    Simply Beautiful! The TMP era ships can't be matched as far as realism and details that really speak to a actual functioning Starship. The Bozeman takes so many other great styling cues and details from that era and arranges them in a slightly different package that is more than the sum of its parts.
    Excellent work everybody!

    I _really_ like this ship in almost every respect. I like that it lacks the bright needless animation that became so prominent in the TNG era which can seem very cartoonish where this seems much more realistic. I also really like the choice they made of where they put the name of the ship prominently on the saucer were the dome rises up and in so many ways I think this ship fits perfectly in the movie era along side the refit Enterprise and the Reliant.
    Going for a much more realistic idea of how a mechanical ship would actually appear in space without the more comic book or cartoonish details that often are seen.
    Although the engines glowed subtly in the motion pictures for the most part the machinery looks and acts just like machinery without the magic animated blobs.
    I think this is a home run hit to fit in the motion picture era.
    I'd like to see more designs along this aesthetic with the rectilinear and sharp edges along with other geometric shapes coming together to make this kind of handsome and "realistically functional" looking ship.

    It looks like the primary and secondary hulls are definitely designed to separate.
    Assuming the original drawings this was based on were Excelsior concept art it would be fitted with transwarp drive.
    Depending on the exact separation plane, the primary hull could actually have the warp nacelles, which would be conventional. Leaving the secondary hull to be the transwarp module. Or the secondary hull retains the nacelles with the primary hull detaching, like the Galaxy Class.
    Either way, would suggest that the transwarp module may be regarded to be potentially more unstable than a conventional warp drive. So the primary hull can separate and hightail it out of there in an emergency. Which might explain why the impulse engines are so big.

    When you took a look at the saucer from the top back, it reminded me of the Romulan ship from "Balance of Terror" with stubbier nacelle "wings" and pushed farther back.

      Nope, it was a Soyuz class. A variant of the Miranda. It was trapped in a timeloop for ninety years. Supposedly it was refitted after being released by the Ent-D.

    Very aquatic looking ship. And the way the secondary hull is connected to the primary hull via the nacelle struts is very Oberth Class-like. And the secondary hull looks like one of the sleek shuttles from TNG, but cut off. And yeah, it looks better upside down.

    I really like the high nacelle variant of the Miranda class. You can do that in Starship Creator and it looks awesome. Making the rollbar pod a deflector array makes more sense to me and looks good too.

  • @DSas2300

  • @My-Name-Isnt-Important
    @My-Name-Isnt-Important 7 років тому +1

    It looks like a ship that is between TMP era, and TNG. Sort of various advancements trying to be integrated into the vessel. I guess an experimental test-bed vessel. Not meant for mass production, but instead trying to test out new systems. Similar to NASAs X-31 EFM.

  • @PatriciaCross
    @PatriciaCross 6 років тому +1

    I dig it. The Miranda is one of my favorite ships.
    As a modular design, I can see the nacelles being flippable as well. Yank the pylons out and swap them the other way and reattach the nacelles (so they are not upside down, so that is mostly an aesthetic choice) so you can put the weapon or sensor pods on the top like the Reliant. Larger pods and you put the nacelles on top and the pod on the bottom. Use it as a carrier like this seems to be. Though that pod really does look a lot better on top. If the Kelvin films move into the movie era timeframe and bring in those designs and such, I hope they are paying attention here.
    I am quite happy imagining all the movie era designs really look like this, even the Enterprise.

  • @zagartolagonda
    @zagartolagonda 7 років тому +2

    I think that secondary hull would look much better the other way around, or flipped over and spun around so the shuttle bay was facing forwards, while maintaining the classic 'boat' style hull shape

  • @positronicfeed

    This is a concept for the Excelsior as far as I know. It's from the production of Search for Spock. I think they must have gone with the more "Enterprisish" look in the end because it was supposed to be the hero ship at the end of that film. I really think this would have been better. Or any of the other three concepts they had for it. One of them is kicking around on the net as the USS Xavier and it looks good.

    • @lykan2
      @lykan2 6 років тому +1

      As far as I'm aware it was originally supposed to, but was changed to another Constitution Class because i think the reception for the Excelsior wasn't that good (I do like the Enterprise-B version more) I even think they make fun of that fact in Star Trek IV in the End.

    This fan design for the Bozeman is pretty cool, I agree that the secondary hull is very strange looking, maybe if they had kit bashed the Oberth secondary hull and treated it a shuttle bay or carrier bay for fighters. Would fill the roll of a carrier type for TMP era very well since they didn't really have any carriers.

    The Art Deco feel of the refit, with the Oberth with an Exelsior-ish shape of the nacelles

  • @alynicholls3230
    @alynicholls3230 6 років тому

    i always figured that since the bozeman was actually only 20 years old, it travelled to the future, they adapted it and kept it in service as a museum ship, taking guests on cruises around local space, either that or captain bateson was given command of the new bozeman.
    the bozeman was orbiting earth when the enterprise arrived in first contact, the bozeman and another ship was ordered to fall back, the captain of the bozeman replied "acknowledged", and if you watch the film and turn up the audio its obvious the voice is kelsey grammer, i rekon there is a cut scene relating to that.

    Like CA Foley, I picked up on the Oberth/Connie refit fusion aspect of the nacelles; in contrast to him I quite like them as is. I hope other fans adopt the nacelles for their designs. CA Foley & I regain accord on the secondary hull. There is, for example, a fanart movie-era Intrepid/Voyager precursor (NCC 2465) that these nacelles would improve, over the Oberth nacelles the OP used. I know, he was just following the Voyager's designer lead in making the nacelles too dinky...still, a mistake...

    As far as the secondary hull thingy..... I feel this design looks great without it, and the secondary hull is a mission specific add on to the core vessel. Would like to see a series of concept drawings of this vessel without any secondary and thing with a wide range of different secondary hulls. Would make this vessel similar in concept to the US Army HEMMT truck chassis with its mission specific modules

  • @TexasCat99
    @TexasCat99 6 років тому

    Really like most of what this ship looks like. The primary hull is different from the 1701 (refit) with more slope and the curves that the Reliant didn't have. And still easy to resolve the problem with the horrible 2nd hull (always foolish to use a transporter to move between hulls). (1) a small central neck to the 2nd hull. (2) wider struts on the sides into the 2nd hull = providing two ways to get to the 2nd hull. And of course fixing the bottom to something better.
    Or go with what they did with the Reliant. Get rid of it and sick on a photo torpedo bay onto a roll bar. Personally, wouldn't you rather not have photos shot by your bridge? :)
    Overall it looks good with the engines below... Again, love the saucer section, the back end, etc.. everything looks great.... but that battery-phone cover-looking bottom.

    From the top, very cool looking ship. Totally on board with it. From the bottom, looks like a train wreck to me. The secondary hull just doesn't fit. I think if the primary hull / saucer was inverted, shrink down the secondary hull a bit, I think it would look great. As it stands I would ditch the secondary hull entirely. It would for sure have an updated NX-01 look to it at that point.

  • @evangreen3080

    The impulse engines and shuttle bay door are too big, but I like this. The nacelles/pylons could use a little work too, but I take issue with the secondary hull not being "Star Trek" enough. You mean it's not enough of a kit-bash? It's not trying to be a tacked-on deflector dish section but instead be its own different thing.
    Going from the first pic, I'd have preferred the secondary hull were directly merged with the primary hull, but seeing that dome (bridge?) on the secondary hull in later pics, it looks almost like a planetary drop-ship? I can see huge ground vehicles or cargo exiting that big door.

    It's funny, having seen that concept art two years ago myself, I tried my hand at making this design as well. Unfortunately, all the problems you gents brought up with the aesthetic were the ones I couldn't resolve to my own satisfaction when converting it into 3d. I guess Mr. Huffman just bit the bullet and did the best he could with minimal alteration to the original. More power to him, eh?

    The engines were recognizable as Excelsior's right off the bat. I think it needs at least a small neck connecting the primary and secondary hull's. Those engine struts are not meant for major crew movement. Otherwise I could see this as between TOS movies and TNG series.

    so did the designer forget to add the deflector/s or do they too not know the difference between shields and deflectors

    Well that was disappointing. I thought this was going to be talking about the USS Bozeman, the ship that appeared in Cause and Effect in TNG and was mentioned several times in later episodes and movies.

    I thought the Bozeman was Soyuz class?

    From the top this would have been a great aesthetic for the new movies. That bottom pod really throws me off though, like what does the slit in the leading edge really look like, also is there even enough space in the pylons for a turbo lift to reach the secondary hull? It does not look like there is, so it runs into the Oberth issue. Delete that pod and I think the design works perfectly.
