Thanks for the review Bob! A couple pointers on your camera set ups from a professional DP. Fix your focus and exposure on manual. You can use anything like a newspaper to set your focus and exposure on at the position where your face is going to be. Also, get a POLA for those outside the window shots. That way you can dial out most of the reflection. Love your reviews!

absolutely true! Somehow that was true for the Alfa's of old, with off center glue-on plates as well, but most of the time it is a necessary evil in car design!

Great review. The transmission tunnel is there for when they make the petrol / diesel variants on the same assembly line. One body, 3 versions.
Fantastic review as always Bob . This is the dream electric car for me . I have the current shape 5 series , was going to get a 530e but not sure if there’s any point in the hybrid when full electric is the future. This gets me excited about electric cars. It is a fair bit more expensive than a Tesla model 3 but for looks and quality I think this is way better 65 grand is too rich for me maybe get a used one in a couple of years. Keep up the good work 👍

I have the i4 M50 ordered since last July. It’s built & arrives on our lovely little island in the next week or two. Can’t wait to get my hands on it!

Had a test drive a couple of week ago and think the car is amazing.
Heard a few comments about torque steer on the M50 and it is noticeable. Apparently Bmw may be doing an over the air update.
I have ordered this colour - looks fantastic.
@@grahamcarr445 there’s a batch of M50s coming in the next week or two. As far as I’ve heard BMW Ireland don’t have any dates for first customer deliveries of the eDrive 40s yet.
Test drove the M50 last week, it's good. I wound up ordering an eDrive40 though. Work better for my life and amount of driving I do.
Great, entertaining review. Just ordered the M35 version a couple of weeks ago. Don’t need the slightly better 0-60 or mileage. Didn’t think this never ecar guy would ever change his mind but the test drive blew me away🎉
eDrive35 is enough even for long journeys. BMW charges pretty fast, performance is more than enough.
Nice video. Does look a compelling package. I guess if you rate this as an equal to the Taycan, that goes for the etron GT as well? Hoping to drive the i4 soon before making a decision between the three of them.

I test drove in January after ordering an i4 40 with good high spec in Oct last year. Originally March then a vague Q2 and in late Feb asked again and no build date. Now factory closing down as no wiring harnesses from …. yes… Ukraine. VAG group in the same boat so closing factories! Order cancelled and gone for a used EV (no make/model admitted here) so will wait a year or so until supply chains are addressed.

Frunk is nonsense. What's the point? There could be a side trunk aka srunk. There is a good trunk that fits all you need. Can't see a point of getting under the hood. Actually there's a wokeby aftermarket frunk, but I don't see a need
The transmission tunnel is a major structural component and can't be just removed. Bespoke EVs don't have it because rigidity is designed into the floorpan and surrounding structures at the design stage - some even use the batteries in a structural way. You need to retain the tunnel here because the I4 was designed to be either ice or electric powered. Nice car despite this 👍
As consolation, the tunnel serves as additional space for a battery pack.

Hi Bob, they just brought out the i4 35, I’m a company car driver so this opens a door for me to get into an i4 but there are no reviews of this base sport model only American or non English European any chance you could review the base entry level i4? As it’s just sub £50k That would amazing 😊🙏
I can tell that it is very decent. 400 km is enough to get between chargers, it charges fast, a bit lighter, still fast enough for a normal person use
The car must drive really well for Bob not to rave against absence of buttons...
PS why this short, Bob? You could've easily added 10 minutes actually reviewing and detailing the car, its specs, some B-roll of different colors of the car, etc. Normally you are more vested in doing that, and this car merits that even more given your enthusiasm, right? And I love long form pieces on YT, but that is my personal preference.
It's only a first drive review so I only get about an hour with the car, I have the M50 version soon and that will be detailed with everything you need in a longer version.
It's a great car and I'm willing to forgive the lack of buttons because it all still works well and it's still one click for temperature changes
But can u do a heel n toe downshift on it tho ?

Tesla just upped there prices by thousands ! Long range model 3 same price as the BMW I4 40 now !!! BMW for me can’t stand poor build quality of Tesla , imagine needing a checklist after spending 63k on a Tesla ? Not a BMW issue .

I think I've said it before but you're the only motoring journalist with a balanced view on EVs.
As good as the i4 is, I can't get past the horrible slab of a "binnacle" this has. Bleaargh. I've experienced this in a Mercedes and I just don't get it. What's wrong with gauges mixed with screens? Were they unclear or hard to read? I'm all for new tech but some things just scream how car manufacturers have run out of ideas
I actually never look at the display, there is an amazing HUD - projection on the window. After 3 months I can say that the multimedia is nicely designed.

Tesla has an impressive charging network in Ireland, when you buy a Tesla that’s partly what your also buying into. The i4 seems like an excellent car, would be tempted ! Now if BMW had its own chargers then they would sell like hot cakes
@@rustyfox81 Tesla has one 250 kW Supercharger and 4 older 150 kW locations. Ionity has 5 locations (6 stations) with 350 kW where the BMW can get over 200 kW. 👍
@@abraxastulammo9940 150kw is enough, it’s the number of stalls that matters, and there up time. The best charger for you depends on where you live and the possible long journeys you might take.

Collecting this model next week 420d, not ready for EV. Its brooklyn grey and this has M pro pack which gives it the adaptive suspension hence the ride quality even on our roads.
2 yrs ago moved to a Model 3 from an F10 M5 and its been the best car Ive ever owned. As a BMW fanboy I looked at i4 but I cant reconcile how ugly the front grill design is. I'll hang onto my Tesla with hopes that BMW LCI's the i4 and improves the ugly looks. I love the thought of an i4 rwd version. Just wish BMW got back to offering style again.

5.7 seconds to 100km/h the website says. Not great
0-100kph times are kind of outdated these days because you can build a car to go fast but they all feel the same. Torque is what makes it "feel" fast and the torque figures are good, especially on the M50 version
German cars are always underrated
No normal people need more, it's very fast, I never use 100% of power.
I fail to understand why the revised, petrol or diesel, Three Series does not get a shifter, but the i4 full EV does. Makes no sense.
As an owner of a G20 M340i xDrive, what they have done to this interior turns me right off. Dislike the screen, no HVAC buttons etc. It’s chasing Tesla, open ergonomics and minimal interaction. And if I wanted that, I’d just go and buy a Tesla.

Too bad the electrification of this car is an afterthought. No frunk, transmission tunnel, traditional gear selector... Time for BMW to make an from the ground up EV 3 series sedan and touring, the 3 series being the bread and butter of BMW. Unbelievable that we are 9 years after the introduction of the Tesla model S and BMW still hasn't done this...
Some people just want a normal car that just so happens to be an EV, not a car trying to LARP as a space ship

Definitely needs the right color to make the nose as low key as possible.
But it's so ugly (imho).
Bmw seem to want to make their cars ugly by making the grill bigger for no reason . Bmw badge , worse screens than the ice , looks like bought the screens as a joblot and glued it in, trans mission tunnel for no reason , no frunk despite large bonnet room?, only a car for a driver , no good for children , room in back crap , only 2 seater in back fir such a big car just ridiculous, poor back doors , Porsche comparison storage , it’s ugly as well. Price and range ? , just a mess , sound just rubbish , it’s a passenger car , work car , not a race car

Name a car where 3 adults feel comfortable in the back seat. Even Tahoe doesn't feel good. Why do people need a trunk in 2022? Nobody needs that in 2023 😅
