I remember developers of Doom Eternal talking about how particular they were with nudging players into the 'fun zone' as they put it, where you're constantly moving, switching weapons, killing enemies in a dozen different ways in each encounter. I guess I didn't realize that design philosophy started way back in Doom 2016.

The actual advantage of quick-swapping against the Marauder is that it reduces the number of _cycles_ it takes to kill him; if you use only SSG it takes about 4 cycles to kill him, while if you use SSG+Ballista it takes about 3 cycles to kill him. He definitely does not "force quick-swapping", you can beat him just fine without quick-swapping it just takes a little longer. The real reason people struggled with the Marauder was instead because his tutorial popup gave misleading information. His tutorial popup tells you that if you get too close he'll shotgun you in the face, but if you get too far he'll throw far-ranged attacks. People thought that meant they had to stay in a "goldilocks zone" somewhere close but not too close to him, which got them killed a lot. What you're actually supposed to do is just run away from him and dodge the far-ranged attacks, while waiting for him to charge in and do his melee attack. As for what gameplay "lesson" the Marauder is meant to teach to the player, it's greater situational awareness and strategic decision-making on the fly. He's not meant to force you to quick-swap, he's meant to force you to _think._ He's there to hammer home that Doom Eternal isn't a game where you can just turn your brain off and mindlessly shoot at everything until they die.

Besides, if his skin was more durable than his Praetor Suit why would he bother with that hunk of junk instead of just running around in his shorts? That's not even rhetorical, genuinely why would he wear armour if he didn't need it?

Of all the things Doom 2016 got absolutely right, this is my favorite. It was an unexpected and totally unneeded detail, but it makes it so much cooler to have the voice reading from the "holy" books of the demons about the fury and destruction you unleashed on them.
When you said Taryn “glory kills” you in the grocery store, I got a mental image of a giant, Amazonian woman glomping her boyfriend in the produce aisle and squealing when he knocks apples off the shelf because they’re free HP.
This upload sure is ahead of schedule. Not that I'm complaining, though! So glad Tarny's playing Doom - it's one of my favorite single player FPS games, and the soundtrack goes so incredibly hard. Now that was a pleasant surprise, waking up to a new Tarny video and watching her tear demon spawn new orifices. Normally it's Sunday teatime for me when a new video drops. I'm not complaining mind you. I played Doom I and II back in the 90's and actually finished both (I rarely finish games it has to be noted). I never got around to buying the latest versions. At 55 i suspect my reaction times would make things overly difficult. Still, watching Tarny is always a joy. ❤😊❤❤😊❤

This is relatable. The game falls under "Favorite games in genres I hate". Twitchy, fast-paced shooters are not my style, so naturally, I had to play DOOM (2016). I tend to be slow and cautious in shooters. Not this time. It took a while to get used to constantly being on the move and fighting aggressively but I'm currently at chapter 12/13. I'm having a blast and replaying all the chapters to sweep for secrets and challenges.

Oh how I love turning the most peaceful and calm people in my life into bloodthirsty, demon-slaying, violence-craving slaughterers of the unholy hordes of hell. That being said, I also believe this video is a great example of how DOOM 2016 and Eternal quite literally force you into how they’re more or less intended to be played, essentially meaning you have to have fun to get far in the game.

You mention that the interact button is the same as the melee button. I choose to see that as lore accurate. I think the Doom Slayer just sees interacting with things as punching them. Sometimes softer than others.
Doom 2016 is legitimately one of the most chaotic and satisfying games of all time. You get these brief moments to catch your breath as you move to the next utterly chaotic and blood soaked battle. And when you realize that Hell is so afraid of you that they created a religion around you, that just pumps you up more.

With boomer shooters now on the menu, I'd like to humbly request that you have Taryn play ULTRAKILL, since it is far and away my favorite of the genre. I will say, it's still in early access so you won't be able to get a finished experience, but I believe what's available is still more than enough to have fun!
IF I MAY, be that guy, there's a somewhat academic school of game design that see the different approach of K&M against Controller as a conceptual "more direct run&gun" versus "more varied field of action", where the more compact nature of the controller allow a comands to be executed with half-a-movement of a finger, while the keyboard requires you to move the entire hand to reach the more distant button. basically, what on keyboard is too may buttons to press in a short time is easier while using a controller. of course, personal perception is what plays into this (and doom is far from a button intensive game), but that's the juice of it, and of part of what goes into designing a game interaction interface thought it was interesting

I was very close to actually start speedrunning the game on ultrahard, or whatever the one life mode was called, but I sucked at games back then so I quickly gave up lol.
I can relate to the shotgun being a most used weapon🙏🏻 The one weapon I barely used and didn’t like was the Rocket Launcher. Disappointing damage considering its a rocket launcher. Only used it at times where I didn’t have any more ammo
Doom was probably my first movement shooter, and because of it I'm now addicted to Titanfall (I have like 1000 hours god help me) and Ultrakill, so hopefully this means more movement shooter content!
