading it first made it creepy since it makes your imagination run wild.
Metallica actually bought the rights to this film (it’s actually “Johnny Got His Gun”) specifically to make this video.
The movie is absolutely disturbing. Even the clips in the video give me the creeps
I've never been a Metallica fan. It seems they're fake in some way, all for show (and album sales).
@@guytansbariva2295 I first saw them live in 1990 . They are very real .
This song is exhibit A that metal isn't just screaming & noise. There can be very powerful messages in metal that you can't really get in other genres
well actually metal has often powerfull messages and it always takes a metal band to make a deep deep deep deep ballad
Have this record in my collection...,, try some simmilar from Germany :"Null positiv - wo Rauch ist, ist auch Feuer" (strong female voice,,, about tragic of War, too)
Exhibit B: "Disposable Heros" ... possibly their greatest song.
'Its so clean. The bass hasn't even entered yet.'
The whole album in two sentences 😂
I have always loved this song. I saw them perform it live at the Grammy awards in 1988. It was one of the most powerful moments I’ve ever seen on live tv. They were clearly nervous at the start, but by the end they just went for it and got a standing ovation. I remember seeing tears in the audience and thinking “Wow, people are starting to get it, metal will finally the credit it deserves.” Then Jethro Tull won the metal Grammy.
There is definitely a point in that performance when James shakes the nerves and goes full throttle....and then yes, jethro wins.
Clips from the 1971 movie "Jonny got his gun" after a 1939 novel by the same name. metallica bought the rights to the movie to avoid having to pay royalties each time their video was shown on MTV.
This song fills me with survivors guilt ! I passed away on the operating table soon to be 9 years ago . Yet somehow , someway they got me back . I laid unresponsive for almost 10 minutes , then I remember opening my eyes . I couldn’t see to well do to double vision , and I remember hearing all of the surgical staff yelling oh my god we got Chris back. I can’t believe we got him , thank god , he is back !
I remember every last detail and my brain plays it over and over again , every last moment of it !
That is very traumatic. I'm glad you're here to tell the story. ❤
When Griffin Dunne’s character says, “…over and over again… ‘Kill Me.’” and his voice cracks the tiniest bit…
Gets me every time 😭
Thanks for including the footage of your feeling getting to you😞🙏
It's not Griffin Dunne but Bruce Watson instead, Dunne was not in the movie.
@@sebastienlavoie9334 Thanks for that. He could play his brother in a film, though, for sure.
I never noticed that before, thanks for pointing that out. It is emotional.
If this DOESN'T move you to tears, you're dead inside. It is a beautiful song, wonderful storytelling and I say kudos to you sir for showing the emotion. It's a terrifying situation to think about, and MetallicA are SO good at telling the stories of horrifying situations. You have a new subscriber, I loved this.
Yes the first time but I listened to this song every day for 5 years it was part of my 3 cd mix along with master of puppets hit the lights and whisky in a jar and some KoRn ,rob zombie ,bone thugs and harmony and a few others
I must be dead inside.. James has stated that he wrote the song about the movie and the character in the movie and how f'd up that would be if it was a real situation.. Very deep and meaningful, but to make such a pathetic statement like you have just because some people have better control over their emotions than you do is just ridiculous! Dead inside? Get over yourself! 🙄
Pathetic. Lol. It's not about control, or lack there of, of your emotions, it's about having some fucking empathy and being in touch with said emotions. Enjoy being callous and rude to people you don't even know
That's not true. There are millions of people who don't like Metallica or any metal music. They simply don't connect, just like I don't connect with soft rock or modern country music.
@@shufflnshine3097 it's not even about the music, it's the story being told
This was a really moving reaction. Having seen and heard it so many times, it's easy to forget that this song and the video are so impactful and meaningful. Seeing your reaction really brought that back for me. Thank you.
I remember when this debuted on "Headbangers Ball." Afterwords, the host just said, "Wow."
This song is really emotional masterpiece.
I was 17 when One came out in 1988, and being a huge Metallica fan I loved it. I thought the video was cool, but it really didn't have any effect on me. I'm 51 now, and every time I see it I am in floods of tears with the recognition of how incredibly powerful it is.
Thank you so much for sharing your feelings so openly.
I was 14/15 when it came out and I was the same way as you. Now it hits more now I understand it better after all these years!!
It’s amazing how you can leave with a different impact after revisiting something from your youth. I remember growing up listening to this song and many others as a child and simply not grasping the sheer magnitude of their meanings until much later and now listening to some of them can bring me to tears.
With ya🤘🏻
I feel the same way. Brings me back to being a kid watching headbangers ball.
@@jasoneffler9903Adam Curry and Rikki Rachman days bro was an awesome time to be alive and a kid at the same time!!!!
I was 12/13 when this came out. I was going through massive amounts of abuse after being orphaned in 79. I never served in the military but I was tortured as a child and this music and these lyrics made me feel not alone. I could feel pain, hate, sadness, hopelessness, and maybe there was a way out all at the same time.
I am now 47, 2 great kids, an wonderful wife and a great career I love.
Metal did this for me. Thank you for being emotionally open to this music.
This is the entire point of the genre for me. Catharsis and healing.
I won't go into details, but I understand you. Peace.
A powerful song that always brings me close to tears every time I hear it along with ffdp's song wrong side of heaven.
SAME 🥺
Thank you for that heartfelt viewing. After Serving 22 years in the military and being deployed several times to foreign countries wondering if this trip, this month, this day will be the one that the grim reaper visits. Seeing your brothers in arms injured or maimed even killed it burn deep to the core every emotional response imaginable. Please continue with your reactions whether or not you do not seem it right. Please continue. Btw Five Finger Death punch has several videos covering the same sacrifices of our troops.
I'm so glad you kept this in, you've never shied away from being honest and genuine about what the music does to you, which I think I speak for everyone when I say thank you, and I'm honoured you let yourself be so vulnerable with us, this is a REAL reaction to something so powerful, you have a great heart.
Thank you Ken, really.
I first read "Johnny got his gun" in junior high school. Didn't know it was ever a movie until this video came out. The book broke my heart and influenced me deeply. Still haven't had the courage to watch the movie. Metallica used it masterfully and made a very emotional statement.
Hi Ken. Thank you for going through the deep valley of emotions this song can force you down, and making this video. It's comforting to see someone else experiencing some of the same feelings. Hope it doesn't ruin your weekend but make you appreciate it more, like it did me. Best wishes from Norway ;)
Huge props for posting a video showing vulnerability. Can we just celebrate how amazing music is. The emotion it can provoke with a mere 'collection of sounds' is incredible
I'm so glad that you included the footage of your emotions. This is EXACTLY WHY Metallica wrote this song. I've listened to this since it was released in 1988 (I had just turned 13) and have watched dozens of reactions to it. You hit it dead on.
Congratulations my dear, you're a human being, if you don't feel anything with this song, you can't be helped
Ken, please know, the metal community just gave you a collective hug.
When i was a teenager i could watch this wideoclip alright. Being in my late 30's i just cannot do this without crying. Yeah, i just feel it more...
I believe this is the most moving song I've ever heard in my life. When this came out i was blindsided and beside myself. God bless & God speed to all our patriots who have given all.
Lot deeper then I was expecting man. Great reaction. That song is so powerful.
I would love you to do a deep dive on the lyrics of DISPOSABLE HEROES. Another amazing anti war piece
Good for you reacting to it as a vet
Mad props for sharing a more vulnerable side.really glad you included the tough stuff because I am sure it was hard. It is feelings that many have had.
Thanks Ken
Ken, this was one of the best reactions I have seen you do. Thanks for not editing out the pain and realization you went through. This piece proves once again that there are some "metal" bands out there that can create real works of art with genuine meaning.
Ken please dont ever be ashamed to show your emotions. This is what makes us different from animals and shows our human side. Compassion for our fellow man is why we are what we are. We were made in gods image. I enjoyed watching your reaction because it was genuine. I too had a hard time watching this video . I also got emotional how can someone not? The video was done perfectly done. This was a genuine emotion you showed thank you for the realness...
Listen, friend... AMAZING reaction , mein Herr! This song gets to me as well...
This was the first song that ever made me cry, dunno how old I was, maybe like 13-14. I had heard it before but I borrowed the CD and read the lyrics while listening for the first time. It hit me like a ton of bricks. I think that experience made me a more empathic human, it triggered some growth in a young man for sure.
Now I’m crying. Amazing song. It’ll do that to you. You have empathy. Don’t worry, a lot of us do.
WW1 was over 100 years ago now but the absolute horror that those young men faced every day hasn't lost it's potency and it's pieces of art like this that remind us of the price they paid. Great reaction to one of my all time favorite songs
The footage is from one movie only, Johnny Got His Gun, but the film distinguishes between Johnny’s reality and fantasy with black-and-white for the hospital, and color for his dreams and memories. It is a very good movie! Thank you for the video!
The song, the video, and everything about it is a total masterpiece. I can never get through it without crying no matter how many times I watch it. The part that really gets me in the video is that this poor guy can only communicate through morse code by moving his head. Gets me right in the gut. My dad was in WW2 and was in active duty in the Philippines. He and his best friend were running for a trench to jump in, but before they could reach a safe place a grenade came flying their way and killed his best friend. My dad suffered from shrapnel but lived. He had survivors guilt, and always told me that he wished it would have been him. Thank you for deciding to put this on here..
Glad you decided to show the video. Showing emotion to great music is nothing to worry about. Music should make you feel something. I was in the Marines for 10 years. And this song always made me think about what if this happens to my men or myself. There’s definitely fates worse then death. and some of us have had to see it. Live it. Or inflict it. Im glad I found your channel. Always nice seeing people who can relate to music. And feel the words.
USMC 1992 thru 2017... this music is powerful... nuff said
Thank you, my friend. Glad I'm not alone.
Thank you for not sugarcoating your reaction, sharing the raw human emotion this piece evokes. Anyone with a working heart feels it with you.
I love how you stop and really open up about the power of this song, juuuuussst before Kirk Hammets solo that takes it to the moon. This is a great reaction video, thank you.
I only had the album version of it when I was younger, so distracted by the playing it wasn't until seeing the video I realised what was being sung . It hits VERY different as an adult.
Two things: this is the best non-orchestral song ever written, in my humble opinion. And this is a rare case where the video absolutely dwarfs the audio-only version. It is emotional, raw, poetic, historical, and powerful. My #1 “modern” song. Love the reaction.
And yet when you hear the version with the orchestra included it adds so much to it
I AM SO WITH YOU! POWERFUL MASTERPIECE!! 30 Years after I heard and saw the video. I was so distracted with other metal bands but then all of sudden saw this whole video. The academics of this song, A definitely piece of art.... and I am speechelsss. Why didnt't I see this video before for what is what. DUDE! I with you!! PEARL FROM HEAVEN!
Truly, one of the greatest songs ever made, by anyone. Timeless classic for all...
Great song to re-visit and react with Ken. I hope you get a chance to react and comment on Baby Metal's new single "Metal Kingdom". Su-metal's vocals seem to me, very much improved range and I'm looking forward to what a vocal coach/teacher thinks.
This song and it’s music video are a great encapsulation of what metal does best: take a very uncomfortable emotion turn it up to 11, and force you to confront it and start to contend with your feelings about it. It’s a masterpiece.
Most heartfelt reaction I have seen you do yet. Your reaction to Chris Cornell's cover of 'Nothing Compares 2 U' is a close second. Love your work and your honesty. There will only ever be one Ken Lavigne.
Best reaction ever..
Props to whoever edited this video too! Amazing job!
Thank you for releasing this heart felt reaction‘I’m watching this on Poppy Day New Zealand, respect to all fallen soldiers and the ones who return, thank you ❤
I've watched a bunch of people react to this, and it's the people who get upset that seem to understand it best. This song has summoned a few tears, many times.
Tears come from empathy, any empathy, for the kind of tragic situations which aren't only possible, but PROBABLE. Maybe not from a landmine, but from debilitating disease, from neglect, isolation. For most people, the path to death is a slow burn that hollows out your spirit. Only the lucky get a bullet, or get taken out quickly in a car crash. For the rest of us, it's a disgraceful march down a long dark empty hallway.
I think about veterans who slip between the cracks, about the elderly rotting alone with nobody willing to spare them a moment. These are lives, and for each of them it's the only life they get, no do-overs. Just like yours, or like mine. Millions of them. It's overwhelming if you try to think clearly about it, especially knowing that it's likely the future of you and the people you care most about.
So yeah, this song is brutal, but it really grasps that darkness and hopelessness pretty well. The beauty of it is that it makes people feel sorrow for a total stranger. Maybe that has helped people put a bit more effort into the neglected people around us... that's a bit of a comforting thought.
My grandfather always instilled in me two things. 1. "If you want to take a life, start with yourself." and the second was: " There's no hole you've dug that you can't dig your own way out. You are the man with the shovel at the bottom." He was in two world wars and was a participant in the second (and third in some circles, ((continuity war)) But he never held any hatred in his heart. Those two things have gotten me so far. Even he said " You've gone trough more than a man could bare. But you made it."
Love your channel Ken. I don't think I've clicked on a vid faster in my life.
Wow, thanks!
My pleasure. ❤️ from Australia.
It's like the vocals are the desperate pleas, the drum and bass the fast beating hard as breath is held & the guitars the endless pain. He is fully awake but he has no face.
There's something about this song/video combination that brings tears to my eyes every time. It's unbelievably harrowing and real, particularly the "kill me" part always gets me. My favourite music video ever, nothing moves me the same way. Absolutely genius and powerful.
The song and video are based on the 1971 Movie starring Jason Robards as the soldier's dad. The move is an adaptation of Dalton Tumbo's "Johnny Got His Gun" (1938). Trumbo wrote the adaptation and directed the movie. I got my hands on a copy back in 88/89 when this video came out. Read it in like 6 hours. Amazing book. Dark, for sure; but well worth the read. It's on Amazon for like $8.99. Great reaction. Thank you for not editing out the emotional bits. Authenticity is appreciated.
Amazing reaction as always.
Thank you for sharing your reaction. This song is one I seldom revisit, its just so strong
Amazing react, man.
We love u, man.
¡Saludos! 🇲🇽
Thanks for sharing a vulnerable moment
A masterpiece of all our hero's, the progressions are amazing. Stay crazy strong my friend.
Thank you for sharing this vid so much, I am prior enlisted thanks for putting it out
They were so young and so fabulous. Love them today as well.
I subbed to you because this was the realist reaction to this song I have ever seen. Thank you for sharing this.
Greatest reaction. Glad you posted this Ken.
Doesn't matter how many times I watch it, still fight back tears
Big Heart love you Man! Thanks for that React
Loved your review, Ken. You're so good at reviews, regardless of where they take you.
Amazing reaction . Much respect for posting it and showing you're self vulnerable. This song always hits me in the feels.
Excellent and heartfelt take, Ken. Thank you for it.
Great reaction and share Ken... it's such an emotional song on its own, but paired with the video it is hard not to get emotional, especially with all that is going on in the world today and the reminder of those we've lost in so many prior conflicts... this is what brilliant music can do and why it drives me crazy when people try to minimize the impact and value of music... I saw this tour (Queensryche was the opener) and i remember walking out of the venue just drained...
In interviews, the band has stated what they were making was a tribute to our Troops/Soldiers, honoring their sacrifices they make for us all.
Thank you for being yourself and being vulnerable. This is why I watch your videos. Again thank you.
That was the Best reaction video I’ve ever seen!! Thank You for being real.
Everytime I hear this song... 😢🖤
There's not a lot that gets to me but.... The older I get music can bring it out of me. I watch all the reaction videos to this song because I remember how mind blowing this video / song is. I love the genuine reactions to this perfect song / video. I wish I could go back and watch this for the first time all over again. The keep the home fires burning song at the end to me is the creepiest part. It also shows how insane and senseless war as a whole is too.
I'm rambling. Awesome video
I deeply appreciate you deciding to share your moment of vulnerability with us rather than not. It is very courageous and much needed in this world. Many thanks.
Excellent review Ken, thank you.
Thank you Ken, for your intelligent and emotional candor.
Thats so inspiring. 3rd stage.. Thank you
*hugs* Ken and anyone else that needs one
You are a great teacher man, rock on
Well done for holding it together
I can relate to your words about this song... thanks for sharing
That was a very powerful and genuine introspection. Thanks for your thoughts
Awesome review. It’s so nice to hear a review from someone who actually understands the song and feels the emotion.
Thank you for putting this video out. This is indeed how many of us felt growing up, and if we were lucky enough we get this perspective before our lives were thrown away. My brother and I, and many of our friends, joined the military straight out of school, and I can tell you most of us have a very different perspective on things after seeing that side of it.
Powerful, thanks from Finland.
Wonderful reaction, thank you for daring to express emotions like that and share with us! Thank you❤
The raw reactions are the best kind. Always a pleasure to get a taste of your musical knowledge, and now your emotional take on songs.
I love you and I love your channel, Ken. Thank you for sharing yourself with us
Thank you for letting it impact you so profoundly. It gave me the opportunity to explore my own emotions and the impact that the song had on me. Well played.
