  • Hohner Trumpet Call Harmonica Review
    This video is on a very weird and old Harmonica by Hohner called the Trumpet Call and I am going to show you all this weird and rare harmonica in this video. I will also show some of the other harmonicas my grandson owns to give you some comparisons. I hope you all like it.

    Making hand wahs with this particular harp is futile at best. One needs but one horn to mute/unmute to get effective wahs. Crazy to try to do it with multiple horns unless one has more than two arms, two hands.
    What IS cool about the Trumpet Call harp is that one could put resonators in each of the bells/horns so as to produce reverb. Yes, REVERB! Very easy to rig, if you have a bit of imagination. The reverb boosts the sound of the harp, it amplifies the harp's sound. I think a lot of people have overlooked the obvious regarding horns attached to harps. There are several variations. NONE of those variously-horned harps have ever created reverb. And it's soooo simple to make a resonator to fit into each horn, inexpensive, too. The resonator[s] allow for sounds NOT to be confused with "echo". It is reverb, sustained at that. Simple, effective, hidden and LOUD.
    That the Trumpet Call harps are already "echo" or "octave" harps makes their volume louder. They would be louder than a single row, 10 hole, 20 reed diatonic harmonica because there are twice as many reeds employed. It isn't the horns making the Trumpet Call louder than other harmonicas, it's because of the amount of reeds employed. Pretty simple. The horns are for looks, a marketing gimmick, nothing else. Amazing what people get suckered into believing. The past few years ought to tell us that.

      Yes, your comment is all correct. I am not a harmonica player . Lol .. I can really I only play one song on it. I reviewed it because it was very cool and different from what's out. I agree that to make the "Wa-Wa" sound with your hand is hard to do, if not impossible with one hand, but again, I'm not a harmonica player.
      Your ideas are actually very good ones and I don't think it would be that hard to do so I'm going to pin your comment in case any one else might want to t take on this task.
      Thanks again for watching and for the comment

    I could not attach a photo of an "original" trumpet call harmonica made in about 1907 but the box was cardboard and said The Trumpet Call and under that said: Most Powerful Organ-like Tone and bottom line said Made by M.HOHNER Germany. The re-issued novelty trumpet call came in the wooden box. I have one as well.

    • @HayesTech
      @HayesTech  3 роки тому +1

      Well then maybe it's is a reissu but it was reissued but the same firm, Hohner. But from everything I found in my research, ours was a later model and it did come in a wooden case. And yes I am aware of the knock-offs. But this still made by Hohner and it's not junk. I've seen the look alikes out and they are indeed cheap knock offs.

      @@HayesTech MAKE RESONATORS TO SLIP INSIDE ALL OR MOST OF THE HORNS FOR REAL VOLUME INCREASE. These harps are not really any louder than a standard harp without horns, until you add resonators to the horns. I play many types of harmonicas, this is just a showpiece, no real benefit to its design, soundwise. You may think you hear it better, and you may, but the sounds are nothing special. A real harmonica player can make any harmonica sing loud or soft. Loud is not synonymous with talent.

    • @HayesTech
      @HayesTech  3 роки тому +1

      @@roberttemple2521
      I didn't say loud was synonymous with talent. Heck, I cant even play the harmonica. And yes you are correct about it seeming to be louder because it is directed towards you more, but perspective is a large part of sound. I never said that I was a harmonica player or even an expert but rather just wanted to show it to those who never saw one. I am a guitar player and nothing more.
      Thanks for the comment.

    How can you determine a real 1907-1930 trumpet caller from a 2012 remake ?

    • @HayesTech
      @HayesTech  3 роки тому

      That I'm not sure of. But the one I showed in this video was my grandson's other great grandfather, on his father's side of the family. When he passed away it was given to Noah, my grandson.
      His great grandfather had it most of his life so I can't say for sure when it was made but I know for sure it was way, way before 2012.

    • @HayesTech
      @HayesTech  3 роки тому

      I think 220 is the model number. I've been told that Hohner made these early on and then quit making them for a while. When they reintroduce them they came in a wooden case instead of the heavy cardboard cases the early one came in. I also know the earlier release are worth a little more. To me though, it is not about the money. It's a very interesting item and a piece of history that will never be sold by me. I got it out today and played it just because it's an interesting piece of musical history. And it still sounds great for is age.
