The typhon class is equipped with all necessary kinds of stations including several repair bays and crew quarters and the equivalent of the Galaxy class 10 forward. The typhon class is also heavily armed as well as armored the builders incorporated turrets into the design to open up the hull even further for even more craft and necessary equipment. it has 2 forward and 2 aft torpedo tubes, a total of 12 high power phaser emitter turrets, and some of the heaviest shielding available for it's time. In books there's hints and rumors (non canon) that a fleet of them are being kept hidden and updated with the latest tech as a last chance measure.

The carrier should be the size, if not slightly larger, of the Excalibur class. Take a look at our carriers today, they are the largest vessels we have. They need to carry all the supplies for said pilots and fighters let alone crew. You would need a ton of energy for heavy shielding and massive replicators for parts. Not to mention transporter bays to beam back ejected pilots. This requires multiple warp cores. Also, fighters don't only need pilots. Each craft would have to have it's own engineers and the quarters to house them. At that size, USS Typhon could also house many, many fighters as well as supplies for the fleet itself. It would take on the role of a 'mother ship' protected by it's *hundreds* of fighters, whilst 'father ships/capital ships' like the Excalibur, absorb and dish out as much as they can. In addition to all that, you could also be a warp capable dry dock (that has the power and room) for defiant class ships with enough medical bays and staff for your crew and pilot complement, as well as a large portion of the fleets crew compliment. If smaller ships in the fleet meet their demise, they could aim their escape pods at the USS Typhon's massive hangar bays. I know you've worked out the scale, but it is way, way to small in my mind. When I think of carrier, I think of massive.

Lets not forget, the scale of the ship has already been set and you guys are right on. As i remember, in the first cinematic, Typhon was ferried in by Enterprise E. Wonderful game!!

OK guys...both Samuel and myself both thought it was the Typhoon class not the Typhon class, that why we mispronounce it through the episode. Samuel had done up the renders and we just jumped into the Mission Briefing. If it had been a fully research regular episode that would have been caught. Sorry for the confusion!!

While I agree, there´s no way this isn´t TAC focused rather than SCI focused like the Jupiter was. I´d be great if they made this into a regular C-store ship and added some new fed fighters as both combat pets and shuttlecraft.

You keep bringing up the registry numbers and debating about their use. I remember from Stats class we were talking about registry numbers on tanks and using a statistical trick to figure out how many tanks the enemy had based on the registry numbers visible on the field one is able to estimate total ship strength. I think if I remember correctly the U.S. saw how effective this was in troop resource management that they started using registry numbers that had nothing to do with total number of units produced. basically jumping the numbers up higher than they should be to give the illusion of having more tanks or more ships than were actually existing thus causing enemy generals to hold off offensives due to thinking they did not have enough equipment or troops to win. not sure if this could be a reason for the registry numbers seemingly jumping up or down at random.

Question to commander Cockings. You described the meticulous process of how you worked out the size of Typhoon class carrier (good work, by the way). One of the steps was determining the size of the Valkyrie class fighter. You said that the true size of this fighter differs from all other sources, but you did not say the exact length. So - how big Valkyrie class fighter really is?

This is a ship I'd love to see Eaglemoss tackle (and definitely the fighters, as well).
A few things: I think all the "fortress mode" concept was dumped during development. I don't recall the ship ever pulling modules in or anyone even referencing it. There are two missions where you man a turret instead of piloting a fighter, but I don't think the model did anything special or transformy.
Also, considering it gets deployed to its theater of operations by the Enterprise, I always took that as a sign that it wasn't meant to travel fast or far (or either). It is more ship than station, and it does travel from place to place in the game, but I took that to be on a mostly local scale (because otherwise, why would it need another ship to deploy it).

Star Trek Invasion was in development for NUON DVD players but unfortunately it was canned since the NUON itself didn't take off. Not heard of any code surviving but it would have played like the PS1 build with much improved graphics.

Having played Invasion and watched the reimagined BSG, the Typhon has always felt like Starfleet's Battlestar to me - right down to the Greek name.
I mean, aside from the looks *and* the phaser turrets, Valkyries instead of Vipers, Runabouts instead of Raptors.

It doesn't look like it really belongs in the Federation fleet. But at the same time, that's part of what makes it work. It's a really cool design that adds something new to play with.

The registry number would logically follow the number of ships built but I will agree that number we see on Star Trek do not appear to follow this pattern properly. Each ship having its own number means that it can not be simply based on a design number because that would mean all ship built to a given design would have the same number and they clearly do not. It becomes clear this is simply a spot the writers have chosen to not try for any sort of consistency and maybe they just wish us to get the idea that Star Fleet has a lot of ships. There is a explanation for the high Registry numbers even if it does not explain why so many ships seem to have low numbers with out indication they are reusing the number (such as 1701-A -B -C -D) after high number ships have appeared. You might note that even shuttle get the registry numbers with out any thing to separate their number out from the Capital ships. This means that Star Fleet might have a large number of Shuttle but very few Capital ships. Modern Navies follow the practice of categorizing each type of ship and then giving it a number,( SSN is a Submarine nuclear Fast Attack. SSBN is a Submarine Nuclear Ballistic Missile, CVN is Carrier Aircraft Nuclear, CGN Cruiser Guided missile Nuclear and so forth.)which would have worked in Star Trek except that both Gene Roddenberry and Matt Jeffries came from the Army Air corp which meant they numbered them the way planes get numbered which is based on the country (N for USA) and the Radio call sign. www.faa.gov/licenses_certificates/aircraft_certification/aircraft_registry/aircraft_nnumber_history/

This is super cool... I never played the Playstation game, so was completely unfamiliar with this until pictures started showing up on the Trekyards Facebook awhile back. The question I have is this- how exactly do the warp engines work? The middle of the ship completely blocks the engines, as far as I can tell. Correct me if I'm wrong but from the front the engines can't be seen at all. I can envision something like the Delta Flyer where they extend outward for warp travel, and hug close to the ship for battle. I know different ships have broken the rules of starship design in various ways... but that's a bit extreme

one thing i love about this ship is how many fighters you can field in STO, you get the two hangers, but with the mastery trait it allows for an additional 6 squads resulting in 36 fighters in space. i went into an elite TFO with it and was holding my own with just the fighters. also the fortress mode firing off all 8 phaser turret cannons is a beautiful sight to see.

I think Voyagers Nacelles can be cranked into place manually and left up if they have to be. But there is some suggestion the internal redirect the plasma into the impulse engines - if they do they if the'd be stuck with thrusters and warp only or thrusters and impluse only.
But it's a matter of detail to argue over I guess.
Also perhaps that carrier has baffled engines which is why they can't be seen usually so it can sneak in then swarm it's target with fighters and slink off again out of weapons range of a counter strike.
Also are Impulse engines not a major was of getting torpedo lock ?
There is also a suggestion that there is a sublight function possible in some warp engines and such ships don't have impulse engines at all - but that they are terrible at rapid movement as a result. (example being something like some Vulcan ships).

    1) Would love to see a version that's closer to the original sketch! Someone get on that.
    2) Am I crazy or would it look even more bad-ass flipped upside-down?
    3) The reduction in length in the "fortress" mode is bananas. As cool as it LOOKS for the whole ship to compress like that, wouldn't it have been more practical to just have sizable blast doors that cover that gap in the middle?

I'm pretty sure in Star Trek : Invasion itself the fighter launch bays were on the side of the ship...
Also, it didn't have phaser strips, but actually had turrets (there were a couple of missions where you took control of one of the turrets)
On a final note, in the cutscene at the start of the game, you also see the Enterprise E dropping off the Typhon on location - and the Typhon is almost the same length as the Sovereign class Enterprise as well.

Nice job detailing this and determining its scale! I know that there might be some disappointment about its scale, but I'm a fan of more reasonably scaled ships. Plus, should remember that in a time of war, the ability to make truly colossal ships would be rather limited, plus the warp technology for a system to get it around about as quickly as other ships. I'm thinking that very large ships larger than the Galaxy class are implied to exist, but that they are non military and slow.

hmm i'd say the huge warp core was needed to not only power the ship but refuel the fighters, possibly even have the power have a larger fabrication facility on board to replicate fighter parts and replace lost craft... and from what I remember of the game, during fortress mode it shows the lack of phaser strips was due to the fact the ship had retractable pulse phaser cannons that extend out of the hull, which are then manned by an officer (I think you man one of the cannons while fighting a borg cube) if you have a dozen such cannon turrets behind panels in the hull... each manned and firing independently within its own arc, the punch it would have...eeeeesh no wonder its called fortress mode, and makes the need for a huge warp core all the more vital.

While the overall size might be correct, given that it only holds 28 fighters, the fan rendering of the deck layout was done by somebody who has no clue of the infrastructure requirements for a 'carrier' class vessel, e.g. servicing, ordinance handling, mission prep, launch - recovery management.
At the minimum, there should be space allocated for three 'double' decks in the central third of the hull for all the above mention tasks.

Why would the Typhoon need escape pods? It has a very large number of fighters and I would assume shuttle craft

Not all Starfleet officers are pilots, presumably. Can you imagine being an engineer and being told, "OK, get in the fighter." Plus a fighter is more likely to be shot down in a battle, rather than ignored like an escape pod.

For every fighter you need an engineer and support crew.

Speaking of which, I hope in some iteration of Star Trek we get to see something like a flight crew (think Chief Tyrol of BSG). The shuttlebay has always seemed too clean to me.

The scale needs to be way larger to accommodate fighter, auxiliary, support craft, equipment and cargo. Then the crew and specialized departments.

Everyone who's called themselves building this ship and 'wrecking' the ship, by 'sticking' two additional warp nacelles on it!

Yeah... No! Looks like they mothballed a naff Husnock ship or a squashed Pralor vessel lol! And the bussard collectors are too close! Where's the deflector? Also if Star Fleet were to build these they would need Transporters to pick up the free floating evacuation team members! Captain made me laugh though with his disappointment with the size of it lol!

It's not Typhoon Class. Typhoon is spelled with two Os. It's Typhon, named after the mythical father of all monsters.

I see ships like this ans want to put the engines on struts in the corners to get line of sight. That would give 4 different "Fields" between the engines.
