SERIOUSLY - Pretty damn close - the thin, sheet metal cylinders for exterior of the ("jettisoned") boosters of the Artemis Project rocket are being "friction- welded", rather than TIG, for Alum. alloy. The thin plates (~ 2mm) are "butt- joined", then 2 flat "pressure pins" of hard steel - each about 15mm (1/2 in) dia. apply pressure, from both sides, then friction - by rotating, at about 200- 300 rpm ( looks like "drill- press" speed ). The sheet metal is slowly fed, perfectly "butted", between the rotating pressure- pins.. - The result is what looks like a perfectly welded, flat sheet, behind the pins (no flux used) only circular marks, to mark the "seam". - It looks great, the pressure and rotation reach the melting pt. of the Alum. alloy - BUT - these welds have been failing occasionally - Engineers not sure why - so resulting in some serious delays... - My info is that this is not a "new" welding method - just not been used for rockets before.
Well atleast he invented his own soldering flux, a new method of drilling holes & he made is own improvised tap for the thread. Some poor people can atleast use these tech rather than buying expensive tools & accessories

Stripping alkaline batteries bare handed to weld brake levers together. Behaviour like that, I doubt this guy lived more than 6 minutes after making this video.
so you think that this video was made so nasa could use this method do you? well your wrong, nasa actually uses this method already where do you think the science come from dumbass
Nice fix… but I wouldn't trust it. If you pull the brakes to avoid crashing into a car and the lever breaks you may have saved money but you'll definitely end up in the hospital... or maybe worse!
@@leetucker9938 It won't snap as it has the screw in the core and that strengthens it. But yes, totally waste of time and money for something what you can buy brand new at at least 1/3 of the cost to repair it. Unless you have nothing better to do... lol

I used to work for NASA. We used this method on the Challenger Space Shuttle to hold the solid rocket boosters together. I don't work for NASA any more.
The integrity of the fixed lever comes from the steel screw inside. Make it longer, much longer. Also drill larger diameter holes, because it is extremely difficult to place them 0.1mm precision to face each other. If the hole is larger you can fill it with epoxy, push a steel rod in it and align the parts snug, without gap. Also: this is not welding. Buy a new one, or just go to a shop where they use argon and really do weld.
Thank you for your advice, I tried making a video this way and had trouble soldering it, now I can complete part 2 of this task, thank you for sharing, good luck! Merry Christmas and keep supporting us. ❤️
No way I would put my brakes on that mend. First time you need to do an emergency stop the forces involved in the panicked grip will snap it at the repair...
Clever method. Yes easier and cheaper to buy new but people just don't get his point. It is very handy to know skills like this. A lot more to it than people realise. Excellent improvisation. Making a tap out of a screw Using the battery to make a flux The end result is perfectly serviceable. Heating and hammering straight shows the strength of the joint. Thanks for the video - anyone who really knows engineering would find the processes used to be interesting.

It's because these people have been trained to be consuming sheep and everytime something breaks they buy a new one. If ever in a real emergency, everyone in this comments section would be begging this guy to help.😂
What's up with all the negative feedback. A fix like this has endless uses and can be applied to much more critical things than the break lever used for this demonstration. All you people running your mouths are the real waste of time. You sound like a bunch of idiots thinking your so smart.
Clever idea. A few suggestions on how to make it better. First, you left the bluing agent on the joint. It will contaminate the joint so get that off with acetone before brazing and you will get a much stronger joint. Brushing the Al around the crack to take off the oxide layer will also help. Second, while the steel screw trick was a clever way to tap the hole, steel should not be in direct contact with aluminum as it creates a battery of sorts and will corrode; search “galvanic corrosion”. Use an aluminum fastener if you can find one. Finally, there are aluminum brazing rods like Aluxcor that are intended for this purpose and work pretty well. Personally if I had to reuse the part I would tack it together with a tig welder, grind out a groove on both sides to ensure full penetration, tig weld it, grind and polish. A break lever is a safety item.

Very good advice. The only issue is where he's at in the world. Exotic brazing rods are next to impossible. I work 3000 miles from the nearest town and we don't have such luxuries. However this is not a bad idea if you look at the chemistry😂
@@inventorK20 There are not men that are NASA professors. though the organisation may have professors who work at NASA. You are not the bright spark . This is the most mishandled metallic cluster that can be presented. Your use of zinc to enable a bond of sorts between aluminium and solder is a creative thought. But tin and lead do not have the type of strength you need in that application. So you add a threaded bit of steel. You don't teach a professor who works at NASA a single solitary iota yet! more likely a professor who works a NASA tasked with solving this problem might return with an improved shape of the lever cast in 7077 alloy or 6061? Perhaps a billet of such exotic alloy you will be perplexed by the formula, which is then milled to within a rough tolerance around 0.0001" by CNC machinery, that he writes the code for would present a stronger item with no contamination or flaw that also is made to fit much better. If you really believe a native fellow will ride a worn out scooter from the jungles of Asia unable to remain upright on it then breaks the lever off and is subsequently overwhelmed by the prospect of obtaining a new bit from Japan for his 40 year old Honda will then arise to educate an aerospace engineer he calls professor that is a man involved in realities beyond your wildest nightmares, then you my fine feathered friend have got another cluck plucking. operating a camera and editing on the computer though? The idea of the video is to demonstrate that you have options. In many parts of the world, it is often quite difficult to get parts. Especially if you live any distance from the nearest supply or order center, and the only vehicle that you have is the one that needs the part. It's kind of a "catch - 22" . The ingenuity here is top level (he made his own tap and uses self-tapping screws as drill bits!), but: 1- I am a bit surprised to see ten fingers, considering the cavalier use of the angle grinder! 2- No "welding" took place here. The mechanical strength is in the insert he embedded in the handle. 3- Why dissolve the battery casing in drain cleaner to make a zinc solution in either acid or base (can't tell which) to clean the brake lever before soldering?
Hello, button batteries, phone batteries... often contain toxic elements such as cadmium, mercury... When rusted or punctured, these substances can leak out. Interestingly I believe that caustic soda also reacts with zinc although it's mentioned in error,, or is it ? I've often made up zinc chloride flux exactly from the battery casings which I always misplace cos I don't label my containers , it's a great flux for stainless steel too. It don't work as a useful flux for aluminium though. But I ain't tried the solution of zinc in caustic soda as a flux .

I agree with other commenters that this is probably unsafe. You should replace the part if you can. That said, just wanted to correct the video title: this is soldering, not welding. The use of the zinc solution creates a flux compatible with aluminum.
This is a good demo of a rework. While appreciating the efforts it is difficult for a normal person with limited tools and no brazing equipment. The above work can be attempted if the part is not available in the market. Otherwise replacement is the best option.

I think if you have a broken brake lever, you should take your car to a repair shop to replace it with a new one. It's fast and safe. Doing it like a video clip is too elaborate, time-consuming, and costs more materials than it would cost for you to replace it with a new one.
Best tip I can give anyone new to riding, or especially on the dirt. Loosen of your clutch and brake leavers clamps, this allows the lever to fold up or under. Pick up the bike and just tap it back.

Only moved the costs around. Still had to buy a battery, toilet bowl cleaner, bolt and solder with the only structural part of the repair being the bolt. The solder and homemade flux was just basically filler and faring compound. Personally I just get very cheap low temperature aluminum brazing rods for these repairs which work with the same torch and result in a stronger than steel repair. Somethings are worth pursuing in real life while others are simply entertainment. Best!
@@franciscomorales7012 I worked on projects involving the Shuttle and it wasn't NASA but a SubContractor who messed up QC on the specs. NASA knows metallurgy and the correct flux to use for the best results so would not resort to a questionable and inconsistent flux made by snipping up already compromised alkaline batteries. They would have top notch welders and machinists doing these repairs to impeccable standards that most today still not able match what was done by them over 50 years ago, even with modern computer technology. While this was clever, I’m not sure I’d repair a brake lever, or at least, not by brazing. Not sure what metal you used for the threaded insert, but it needs to be from the same family as the light alloy used in the lever. Dissimilar metals react with each other, causing galvanic corrosion, so your lever will gradually weaken from the inside, where you can’t see it. Could you please explain the use of the battery? What is the chemical you used and why did you need the strips of metal from the battery? It obviously resulted in a brazing flux, of some sort, but would genuine flux not be cheaper and easier than whatever that was? Or is that something different? Thanks for the video, though. Lots of useful tricks there, for non safety related repairs or for artistic metal work.

galvanic corrosion needs an electrolyte in-between the metals i think to happen. in this case there's no electrolyte in-between(rain for example) and the electrolyte can only contact the aluminum so i don't think there will be a reaction. perhaps a chemist or experimentalist could chime in.

Closest is that it seems like Tesla used these methods to build the cybertruck. At least from the look of the things.

Hello nice to meet you. We look forward to receiving your support in the near future. Wishing you and your family a peaceful and happy Christmas.

What's up with all the negative feedback. A fix like this has endless uses and can be applied to much more critical things than the break lever used for this demonstration. All you people running your mouths are the real waste of time. You sound like a bunch of idiots thinking your so smart.
@@TekkWolf NO , this isnt about how to fix a fork dude, its something that could save his life or lose it potentially

@@inventorK20 There are not men that are NASA professors. though the organisation may have professors who work at NASA.
You are not the bright spark . This is the most mishandled metallic cluster that can be presented. Your use of zinc to
enable a bond of sorts between aluminium and solder is a creative thought. The ingenuity here is top level (he made his own tap and uses self-tapping screws as drill bits!), but:
1- I am a bit surprised to see ten fingers, considering the cavalier use of the angle grinder!
We will try to improve them in the next videos. Wishing you and your family all the luck. lucky lucky. lucky
The liquid mixed with the zinc was hydrochloric acid drain cleaner. That makes zinc chloride, which is used as solder flux.
Not easy
Interestingly I believe that caustic soda also reacts with zinc although it's mentioned in error,, or is it ? I've often made up zinc chloride flux exactly from the battery casings which I always misplace cos I don't label my containers , it's a great flux for stainless steel too. It don't work as a useful flux for aluminium though. But I ain't tried the solution of zinc in caustic soda as a flux .

I started repairing brake levers just like this. Soon I was doing it as a job. It only takes about 4.5 hours for each one and I was able to charge $15 dollars for each one I repaired.
Hello, thank you for sharing, have a nice day
Appreciate the hard work, you truly believe in repairing rather than use and throw
Hello, thank you very much for your positive sharing, ❤️ ❤️ ❤, you are a good friend ❤️ ❤️ ❤️, we look forward to receiving your support in the near future. Wish you and your family a happy new day
The next day, the part broke an inch further down and it was thrown in the bin.
Hello, thank you very much for sharing with us, you are a good teacher, you have given me a lot of knowledge, you are worthy of our respect, we look forward to receiving your support yours in the near future. galvanic corrosion needs an electrolyte in-between the metals i think to happen. in this case there's no electrolyte in-between(rain for example) and the electrolyte can only contact the aluminum so i don't think there will be a reaction. perhaps a chemist or experimentalist could chime in.
After watching this video , i am planning to buy new break lever
Hello, nice to chat with you, thank you for your interest and sharing, my good friend, have a nice day💖 💖 💖
А я дурак приварил аргонной сваркой за 5 минут! Нужно было тоже день потратить, помучиться 😄
Always a way to fix something rather than throw it away being doing it myself for years.👍

Gluing a broken off break lever is the dumpist thing i ever seen in my life!
Just the satisfaction of repairing something is better than buying new part..Modern technicians nolonger waste time on repairs...the labour costs are sometimes more than a new part...
@@inventorK20Happy Hanukah. Out here on the perimeter . We use the short lever and throw that other bit in the scrub.

Hello, thank you very much for the information you have brought us, have a nice day
YOUR RIGHT I saw them fix a thruster on the Space Shuttle the exact same way!!!! Your an FN genius!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Nice video. can you explain the flux portion? what was the toilet bowl cleaner mostly made from? also the battery shell?
Hello, thank you for sharing your wonderful thoughts with us. I'm very happy. Thanks a lot. The battery I used to get zinc reacts with hydrochloric acid to create a solution in the form of a flux. I look forward to receiving your support in the near future. Wishing you and your family a peaceful and happy Christmas. happiness
My advice to you is to replace that brake lever before you use the bike again.Hydrochloric acid , over time vastly depletes the inherent strength of cast aluminium, which is what the lever is made of. It's a great method to use ON OTHER, NON-CRUCIAL COMPONENTS.
What happens when electrolysis starts to occur between the ferrous and nonferrous metals of steel and aluminium?

Hope that you've sold the bike by then.
It's a brake lever, he won't live that long.
Or, stay with me on this, you could go purchase a $9 brake handle from your local dealer. Unless you prefer going around your ass to get to your elbow.

Пять минут это недоделанное создание занималось черти чем. А потом выяснилось, что у него есть припой по аллюминию.
Это ШЕДЕВР!

@@inventorK20 You did not understand. It was sarcasm, but in fact you were called an unfinished creature, the Russians have an offensive expression. I don't share his point of view and I liked the video

It's a good idea, but I don't have many tools to do this job. So I prefer to buy another lever, it's cheaper for me.
