    Whether petrolheads like it or not, electric cars are the future. But BMW is taking away the fear for drivers who need to be weaned off the petrol pump.
    While dedicated electric models such as the Mercedes EQS, an Audi e-tron GT or even the iX from its own ranks promise different and new driving experiences, the old values count with the i4.
    The four-door 'coupe hatchback' promises more driving pleasure than any other electric car in this class and feels as much like a combustion engined car as it can.
    BMW has not developed its own ground-up design for the i4, but has used the basic structure of the best-selling 3 and 4-Series as the foundation for this car.
    With this in mind, can the i4 really take the fight to 'bespoke' EVs like the Tesla Model 3 and Polestar 2? Nicki Shields finds out.

    My experience with the i4M50 is that it is nearly as good as a Taycan 4S but costs £40K less. An i4 40 is actually all the car you need and I think it is good value. If you compare against the EV6, Ionic 5 its is comparable on Contract Hire or PCP numbers. The Tesla M3 and Polestar 2 are slightly cheaper. But refinement, ride and range look mighty impressive at first glance. If it can actually give 280 to 300 miles range then this is one of the most interesting steps forward as the 3 series and 4 series are such popular cars for those not wanting a SUV. Sporty handling, conventional saloon with a hatchback make it practical. I think BMW make have just got this right. You will see cheaper versions coming plus a Touring and a Convertable. But there is a long waiting list already! Great review! Thanks Nicki!

      I’m with you, and for me is just quality and the feel of everything that stand out on bmw, Mercedes benz etc, lights, wipers that actually wipe 😄, and little touches that make you feel good driving it which for me Tesla , Koreans cars for example are not close enough. But anyway we all like different things so all good 👍

    Great review. I have had 2 x BMW 5 series Touring 2 litre diesels in the past in my caravan towing days. I bought the BMW 330e as an intro to the EV world in October 20 and it has reinforced my commitment to EVs in general. Just over 10k miles and over 7500 on battery shows the economy stacks up. Yes the i4 is expensive relative to the ICE 4 series but factor in £0 vehicle tax and zero >£40k value tax £350 per year for 5 years) together with

    Reviewers need to start talking about the half-empty bonnet. It's tall, it's long, and it doesn't hold much of anything (especially in the RWD model). They stick the battery at the bottom, increasing the car height, and they keep the bonnet half empty. It makes no sense.
    They have 4 body styles for the ICE 3/4 series platform but can't even modify things a bit more for the EV.

    I got an BMW i3 REX back in January 2017 and drove it for 4+ years 110K+ miles and loved it - I would say with its carbon fibre shell and use of recycled materials it was ground breaking. It brought BMW to a whole new customer base - which appears they do not want, since even back in 2017, BMW were pushing out all sorts of exciting ideas for the i4, but instead all we get is a 4 series with an engine swap… So I am not sure why that took 5 years, and with Mercedes and VAG already producing dedicated EV platforms before you even get into the likes of the Polestar 2 and Kia EV6, it all feels a bit too little too late.

    Like the i4 form factor👍 (5 door hatch).
    - Gonna hang onto my i3REx, knowing it will be a future icon.
    - Range Extenders make so much sense (especially here in American West), but hard to explain to punters. Would love to see a REX version of i4 (not holding my breath).
    - Glad to see that lessons learned with i3 got passed along.

Cute little car, peppy, fun to drive, and best of all, she got it used with 18k miles on it for only $18000 USD. My Model 3..... well, we will just say I don't want to look at my bank statements right now.. haha... I love it though. Fits my personality perfectly, and it's perfect for me.... Lots of exciting new EVs coming though. The Electric revolution is definitely here to stay this time (Remembering the EV1)

    I like the i4. It's a shame that the i3 is on the way out because technically it's still years ahead of most cars when it comes to material construction and the interior design. I would like BMW to do a heavy refresh on the i3 and make it have more mass appeal, but I don't think they make much money on them so it's unlikely. Not sure if I would pick an i4 over a polestar 2 🤷‍♂️

    I think the design of the i4 is great and and I'm very pleased to see that BMW, along with a number of other manufacturers, have not given up on saloon cars! Sounds like it is based on the ICE version rather than being built on a dedicated EV platform, but I guess they will address this in the future. My guess is they've rushed this onto the market to avoid losing out to rivals.
    The i4 is certainly an expensive car, but on par with it's main rivals. It will certainly be on my short list when the lease on my current EV (Hyundai Kona) expires next year.
    I really like the exterior design and if the front grill was just a little less 'massive' it would be perfect I think! The interior seems to ooze the kind of quality BMW are renowned for and your video demonstrates very well that it's really quiet inside the cabin, even on B roads.
    Can't wait to get a test drive in one.

      good luck getting one as they will manufacture only about 30000 ix and i4 total in 2022. Making millions of them today would bankrupt BMW as I expect they make zero margin on them while cannibalizing their own 3- and 4-series sales that come with a margin. Manufacturing too many i4 would cost them a lot of earnings.

      On the price point. Yes it's high, but fuel is cheap. Charge overnight on a cheap rate and it can be < £5 for a full battery. Less servicing, less brake wear due to regen braking. No oil, sparkplug etc. So total cost of ownership (depending on your mileage) might be cheaper.

    Confused by the massive bonnet when they could have used some of that space for better rear leg room and cabin space overall. That said the styling is clearly aimed at enticing ICE driver to the EV side 🤣

    • @chillout1109
      @chillout1109 2 роки тому +2

      I think slowly and gradually enticing and transition ICE customers is exactly the point of these cars - the iX3 and the i4. BMW don't want to drop their customers into the full-blown BEV deep-end right from the word go. They will ease everyone into the electric world with these "conversions" first, before introducing clean sheet, ground up electric vehicles. If rumours are true, there will be a 5 Series based EV in the next 2-3 years when BMW introduces the current 5 Series replacement. The electric version of that car will perhaps be called the i5 in keeping with the current naming convention. Rumours also say the next 7 Series will introduce an electric version of its own based on the 7 Series ICE platform. Personally, I doubt the 7 Series ICE based EV rumor. I think the next 7 Series EV will just be based on the CLAR Modular Platform instead. The CLAR platform big enough, and is already being used in the BMW iX anyway, a big heavy luxury SUV. I think that platform can accommodate the next 7 Series EV comfortably. Sorry, I'm waffling.

    In Australia:
    Tesla model 3 $59,990 (300 miles range)
    Model 3 Long Range $73,200
    BMW i4 $99,900
    In Europe the price difference may be less.
    300 miles is enough range for most people, so the i4 is $40,000 more.
    A Tesla model S has travelled over 1,500,000 kms, the battery was swapped at 400,000 kms, so it has since travelled over 1 million kms on the battery. It has 2 new electric motors in that time. This is OLD batteries and OLD motors!

    BMW's are fantastic cars to drive for the most part. Arguably, they have been that way since the 70's with very few exceptions. However Chris Bangle took the company down a design path from which the company still has not recovered. It is very doubtful that Domagoj Dukec is going to help the company re-find its identity. In fact it looks like their designs are getting even worse. There are other great cars that don't make you cringe when you look at them.

      I know many people locally in Texas who want just that: a German EV that doesn't scream EV and who are long-time BMW drivers. My dealership has sold every one they were able to get and a nice number of orders for both the ix and the i4, meaning there is a market for those who want that straight up EV car, or the latter.
      Obviously you're not in either category, but there IS a nice market in the right cities. 😉

    • @tribalypredisposed
      @tribalypredisposed 2 роки тому

      @@heyitsmebee I think you and BMW are missing the point. EVs were nine percent of sales in Europe last year, eight plus percent of sales worldwide. That number is rising rapidly. BMW if they start to develop a dedicated EV platform now at best has ramped cars based on that new platform to full production in 2027, by which time easily 50% plus of worldwide sales will be EVs. So until 2027 at best, BMW has locked themselves into rapidly falling ICE car sales, which all legacy automakers will have, and not very good EV sales as every year sees still more significantly better competition in EVs and everyone else has dedicated EV platforms. Both the dealership and BMW face potential bankruptcy now because BMW has missed the point.
