Also side note have you tried hairfood shampoo? I’ve just started using it and it’s been working magic for my curls combined with my itchy sensitive scalp.

I use Kristin Ess products & I’m sorry the scents bother you, but keep sending e-mails bc she really listens. That’s how she made the clarifying shampoo & conditioner bc consumers kept asking! She truly wants to make her customer happy! 😄

I loved hearing your thoughts on this line! I use the shampoo, conditioner, and curl jelly from the curly line and really enjoy all of them! I personally have never noticed the scent. I can't wait to try the shampoo and conditioner you have. I'm just so happy this line came to Target. I love the packaging and it seems so classy and a little high-end for a reasonable price tag!

I love the curl mask, defining jelly, and gray curl cream. I love the smell too. I like more perfume-y smells so it’s good for me! My favorite curl products I’ve used in awhile

I've only tried the orange conditioner, but it was pretty good! Not amazing, but for the price it was nice! I liked the packaging, smell, and style overall too

I love the way you do these reviews! Seeing your hair at the end of the day and what it looks like in the morning is so helpful. Kristin Ess does have a lot of fragrance but fortunately it doesn’t bug me and I like the scent! I tried her curl line shampoo and conditioner but I may try the fragrance free because I do feel like those are intensely moisturizing. I will prob have to pick up the curl jelly, I have been eyeing it but was afraid it would have no hold.

I’m only two months into the curly girl method and the whole reason I discovered my curl/wave pattern and started researching is because of the Kirsten Ess shampoo. After using it the first couple of times I noticed my hair was waving after air drying.

Hey Courtney! Thank you so much for doing these videos. I am fairly new to the CG method, and an endurance runner to boot. I'd really love a weekly rundown of hair care ( ie. shampoo days vs. co wash days) and how to deal with your hair on run days. I did watch the pony - o video (thanks for saving me the $$) Also thanks for taking the time to explain things like moisture vs. protein balance and why glycerin might not work in hair. It's helped a lot!!

Kristin Ess is literally my favorite smelling products... I haven't tried it since I started CGM. I just found her curly line... I will look for the scent free and see what its like.

I just started my journey and I cannot get a good gel cast when I style when soaking wet and my waves just fall loose through the day.. Half of this stuff is confusing but your videos help so much!
My hair is straight and super shiny and waist length.I use the Kristen ess signature big bottles shampoo and condiotioner.I love how big it is ,it’ll last soooo long.I use the serum and the shine leave in.
I love my Kristin Ess. It has made a huge difference in my hair. I dont really like the smell but my hair looks so good it doesnt matter lol

I think it would be fun to see you do a wash day of the typical "CG starter" products usually recommended in FB groups and such. Something like Suave or VO5 to cowash, condition, leave in, and then style with a gel like LA Looks, Aussie Instant Freeze, or Herbal Essences Totally Twisted. I'm almost two years CG and pretty much stick with the cheap stuff with good results, so I'd like to see you give them a fair chance! :)

I bought these two months ago and was so excited but it made my scalp very itchy to where I couldn't keep my hands out of my hair. I stopped using and it stopped. It was one of the ingredients they use in the conditioners.

Hi Courtney! I have watched SO MANY of your videos during quarantine! Thank you for all the info! I was wondering if you detangle your hair at all before you wash, because it sure seems a lot less tangled than mine before I shower. :) I have to work pretty hard with my conditioner...should I get a detangler product to use before I shampoo?
I used this shampoo/conditioner and found white spots floating in the bottom of the shampoo after two weeks and tossed it. Haven't been a huge fan of the scents in the stylers in this line so I was excited to see a fragrance free version. Not sure if something was growing or if the formula was separating but didn't want to take my chances.
Since the curl jelly listed fragrance at ingredient 5 and you really loved it, maybe you can try a skin test on the inside of your elbow that way you can see how it reacts on your skin by itself. Also bless your heart for leaving that on all day even with your reaction. I had a similar reaction to an Innersense product and had to shower ASAP.
As soon as you said, “the *fragrance*” I remembered why I’ve never picked these up. After your Hairitage video I started checking how high up fragrance is and avoiding highly fragranced products.
Looking at your results, now I’m super sad! I might try the jelly, since it’s less strong and the better of the two products. I’ve got leave-ins I love, but good gels are hard to find.

I was thinking of buying the cowash but someone commented on a review video that it dried out their hair and caused hair loss. I really wanted to buy it so it might have been just one person but doesn’t anybody know anything about that??

I was so excited to try this line, right up until you mentioned the fragrance issue. Strong fragrances give me a really bad headache and nausea. Thank you, thank you for saving me some money, Courtney! I may still give the shampoo and conditioner a go, but the styling products won't be happening unless they take the fragrance out (or drop it dramatically). :(

Just a quick heads up on the Kristen Ess Shine Enhancing Conditioner, it has Isododecane in it. It is pretty far down the ingredients list, but it is not CG friendly. It is a water insoluble ingredient that adds slip, similar to a silicone. Use at your own risk but shouldn't be a problem in small amounts.
The reason diluting curl cream with water clumps your curls when applying, is because the product is too heavy. Curl creams are made for b type curls. I have wavy hair and my curls would only come out when I would clump for a long time or plop but switching to gels, and lighter creams give me a lot more volume! Hope this helps:)
Yes on the fragrance free! Fragrances irritate my scalp and face too. Yay for allergies that show up in adulthood!
Cantu came out with a new Avacado, and Flaxseed line. I haven't checked to confirm they are CG approved but I would love to see a video review of them if they are. ☺️
Would really like a One Brand Wash Day using Design Essentials Almond and Avocado line. They have a defining gel, a finishing anti-frizz and humidity mist, shampoo, condish, leave in, etc.

I also don't usually get a cast no matter what product I use and I get decent hold but I like a lighter hold anyway.

I used some from this line earlier and wow, the fragrance in the curl shampoo is STRONG, like REALLY STRONG...lol. So far aside from that, I enjoyed the products. The leave in detangling tonic was a fail for me, as I struggled with tangles while using it. ☹
Any suggestions on getting better clumps. I have tried brushing in product, plopping, and layering products and I still don't get many clumps it waves and curls, but just not many clumps.

I was going to purchase the Giovanni until you said it’s fairly stripping and my hair/scalp is so dry all the time yet when I use cowash my scalp is itchy so! The struggle is real! Haha

I wish I had your shine! I have baby fine hair strands with spiral curly,dry,dull,non growing hair. Been using naturally based products for 6yrs yet my hair has remained dry,dull,brittle.

What about products MyManeBio suggested? I'm waiting to get my results back. My hair is very fine, more dense, and probably low porosity - it hates oils, polyquats, and I think protein. I've tried all the high-end organic products, and they just make my hair too soft and straightens my 2A-C waves. I've been on my curl journey 2 1/2 years. Hopefully I'll get answers soon from MMB. 😊

Someone help! Here’s my issue:
So I had pin straight hair my whole life but when I turned 14 and cut it, it became super frizzy and poofy. My hair on the ‘inside’ of my head is silky smooth (like what it used to be like when it was straight) and is fine, and low porosity. My hair on the top layer of my head is super coarse and frizzy and high porosity (nothing like it used to be). It seems like this new type of hair is taking over my head since all of my smooth hair is the only one that’s falling out. Whenever I get out of the shower and scrunch my hair, it becomes pretty wavy (but still frizzy sadly) and then falls back straight after an hour or so. I don’t know what to do since I have a mixture of straight and wavy hair, low porosity and high porosity hair.
Do you have hard water? Perhaps that’s just one of the problems. If you do have hard water try installing a hard water filter in your shower head!
In the first few months of your CG journey, did you find you had to wash more than you do now? I'm really struggling with refresh day 3. Tips would be very very welcome and appreciated! I'm only 1 month in and am feeling a bit lost and frustrated. Although I have seen significant improvement to my day 1 curls which keeps me hopeful.
Im at the beginning of mine and i also find i have to wash more frequently than some other CG routines/curly haired people do. Everyones hair is different too so it might just be how your hair is
Hi Courtney, I’m a fellow oily girl. How is the stretching out wash days going? I tried it at one point but I couldn’t take it. Wondering if you’ve noticed less oil yet? I would be willing to try again if there’s a possibility of it eventually getting better. Thanks for taking one for team oil!
Hahaha I feel you friend! Yeah, stretching wash days is going terribly. After the video where I went 4 days, I have such a bad folliculitis flare that I have had to stop extending an start washing every other day religiously!

I had those in my hand like two days ago at target but I put it back because it smells so strong, like old mans cologne ☹️ ! Please let me know if the smell fades I really wanted to try this and the packaging was so cute. They also had a curl cream in a gray bottle too
The smell does fade. I dont care for it but my hair looks so good I just deal with it until it dries.
I think that the grey curl cream does have some silicones in them if you want to avoid them!
