    What if this ship was designed for non humanoid. Like the aquatic or quadropeds. It would be a total different design. A ship like this could land
    In the ocean with the saucer floating on surface.

    Towing a starbase. We know Smaller Starbases are towed, by multiple vessels. This ship could tow a Starbase alone or even act as a temporary starbase to a new colony

      Looks sort of Minbari to me.
      I really like it - it's one of those nutty ones like the Grissom that don't quite make sense but are still the franchise is better for them being in it.
      It's not that big either which make it sort of interesting - I can see odd things like this existing a plenty - just not in combat roles.
      The Undercut grilling in the underneath of the saucer is also rather Discovery like too.
      It doesn't seem to have an obvious captain's yacht though.

      That's something that I have been considering as an answer to some of the Canon weirdness we have seen along with the apparent lack of any other member races contributing to the defensive and exploratory Fleet for the entire Federation.
      It only seems Practical to me that other races do contribute to the fleet either by constructing ships of standard design like the Miranda or Excelsior, or by building ships of their own design that are developed specifically to Starfleet standards for operations compatibility. Or somewhere in the middle where they use the grab bag of established Starfleet tech and components to build something that suits their needs, like say.... a saucer with a single nacelle that starfleet its self would never build.

    • @90lancaster
      @90lancaster 6 років тому +1

      Yep it's something that comes up a lot on this channel - I think Stuart likes the idea as FASA did skirt around that idea.
      But I've been pondering the topic especially since the Enterprise show as it had unique Andorian & Vulcan designs (and a reuse for the Tellarites) so It seems rather unlikely that all of their ships building experience would vanish in a century - even more so when The Jellyfish Starship was build in the late 24th Century period with Vulcan input.
      There is also the mysterious Red Starships in the JJ-verse which are sometimes are understood to be Vulcan ships.
      But when you see something outlandish or unusual - I like to think it's alien influence on the design team.

      @thefearhawk8805 6 років тому +1

      Well if we take a closer look at the msd, what obviously nobody did, what is somekind of dissapointing, it becomes clear what this ships purpose is, and what the fin is for. Its called the "Hubble". And inside the fin there is somekind of unusual, circular structure. So I guess its a science ship with a special sensor device inside the fin.

  • @dansparce

    Honestly, speaking on the point of alien design, I wish more Starfleet ships would break the mold like this. I get why the real life designers want continuity of same basic shapes, but I dont really understand an in-universe reason why the Federation would adopt the name and ship designs of only one member species.
    I think it would have been really interesting in Enterprise if it was Humans who brought the pylon style nacelles, and another species brought the saucer design, and another brought the two-hull design, and another brought phasers, and so on and so on. Really make the ships feel like the best parts of all these people.

    • @GoodOldGamer
      @GoodOldGamer 6 років тому +2

      The dry-dock image shows why most ships share a similar design. You want them to be similar so they fit into every dry-dock of the appropriate size, not just unique ones like this has to have. You want them to have similar modules so they don't need a million unique different parts and such.
      It's the same reason cars, pcs, phones, etc share similar designs. Universal forms means a ship can go to 300 different starbases for repairs vs. 3 across the whole quadrant. (That and in show production reality, you really want ships you can kit-bash easily, lol.)

    • @dansparce
      @dansparce 6 років тому

      idk the dry-dock looks pretty normal to me, its arms just articulate.

      @dansparce 6 років тому +4

      Well then canon has done a terrible job conveying that because it has always appeared to me that Starfleet is the scientific, diplomatic, exploratory, and military arm of the Federation, not Earth or the Human species.

      On Bernd Scneiders site there is a proposal for several hubs in the UFP. The Core which is where everything except Voyager has taken place. The Cygnan/ Denebian which is a couple thousand light years beyond Cardassia. The Rigillian hub which is SE of the klingons and gorn. Antares hub which is actually pretty close only about 500 light years towards the galactic core. Last is the Canopian hub which somehow is on the opposite side of the romulans and klingons from the regular UFP area somehow. I would expect that areas fairly widely separated would develop a different aesthetic. Somewhat like the different flavors of the English speaking, European, colonies.

    @trekyards
    So this class is officially listed as a "transport/tug". After seeing your review and doing a little digging i'm pretty sure that this thing is a transport/tug the same way the defiant is an "escort". What the chariot's design language really screams to me is a starfleet attempt at an armor recovery vehicle (arv).
    The verticality of the design puts a lot of distance between tractor beam emitters, allowing the vessel to grab on to much more of a wreck or piece of debris than a more compact design would allow. this reduces the strain on any particular point, reducing the likelihood of further damage. alternatively widely spaced emitters would allow for the tractoring of multiple pieces of debris with a reduced chance of them colliding while being towed.
    The large number of phaser strips also lend credence to the idea of an arv, as the ship would need to defend itself from cloaked klingon b'rels hiding in the debris or jem'hadar attack ships while salvaging battlefields. likewise the large number of escape pods makes sense as the vessel could be expected to recover survivors from disabled vessels or escape pods from other ships. a separatable saucer also adds to survivablility and further suggests that this class is designed for operation in less than safe areas.
    the oversized deflector would be incredibly useful for clearing space of smaller pieces of debris, something so many phasers with full 360x360 coverage could help with - disintegrating the less valuable pieces to reduce navigational hazards. the beams themselves were probably relatively weak, relying on numbers and continuous fire should a hostile vessel appear.
    the bulbous cargo sections on the saucer are useful for recovering computer cores and other large and valuable pieces of debris, as well as housing a large number of work bees to assist in breaking up wrecks that can't be tractored back to a starbase or chasing down small but valuable bits (like corpses). having a runabout onboard is also an excellent idea as the incredibly tough little ships can enter debris fields to board, or recover personnel from, a wreck without risking the whole ship as unlike work bees or most shuttles a runabout has transporters, tractor beams, and room for a squad of engineers or medics.
    my best guess is that after wolf 359 starfleet was faced with the logistical nightmare of having to salvage the sensitive and valuable components from 39 wrecks whose spaceframes were antiquated trash but had up-to-date computer systems with access codes and all sorts of other things that HAD to be recovered before some cloaked romulan or orion scavenger snuck in there. with nothing suitable in inventory they had to start from scratch, allowing for a unique, purpose-driven design. wouldn't help with wolf, but at least they'd be prepared for next time.
    unlike the defiant that entered development at the same time the chariot actually managed to finish its r&d cycle and was deployed in small numbers because of its "nonmilitary" nature as a transport/tug/rescue vessel.
    these vessels would languish in rear echelon roles until the dominion war, when starfleet started losing ships by the hundreds. fortunately they had a modern, proven, and reasonably well armed design that could be pushed into immediate service. a few of these vessels accompanied every fleet where their advanced debris tracking systems proved equally capable at tracking enemy torpedoes, and their exceptional phaser coverage made them excellent point-defense platforms.
    during battle agressive captains used their tractor beams offensively, draining shields, causing collisions, or just causing general mayhem amongst the enemy. after the battle they performed their intended purpose of recovering survivors, computers, and dilithium crystals, as well as any other materials that couldn't fall into enemy hands or were difficult to replace.
    just my take on this thing. feel free to point out any weak points in my reasoning.

    Hey Mates! Atolm here AKA Chris Reyes...First and foremost Thanks! Thanks a lot for reviewing my old Chariot-Class! I am subscribed to you guys and am a huge fan :)
    ...So you have some questions as per my thought process on the shape, well that's an easy one... Exploration. Pretty much all my Starfleet starships are for exploration. So she's not a tug(but could tow stuff if needed). The whole point of the design was to push the envelope in what we (20th-21st century Trek fans) would consider a starship of their respective races/species. The Commander is fond of saying form follows function...but in reality that is not always the case and definitely not when we become more use to the technology and have access to newer, more exotic materials. If form followed function then cars would not look so different from each other especially if they are trying to achieve the same result (lamborghini, ferrari, bugatti, all are supre-cars but they do not look the same. The same can be said of aircraft as fighters do not look at all the same and yet they are achieving the same goals/roles. Now one could argue that in their basic formulas all cars share similar traits ie 4-wheels an engine etc. but that is not the design part of their respective exteriors. Just like in Trek all federation ships have warp engines, nacelles, a bridge, etc. But that is where the similarities end). The Chariot was designed to change the conversation on starship design. You can see that even buildings like skyscrapers are more and more becoming works of art. Some even spiraling into the sky. This occurs when materials become better to handle the stresses of the physics. In Trek this would be even more evident as not only are the materials supre exotic, but there are hundreds if alien species adding their design philosophies into the mix.
    Now my original sketch is not wholly reproduced by Howard Day's awesome 3D model interpretation of the ship, but on the contrary, the original Chariot sketch was design as more of a Galaxy-class lineage-type of design, while Howard's was much more a Sovereign's type of lineage. I originally envisioned the Chariot's "keel" as full of sensor equipment, and labs. Being on the extreme ventral of the hull these sensors would have a better "field of view" of the sounding area and would be perfect for observing planets when in orbit. The Chariot could also function as a dignitary vessel with the proper interior modifications, and would able host a wide variety of ambassadors "great and small" as well as the more exotic of species.
    I am not sure as to what else to say...lol
    I do know that this was and still is a controversial ship, but if nothing else it is different, and that was the whole point to begin with.
    Oh by the way Captain, and Commander, I can always be reached at Shipmiester666@aol.com
    And keep up the good work mates!

    Josh Spencer was one of the earliest SFB Staff members. He was the creator of the Interstellar Concordium and, through the vast influence that the Star Fleet Universe had on Star Trek, the Xindi of Star Trek Enterprise.
    I'm sure the Black Fleet will give Josh at least a C7... he earned it.

    The big thing pointing down reminds me of the Mon Calamari cruiser with the bridge extended down, as seen in Rogue One. Pretty cool scene with Raddus seeing the battle below his feet. Maybe, just maybe, this ship is for this kind of stuff. Like, if you place a LOT of phasers on the bottom side of the saucer, you can really just hover above ground targets, fire all the guns and watch from a separate battle bridge, where there's no half a ship to block your view. Sounds kinda Section 31-ish. I mean, you can make the main bridge windowless, but this special battle bridge at the bottom just full of glass.

    • @Jack_Stafford
      @Jack_Stafford 6 років тому

      Владимир Кузнецов Vovacat17 agreed, the mon calamari designs really are unique among sci-fi I think, and it does take a bold Commander to put his command Bridge on a stalk where he can Overlook the battlefield, I guess that's not that different than a commander being on a tall tower overlooking a battlefield on Earth as a forward Command Center. As indicated it must really have fortified Shields and maybe even the ability to temporarily survive independently if for some reason somebody manages to penetrate it's support pylon.

    So when I was in the army we had a tank called the Hercules. We did not have many Hercules they where tow tanks if a Abrams broke down. I could see this as a support craft to tow large star ships like the galaxy. So the lower part is to tractor the ship and the engines may be designed to tow a gross weight and not top speed. The internal volume could be there encase the crew of the towed ship needs to leave. Like a radaiton leak or something like that. And I could see the wide deflector design to cover the ship and the tow area both. Anyway just my idea.

    I have been working on this for the Star Trek Adventures RPG, as a survey and long range scout/recon ship. I see that long fin under Engineering as a long, massive and complex sensor array. I have even considered panel that would open open for very long range scans. Maybe even some modular labs that can be put into the lower sections for specific missions.
    So for me, this is the new Oberth-class. Even more so than the Intrepid-class and roughly the same size, it is a dedicated scout and science vessel without the military approach. Built after the Dominion War say, 5-10 years after.

  • @mholm1818
    @mholm1818 6 років тому +13

    You say it's a tug, then talk about it being a scientific ship?? It's pretty obvious, IMO, how it could attach to a variety of modules, large or small at the back. The blocky saucer is for smaller cargo that can be beamed aboard. As a tug, it makes sense why the deflector is so big and the top/bottom nacelle design to build a bubble big enough for cargo modules behind it (which is why the original sketch design isn't as good). Totally a cargo ship that could function on its own or as a kind of "tractor-trailor" set-up. To me, it seems very well thought-out for cargo/hauling. Why the designer didn't include the modules for hauling is beyond me, though. Saucer detachment makes sense as well as it can move smaller cargo to wherever while leaving behind the bulky towed module(s) attached to the secondary hull.

    This is one of my favorite designs to date. Starships dont need to be aerodynamic!
    Size wise it looks like it could be the same size of the Galaxy class but built tall instead of long. It could even be a bit bigger, modeled after experiences with space born life forms.
    Alternatively it could be scaled up even more to be a mobile starbase!
    It could also be designed to have the largest warp bubble possible so that it can tow objects at warp speeds.

    Reminds me of that crazy bomber from the beginning of The Last Jedi. You would think when you are traveling thru space you don't want a large forward area exposed to avoid impacts from objects that could damage the ship. Most Trek ships have a low cross section to allow gas, dust, and small objects to flow around the ship.

"Humans have a long and sleek aesthetic, but the Rigellian spirituality concepts are so pervasive that they have developed a vertical aesthetic to a lot of their designs. As it's supposed to be a 'tug' ship maybe it's designed to project a larger warp bubble to drag larger ships through warp? that's why the nacelles are placed there - it could fit onto the front of a larger ship and warp it back to dock. Can't see why a tug would need it's own lifepods unless it's a tow from active battlefield design. A usual tug would just be covered by the spacedock to evac.

    Yo, it's about saucer separation. The bottom fin allows for more crew etc. - and a more functional "ship" after separation. Rather than a huge tube or squashed cylinder shape, they have something with a fair volume and high maneuverability and presumably high warp speeds. Possibly easier to shield because it is like 1/3 the total space to shield and still contains a runabout, full warp, and the deflector. Exactly what you need to kick ass on separation. Look at the Prometheus middle separation portion but turn the hull 90°.

    I like it as a temporary Star-base. Federation flies this thing in there and uses as an administration hub and logistics base while they build a proper star-base for the sector. Scale this ship up to a Galaxy Class size and it's a winner. To fit with the temporary Star-base idea, I would actually move the saucer more to the rear and center it even further over its warp nacelles instead of doing what you guys suggested of putting the saucer more forward. Good video, thank you.

    It could work maybe as some kind of science vessel. Everything from the deflector dish down could be specialized areas: isolated labs and sensors. The further away from the engineering level the more sensitive areas (maybe with individual level ejection if need be). The detail of the top needs work :).

    The chariot class looks an ideal rescue ship.
    Looks like it's a tug big enough it could possibly pull more than one ship at a time. Possibly one at close range then one a bit further behind.
    It also looks big enough to hold rescued crews etc.
    That's how I've always seen this awesome design any way.

    I love this design. It was originally created by my friend Chris 'Atolm' Reyes whom I sadly haven't see or spoken to in some years. He is an amazing artist and designer and this is just one example, albeit a great one.

      I am surprised it has been labeled a 'Transport/Tug'. That's not how Chris described it to me. He told me it was intended to be an Explorer, in the vein of the Galaxy Class. The shape proves this. The components do indeed serve clear purposes. The lower, vertical, fin or blade shaped section is some kind of extended sensor array. The array contains an observation deck (one of two on the vessel). I also remember him saying that there are additional laboratories, meetings rooms, and such for Science, Diplomatic, and other First Contact related missions (sort of like the Luna Class). That's all I remember. It's been a while.

    It has a heavy duty size warp nacelles, the section that sticks down at the bottom is for docking with large cargo containers. This is for large transport of cargo from minerals mines, colony, outpost. This size of cargo ship allows for family space, and general personnel transportation. A federation needs supplies distributed over light years.

      Being a tug, I can see the "sail" and saucer bulge as rooms for damaged ship crews or med bays. Also the sail could be to keep damaged ships/dangerous cargo away from the vital systems.
      I haven't finished the episode, so they could have mentioned that.

    you could call it unique, only issue is the saucier. do they come off an assembly line? designed an unusual ship then sticks on a regular main. odd. Also it was mentioned that it was a tug/ puller, yet it has tiny impulse. If i was guessing just from the image (which i am) i'd call it a funeral hearse for VIP's

    Hello. I love your Series very much. It helps me understand the technology and ships of the various franchises. This ship looks like it could be Star Wars. The bottom fin makes the ship look like a flying missile platform. Or even a ship that is meant to fly to a planet and provide a weapons platform that flies around. I can see this ship able to go in atmosphere to provide defense of land forces as well. This ship could provide defense for spacedocks as well. This is just what I think this design would be great for. A flying weapons platform for defense.

    If it's a tug or mobile dry dock, the entire bottom part could be temporary living quarters for the crew of whatever they are working on. This would necessitate that the ship be fairly large, however; it would need pretty substantial maintenance bays and room for not only its own crew and workers but it would have to be able to house the crew of the ship being worked on as well.

    • @arikbord2256

    I think the Chariot Class evolved during the TMP era. It is built to what I would call a Rigelian aesthetic. The ship was more of a carrier with a thru deck hangar, and the "stem" always was kind of problematic. This version has the sovreign warp pods instead of the TMP nacelles which is what I remember.

    Honestly, the ship looks like it would be a deployable disaster relief station that's meant to go from one planet to the next and aid in recovery from natural disasters on a longer-term basis than say a medical frigate. The lower spine could be either a hospital or construction space for larger items like mass replicators while the upper spine could fabricate smaller goods and the saucer would be administration/CNC for regional or planetary recovery efforts. The upper section could also serve as a mobile academy to train first responders at a locality.

    I agree with the tug/cargo hauler idea. With the heavy phaser array it could be sent into a 'unstable' situation and haul out a Galaxy class ship, and with its large armament as a member of the crew of the rescued ship I'd be pleased to see it arrive.
    Looks like it could have a large science/lab module attached and be sent on deep missions with good defensive capabilities.

    First time I've seen the Chariot and I like it. It doesn't make sense as a tug, unless tugs require a giant crew (though I suppose it could take on passengers if you think of colonies being weeks or months away rather than the mere days of post-TOS shows). The beluga head on the top of the ship has to go, and I'd use a more conventional looking deflector dish. It has more than a passing resemblance to a B-wing, with some SW hospital ship to flavour. If a tug, I'd make the nacelles larger, more utilitarian looking.

  • @therealshadow99

    While not the designer... I get the impression that it's meant to have some sort of cargo container plug into the back lower hull. What I think this design actually needs is that cargo container plugged into it to make it look better. That would give it more 'length' and that might fix the flow of the design.

    looking at the deck diagram and its description as a tug. i would sumise its whole lay out is for towing large ships at warp speed. with the purle thing in the bottom fin as some kind of warp field stabilizer / enhancer.
    so if a ship like a Galaxy is heavily damaged in a fight, poped its warp core it can be towed at speed to a star base or ship yards. to be repaired. the separation would probably be used for crew safety if the ship thay were in a volatile state / drag something from a nebula ect, or any persevered situation were they would not want a lot of crew in the lower hull.

  • @cathyvickers9063
    @cathyvickers9063 6 років тому +1

    I like the design aesthetic! The rear indent of the fin suggests to me that that's where cargo hulls can be attached-- it even looks like there's a large door in the recess, which would allow personnel to move between ship & cargo module.
    I like the idea that this's an alien-built ship...perhaps an adaption of the kind of starships the race built for themselves...
    Obviously, I wrote this before the cutaway.
    While on the topic of exotic craft, I always wondered what a ship would be like with the bridge on the BOTTOM! The top deck bridge is a design holdover from naval vessels on the ocean. On a world with no oceans, "ships" may have been dirigibles, & it'd be logical to THOSE designers to have the bridge always on the bottom!
    What do you think?

  • @johnlmcgary
    @johnlmcgary 6 років тому

    This is a maintenance/ tug/ rescue ship equipped with enough worker bees to service 6 galaxy class starship at the same time and a unique tractor system that allows the towing of a starship at high warp. Along with the advanced tractor system and maintenance bees, it also has an advanced hollow-matrix that can assist with maintenance and seal hull breaches, you can think of this ship as a mobile maintenance starbase. (This entire review was made up with no factual data at all but it is as good a purpose for the ship as any).

    Repulsion and attraction of kinetic energy is better served from points of reference that arefurther apart. This design makes perfect sense for a tug-like ship. Tractor beam from two points far apart would be more effective with less energy needed with the tractor points far apart. Infact a dorsal fin protruding out of the top would make an even more effective tug with a tractor beam anchor point even further from a tractor beam on the lower fin.
