Great stuff!! Sometimes Eric 'gets' Kyde and sometimes Kyde goes right over Eric's 6'7" head. Loved this installment a lot.
I saw the total solar eclipse here in the states in 2017 and it was the single most amazing thing I have ever seen. A partial is very cool but a total is worth driving hundreds of miles to see in my opinion. I still get giddy thinking about it now four years later. My family and went to see it in a national park and we all got horrible cases of chiggers that I still have some scars from, and I'd still do it again in a heartbeat. Absolutely amazing. I'm glad it worked out for you two to see this, even if it was just a partial!

For my study abroad at Ritsumeikan, at the international house, the pillow they gave us were the small beaded pillows. I came to love it, it is weird at first, but then you really get use to it.

I know the Jomon period was a large period of Japanese history- basically the pre-historic part of Japanese history.

What a great video :-), such variety - my favorite were the villages with the beautiful old buildings. My dad had been to Japan in the 1950s And fell in love with the old buildings gardens and japan. His health got bad and when we could of enjoyed going to Japan he couldn't travel. Wish he could have shared in your videos. Thank you for sharing your travels - your giving me visuals to fit my dad's descriptions! And although Eric feels the videos don't do the beauty justice I have to say you sure help warm my heart and show me what a wonderful place you are living and exploring. Arrowroot is made into a starchy powder (like cornstarch), so I think the outside of the "mochi" is the Kuzu (kudzu?) part (in case you guys were still wondering) :) Great video as always!
Yes exactly :) Kuzu is the Japanese name of arrowroot and kuzu-mochi is made from its starchy powder

toyoko inn is great when i dont want to have to think about finding a decent place. they have their own website, and if you get a membership you get a Y500 discount and every 10th night is free. the breakfast is always great too

45:50 that statue COULD be Queen Emeraldas, which seems to be popular in Japan from what I've read but I only recognise her from an old english release DVD that the high school I went to had in it's library. Not sure why my high school had an obscure 80s/90s anime in it's library... but yeah.
The DVD had about 2 or 3 episodes so I dont know if more exist or that's all they made 🤷♂️
Edit: you said where these statues are from like 10 seconds later and I've just checked it out online. She briefly appeared in Galaxy Express 999 but also had her own short series.

Toyoko Inn has an app. if you become a member, you can have a room a couple dollar off every time. If you spent 10 nights, the next 1 night (single room fare) is free (& Toyoko in has many hotels allover Japan. some in Korea, Mongolia, Cambodia, the Philippines, Germany, and France.). If you book a twin or double by using 10 points, you need to pay the difference between single room and twin/double. tho.
I've seen a hawk dive bomb a person while in Kanazawa xD that sign is legit, hold on to your sammiches people (though now I guess I have learned it was a tonbi)

Awsome Manga statues!! Galaxy Express is super old school and famous in the Otaku world! So that's super cool to see outside of major well know Otaku areas. If they just did it for tourists...it probably works. I'd like to see them 😂🤣 I just need like 6 months in Japan to be honest lol.

I though the cheapest booking option for Toyoko Inn is its website. However, Toyoko Inn always includes free breakfast and coffee... So you can save around 1000 yen for that... Is it because of covid they serve breakfast in bento? it used to be buffet style.

Depending on how far you wish to stretch the possibilities in playing your version of the game, you could simply look at that particular plate literally: 40-31 is an equation itself, whose answer is :::drumroll::: 9! Lol, I was actually thinking of this before you mentioned you couldn't find a 9. Now, all that said, I'm not the brightest crayon in the box and y'all certainly know more than I do in many regards, but I kinda wish I was with y'all then so that I could point that out lol. When there's a partial solar eclipse like that you can go into a woodland and everywhere that light hits the ground you can see the shape of the eclipse, it's pretty surreal.

Hey...did you hear people call Fukui "Hoo-koo-ee"? That's how my Kobe-jin BF pronounces it. Also said that area is know for it glasses (frames) production. Foo knew?
I didn't notice it being said that way, but I didn't hear people talking about the prefecture much either, haha. I can see that being a pronunciation that would get used, though.
"Fu" In Japanese is actually closer sound to "hoo". It's kinda of in the middle of the two.
Things called mochi are not always made of rice. For example warabi mochi is made from bracken starch or as you found out, kuzu mochi that is made with the root of kuzu (or japanese arrowroot).
we are doing the same for loose bakery item in supermarket baked goods section in UK now.
They are all individually wrapped after baking before being displayed.

I think this is part of the town has several Akiya Bank owned structures. Several people have moved into the older buildings and renovated to revive the area.
The shell thing kyde ate looks like escargot. The "cheese" bit is the end and the other parts is the head which has a bit of a chewy texture. That little shell inside that shell is actually the piece that's attached to the "head". In japan, they usually include all the parts of the shellfish on the plate (shells and all) once they break it down which is why you found it inside lol

My instant reaction to Fukui is its # o nuclear power plants. And since the cities receives TONS of money from Japanese government.... I bet the city is very different from any other prefecture. That is my guess.

I would say that in your traveling, you are both incredibly lucky and incredibly flexible. You always have backups and different things to do in an area. After watching every single video on your channel, you only seem disappointed when you have been cheated (money) or the price/value ratio of something is wrong. I aspire to find a travel partner who is as flexible as you two are.
Haha, becoming flexible is a skill that takes effort to sharpen, as odd as it sounds. Don't avoid exploring on your own by the way, it'd be a good way to meet people. -E

Yea, Haha, I'm seriously looking at the Sony A7S iii. We have a somewhat complicated set of needs which limits our camera selection, but it seems to hit everything we need.

Kudzu is an invasive vine in many countries, it spreads rapidly and can take over entire forest areas by its aggressive vining. As you've experienced, it's an interesting ingredient to use as a thickener/gelling agent and can have interesting planty "stuffs" to offer the ritualistic consumer
