I'm used to Toronto pricing and whenever I see your apartment cost breakdowns in Tokyo I always am surprised at how not-crazy-expensive it is and I think it's cheaper than Toronto. I grew up hearing how expensive Tokyo was but I think it's more affordable than many other massive cities. You guys are right, the food (good food) is so cheap there vs every time I go to Toronto I get sticker shock at any eatery.
My understanding is that in the 80's Tokyo was super expensive due to the exchange rate at that time, I had always been under the same assumption, but was wrong haha. -E
In addition, no tipping in restaurants or anywhere else required!!
It depends where you live. Rent in Ginza is more than double anywhere in Toronto. Toronto is a small city compared to Tokyo, there are just more deals available in a city so large.

Compared to Nyc this place is a steal! It would easily be 2500 monthly, and that’s being very very modest and not in the actual city.
I always toy with the idea of relocating to Tokyo. And this just made it so much more appealing

Golden Balls looks happy to inside as well! I think the cost is great for the convenience and location! I am in rural TN, and I would gladly pay those prices to have the convenience you have. I have to drive 45 minutes to the nearest Walmart and the food choices are of course not as varied or delicious! Thank you for sharing!

Ireland's in a housing crisis right now so rents are insanely stupid and make no sense, but really, I don't think your place is too much. More than I could afford since I'm not working fulltime, and I'm sure I'd have a smaller place if I ever move to Japan to teach (which is on my list of potential things to do) but yeah, for your location and proximity to transport and so on I think it's pretty normal to possibly on the cheaper side, especially for Tokyo. That's a pretty decent sized place and aside from having had to buy or bring furniture and so on it seems to have a lot of amenities! I like it, and I was happy to see GoldenBalls! I was kinda worried he might have gotten broken or lost or something since I hadn't seen him in awhile xD I love the idea of the friendsigns on the wall, but dang, how do you guys live with that lack of color? Need to get you some floral wall art or something. (No you don't, I'm just big on focal points. Don't mind me lol)
Thanks for the image of the floor plan. I decided to use it to practice sounding out katakana as I'm trying to get a bit back into my Japanese studying. What does it say on the far left of the floor plan in that long stretch of space? I can read " rukoni" but i'm not sure of what is before the "ru" part.
you guys really got a awesome place to live! for reference, I live in a 34m2 apartment that offers the bare minimum and the kitchen is like 40 years old but it`s in the center of zurich (switzerland) and I pay 1350CHF per month with a deposit of 2600 CHF (swiss franc and us dollar are pretty much 1:1). to be honest I also got very lucky to even get a place in the center since it is very difficult to get a nice apartment here. anyway enjoy the holidays, much love to you guys =)

The kitchen is small but overall a really nice pad. That out door space is killer. There should be some cool night views. Also huge thumbs up on the Primus shirt .

During the cost breakdown, I was wondering about your total monthly expenses, like with utilities, transportation, average food spending, etc. but I see in the comments a lot of other people asked about that too. Looking forward to that video! (I'm also curious about the first month or two costs for things like setting up your place with all the appliances and little bits you would need. We have been here just visiting for 2 months and had to go out and get things like a bath mat, hangers, and a few storage containers.)
We're from the Toronto area so I think rent and stuff is comparable, if not a bit cheaper in Tokyo, when you factor in other costs of living. We live in a house an hour-ish outside of Toronto and pay about the same for our mortgage but also have a car and none of the conveniences of living in a big city. Right downtown though, you cannot find anything decent for less than $2000-2500 anymore.
Other random thoughts:
That faucet extension thing would be great for filling bottles or jugs that otherwise have to be tilted sideways to fit in a shallow sink.
The door magnet catch reminds me of the cabinets that were so popular in the 80s with no handles on the outside so you had to push them in for them to release. Ahhhh, natsukashii.
GOLDEN BALLS!! 😄 We bought a similar tanuki to take back with us - I've always wanted one. Ours doesn't have a name yet though. We'll have to get him situated at home in Canada and get to know him before we properly name him.

Great tour! Appreciate the cost breakdown. Comparable apt here in NYC is around $3000. Moving to Tokyo end of January. Rented a temporary furnished apt near Okachimachi Sta. while we look for permanent 2LDK place. Can't wait to get there!

Kyde was right; her introduction was super cute! Heh. Also, renting in Seattle is super expensive, around $1,500 on the low end at roughly the same size as yours. We currently rent a house(1500sq feet) further out(about 30 miles out) for around $1,500, though. Anyways for what you're getting, I feel it's a good deal, especially without those ridiculous fees.

that price seems expensive at first glance, but it's actually very reasonable when everything is taken into consideration :
- per person cost
- location
- distance to public transport
- view (as a photographer, i'd sit out on the balcony all day long & just take photos)

Nice tour, thank you! 16:50 You're right, looking down (or looking up for that matter) onto the monitor isn't good. But your laptop seems to be just on the height-adjustable desk, so you either have a good typing position and you have to look down, or you have a good viewing position and you can't type. So i'd get one of those notebook stands which puts the display on eye level (or put it on a stack of books etc.), and then put a seperate keyboard and mouse in front of it.
Until very recently I had the monitor and arm on my desk which worked well, may do the same thing again soon, just need to budget in the costs.
Chicago- My friend paid $1200 a month for what you have twenty years ago. I’d say for a major city you are killing it.

When we visited Tokyo, we were at the shrine across the river from you and I was looking over at the buildings on your side of the river and I would never have thought you could live there for that price. I thought it would be much more expensive. I think you got a great deal considering all the conveniences of living there ie: great transportation system, cheap food, and actually living in Tokyo. The one thing about living over there is downsizing to the norm of size standards. I would have a hard time doing that but I have an almost 2800 sq ft house and I really like my space :)
I think it's a great price, especially for the location! I also think this UR ahousing has adopted an "american" style of dealing with apartments. At least in my area of California, it seems like they are aiming at what we would call "low income" with the types of leases offered. Also with the child credits.
I love the apartment, and think it's an awesome concept, that is definitely solving many housing issues.
I love that door locking mechanism! Our bathroom door always swings halfway shut after you ooen it, and I always walk into it on my way out :( TBH I liked your Tokyo apartment a little better because it seemed to have more light, but the new kitchen has so much more storage!
To be clear, both are in Tokyo! That apartment was nice with light though, you are right. It had a lot of other issues, however. -E

Hello, I am a Japanese living in Boston. I am so jealous. The smallest good studio in Boston/Cambridge is about 500 sqft and rent is about $2700. Those old three-decker houses that look nice in the Scorsese movie are cheaper (studio $1600), but the wall/ceiling is paper thin, you hear footsteps, conversation, TV sound from next door every minute in addition to rodent problem. The quality of life here is lower than any city in Japan I can think of. You can find $1300 studio in suburb, but commuting takes 3 hour/day and car related expense costs $700/month. You can find the cheaper one in Dorchester but it’s so dangerous that you can't even walk one block at night. I miss Japan.

You guys have a beautiful apartment and considering where you're living it seems surprisingly reasonable. I'd be hard pressed to find similar prices for 1 bedroom apts around me and I live in a dumpy post-industrial metro area in the midwest. Admittedly you'd get probably twice the square footage for the price but on balance I'd rather be living in a place like Tokyo lol! This was neat to see; thank you for showing us around!

Considering my rent in the states - I live in like a smallish city - is about 800$ and I had to pay first and last months rent plus deposit, honestly 1300$/month to live in Tokyo is insanely cheap to me! I was paying about 1100$/month at my last apartment in a different state in a city with only 20,000 people. I've lived all over America and 1300$/month to live in Tokyo to me is insanely fair. Wow I am in shock! I might be moving to Japan in a few months so this was a really helpful video overall. Thank you for making it! :D
About appartment, one thing that needs to be said is there is a huge difference between private owners (like if your dad owns a building with X number of appartment versus corporate owned building like the one Eric and Kyde are in.
In general, private owners will charge you everything they can (legaly) as high as they can. Because hey! "free" money!
Where with corporate owned building, they want to fill the whole place asap which translate into easier, faster and usually cheaper prices.
Also, as soon as you are outside of the main Tokyo area, prices start to drop fast.
I'll take my example as living in a Leopalace21 owned building. Im 15-20 minutes out of Ikebukuro, in straight line (few stations to do depending if i take an express or semi-express train to get there) and been that "far" from Tokyo mean they have trouble filling the whole building. There is 20 appartment here, at most 10 have people in them.
This is a 1 Room appartment, with a small kitchen and normal bath area. Between 20 and 25 m² depending on the building.
When i showed up to the company with my realtor agent (i dont speak japanese, all paperwork is in japanese), they told me if i signed for 8 months they would give me 1 month free of rent. 12 months and it would be 2 month free rent.
Since it's a corporate owned building, i only had 2 different "move-in" fee. No key money, no deposit, no lock exchange, no guarantor.
In the end, the move in cost was 120 000 yens. Since i signed for 1 year, they gave me 2 month free rent.
My rent : 72 000 (including internet).
Total cost of the appartment for 1 year : 840 000 yens. (Kyde and Eric will pay 1 736 700 for one year, but double size, so it's logic)
Im pretty happy with my situation :)
My work pay my transportation fee to Tokyo Station, so it's perfect! Takes me between 50 and 60 minutes to get there.
Edit : They also have the ~100$ gift if you recommend someone to move in with Leopalace!

25:44 You could see if you could slide some plywood under the cushions. I have fixed an old couch that way. The plywood distributes the weight on the springs under the cushions so you don't sink so deep. Yeah its a little stiff but if you don't like sitting in a hole, it might just do the trick. (I had the hardware store people cut it down to the size I wanted. I have a little coping saw that I could shape it with too but a rectangle worked for the couch I had.)

Seems pretty legit! I'm out West in Tachikawa paying 140,000/mo for a brand new (2016~) 1LDK, but your location is pretty excellent and that price is super reasonable, especially with the refurbishments to kitchen, etc that it looks like UR did before you moved in.
Plus, you've got a giant golden poo to look at whenever you're feeling down. Can't be beat.

I think that’s a great price for living in Tokyo! Much cheaper then I thought and your apartment is very cute for the two of you. I wonder what this building charges for a 2 bed unit. Also the fact that you don’t have a car payment and those expenses makes it so much more worth it.
For your kitchen. Find something that covers your sink. I have made a wooden cover for my sink when I didn’t have enough counter space.

the washing machine noise that sounds like a scream seems to be from the solenoid switch that controls the pressure from the hot or cold water input, usually the cold, seeing that the pressure is more and so kills the switch prematurely.... hopefully there’s stock and some repair support
Have you considered a piece of hardboard under the couch cushions. It may support you more and stop the sinking into a hole feeling 😁

1200 inside the city while being a walking distance away from a station is unimanigable here in Calgary, even more so for bigger cities like Toronto. Most you can find around Calgary is 1500+
The monthly fee is not that expensive, I lived in Poland and was paying a similar price for a flat in the city center.
What I do think is expensive is the amount of fees, damn that's a lot.

20:17 Immense is a strong word for that tiny space =) i know Japan makes great rice cookers but maybe should think of replacing one with an electric pressure cooker, still make rice perfect but also you can do "all in one pot" dishes super easy and i bet you could make a mean curry in it also.

For Tokyo, YOU GOT A DEAL! You found the loophole. Congrats and LIVE THERE AS LONG AS POSSIBLE. The terms sound similar to rent controlled apartments in various cities in the world. People hold onto these forever, as in they are passed down by generations. Maybe it's time to have a kid in order to get that rent reduction? :P

I have a pretty good deal on rent: no deposit and £270 per month for an apartment (flat UK) with two large bedrooms, a big kitchen, a large living room and a utlity room. I also have separate gared drying area the size of a medium garden. I get free bus transport anywhere in the country (England). Can you recommend a small rice cooker? Thanks again for showing us around you very tidy apartment.

Well since you so insidiously did not include Australian Dollarydoos here's the cost breakdown for the other 4 Australians watching: $1720 for fist months rent, $61 Mantenance. $1781 per month and $3440 Deposit totalling in at $7002. Though the total in Yen I got was 528,000, and the 393,700 Yen figure you have would equal $5221 AUD , but I definitely didn't calculate it in the same way you did, not sure what happened there. Regardless, as somebody living in Melbourne I'd say that's a pretty sweet value, I think you'll likely not find anything in the city proper for that price over here, might even be a stretch to find something on the inner suburbs for that kind of price too.
Edit: I figured out where I went wrong, I added the monthly rent to the total cost as well!

5 minute walk to a station in the middle of Tokyo, that's a fantastic price. PLUS you don't have to go through the whole guarantor hassle. AND a balcony! Great find!

We feel safe everywhere in Japan. This is however, the most comfortable by far. -E

From California, a pretty expensive state. But I'm up north close to Oregon. $1200/$1300 would get you a 3 bedroom/2 bath house. But, in a major city like Tokyo, I would have expected to pay more. So, I think it's a pretty good deal.

I'm in NYC. For $1200 here you might find a small studio in an okay neighborhood if you really hunt around, but for most people $1200 means you have roommates.

I'd say that's a pretty decent price for a place as big and nice as Tokyo from my impression of NYC! I pay a bit less for a decent sized rowhouse in Baltimore, but I mostly keep to cheap yet interesting and convenient cities and neighborhoods. LoL, and my bedroom is pretty bare too.....!!D
Wait, you were able to put that bidet on yourself? How did you do that? I've been looking up how to install a bidet in Japanese toilets but have had no luck!
It's just like replacing the seat on any normal toilet plus installing one water tube it comes with to the tank. TOok like 20 min, super easy. -E

Seems very cheap and super convenient! I wonder about energy prices living there too? Me & my partner rent a end-terrace house in Northumberland UK with a large garden and 3 stray cats (one who is constantly sitting with his tongue out- we have named Mr.Derpins) for £400 a month

@30:00 Those are earthquake proof latches on your doors. Prevents injuries and trapping people in rooms when things fall in front/behind them blocking your egress during potential fires following the earthquakes.
