    On 22nd of June it will be my one year of ownership of my i4. I have the same feeling about the seats. However, it's the seat bottom that is too hard for me. The back is fine. I got the Wokeby frunk which like you said for all practical purposes the use is for storing the flex charger. I live in CA so my Bridgestone performance summer tires are fine. Obviously no need for winter tires. I do prefer run-flats. I had them on my 530e and love that safety feature. I only have 5961 miles on my i4. So, I don't travel as much. However, only 12K miles is pretty good by CA standards. Unlike you I am salivating at the i5. Coming from the 530e to i4, the size difference is definitely noticeable. I still love the i4 but wish it was a bit roomier. Anyway. I enjoy your videos. They are fun to watch. Looking forward to more content.

    My i4 was delivered here in the US about seven months ago. Very happy with it. No real complaints. My only wish is that I could have the same EV chassis with a 3 series wagon (saloon) body. Coming from a Toyota 4Runner, I miss the space. If you're getting 320 miles of range, particularly with 19" wheels, that sounds great. Under optimal conditions, I look for around 300, which is still above the factory rating of 282 miles in the US. Thanks for the review. All the best!

    You can add manual precondition to the shortcuts menu from the Charging menu…..alternatively set the charging postcode and then find a DC charger near destination to get the car to precondition. My M Sport Pro has come with Michelin Pilot Sport 4S running the same wheels as yours.

    I have an X5 45e with adaptive headlights which block out oncoming traffic when on high beam and also turn when you turn the wheel. They aren’t the laser lights, though, so they still have the fake headlight next to the actual headlight.

    You forgot to mention the lack of rear wiper, that's my only gripe. But I do agree about the drive recorder points.
    I like to drive gently most of the time and I'm getting 4 miles/kwh consistently in my 6 months ownership, which is great especially since I am an urban dweller with very little time spent on the motorway. I have had more on a gentle drive down to Yorkshire one sunny day and got 4.3 over 150 miles. I didn't bother with the air suspension (pro pack) because I'm completely happy with the regular suspension.
    My final point, the oyster interior makes it look beautiful with san remo green.

    • @camping_101
      @camping_101  8 місяців тому +2

      Oh the rear wiper blades. How can I forget that. It is a pain indeed. I almost find that the car has gotten more efficient over this past year. On another note, you mentioned the standard suspension. That’s probably why my ride height is so high. I have air suspension which does rise during driving and then lowers when I park.

      I owned a sister car, 4 series GC for 9 years now and not once have I ever really wished for the rear wiper. I clean the glass with diluted alcohol when I wash the car and put a bit of wax and all water slides off as I drive. That has been a complete non issue for me.

    great summary! maybe next year I will do one own owning an iX1.
    A key issue there is that the app is limited: multistop route planning, reviewing drives "what was I doing good/bad last trip" and not giving me enough feedback when at a DC charger: no "5 minutes to go, walk back to the car". notification. but: the latest iphone app update is a real improvement if it works on your phone. in particular: you get the charging curve for all your charges, to see how your last charge went, to understand how to do it faster etc. And you can now add a view of the car to the iphone lock screen widgets so can see how a charge is going without having to log in to the phone and then the app -ideal when you are at a costa in a service station. Lots of scope for more, especially route planning, where I've embraced A Better Route Planner with a bluetooth OBDII dongle for longer journeys -extra cost and hassle.
    wishing you another excellent year, even it's sucked in the UK for camping.

    Re: Your complaint about tires on ice: Any sporty tire is not going to be good on ice. Sports tires are made up of a harder composite of rubber and when it gets cold they become rigid and won't grab the ice. Winter tires are made of a softer type of rubber, and also have much better siping (the thin lines cut into the rubber). This allows the tire to deform better and grip the surface. Due to soft rubber, winter tires will also wear out faster if you leave them on after the ice/snow clears.

    Hi C101, I have a back problem too. 2 prolapsed discs at L3 & L4. The first options I ticked were the comfort plus pack and elec memory seats. I have never had a lumbar support in a BMW before, and decided I would have one now. But I have always bought used BMWs that have already got the elec mem seats. The infinite level of adjustment is wonderful.
    Elec mem seats with lumbar, should be standard in a car of this calibre. Manually adjustable seats belong in a fiesta, in my opinion.
    I kept the cost down by speccing the Sensatech and Alcantara seats, instead of full leather. They are quite good, and the alcantara grips you in the corners, but does tend to snag your T-shirt when getting in the car. But that saving allowed me to get the Comfort Plus pack. I have the standard lights too, and no techy pack, drive recorder or auto steer etc.
    As for the headlights, I think one is dipped beam, and one is one is main beam. But again, the top end lights should be standard. Put the lesser lights into the 320s etc lower in the range.And yes, the Hankooks are NOT runflat. They are standard tyres, with an "XL" for extra load. I wint over a pothole a couple of months back, and blew a hole in the side wall. I feel that the side walls of the Hankooks are a little softer to the touch, than say a Michelin Pilot Sport.
    I may get all seasons on mine once I wear these out, but not sure they will be as efficient as the Hankooks.

    Moving back to the Uk later this year and can’t decide if I should just go 440i or I4. Never had electric before and cost of charging in Uk makes me wonder if it’s worse the hassle going electric. Finding chargers, waiting for charging etc

    • @camping_101
      @camping_101  8 місяців тому +2

      Too many factors to mention here to help you make the choice but I’ll mention some:
      Electric prices are coming down so no worries there.
      If you plan to live in a city like London, there are chargers everywhere, even in the ground under the pavement. So no worries there. Same if you plan to charge at home if you will be suburban or rural.
      If you are going on long journeys, it depends on where you plan to go. Going up north along the M1, M40 or M6, you will be fine. Going south towards Cornwall and having to deal with the M3 or A303, will give you nightmares. It’s at that point you’ll wish you had a petrol car.
      Hope this helps.

    • @SteveLoughran
      @SteveLoughran 8 місяців тому +1

      If you can charge at home in the uk you can get off peak rates and pay 10p/kWh. So yes, public chargers cost more, but in day to day use you don't need them.

    Nice review. Thank you. Personally, I thought the 40i was a bit lethargic as it is a heavy car so I’m thinking about the 50i. Could this perhaps be on your radar as your next vehicle as some of the options on the 40 are standard on the 50. Looking forward to your feedback. Cheers. 👍😎🇦🇺

      The 40i is quite fast to be honest. It’s faster than even the M140i that I once owned. Actually, I know I said I won’t but…..I’m actually thinking about the i5. It offers all the space and specs. The cost is a bit much though so I’ll check the used market next year.

      @@camping_101 Agreed on the space, just not the looks of the i5. Correction on the “slower” i4 I previously tested as is was the 35i, not the 40i. However, to get what comes as standard on the 50i, you’re nearly paying the same upgrading the 40i. At least here in Melbourne Australia. Just the reduced range is the only negative I can see with the 50i. My younger brothers have Tesla 3 performance models so I am wanting something that doesn’t look like a taxi. Have you had a chance to test the Kia EV6 GT? As I’m not sure if it’s just for Australians as the suspension has been tuned for our roads with its adaptive suspension and steering.

    Great honest review, many thanks. I'm looking to buy one soon. Personally, I think they look stunning, especially for an EV. My main concern was depreciation. I noticed a one-year-old model selling for £50k with hardly any miles. To buy new locally, they're asking for £80k (full specs), so that's a shocking £30k depreciation in just one year.

Get the 19” wheels but change the tyres. Run flats provide good security but I’m sure you’ll notice a slight discomfort with firmer tyres. I’d probably go for the leather seats too and give the sansatec a pass. Hope this helps.

    Unfortunately, you were a "victim" of the German car options-nightmare. I have all options and I, fortunately, don't have the same issues you mention here. You can get lumbar support, but maybe not with the regular, non-electrically operated seats that you have (what is that button you have on the side-front section for?). You can also spec the headlights such as that you get cornering, adaptive headlights, and so on. Some of these options can be activated on some cars through the BMW store though, check which options are available for you in the app.
    Regarding the charging speed, it's true what you say, but it's both related to the pre-conditioning (as you mentioned, which it does activate automatically if you navigate to a fast charger, and can be activated manually as well) and the charging curve. So it's not like that you're gonna get 205 Kw at any battery charge state --it's like this by design.
    On the things I have at the top of my dislikes is actually the sound with the HK system. It's very much in-your-face and the subwoofer is absolutely inadequate for its location. So this is something I'm looking to upgrade in the coming weeks. I did not have this issue with other BMW's. The G21, which has the same audio system, sounds a lot better given the location of the subwoofers under the seat and not in the trunk as in this car.
    Finally, I'm also thinking like you: I'm not even close to getting ready to part ways with the car (an M50) after 8 months of ownership and 11000 miles.

    Hi C101.
    I have a question for you on the topic of dislikes. I found out the hard way that my I4 has a "feature" whereby you can lock someone inside the car and they will be unable to exit unless they have their own key. i.e. the car will deadlock and you cannot open the doors or unlock them from the inside!!!
    This came about on a trip I took with my wife here in Australia. She had my key and we stopped for a toilet break. She hopped out with the key and as she walked away the car automatically locked with me still inside. Now I am an engineer and well versed in technology in all its forms and I addressed the problem methodically. I still had my phone which gave me an escape path via the BMW app should I need it but I was astonished when I found that I could not open the door by conventional means, so I researched it. Tried all the obvious options, etc, and came up with a blank.
    So, check the owners manual and they actually say (page 85) "Warning! ........ Do not lock the vehicle from the outside when there is someone inside it."
    I expect it's the same for all new BMWs.
    My question to you, is yours the same in the UK? I don't think it is in the USA. I would think that it would be banned under Australian Design Rules, but apparently not.
    So, what about in the UK???
    Cheers

      I'm actually not sure. I've walked away with the key in my pocket before but quickly remember that the rest of the family is in the car so I quickly press the unlock button so that they are not locked in. I mainly did this because as soon as one of them moves, it sets off the alarm. I'll have a look and let you know. I'll use my son a guinea pig.

    • @pcw0652
      @pcw0652 6 місяців тому

       @camping_101 If your car will lock by touching the bars on the door handle, you can check it just by yourself without having to lock your son in the car:
      - hop in the car and open the drivers window.
      - put the key outside the car on the roof (so that you can still reach it when you need).
      - reach down to touch the door handle on the outside to lock it.
      - you should then find that you are now locked in.
      If you lock the car with the key inside it will still let you exit. I have my car set to fold the mirrors when it's locked and that is the best test as to whether it is fully locked. If the mirrors fold in, I'm locked in. If not then I'm not.
      Have fun. Make sure that no one nicks your key when you put it on the roof.

      With incentives in the US, a Model 3 long range AWD is about $44k. The wheel selections are horrible, and upcharges for a color other than white is amusing, However the white Tesla for $44k USD, IMO, is better equipped, quicker, has longer range, and has a superior charging network when compared to BMW's offering. BMW has been working on their "idrive" systems for at least 15 years, and idrive is still way behind the curve when it comes to useability. I've owned BMWs since Idrive1 days, so apparently I'm a glutten for punishment. I currently own a 23 430 which was only avaialble with idrive7 when When I decided to purchase the BMW, the BMW was about $10k less than the Teslas. The pricing equation has changed considerably in 7 months, and certainly favors Tesla now. The BMW voice interface is horribly slow, almost to the point that it's not practical to use. I guess the biggest thing that ticks me off about BMW and idrive is that the idrive OS is tightly coupled to the hardware in the car. Idrive7, isn't upgradable to idrive8 or idrive9 which, btw, is being released in the X1 later this year! If I want a more current idrive, the solution is to buy a new car

    I own a 23 430 GC - basically the same car as yours but US ICE spec. I actually couldn't believe that BMW didn't include cornering lights standard on this car, and was less than amused when I turned down my 1st dimly lit side street. My 430 was close to $60k USD, and I didn't consider that BMW would put a premium on a safety feature such as corning lights. Of all the cars I've owned over the past 30 years, and most of them being BMW, the 4 series desperately needs corning lights, and I don't think it should be a $1,000 USD "option".

      Thanks for your comments. I didn’t consider Tesla because of 3 reasons. I am quite a fussy person when it comes to build quality. I would notice uneven panel gaps from a mile awayay and would take issue with it. Second reason was that unless you wanted to lease, you had to buy them by paying the full amount upfront. Finally, it’s quite a bit more expensive to insure Teslas here in the UK. Maybe one day I would consider stepping away from BMW but not just yet.

      @@camping_101 Thanks for the response. I know that purchasing homes and vehicles are marketly different in the UK and the States. Having to pay in full for a car would have been a deciding factor for me without question. When I purchased my BMW , the 430 GCe was about $10k USD less than Tesla.I thought the Tesla was over priced, and it was! The Tesla build quality of 4 or 5 years ago, and what is currently offered are night and day difference, but I undertand your comment! Again, nicely done video. Enjoy!

    Hi. You will not c Range above 320 caused of your configuration. Sport package, rear spoiler and 20inch rims reducing your range by at least 65miles. If you buy runflats, range will be reduced more.

    Run flats are one of the worst introductions to motoring, it makes the ride of the car even firmer that it needs to be, especially our terrible UK roads, but adds very little, even nothing to the handling of the car, BMW are fazing out run flats out long last , they are also more expensive to replace. How often to you get a puncture 🤔, don't want a cars dynamic abilities compromised on the very very rare occasion I may get a puncture.
    If you do, use the tyre weld system provided to fix it , simple 👍
