In this video I compare Lone Wolf Blues Company Jason Ricci signature vs Hohner/SE Harpblaster HB52 harmonica microphones.
Lone Wolf Blues Company Jason Ricci signature
    Pros:
    - Better bass response
    - More natural clean tone
    - standard 1/4 guitar jack input. Cables are available at any venue.
    - Fit standard shure clips (both wide for wireless and narrow for wired microphones), available at any venue.
    - Works better with pitch and modulation effects
    Cons:
    - slightly bigger
    - Not a perfect response to hand effects
    Hohner/SE Harpblaster HB52
    Pros:
    - better response to hand effects
    - Sound really great with distortion
    - Locked connection
    - Very lightweight and easy to hold
    Cons:
    - weaker bass response
    - Dirtier clean sound
    - XLR connector, need adapter or special cable which is not available at any venue.
    - Need a special custom clip
If I have to choose one - my choice is Jason Ricci signature. However I like to own HB52 and use it for one or two songs in a gig to use more hand effects. What is your choice?

Thank you, that was just what I needed to hear. I built my own. So much to learn.

I am by no means a harmonica player, but I am a recording studio guy among other things. Listening to these microphones side-by-side, I have to agree with your conclusions, especially regarding how they handle effects. In my opinion, however, I like the wider range of capabilities of the Harpblaster, especially with the seal that you get with the Harpblaster. That said, I have seen people comment on the need to use a mic stand for their harp-playing, so that one needs a custom mic clip for the Harpblaster would be a major negative!
As to their overall tone qualities, I like the Hohner better, in that it has a somewhat "thinner" sound, if you will -- maybe because I'm an old-school guy (in my 60s), so I grew up on the "thinner" sound (more treble). But my tastes are not others' tastes, and since people like you are the players, you would get priority over my sensibilities.
I would be afraid of bumping the volume control on the Lone Wolf, but then again, I am a real klutz, and over the period of years, I have bumped more than my fair share of controls on a mixer, radio station pots, etc., to very disastrous results!
You are truly a great harp player, Sir, and I very much respect your opinions on this subject. Cpacibo (sorry I don't have a Cyrillic keyboard!) for your efforts in making this video. I learned a lot! Greetings from the USA.

I’m only learning harmonica but can see where the lone wolf design is more practical w/ cables and mike stands 👍 I can also see where some resistance on the volume knob could help avoid sudden unwanted bumps by hand. Great playing they all sounded good to my ear

The bass response from the Lone Wolf Jason Ricci, when played with the low tuned harp, sealed the deal...both are useful mics, but if I could only have one, Lone Wolf is my choice, too, Boris.

Bass response is great if you’re playing solo, but it’s sorta a moot point when amped… it’ll get lost in the mix with a band. He needed to squeeze his hands a bit more to get the bottom end to register on the HB52. I have them both, and love them both for different uses.

The thing I like about the XLR connector is that is LOCKS. I use a alr cable down to a lo-to-hi impedance (guitar jack) into my pedal board.
The Ricci mic sounds similar to the Audix Fireball, to me, anyway.

      @etaborya  Рік тому +1

Ricci mic don’t sound similar to Fireball, much more bass, much better hand effects

Thank you for comparison. Lone Wolf sounds more robust than HBB. Ill need to watch Ricci on hand effects to see if his mic can be pushed. I play tightly cupped And with hand effects. Again thank you!

    • @norfolknwhey4787
      @norfolknwhey4787 Рік тому

It can definitely be pushed and sounds great for clean and gritty playing. It’s hard to say one is better than the other, because they’re different animals altogether. The HB lends itself to more Chicago/dirty cupped playing, where the Ricci has a very crispy response and lends itself to his style of fast articulations and triplets. Each has its uses, with the HB52 being more dynamic with regards to shaping the sound with hands and embouchure.
I use both, but if I could only have one, I would actually pick the HB-52 because it will do everything the Ricci mic will, and opens the door for more hand shaping and really thick tones as a result. It’s pretty easy to see the OP is a bit biased towards the Ricci mic, you can tell he’s putting more energy into playing it vs the hohner.

    So
Boris what is that effects pedal device called that you are using??? So Jason Ricci has a big pedalboard that makes similar sounds... But yours is smaller and does all that without having to buy so many foot pedals... That sounds good... Where do they sell those I want one? Right now I am using a DD3 foot pedal but I would love to mess around on that that you are using. I'm wondering what it cost and it would be neat to try it on an electric violin to see what it would sound like with that organ sound and other sounds it makes... I'm surprised violin players are not trying it... So cool......

It is regular modern guitar multi-fx Line6 HX Stomp, best pedal I ever owned. It takes some time to get used to layout and programming but you can do a lot here.

Привет. Спасибо большое за обзор. Подскажи где купить держатель-крепеж для Harp Blaster.
Борис, если есть возможность, запиши пожалуйста голос через harp blaster. Интересно как он звучит на вокале? Иногда есть необходимость подпеть через тот же микрофон что и гармошка. Заранее спасибо
