BMW i4: Electrifying new BMW saloon
Вставка
- Опубліковано 27 тра 2024
- The i4 is an all-electric version of BMW's 4 Series Gran Coupe, and you might think that means it has a bit less stardust and razzmatazz than purpose-built EV rivals like the Tesla Model 3 or Polestar 2. However, in this CarGurus UK video review, Vicky Parrott finds that this Bavarian BEV has the kind of talent that should have Tesla and Polestar quaking in their battery-powered boots.
The range-topping M50 gets four-wheel drive and 536bhp, but it’s the eDrive40 tested here that’s likely to be of more interest to most buyers. It has 335bhp, rear-wheel drive and an official WLTP electric range of up to 365 miles.

Pros
Rewarding and comfortable to drive
Superbly made cabin
The M50 is savagely fast
Cons
Not as well equipped as some rivals
Cheaper EVs like the Hyundai Ioniq 5 have more space in the back
Expensive to buy
The CarGurus verdict
The BMW i4 is truly great to drive, whether you want something with a bit of enthusiastic verve or that’s confident and comfortable, it’ll do the job well. It certainly has a better driving position and superior ride and handling when compared to the Tesla Model 3 or the Polestar 2.
The compromise is that the i4 is more expensive and not as well equipped. You also don’t have the advantage of Tesla’s excellent Supercharger network, which undeniably makes long-distance driving in an EV a fair bit easier, but if you can justify the extra cost, then this is the best mid-sized executive EV available.

Valid criticism of the adaptive brake regen. Luckily it has B mode that is easily conjured with a quick flick of the gear shift, and disabled with another, plus 3 levels of regen that don't use adaptive including a minimal mode to coast in a way that only non-permanent magnet motored EV's can. Thanks for this review and appreciate the effort made to really show the i4 in motion. Well done.
Despite the grill I’m starting to really like these
I drove one for an hour and it seems to be a great daily. Enough range with the edrive40 especially around town with the regen.
Great review, thank you. 🙂
Thank you!
Great review by the way. My order has gone in and is waiting for a build slot. 😁
Awesome! Thank you!
It really suits that colour 👌
The sound quality in the car stereo is important
Have you noticed the drive shaft bulging out of the floor ?? ")
Adaptive Cruise Control not standard as mentioned.
Does the Auto Cruise work? I test drove an IX and it did not seem to have it. Costs $92,000 here in the USA...
Yeah the video was wrong on this. Adaptive cruise is not standard. It requires the purchase of one of the tech packs.
A VERY NICE GOOD CAR ,-)
BMW ❤️
How much does it cost to fully charge this car please?
I live in Edmonton, Canada. I pay 4 cents per kWh. It’s about $4 cad to fully charge it
Would defenitely prefer this beamer before the M3.
?
@@christianolsen9781 Sorry for not being very clear with my comment... What I meant to say wsa that I prefer this BMW model to the TESLA MODEL 3. I realize M3 could also mean another BMW model, and that was a mistake not to be clear about that.
@@thomassoderqvist4666 then we totally agree 😂 - i4 is a much better looking car.
The actual BMW M3 in Touring version is very close to being my top
dream car even if I know fossil driven fueled cars are a dying breed. No electric car to match that yet, but I hope there will be 🤞
How does this compare to the top AWD Kia EV6?
It doesnt
@@ayesurewhynot2898 I wasn’t asking you.
Honestly this would be perfect for me just s shame about the price 😂
Wait for the i4 35 or the i3 35 😉
@@electriccarsworldnews1602 honestly where I live 😂you need the under 7second to 60 mark and 280 miles of real world range to go electric
Tesla M3 RWD base model gets 5.8 seconds 0 to 60 while RWD i4 edrive 40 gets 5.5 seconds. Not much of a difference. The Tesla AWD long-range model gets 4.2 seconds and AWD performance 3.1 seconds. However, both are AWD dual models compared to the i4 edrive 40 single RWD motor. Not a far comparison.
Ace review Though not a fan of those nostrils grille
Stare at them for a few days. They’ll grow on you.
Thank you!
It’s a hatchback though
i4 or Tesla 3/Y for me later this year.
It’s not a saloon..
Was thinking the same…
i had a test drive amazing car, gorgeous inside. and it felt like a car none of this speedo on a tablet rubbish in the middle of the seats
Feels like a car because they basically took the engine out and put a battery in 😁 no thought gone into this at all, it even has the drive shaft ridge through the centre 😂😂😂
The biggest appeal of this car is it actually looks nice, unlike every Tesla model which are just hideous against any objective measure. And then you have the shoddy build quality of a Tesla; terrible panel gaps; can’t even park itself, let alone “self-drive”; awful interface on that hideous iPad stuck in the middle; dangerous to drive as you can’t actually see the speed you’re doing (I’ve driven a model 3 so I have experienced this); cheap feeling/looking interior; next to no options so every car looks the same; made even more dangerous in the latest model with the removal of the indicator stalks; I could keep going….all they have going for them is efficiency.
@@emjbee101 I ended up with msport i4, I liked it that much
@@leeebbrell9 nice, any regrets? I’m getting one on Thursday. eDrive 40 in Brooklyn grey with all the options and packs option except the towbar (which I don’t want anyhow). 10 months old so a lot of the initial sting has dropped off it. Can’t wait!
I was waiting at some lights earlier and a new Model Y pulled up alongside me and the panel gap variations on it were awful. Visibly different widths in various places. Not cool at that kind of money.
Agree about the regen….I’ve driven this and a Model 3, and in the latter the strength of the regen is far more consistent and so easier to get used to…..whereas in the BMW (and it’s the same in the iX) the regen differs depending on what it detects around you, so you can never be surely just how much regen you’re going to get at one time.
That is called automatic regen which you can completely disable. Than u have full regen all the time!
If you knock the stick over to 'B' then it becomes normal regen, like the Tesla, and will bring you to a complete stop.
Rather walk than use a Tesla
An electric BMW that's desirable!💖
M3 a game changer? 🤔 uhhh...no.
EVs will always be for rich ppl not for one who thing petrol is enexpensive
If you think you are always going to be poor, then you will always be poor. You need to think more positively. Don't think "I can never afford that", but start to think "what do I need to do to be able to afford that"
When I was 21, I had a very small house and a rusty old car. 30 years later, I am earning a good wage and can now afford an EV. You can too if you set your mind to it. Push yourself out of your comfort zone. 😊
Try harder.
It's a pity that it was made for a diesel or petrol engine but it's still a nice EV
If you weren’t told that fact, how would you know. What difference does it really make.
@C L Mercedes eqs, ground up Ev has no frunk, you can’t even open the hood. Most other EVs have a “transmission tunnel” to some degree so you’re really just comparing how big it it. But again my point is, what difference does it REALLY make. Why is it “a pity it was made for diesel or petrol”. It’s either a good car or it’s not.
@C L frunk would be nice but you can live without. And do you really want to seat 3 adults in a luxury car anyways?
Its not a 3 row family hauler.
It looks great!
@C L I already own a 435d gran coupe, and it doesn't have a frunk. I have now ordered the i4, and the no-frunk doesn't bother me. Yes, they're a nice-to-have, but not essential. 😊
@@christianolsen9781 Yeah, suits me, the wife and our daughter, perfectly. And will tow the caravan.
