This is the most informative video covering wood burning stove installation through the roof chimney kit as a DIY homeowner. This is invaluable information and I thank you for sharing it. You have helped me immensely, friend.
I enjoy the running commentary. I like to know the "why" to do stuff, not just the "what" to do. You're always going to run into situations that are new and unique and if you know "why", then you can adapt your thinking to cover a previously unknown situation. I've got a couple of stove chimneys to do this month, and this is good to see. Like you say, I'm always in "learn" mode. I'm nearly 70 years old and I'm not too proud to learn new stuff. Please keep up your good work!
Great video, that's a great looking install and nice vent stack system. A mentor once told me after a training presentation I'd given, "Folks aren't here for a slick talkin' presenter, they're here to see you, so just be yourself." That's given me a big confidence boost. That's a long winded way of saying: we enjoy your commentary whether it's real time or voice-over. Thanks for the great content you're putting out!
Good job budd. Looks good. And you did good on salvaging the video as the narrator. Don’t listen to all the negative comments. Those peeps are everywhere and you’ll never get rid of them. It’s like a plague
Gotta say thank you for the video! While I didn't end up doing as professional a job as you, I did use your video as a guide to install my pipe and flashing. We had a good rain the other day and not a single drop off water in the attic. Many thanks!
Nothing wrong with post-shoot narration. Some great vids out there using that method, often better as it incorporates things thought of afterwards. Useful vid thanks. I need to do this soon on a cottage in Scotland with traditional slates, so not exactly the same but the principles are. Many thanks. 👍
Doing this on a professional level for crematoriums we used red top end engine silicone on the flange. not sure if wood burning stoves need that but it helps to keep the moisture out if water runs down the chimney.
Thank you! We're just homeowners needing to reposition (probably replace) the storm collar and just needed to know exactly where to place it. This answers our question!
This was hands down the best Duravent roof flashing tutorial on UA-cam. Great job. Cutting a hole in my roof first thing in the morning lol. Update. You saved my ass with this information it came out great and following your process and extensive flashing tips I am confident that my first time doing this was a great success. Thank you a lot
This is how it should be done by a homeowner. Do the downstairs work yourself, save the $ on the install, then call the roofing professional in to make the penetration through the roof and let him make sure it is flashed & shingled properly. I have seen so many DIY'ers that really tried to do a good job on a wood stove vent, but missed the small stuff like tucking the brace brackets under a shingle and instead, they nailed it right on top of the shingle into the roof deck. So rather than screwing with proper embedment into the top chord of a truss and getting excellent tension values, they're expecting a simple nail through a shingle into 1/2" deck to withstand the multi-directional wind forces on the vent. Then they're expecting the dab of silicone caulk on top of the nail head to give them water tight conditions. There's way more to this and Brian, you make it look easy. Cheers to you
As someone with years experience as well. I agree with 99% of the way you do things and the explanations you give. This is not only good for diy homeowners but could almost be a training vid for new employers. Good job, enjoy the videos.
@@GrandRoofingInc I agree man. You will have a ton of subs pretty soon. I'm a 20 plus year bricklayer that does a little bit of everything. I'm installing a wood burner into my home and came across this video. I've learned a lot from all of your videos. You get into great detail and explain things very well. 🍻 cheers man. 👍
Maybe that audio issue was a blessing in disguise. When you do voice overs, you have the opportunity to add things you might have forgotten and it's smoother than adding text into the video. As usual, I've learned a few really helpful things. Namely that this transparent harnesses and safety ropes are nice cause they don't hinder your movements and get in the way of your work like those solid color ones. 😂 I've used a plumb bob to send mine through the roof and have boxed out the truss on two installs. Not sure if that was the best thing, but it all felt strong. Smart thinking with the lager to smaller diameter anchor rods. When water gets in those, they will rust and break free. Cougar Paws are great on singles, period. But they absolutely suck on steel! That lower roof would be about the steepest I'd go with em. Thanks again for making the time to share your knowledge and skills.
im putting a used wood stove in my garage this weekend. got the through the roof kit and pipe. i have not done roofing in probably 20 years. defiantly going to need to watch a couple of videos. this was very helpful thank you.
Either format worked well. For me what's more important is detailed explanation of what your doing and why. As a DIY guy I now think I could do this after watching your video. Thanks!
I have lost audio on some of my videos, some I could salvage, some were junk. I think the voice over does great but fast forwarding kinda made my head spin and I couldn't follow along very well. Great video!
Narrating was great - I liked that ! Very instructive, educational video - I learned a lot. Only down-side, I get motion-sick pretty easily, and with all of the swinging back and forth of the camera, I could only watch 5-ish minutes at a time. Some kind of a tripod, setting still, off to the side, and moved every once in a while would have made it a perfect video ! Thanks for taking the time to share this level of educational detail !
Just ran across this getting ready to install a wood stove. Overdubs are fine. In fact, I think it's better because you don't have to narrate while you're trying to work.
Voice over was fine. Just to nit pick, bolt heads up or forward always. If the nut comes off gravity keeps the bolt in. As for forward you aren’t an aircraft so it doesn’t matter. But aviation maintenance/ building is where up and forward comes from 👍🏻👍🏻
Just a added install tip. All wood stove pipe installs need to be a minimum of two feet above the peak. I like three feet for a good draft. Dura vent install kits come with a great install book.
I think that changes with a lower pitch roof when the pipe is further away from the peak. When I installed mine, the clearance was dependant upon the level distance either to the roof or to the peak.
Great video. Thank you. One thing to keep in mind for diy is to make sure you get the right pitched flashing as well. Most are 0-6/12 and if you're over that you need a steep pitch flashing. For the height, I've always heard 2 feet higher then whatever is in a 10 ft radius..
I'm an avid diyer, but scared of heights. I'm farming this one out to a local contractor. It's a single story house with an attic and flat ceiling downstairs. He said $500 for the instal. I've got the basic installation kit ( ceiling box, storm collars, transition ring, chimney cap) and double wall pipe from selkirk supervent on order from lowes now. Supposed to be here before the end of the month. Cant wait to get away from electric heat, lol.
I only have one comment on the part where you lost audio....the time framing was a little to fast....could be it is 1 am and I am tired but all in all great tutorial as I will be ....yes me I will be installing my new wood stove when it arrives next week....have not done this before so I will let you know how it turns out...Thanks for the great video!!!!
I'll be keeping this one for later... best I've found. I think the narration worked just fine. There's no need to excuse yourself. Stuf happens, dont it. Only would be nice to slow the action just a little. Thanks for the help!
I have to tell you this, you were brave to get up on that roof. It is really steep. I am 68, I know I don't have any business at my age being on a roof of any kind, but that roof was really steep. Very dangerous. I would have to call an experienced carpenter to do this job.
You can also shoot a nail through the roof center of the trusses, then put your flashing down onto the roof (center of the nail poking through) mark the shingles with marker or whatever, cut the shingles straight up from the lowest row of shingles you can, cut all the way up and around the circle you marked and straight back down to the row you started. Now all you gotta do is cut the plywood circle you desire with Sawzall. Pull any nails loose you can to slide the flashing up underneath all the rows till it sits flush with the circle you cut out of the shingles. Nail it on place and run the flue pipe up through the attic. Sometimes down, screw that bitch in place, caulk it, call it a day bud. I did hvac flues for 10 years that way, never had a leak from shingles not overlapping the flashing enough or any of that.
Thank you for the video. My tablet has a setting for playback speed, so I slowed it down a lot when you were whipping your head back and forth from one side of the pipe to the other. That cut down on my dizziness, but made you sound much too drunk to be on a roof! 😆 I would love to know the name of the phone app that reads the pitch.
Did I miss it or does a person add pookey all around where the rain shield meets the stove pipe? For me, I wished you didn't FF through some of the steps like the shingle removal but FF through putting nuts on the stand off supports is perfectly fine. Thank You for the informative video.
What way do you use to find the wooden truss or rafters when the shingles are up already? Any help appreciated I love anything to do with construction plumbing electrical roofing you name it and I’ve always struggled with my purpose and position in life so what would you think would be a good occupation for somebody who loves doing that and finding out about that
You need to apply fire proof or high temperature sealant to the underside of the flashing on the sides top but leave the bottom open for drainage then nail it down to the roof he screwed up
Dont take this as a neg comment. I was an installer for many years and I"ve put in hundreds of those things. You dont need to remove the shingles. I wish I had a video of the method we used. Clean install don"t get me wrong.
I Install and inspect Chimney’s for a living i’m sceptical there’s 2 inches to that rafter on the left and the sheathing after levelling. Hopefully the homeowner installed the bottom portion correctly as you’re assuming responsibility for his work.
It's kind of hard to tell from the camera. Everything looked to be pretty good. In the estimate I figured, I included that the homeowner installed everything through the roof. I was only contracted to put the flashing in above. It was clearly spelled out in the estimate. Whenever there is a possibility of liability, I try to cover myself.
@@GrandRoofingInc good thinking , impeccable shingle work around the flashing. I always get a kick out of homeowner installations when they just put the flashing right on top of the shingles and tar the hell out of it ……
I think you said you used triple insulated pipe can you explain from the stove we have an old potbelly stove that takes a adapter I haven’t found yet it’s oblong but does that need to be cast-iron or stainless steel? Do I need a ceiling box? We have no attic. It’s only 8 inchof rafter to the outside flat roof. What would we need exactly to connect an old potbelly stove and be safe
Hi I came across your video, I'm using the selkirk pipe with the support ears already on it. My question is that can sit onto of shingles ? Do you use any sealer underneath or on top before you put your flashing on top of that.
Excellent video, thank you for the knowledge! Looking to do this soon myself. One question - what is that yellow think you're standing on that helps counter the roof's pitch?
Thank you for the great vid. My only critique is maybe consider a fixed-mounted camera instead of head-mounted. Because with it moving every time you turn your head, especially when you fast forward it, man does that get nauseating.
We had a chimney going through the roof for wood burner, worked great but husband wanted to go through side wall. Thought it would burn better! Now having drafting problems and doesn’t give off the heat it used to! Still gives off heat but instead of 80 in the house now 70 degrees. We only heat with wood. Any suggestions? Thank You
Way better than watching this old house. Thanks for the video.
