BMW i4 eDrive40 UK Review: why bother with an M50? | 4K

- Is BMW's 340hp i4 eDrive40 the family-friendly electric car with the best chance of luring buyers away from the Tesla Model 3? Despite having 204hp less and two fewer driven wheels than the potent i4 M50 model, we think it might be. This is a proper BMW that feels like a perfect blend of old and new. For those not yet sold on the prospect of Tesla ownership, it looks enormously tempting. But don't just take our word for it, let Sam run you through the basics in our latest video.
Oh, and don't forget to let us know: Which would you go for?

Having owned a MY for 14 mo now I'm looking forward to getting back to a BMW interior, not to mention RWD.
Ordered it September 2021 and my BMW i4 edrive40 arrives in April 2022. Thank you for everything positive you said about the car is what I thought when comparing it to the Tesla Model 3 last year.
Exciting! Congratulations on the purchase
Why on earth does it cost 7 months to get a car?
Ordered one today! Sapphire Black. Thank you for an excellent review.
Great review. ! Thanks. Love this BMW and getting used to the new grille design. Kinda like it.
Great Video, thanks!
Looks good, thanks for your review.
You're welcome, Dean :)
Nice Review! Is that dark green as your pullover and your watch wrist band?
I test drove this yesterday. Tremendous fun. I'm hoping I can get a used one in a year, or two.
Currently waiting for a call from my dealer to do a test drive. No 40e version available in my country yet. And order now and you get a delivery in Q2 2023. If I end up liking it and BMW gives their usual leasing discounts I’ll end up ordering a 40e in Sanremo green with cognac interior, M sport with the 18” wheels. My reasoning will however be totally different than yours. I have to get an electric car, I don’t want a SUV. I do like quality and want something reasonably quick. Strong points for the i4 as an electric car are range and comfort. Since I rarely have passenger limited back seat room is no real issue. And coming from 2L diesels in the past I’m sure I’ll find it adequately quick, except on German motorways.
nice review mate. Dont think any reviewer mention the driving experience this clearly.
We aim to please :)
Just ordered mine today 😊
i am an old fashion guys, enjoys driving petrol car, i am driving F10 M5 paired with meisterschaft exhaust for a wonderful symphony of orchestra during every cold start for several years ....but i am interested to try out electric car since i assume electric cars are the future cars.....but its just to quiet which i will miss those exhaust music....and not many electric port around......so i am still kind of confuse till now...
Why you ask?...for us on the Canadian prairies, we ordered the M50 because we have 4 months of snow and icy roads. RWD only isn't always practical here.
If that's the case, I'd actually choose an offroader despite how much I dislike them
Wish you had discussed its Auto Cruise. I test drove an IX a few days ago here in the USA. Well, list price was $92,000. There was NO radar control of the cruise at all...it showed no sign if slowing down as we approached the car in front. The salesman had no idea if that feature was included. Duh.
doesn't come as standard in the UK. have to buy the Tech plus pack.
Hopefully the cognac leather and sports seats come to the UK🤞🏼not on the UK configurator yet but seems to be elsewhere in Europe and North America.
I can have the cognac leather on the one I intend to order but it has to be with sport seats and lumber adjuster which are extras.
@@alanmachin3054 I couldn’t see an option for this on the UK configurator? Was this direct at the dealership?
It must be because I am going to order the M 50 model where the cognac is available with the sport seats and lumbar adjustment.
@@alanmachin3054 that’s right, it’s an option for the M50 in the UK, not the e40. Although it’s available on both models elsewhere. Cognac and Sanremo Green look stunning together!
Good review. This bloke will go far in the motor journal world
That color!💚
I think it’s hideous!
@@raftonpounder6696 plenty of other colors to choose from!
@@WesleyNulensPhotographer yes. I have ordered a Sapphire Black one.
Already ordered M50 in the same colour with cognac interior. Won’t labour a point that’s what I wanted & that’s what I am getting. Good points in the vid though.
If you do't mind me asking how much that set you back a month and over how long?
Cognac interior 😍 Approve!
Would love to know how the battery weight helps with the handling in Ice\snow conditions with so much rear wheel drive power compared to your standard ICE rear wheel drive BMW car
Interestingly, with the weight distribution of the electric model being so much more evenly spread than the petrol equivalent, traction ought to be better. That said, if you regularly drive in snow/ice, the M50 model's twin-motor setup would no doubt pay dividends :)
In "interior" section of your video you dont actually show the interior.
Top car 😍
What was the estimated range on long journey trips? Surely 590km is not accurate. Is it half the range on highway journey?
Hi Abraham, unfortunately, we weren't able to really test range in our short drive. But we noticed the estimated range went down consistently with the miles we were covering. Until we started to work the motor harder, of course.
On the highway it probably has around 450km of range
Also, it depends on the type of rims you get. Here in the U.S, the configurator says you should get a 301 mile range with the standard 18 inch rims but if you opt for any if the 19's or 20's then it will go down to 282 miles.
Why does he steer like BA Baracus?
Great car its a pity BMW can't offer the buyer a delivery date. Supposed to be a blue chip Co as well
Virtually all EVs are back ordered these days. Mach e, EV5, etc...
when are you reviewing i4 m50?
Hopefully before the end of spring - we have some plans for a versus video!
@cinch sorry to say mate and off-topic, but I had to stop watching after a minute coz I got dizzy by the camera motion...
I'm sure you made an interesting video and I'll sure try to continue watching, but I hope the moving in all directions will stop when you're in the car :)
Beautiful car 👍 unfortunately the backseat is too small for teenage Kids, so I ordered the new iX3 Msport instead
Strong choice!
iX3 is very good, you won’t be disappointed! 👍
BMW has never been a class leader when it comes to steering?! Hahaha oh wow, somebody get this automotive amateur off this channel please. BMW is LITERALLY known for being the benchmark when it comes to steering. Don't believe? Look it up.
Hi there, while I totally agree that BMWs of yesteryear have had some terrific steering feel, only a small few have been particularly strong since the brand switched to electric assistance. The new G20-based 3/4 Series models have great front-axle responses, but not masses of feel. Even the mega M2 CS lacks real steering feel, and the latest M5 has a similar issue. That's not to say they don't steer well - almost all steer brilliantly. But your fingertips aren't provided with masses of information through the rim itself. Not like comparable Porsches, or even Jaguars. Hope that clears things up :)
Comparable porsches? In your country you have porsches at the pricepoint of a 3 or 4 series? Wow, in that case I need to go to uk really quick then! Here in Holland a porsche can never be called comparable to a 3/4 series: the cheapest porsch is about 80k euros while the cheapest 3 series is around 40k so that’s double the price. Jaguars are also expensive here but the xe is comparable to the 3 series and yes many motorjournalists say that the xe has surpassed the 3 series as the ultimate driving machine, but there are also a lot of your colleagues who still prefer the 3 so it is not a done deal.
@@thisnamealsotaken Ouch! In the UK, both the 718 Cayman and 718 Boxster start at well under £50,000 - which means they're both cheaper than this i4 eDrive40. Just to clarify, I love the new 3 Series/4 Series - my comments are specifically related to steering feel through the wheel rim itself. The G20 cars do offer lots of feel through the chassis itself, which is one reason why they're so brilliant.
Absolutely, this is unbelievable.
@@thisnamealsotaken You can't compare Porches to BMW, and no Jaguars don't have better steering.
Może to wydać się dziwne ale maska i front samochodu wygląda jak pochwa kobieca ...
Not heard that one yet! We daren't ask for further explanation..
Acutally it’s not 4d, but 5d. It’s not sedan.
Hi Marthy, while you're technically right, Sam's reference to 'four doors' is in comparison to manufacturers like BMW calling these cars 'four-door coupes'. Hope that clears things up :)
@@cinch Hello ;) Coupe is everytime 2d :) So this is not 4d coupe. It’s grand coupe with 5 doors.
@@MarthyV It looks like we agree, Marthy. We just have to convince the manufacturers now...
