I just installed a Selkirk thimble. It is round. I had zero idea what I was doing. Video didn't help me much before I did it, but it did help after I did it "not really the right way". I am really cautious if I do something like this. I got a laser thermometer to check temp in different locations. I have to now go fix my mistakes. Sometimes you just don't understand till you get in there and do it
How do you know size to buy? If using say 150mm internal diameter twin wall flue with outside diameter being 180mm, what size thimble would I buy please. Thank you
You want to get a thimble that’s sized to the outside diameter of your stove pipe. The closer the fit, the less sealant you’ll need to keep cold air from passing thru the thimble to your interior.
@@GrubNGas I did a bit of research and it looks like a cut out tool with a grout/tile bit to cut the plaster then switch to a wood bit to cut the wood strips (lath) attached to the plaster. Too much vibration (jigsaw or sawsall) and the blades catch on the wood and jolt it resulting in cracks and pieces of plaster breaking off. I'm getting a wood stove put in this old house and researching to make sure it goes smoothly. 👍
A hole saw will cut the plaster but it's really hard on the teeth. Just get a cheap harbor freight kit. I've cut tons of it with an oscillating saw for electrical work. I get the cheap bulk blades on Amazon since the plaster will wear the teeth off after cutting a few holes.
That’s a good question, and I’m probably not qualified to say (for every application). I would check your local building code to make sure it’s an approved distance from the ceiling.
Thank you. I need videos!
You’re most welcome! Thanks for watching and commenting!

I was gonna ask about that truck...😂
Yeah, it’s in good shape too! But I don’t think he’d sell it😂
Never seen someone put a exhaust in with no exterior pipe . Did it vent ok?
Yes, it’s just for a coffee roaster, and it has a forced air fan to push it out.
Very nice, would just like more info what kind of tape and Caulking
The tape I used was aluminum duct tape. I’ll try to add a link here and a link for the caulk.
Here’s a comparable product (got mine at a local store): amzn.to/3FUkDrH
Here’s a comparable caulk: amzn.to/3FWT94V
Here’s a comparable exterior white caulk for the outside: amzn.to/40uKyQt
Thanks

If the wall is plaster and lath, can you still use that hole saw to cut the hole in the wall?
I don't know if this would cut that...I think you might need a jigsaw or a reciprocating saw.

@@trotter73ca that sounds like a solid plan, and yeah, the jigsaw could cause a plaster split. Good call!

How far from the ceiling do you have to be

You could at least tell them its for a pellet stove, not a wood stove.
Thank you for the clarification, and I’ll keep that in mind for future videos!
Wear eye protection
Yes. Big miss on my part.
