I love the fact that this looks like and physically feels like a regular 4 series. I really don’t like the fact that so many electric cars are designed to look minimalist and space age. BMW have done a great job with this. This is the first electric car I would consider buying if I were buying an electric car.

Some people want an electric car that’s like a space ship but many people like the benefits of being electric but want to keep with something familiar which they have done really well with the i4

Great in-depth review. Having driven both the i4 M50 and the edrive 40. I agree with Joe. The edrive 40 is the sweet spot. The specification is all-important here! It is very easy to go mad, as your car was tested to over-spec the car, and then the M50 comes better value. As it comes with many options which are extra on the edrive40. Technology plus is important, heated steering wheel and to get the adaptive suspension you need the M sport model and the M sport pro pack. Residuals will be strong on these cars, as the batteries will go the distance - should see 150,000 miles easily. The M50 will reliably gove 200 to 220 mile range. The edrive 40 will see a real range of 260 to 310 mile range. Charging at home on a 7Kw charger will cost around £7 to £10. Given the range that with today's fuel costs will make the payback over time with stronger residuals a more compelling case. The best thing about these cars is the ride comfort and refinement. For a long-distance car, knowing the locations of the high power chargers, you will arrive at your destination relaxed and knowing that you could not have got there for less money! The waiting list is pretty much 12 months or longer, so values will be very strong, so expect good finance deals. BMW will not be able to meet demand!
Maintenance costs are super low with these cars, brake pads and disc wear will be very low, using B mode. Only pollen filters to be changed and brake fluid every 24 months is essential. Over 4 to 5 years this will be such a cheap car to run. I really liked it after 20,000 miles in a Taycan! That's a recommendation.

Where are you getting this £7 to 10 figure? e-drive 40 has 83.9 KWH capacity, at current prices of 28/KWH it will cost about £23. Even at the prior year 14p rate it will be about £12. If you opt for a economy 7 rate, the other electricity you use during the day and early evening will incur higher costs. Now you have EV charge installation costs and significantly higher costs compared to a diesel equivalent. You wouldn't recover the costs in the life of the car if you drive 10k miles a year.

Thank you for the feedback on the video, I used a calculator on BMWs website which you entered price per kw etc and it gave you a number (unfortunately I have tried finding the calculator again and it’s missing) i think the reason for owning an EV is not just the cost to charge but also the general running costs are less and most importantly the impact to the environment (I know this is a bit of a hot topic with the impact of mining rare metals etc)

Simply no, its main competitor is the Model 3 - if you are looking for an EV, the petrol 4 series isn't a competitor at all. You don't go to the dealer and just buy whatever is available. You make a choice: do I wanna go electric or not

Great video especially itemising factors regarding a potential transition to EV. My personal observations are somewhat different but it's all good for different aspects of the subject and debate.
I am in a similar situation and am not able to charge at home -
though I may be able to run a long extension cable from my house to the roadside when I can park outside. That said it wouldn't deter me from purchasing the i4 as I would be confident of finding a Pulse charging facility etc during
my 300+ mile travelling to and throw over a 2 wks or so period and especially considering 2 yrs free charging - No brainer as I don't have a Petrol station at my home either!
Your buddy Joe Achilles makes some interesting observations regarding the M50 it being too heavy, and too fast! Also somewhat confused with what it is trying to be ... Of course the M50 has an additional motor, 4 wheel drive setup and bigger wheels therefore naturally it will be a heavier vehicle. Regarding the 40 M Sport Package vs M50 version one would choose the 40 M Sport Package as the sweet-spot and save money = £10,800. I specd a Fair but avoided kicking the ring out of the configurator on the 40 M Sport Package and exited at: £63,234 also exact same spec on M50 version at: £67,654. However, for your extra outlay of £4,420 the M50 has in addition the following Inclusive kit:
    1. 204 bhp Increased Power
    2. Dual Motor 4 Wheel Drive
    3. Driving Assistant
    4. Electric front memory seats
    5. M Adaptive Suspension with Rear Air Suspension
    6. 19 Inch Wheels
I guess one would have to figure out whether it's value for money at an extra £4k... That all said I had to laugh at his comment about the WONDERFUL sound of the Porsche 992 GTS which at a mere £114,800 I for one am not sure that represents good value with practically similar performance! Granted, the Porsche is .3 secs quicker at 3.4secs 0-60 vs the i4 M50 3.7secs ... However, being electric it probably
feels even quicker! In closing - I could live quite happily with the Hans Zimmer engine sound track and save myself £49k over the price of the Porsche! yougotthis
At the end of the day there are always debate aspects for and against and it will always come down to what one feels is best for them and of course their wallet/purse!

Really pleased you enjoyed the video and great to hear your view point. The issue with charging is manufacturers do not recommend using any form of extension cable although I have looked at some 3rd party companies do 15m extension cables from a home charger. I have got a
Mach E coming next week for a week and don’t
Have a home charger and the 1 and only local charger has been out of order for 5 weeks 😳.

      @@DamoDrives Hi Damo
Some valid points you've mentioned especially the 3rd party companies 15m extension cables from a home charger unit... Fantastic info I for one had no idea and would make a realistic
prospect with my house and parking situation. I also fully agree with your observations regarding the infrastructure of the charging network in the UK... In my ignorance I often forget not everyone
has the network we have here in London... In my neighbourhood of Hackney/Islington I can almost walk in any direction and come
across a charging unit in 5mins or 10mins at worst...
The government stated when they stopped the EV Subsidy that they would use the cash for the charging infrastructure deployment instead ... I thought if that's the truth fair game... However, you will know more than me that they have fallen short and some countries in the EU are still receiving £6,600 equivalent (Germany)
and I wouldn't be surprised if they had a better rollout of their charging network infrastructure ... Welcome to Brexit Britain my friend - but that's a conversation reserved for another day!

I have not driven a Tesla so would have to go on other peoples reviews. I think in general it seems the Tesla is faster and feels more futuristic but the i4 feels more like a traditional 4 series and
      Has better build quality

    • @mike_kokuz17
      @mike_kokuz17 2 роки тому +2

I’ve driven both the Model 3 Perf (2021) and the I4 e40 and can safely say the I4 is better in every respect apart from the charging network you get with a Tesla. However, you really have to ask yourself how often you will need to use the supercharger network when you have a realistic range of 300+ miles on the I4. I’m an M2 owner and can safely say the I4 feels just like a normal RWD BMW. Of course my view is biased but I couldn’t justify the cost of a Model 3 or even Model Y which share a similar price bracket to the I4. All I would say is go and test drive both and once you get over the acceleration hype, you’ll start to see where the BMW shines (especially with it being a hatch). Yes it’s not a bespoke platform but I like that it blends in and wouldn’t make much use of a frunk. There’s still plenty of room in the back, especially if the rear seats are rarely used or are for smaller people.
Unfortunately there isn’t as much steering feel as in my M2 or older BMW’s which is to be expected but still enough to know what’s going on with the front end (plenty of turn in). Mine was running hankooks so with some better rubber, I’m sure it can be improved. Weight is also a non-issue as the figures suggest, perfect compromise between a great handling car and luxury suspension with the adaptive option - the weight is barely noticeable and easily manageable under braking and cornering. Something you won’t get from the Tesla as you bounce down the road trying to open your glovebox from a touchscreen. I can see the hype with Teslas and why some people enjoy the tech but if you’re more interested in an electric car that doesn’t scream electric and drives like BMW, the I4 is the way to go. But… I would still advise you to drive both and choose for yourself as opinions are subjective 🙂
