The commissioning of the new Odyssey class demonstrated how long in tooth the Sovereign ships were beginning to be. The Regent class is more of a refit for the Sovereign space frame than a true new class. The new nacelles from the very fast Prometheus added speed and maneuverability, while a new secondary hull added space and heaver structure to support new ablative armor and the necessary under plating for structural integrity. The new ablative armor allowed for more windows without sacrificing protection and increased crew comfort.
It has such a big planetary sensor dome so it can perform orbital bombardment at a level that most ships can't in terms of super high sensor resolution, interference mitigation, and sub surface scanning
The Regent looks like a testbed for a lot of the Odyssey's initial features: The impulse engines in the pylons, the hollow neck that would become a split-neck, etc.
I'd love for you guys to cover ships from older, maybe less well-known games. The D'dredar class from Birth of the Federation comes to mind, or maybe some of the special ships from the Armada games (of which you've covered a few, I know, just not the special science ships).
Every STO ship has multiple skins. Each skin changes the look of the hull material and the number AND size or shape of the windows. Thus if you pick the right skin you can almost eliminate the windows.
I'm completely unfamiliar with the background or context of this ship so I'm glad to see this episode. I think it is very elegant and powerful looking at the same time. I'm also a big fan of the excelsior for the same reasons! I like big sleek ships that venture a bit away from established Starship norms. Even if sometimes that tends to make them look a bit cruise- shippy.: )
I kinda think that the Sov class is more of a combat starship and the Regent class is more of a sov refit towards a luxury starship. -The Regents deflector is round from the front view yet its on an angled surface so it would look egg shaped from this vantage point.
I like the refit idea for the USS Regent herself, it makes sense as during the USS Enterprise NCC-1701's Refit they took off everything and put on new ones on the ship
Just look at the naming convention. Sovereign into Regent class is pretty thematic. Maybe it's based on the refit of a different sovereign class the USS Regent (It would make sense for a Sovereign class to be named Regent). After the refit it would still be a sovereign refit until the new class goes into production, in which case it would be rechristened the first of it's new class.
Pomai Kajiyama especially since we know at the monarchy is still around since in Star Trek Into Darkness the British flag is shown all over London and had the Royal Children's Hospital but no other country's flag or government has ever been shown unless it was something from the past or found in space. God Save the Queen! ;)
I was hoping they would touch on the Archon class as well. That being the next evolution of the Sovereign. The Regent being a Tier 5 (previously top tier) while the Archon went to Tier 6. Although I really don't like the Archon itself. It has what I feel are utterly stupid nacelles.
Applique armor belt have been applied, it looks like..... It ends up a little bigger because it would be a "Worfed up" Sovreign..... Big bones and thickened skin with redundant systems added, that is why it has been bulked up. The tactical ships tend to have those forward swept nacelles and a more compact build. An MMA body posture rather than a sprawled on the couch look. You can see they armor thickness around the bussards on the nacelles and the overhangs on the edge of the saucer. The thickness of the warp struts, that lead into the thick structure connecting the saucer into the secondary hull. There large hanger doors giving generous access to scramble a whole squadron in one launch if one is embarked. The personnel of the fighter wings are typically housed in the thick spinal structure between the struts and the saucer. Data analysis from the Dominion war has indicated that there was a typical 20% survival rate of crew who had abandonded ship. This resulted in installing fewer and larger, sturdier escape pods near the passenger areas of the ship. Most of the crew were tactical branch who had a mindset that favored going down with the ship.
Looks like they took a sovereign frame, stretched the tail and saucer length-ways a good bit (10m or more each?) and the width just a little, then wrapped it up in a smoother skin. Ooh and they stretched the belly forwards and filled the underside of the tail in, very nice. She's sure as heck got some sexy lines from the side. I like the buttressing, it shields the shuttle-bays from attack somewhat, And along with the bay force-fields, you could have an extra one over the whole area. Ooh, I just had another thought, could you imagine if that whole belly section could drop off (solves the escape pod problem, lol!) and be switched out for a fighter hanger version?
For me, the swept back nacelles invoke the feeling of speed, and forward swept nacelles invoke a feeling of maneuverability. Aerodynamically, that would actually be the case.
The only problem in space is that aerodynamic is of no importance so a Borg cube or an aerodynamic shaped Starfleet spaceship would make no difference.
Ah the Resolute-class. As a big fan of the Excelsior I felt the Resolute was a real missed opportunity, both in design and BOFF layout. What's the big specialty of the Excelsior in STO? Transwarp drive! So why not give this cruiser a distinctly different look (e.g. blue bussards like the Bellerophon, or something a bit more like the Kelvin-timeline Excelsior deisgns doing the rounds) to say 'hey, this ship has a slightly different propulsion system as standard'. Make it a proper fast-response cruiser. Despite that, hopefully its original Excelsior model will get the new Type 8 skin and Type 6 windows that are on the gorgeous new Miranda model.
the Escape pod and windows depend on what setting u use for the ship, usualy theres 4-5 diff window types, and every type comes with diff escape pod pattern, also the Deflector changes based on what color u use for the overall skin
Speaking of the WizzKids Vizer class varient of the Sovreign. That varient is now featured in the ingame Mudds market section of the ingame C-Store in case u never heard.
I no longer use the majority of the Regent parts in game, But I do still use the nacelles on the newer Archon Intel assault cruiser class. The Archon is much closer to the Sovereign design overall but has fugly nacelles. Using the regent nacelles redeems the one failing part of what is otherwise a much better looking Sovereign retrofit.
20:07 Given how Starfleet ships are mostly designed to look sleek and futuristic that is hardly a surprise. 21:45 What do you think of an ablative armour "door" sliding over that section to cover it during combat? 23:45 My only wish for those torpedo tubes would be to add doors which could slide open during combat sort of like Andrew Probert had intended for the Enterprise-refit.
The [Console - Universal - Metreon Gas Canisters] is rather useless, it is basically the same as the skill 'Aceton Beam', but then with a longer timer on it. I however do not own the other 2 parts of that set, the [Console - Universal - Metreon Gas Warhead Launcher] and [Console - Universal - Metreon Gas Phase Cloaking Device, so I can not really tell what would happen if you would complete the set. The [Wide Angle Quantum Torpedo Launcher [Acc] [Arc] [CrtH]] however is a great asset! Having that in your rear will get you some extra defense, specially because many ships don't have that many aft weapon slots. So ripping this torpedo launcher off for any other ship will work to your advantage actually! I can really recommend it to people who don't have so many ships and want a little extra power to their arsenal. Making the ship T5-U will give you a additional engineering console slot, which makes the count 5 engineering slots. It however could use a extra science console slot instead because it only has 2 of those. It makes the ship very heavy on engineering with a clear weakness in the science department. If you have this ship, the best way to go is full tank mode or find another solution to get your shields up but not recommended. The hull color is just a different material, while the original uses (in the game) material 5, the refit uses material 6. So I think that the new material may be a test of some kind or a more advanced material? I don't know, but it does look interesting. The escape pods are different sizes, variants and versions. This is most likely related to what the ship's crew compliment is and what it's mission will be. The longer the mission the bigger the escape pods would need to be, you never know when the crew needs to use them. But also the size of the ship needs to be taken in to account, you can fit huge escape pods on a tiny ship, but what good would that do? Or visa versa?
Enterprise-F - 2409 and the Enterprise-E was lost with all hands in 2398 with Captain Data, against the Undine. In this the history is in the game. In this the Regent class is awesome, but I'd like to see them go to non C-store ships with the three factions in the game.
If you were in during the first couple of years of the game, when the loading screens were not the percentage screen. It told you of the history, and but now it is stated that the Enterprise-E was lost in combat to the Undine. You play the Undine special missions you get to see that they destroyed the small task force where Memory Alpha was before they moved it. Now you have to find the history of the game within the game. The only ship that was on a show is the USS Voyager, the rest have been replaced.
lnlraven079 Thanks. I've been in game since Season 3 (so about a year after launch) and remember some of the messages but didn't know about the Undine special mission message. Apologies, and thanks for the heads up! :-)
Dean Lewis given how thin that recess is looking at the side view I don't think you'd lose that much and unless your skimming the hull in a small ship there isn't that much of a blindspot and if your that close in all the regent would have to do is roll a few degrees or make a sudden pull up and ram it given that the sovereign and presumably regent are not that cumbersome considering what we know of the enterprise e
Why come no Federation ship's escape pods are ever upgraded after 200 years of ship design? I mean, you would think that they would upgrade from escape pods to escape warp capable shuttle/fighters. Didn't they learn anything from the Dominion War when they were shot down so easily?
For Starfleet ships what is the difference between a battle cruiser and assault cruiser? I have also seen attack cruisers and I assume that is basically similar to a battle cruiser, just a different name?
I always see comments on Trekyards videos where people complain they can't understand Cmd. Cockings because he talks too fast and has an English accent. I find I'm the opposite in that Captain Foley sometimes mumbles. Love the series though!
No offense but that bulb on the bottom is stupid built, why is it so big and bright, it needs a skeleton frame and to be dulled a bit. It makes the ship look smallish to me. but the ship does look good.
Post Voyager (post First Contact, really) ships are all just turning into the same ship. It's not particularly healthy for the setting. Once you establish that future = flat, round and pointed, you can't go back from that. TMP designs typically are the most highly rated, yet if you make something that's more reminiscent of those designs, it gets labeled as "not looking modern enough," even if it's a good design. Needs to stop.
My issue is rather that a lot of these ships that were not designed for the movies or a series hero ship is that in the quest for variation of a theme that is familiar, there have just been so many variations that it blurrs together and it also becomes harder and harder to uphold the principle of "form follows function" (both internally and externally seen in-world or from beyond the fourth wall). From little things such as the phaser strips that first appeared on the Enterprise-D covering pretty much the entire three-dimensional space around it and that being visible and recognizable to the spectator to the First Contact Enterprise aiming to be a more cinematic looking ship for the big screen justifying its elongated, high-contrast design having its form follow the function of drama, I feel a lot of these newer, added ships were just added for the sake of adding things. Which makes sense for an MMO, I guess, but it does dillute the impact of the overall designs in my eyes as well. Also HI PLAGUE, didnt expect to see you here. But then again, I am not truly surprised either.
I honestly don't like it. The planetary dome is just damn big. Where are the phasers? Needs more lifeboats. The only couple things that I like are the double photon tubes and the impulse engines in the nacelle struts.
The newer regint assault cruiser looks awesome an smooth an technologically way more advanced , when will they design an star ship other THE BIG J to come even close to a romulan detrex war bird , I'm sure these awesome artist can make one of these beautys that big an I think voyager would have been even better in size as of the THE ENTERPRISE E or D even . Just saying guys .
I hope you review the Archon class I'd love to see you guys lose your damn minds over the ridiculous Tonka Toys looking nacelles they put on that thing.
If Regent Class could have different Nacelle style and more silver paint would look awesome and better that Soveregin class...and still prefer more than Odyssey class.
I’d love for some of these STO ships to be in future tv shows and movies.
And then Picard granted your wish, and everyone bitched about it
@@cptsteele91 actually no when they did put ships from Star Trek online there was a relatively positive reception to those ships appearing
I love the Assault Cruiser ships.
Sovereign, Regent, Noble, Imperial, all of them
EmpyreanFrost Productions Dude the Imperial is ugly as hell

You know the nacelles are for warp only and has nothing to do maneuverability in impulse battle speed, right?
Those Saucer shuttlebays are HUGE! They're tall enough to fit a Lambda Class shuttle!
I love these vids, especially seeing the scale compared to other ships. Thanks!
God Bless your dedication fellas we LOVE you!
great video guys. I use this ship in sto. Thanks for the review.
same I call mine the USS Journey
It has such a big planetary sensor dome so it can perform orbital bombardment at a level that most ships can't in terms of super high sensor resolution, interference mitigation, and sub surface scanning
Another great video. Thank you guys for putting in the time and hard work to bring us these videos. Really appreciate your insight on the ships.
It is very sovereignesque. It's a cool design.
The Regent looks like a testbed for a lot of the Odyssey's initial features: The impulse engines in the pylons, the hollow neck that would become a split-neck, etc.
The smaller deflector makes sense for a ship designed for battle. A smaller deflector makes it a harder target.
I love the white and black paint scheme, and I particularly love the warp nacelles.
I'd love for you guys to cover ships from older, maybe less well-known games. The D'dredar class from Birth of the Federation comes to mind, or maybe some of the special ships from the Armada games (of which you've covered a few, I know, just not the special science ships).

the regent class is cost 2,500 zen on the c-store.
I like how all early 25th century ships have the same black and white look.
I'm completely unfamiliar with the background or context of this ship so I'm glad to see this episode.
I think it is very elegant and powerful looking at the same time. I'm also a big fan of the excelsior for the same reasons! I like big sleek ships that venture a bit away from established Starship norms.

I like the Regent. I looks much more balanced and planned out.
Escape pods!? Screw that. Ramming speed!
The E has ears. Like a Germain Shephard
puppy just got his ears fixed
Love the design of the Regent Class. Very smooth, yet militaristic.
I never got the cut out at the back bottom of the secondary hull. This one looks good.
maybe using a transporter design that beams the torpedoes closer to their targe.....maybe

From the top, the aft of the secondary hull kind of looks like the NCX-2701.
I was hoping they would touch on the Archon class as well. That being the next evolution of the Sovereign. The Regent being a Tier 5 (previously top tier) while the Archon went to Tier 6. Although I really don't like the Archon itself. It has what I feel are utterly stupid nacelles.

That's one big impulse crystal.

TalesOfWar, precisely.

Meaning it is indeed just the feel or look of speed.
Planetary Assault Ship makes it sound like that 4.5 kilometer Jem'Hadar ship.
the back half of the ship from the top view where the pylons meet the body looks a lot like the TOS Romulan bird of prey.
Metreon Gas = Riker Maneuver
Next sto ship pleas do the resolute class

The Term is Head canon for something that you consider so close to the orginal theme and such that it could fit into Canon seemlessly
20:07 Given how Starfleet ships are mostly designed to look sleek and futuristic that is hardly a surprise.

The best thing you can do in STO is take the Regent nacelles and put them on a Sovereign... everything else about the Regent is terrible.
in some places , its very JJ prise , in the nacels ,
Nice video, Archon class next please :)
I kinda like those nacelles, but the bussards kind of look like little tongues sticking out.
It's a Sovereign variant
"assult"
Nice.
Enterprise-F - 2409 and the Enterprise-E was lost with all hands in 2398 with Captain Data, against the Undine. In this the history is in the game. In this the Regent class is awesome, but I'd like to see them go to non C-store ships with the three factions in the game.

Where are the Phaser strips
*Where are the Phaser strips*
*WHERE ARE THE PHASER STRIPS*
*_HEY JERRY!_*
>waves
the side has a 25th century JJprise feel
Please oh Please do the Sutherland Class. it's a very interesting upgrade of the Nebula
Where are the phasers?
In the black areas on the hull? I didn't see any visible phaser strips.
Dean Lewis near as I can tell on the black plating between the windows and escape pod hatches, at least for the topside ones
I doubt they would place a phaser in an area lower than the surrounding surface (kills the firing arcs).
Dean Lewis now having got to the front view shown anything the broadsides can't reach the front phasers probably could at that sort of position.
The Regent came out before the Vesta i think
Why come no Federation ship's escape pods are ever upgraded after 200 years of ship design? I mean, you would think that they would upgrade from escape pods to escape warp capable shuttle/fighters. Didn't they learn anything from the Dominion War when they were shot down so easily?

Assult? Must be Riker's ship.
Great, theres a window fro a view screen on the discovery ship, kill me now
Have yall seen the Orville Trailer?
i like the Avenger class T6 Battlecruiser, smaller, more maneuverable, and can take a punch better than the assault cruusers.

Eli, stop looking at ships and go back to drawing more M'Ress.
But really, hearing you, Matt, and Pat talk more about Trek gives me life.
I honestly don't like it. The planetary dome is just damn big. Where are the phasers? Needs more lifeboats. The only couple things that I like are the double photon tubes and the impulse engines in the nacelle struts.
23:08 the underside doesnt look like it finished......need a redesign....see what you guys come up with.

I really don’t like the curved pylons. Straight edged would make it look better.
This is a very sexy looking assault cruiser.
I love how you will say Star Trek is not about combat and then say a ship looks like an Ocean liner and not enough like a war ship. lol
simple is one word i would use.......bland is another word
Anyone on sto 2020?. X box one.......
those torpeados launches dont look right on this design. i would have had a different type of launches.
I hope you review the Archon class I'd love to see you guys lose your damn minds over the ridiculous Tonka Toys looking nacelles they put on that thing.
