Tokyo Japan's Asakusa Without (international) Tourists
Вставка
- Опубліковано 4 чер 2020
- Japan has had the borders closed to international travel for over a month. As the stay-at-home request is lifted in Tokyo it's a unique opportunity to see the city with only residents, especially areas usually flooded with tourists.

We hope to film a series in a new Japanese prefecture (well, new to us anyways, haha) soon.

Which prefecture? ;)
Be safe
Aomori and Iwate prefectures in the Tohoku region please
I'm a simple man. I see new Kyde and Eric. I upvote.
James May just walking through the shot at 3:12 there. Nice to see some guest appearances.
I reckon I saw Elvis a few seconds earlier too.
浅草生まれ、東京近くに何十年も住んでいる私が、こんなに人がいない浅草寺は始めてです
ある意味でとても貴重なビデオかもしれませんね❗️
it seems nice without the tourist crowds. I was there late last year and it was insanely busy. Stay safe you two
That's an interesting point about Japanese people getting a chance to see their own cultural sites without massive crowds. Hopefully people get a chance to enjoy them before they fill back up again.
Also nice to see both of you doing well. Going back out into the world after months of isolation is a strange experience; thanks for sharing what's going on in Japan!
18:48 you saved the most impressive shot at last!! brought me tears.
Great vlog😊🇯🇵🌸
Today is the 11th of June: Therefore: Happy Birthday, dear Kyde!!! Have a wonderful day!
Nice to see Rox open. I've stayed in Asakusa several times and love exploring there as well as Don Quixote.
David Bull is still working in the Mokuhankan shop in Asakusa. He could give his view of the current, and future, prospects for commercial ventures in that area. He is continuing to stream four days a week carving and printing wood blocks.
Here in sweden we don't have a lock-down. We have been socially distancing and the online-sale has gotten the bigger part of customers even the stores have been open.
Cool fly-past at the end!
I did some digging about traveling internationally last night (which I guess also answers your question on how things are here in NYC). Seems like each country has its own limitations to who they allow to enter. Some are completely blocking any tourists. Some allow nearby countries to enter; for instance some European countries allow travel from other schengen zones. Some allow anybody except those coming from high risk areas. Mandatory 14 day quarantines are pretty common.
Whats interesting about Japan is that they are planning on increasing tourism by giving incentives such as covering a percentage of travel expenses. Probably not for high risk areas like the USA anytime soon though.
I saw the announcement of that incentive written in Japanese and it specifically said it's for domestic tourism, but full details have not been announced.
I also saw that Aus and NZ are going to potentially be opening to one another soon, which is interesting. These open border alliances could have interesting impact on different countries.
@@kydeanderic Being for domestic tourists makes a lot more sense. Sources online are vague about who its for.
In UK pigeons do fly high as need occurs. They often build nests on sky-scrapers, chimneys and other tall structures. This as well as the usual nest sites in trees (There's more than one type of Pigeon in UK. Wood Pigeons have distinct white markings around the neck and are quite large as Pigeons go.)
Loved this video! Would love more in this 'style'. Ps. awesome jumper Kyde - despite being a size 10 in AUS, I often have to buy mens jumpers/shoes in japan due to my height. Wish I could fit in kids clothing!
Sydney stores - 1 person per 4 m squared - Uniqlo temp check also when we just visited. Does not exactly count for the space filled by racks of clothes. Still crowded. Other shops - one in one out type policy so queueing outside.

Ah...What can be better on a Friday night than munching on your chicken yakisoba noodles and watching K&E...Cheers!
In Japan it was Saturday 31May, in the UK it was Sunday 31 May.
When I saw you wearing masks my first thought was violent demo time, then I realised that I was wearing one at the same time travelling on the bus home from work. Glad you're both well.
Here in Australia the interstate borders are still closed.international borders are closed, but everything is slowly opening again, such restaurants restricted to 20 people at a time, some pubs and clubs are opening, our tourism industry is shot.
I used to live there! Over 20 years ago now (unbelievably), but it will always hold fond memories especially Hanashi park!
Good to see you out and about again. I hope Swedish people will be allowed back in to Japan for new years. In Sweden we just got green light on travel domestically as long as you are healthy. Still not allowed to travel abroad.
15:43 funny to see you picked up the Japanese "hmm" and even use it when talking English :) it's such a strong "hmm" :p
I was in the French Quarter of New Orleans on 30 May and the place was empty. I felt like I was in a post-Apocalyptic movie and was looking for Mad Max to be coming down the road any second. Back in Oklahoma things are getting back to normal. Some of us are still wearing mask but everyone is keeping the 6 foot separation.
I first went to Sensoji in 2004 and it was like that more Japanese visiting the temple than foreigners. Every time I visited after that more and more foreigners visited, until in 2018 it was absolutly insane. I feel sorry for the poor locals that can't enjoy there own country.
The same thing is happening here in New Zealand. We are looking foward to visiting some mountain areas, that would normally be overrun with tourists. Since NZ has almost eliminated the virus we may keep our borders closed for another year or so. After that it will gradually get back to overtourism again but what can we do? That's the world we live in now.
Wow, I've never seen Senso-Ji so empty during the day. Kinda sad. I have visited there late at night and the temple buildings and grounds make for some great pics.
I was about to suggest a bike tour video if you still have bikes, exploring the neighbourhood that way.
We don't have bike anymore, haha.
It's interesting to see what's happening in Japan. Here in the uk , we are a long way off the end. We just passed 40k deaths , sadly. Hopefully things get better
I still can not understand why you do not have more subs. You two are so chatty and relaxed in front of the camera is unreal. I am confused why you still have PR in Japan as I thought you left your job Kyde, and that is how you two got PR in the first place. As for the virus you mentioned and the numbers in places, here in the UK we were told we had more cases per percentage of people of any other country in the world . But yet if you look at other sources were not.
We don't have permanent residence, and if you do get it it typically does not go away, hence the permanent part. And Kyde didn't leave her job, haha. -E
Cant wait to go back to Japan next year.
I'm puzzled by Japan's official statistics. They had a pretty cavalier attitude towards lockdown but their infection rates are lower than other countries? What am I missing?
Thailand will be one of the first countries Japan allows their people to come visit, but it will be limited to business travellers first which is not surprising since Japan has a lot of investments in Thailand. I'm looking forward to the days when traveling to and from Japan is normal again without having to be quarantined for 14 days when I come back.
How nice to see Asakusa back to normal ! 😅Did you notice the brand new lantern under the main gate ? Eric clean shaved head for Senshoji temple ? ⛪️3C? Crowded, closed, close-contact means Eric and Kyde has keep distance ? even in bedroom?😷 Are you going to visit new Olympic arena for "simplified" game schedule ?
Yea, I actually happened to see them installing the new lantern. -E
I have been stuck inside for going on 13 weeks now. I literally haven't been anywhere else except for short walks. I'm considered "at risk" thanks to the medications I take so I can't take any chances. My neighbours deliver me food which I disinfect before putting away. Getting things delivered is a pain. I'm waiting 3-4 weeks for minor things since the delivery services are jammed up. I want to go out... but I also know I can't. Wearing a mask is for others benefit, not yours. If everyone wears masks then it's great but here people have decided "it's just the flu" so there's a lot of no-mask wearing types having house parties since the bars are closed. I know people who have *died* from this, but people think it's a joke. If we weren't a part of Canada, we would be in the top 5 highest death rate per capita in the world. The provincial government are of the same "ahh the experts are overreacting" type too so that doesn't help.
Stay safe. -E
How do you keep your glasses from getting foggy while wearing a mask? It's driving me nuts. I have to stop wearing them when I have a mask on.
Same!
Haha, it only fogs up when the temperature of the room I'm in is cold, and yes, it's irritating. Need to put on some Fog-X.
Flip back the upper part with the metal strip towards the inside. The air you breathe out will be trapped in there.
Ohh you two planning on going to Fukui next?
Well spotted!
@@kydeanderic Was interested in what book you might be buying and was excited to see it's a new travel guide! Looking forward to when new adventure videos are able to begin again. Thank you for all your great vids!
Nice Otoboke Beaver shirt!!
The water ladles are a bad idea... the handles are touched by everyone... and the drinking... Nah. Not a wise idea. The Kiyiomizudera in Kyoto has their famous 3 springs that you can drink from... They had a case inside of which the scoop ends would sit between users that had a UV lamp in it in an attempt to mitigate spreading anything. The number of users meant that they were in there for a few seconds at a time so I don't know if it was effective or not _but_ it is a good idea in general. Mind you the handle ends should be sanitized too.
Nice to see what it's like when it's not "Nuts2Butts"... :)
Australia wide we've had 7249 cases,102 deaths...
Australia & New Zealand are talking about a Trans-Tasman / ANZAC bubble for travel... Possibly August or September...
So far, Australia doesn't yet have free movement between states...
So interesting to see how Japan is doing stuff compared to England and there seems to be no conformity throughout the world. It's so confusing! I work for the supermarket Tesco and complete the shopping orders placed online. Due to the massive increase in online orders our shifts are currently 4am to 12 lunchtime to get the orders out to people. From 15th June it is only now compulsory to wear face masks on public transport, buses are limited to 10 passengers only. So if you are stood waiting on one, and it's already at capacity, the driver just passes by! Up to 20 people can now attend a funeral a social distance but all weddings and birthday parties are cancelled. My friend has her wedding booked for the 27th of this month and still has no idea if it can go ahead at all! Party has had to be cancelled as all venues are still closed and will be for some time. We have the queuing system at supermarkets with the markers on the floor which has been in place since our lockdown began on March 23rd. We can now meet with up to six people from outside of our household but if you visit and sit in the garden, don't have anything to drink as you're not allowed to pee in their toilet!
As I live in a wood in Suffolk, visiting male friends find a remote tree. Women have to cross their legs :)
How many tests have Japan done?
Supermarkets in malls seems to be a uniquely Asian thing. The last time I was in China I went to a couple of malls with supermarkets. Definitely strange to see initially.
Yea, it's def a thing. -E
Japan needs us, gaijins, there's no point on denying it. We will soon be back...
To say they need foreigners is not an accurate assessment. Sure, their are industries in Japan that are solely for getting that tourist money, but their whole country isn’t devoted to tourism like Jamaica and such.
You’re not entitled to visit their country. Japan has the authority to keep foreigners out whenever they want, and there’s nothing you can do or say about it.
We have the stickers on the floor, but people are very arbitrary as to whether, or not, they adhere to the guidance.
I like how your title says Asakusa without international tourists, and yet there you two are, in Akakusa. Meta video?
We aren't tourists. -E
@@kydeanderic could have fooled me
I mean, if someone has lived in a place for 10 years are they still "tourists?"
@@kydeanderic that's a long airbnb rental
Also wondering how international travel will re-open. If there is a vaccine by then, they could totally require to have proof of vaccination when you travel.
There may never be a vaccine
In Los Angeles things have opened up more but most tourist spots like Hollywood or Santa Monica are empty except for the blm protests in June.
You should make postcards out of the Shop doors.
Cool idea!
Has quarantine destroyed the livelihood of many small businesses there? I should imagine many of the small mom and pop stores have found it difficult to survive the lockdown. Thanks for the insight.
Yes, but I don't have numbers. It doesn't seem to have been quite as devastating as it has been in other parts of the world, however.
Yay! More K&E time!
Striking to see that virtually everyone out & about is wearing a mask and wearing it correctly. It is not at all like that here in the States. In fact, as absurd as it sounds, wearing a mask here has become a political statement. Also, love that you both keep the mask on properly while talking and avoid fidgeting with it like every two seconds. I see so many vids where people pull their mask down every time they speak or they are touching and fussing with it constantly. Good to see y’all are healthy and getting out again. Stay safe!
I have a trip to Japan booked for October 2020 with my wife and kids (we live in Canada). I really hope we don't have to cancel it. We are fine wearing masks the whole time and using a gallon of hand sanitizer!
Yea, wonder if things will be open by then. -E
Today I went to the post office and they had lines marked off on the floor so everyone stood 6' apart. Some people actually stood further apart than that. I also went to my local Starbucks and went inside for the first time since like, early March. They also have lines on the floor showing where you u can stand and such but they also have 2 doors. Entrance and exit.
i think it is quite similar to Denmark on what you have shown. But we dont wear face masks. Many places wont take cash payment but that is not a big problem as most people use credit card. How do they handle that in Japan. Bills and coins goes form hand to hand is a potential way to spread infection. As fare as I have seen cash is still the normal in Japan. But limited access in shops restuarants transport and so on.
We personally have been trying to use contactless or credit when possible, but Japan is a pretty big cash culture still. -E
Japan also has a tray system in most places. You put the money in the tray, the cashier takes the money and puts your change in the tray. No human touching.
Our main shopping street has been turned into a one-way affair with two lanes divided by concrete blocks, which can be awkward if you're a zig-zag kind of shopper like I am. All shops here have markings on the floor (similar to what you show here), and some will only allow in 30 or 50 people at the time, so often there are long queues outside. Wearing a face mask is encouraged, but not everyone complies. It can't be healthy to inhale one's own exhaust fumes for hours on end, not to mention a wet face and misted sunglasses. Kudos to Japan for keeping the death rate so low. It would seem that the country's insularity is paying off once again. We're close to 10,000 victims here in Belgium, which is a lot for a tiny fleck with a measly 11 million inhabitants. But the number of deaths has dwindled to 15-20 per diem, which is encouraging - on the face of it. Great to see the two of you in good health!
Does your face get too hot under those masks with a beard Eric? Kyde said you MUST wear your mask whilst out jogging Eric 😁
I'm in Kansas City. You'd think it was all over by the way some people are acting. We are having a spike now due to memorial day. I'm still being cautious although I am getting out of the house finally. Expecting another spike from the protests.
That one plane was way out of formation... maybe it was taking a video recording of the others?
Yea, it was either spotting them or filming them or something. They flew over us twice and it was the same both times, clearly not a mistake but something done by design.
Man, seeing things reopening like this just hammers home what a horrible job the UK government has done and continues to do. Does give a glimmer of hope to see some sort of normality returning though, thanks!
Looove Kydes style, simple and femenine😘
Going for walks, saving lives, yada yada!
I’m here in Omiya, no tourist. 本当に!!
You guys are Awesome so nice to see Japan again...
death rate is really law in Japan.., much less than flu.
Could Chewbacca catch corona?
Cases in the states is on the rise again. More people without masks. Fewer distancing. Breakdown of traffic flow in stores.
Gee, maybe people RIOTING has something to do with it? Nah.
You are international tourists!
We are legal residents.
ya, but maybe leave the “(international)” out, i’m not sure what your message was...
Sean Z the message is that there are no international tourists because of closed borders but there is still a fair amount of domestic tourists. Why is that confusing to understand?
AAgggghhhhh .... talking qtips!.
Eric needs a bigger mask.
Here in the UK it's fine I think it's the same thing as in this video.
Really, doesn’t UK have 40,000 deaths.
newman ziu Dude, you’re oblivious to your own COVID death tally! UK has over 40,000 deaths.
boring
Glad you could spice it up with this exciting commentary!
@@kydeanderic your welcome
行き過ぎたインバウンドの再開は勘弁。投稿者が日本語を読めませんように(笑)。
Guys why are you wearing those muzzles? Is it mandatory in Japan at the moment? Or is it the social stigma of 'dumb gaijins' during this time as they wear them in general during flu season (the one's who are ill of course, out of courtesy)? Or do you really believe there's a bubonic plague in the air??
We really believe over 300,000 humans beings have died because of a virus, yes. If you truly care so little for other people our videos aren't for you. -Eric
Sir, have you been living under a rock? Are you still remaining blissfully ignorant about how the virus is spread? Please don’t shame people for wearing masks.
@@kydeanderic OK sorry for having the wrong opinion. But that means I don't care? Wouldn't mind going into the effectiveness of government led knee-jerk lockdowns, the use of face masks against the novel strain of covid, social distancing etc but UA-cam comments on this video aren't the place, I guess.
@@MidoriMori Plenty of evidence that wearing them doesn't do anything. When it's all over and all data is in, the bell curve for all countries will be remarkably very similar, regardless of what intervention was made, personal or forced upon. If you want a specific country example, China has a similar culture of mask wearing in general, but the virus spread as much as hard hit European places. Whereas Japan practically did nothing bar the in-name only state of 'emergency'. The virus just never really reached its shores, like NZ. It's all well and good, but you cannot sit and wait for a vaccine that may or may not happen at all as these respiratory diseases mutate on a yearly basis, it's just this one got worldwide acclaim. Read this paper Bae S et al., “Effectiveness of Surgical and Cotton Masks in Blocking SARS-CoV-2:, Ann Intern Med., April 6th 2020
@@nigelo92 "Whereas Japan practically did nothing bar the in-name only state of 'emergency'."
With that single sentence, you've just proven how little you know about Japan and how they are most likely the most hygienic people on the planet. "herp derp japanese didnt get hit by the virus" Well guess what, Japan was one of the first country outside China to get hit, but because they already wear protection most of the time and know how to act in such situation, it didnt affected them as much! Mind blowing i know!
