Yes! Porosity isn't enough! You have to overlap porosity, density (if you have tons of hair or very little), fine vs coarse strands, AND your curl level (wavy to very tight curls). The ways these four things interact is what truly gives you a picture of YOUR hair, the products and techniques it will like, etc. 🙌

Many people have more then 1 type of porosity in their hair... For example, my top hair is a high porosity. However, the hair I had shaved off (undercut), that hair is more of low porosity.

Yup. Embrace Natural Beauty used to speak a lot about how different sections of her hair had wildly different porosities.

Jessica Pape same exact thing happened to me!! My undercut is now grown out (about 8 inches long) and the rest of my hair is very long. My undercut portion is very coarse and low porosity. The rest of my hair is fine to normal, and medium to high porosity. It’s quite annoying when trying to moisturize the bottom without over moisturizing the top!!

This actually helps me out a lot because I have very similar characteristics to both you and your sister's hair and it confused me because my hair both squeaked but took a long time to wet in the shower (my strands are thick). I also have to be very careful about using polyquats because it builds up instantly in my hair, making it look super greasy! I avoid polyquats in all my products! I also kept seeing UA-camrs putting globs and globs of product into their hair and my hair is about as long as yours and can only handle a pea-sized amount! And when you recommended the Curls Blueberry Bliss leave-in and Biosilk Gelee... I thought my hair hated protein, but there are silk amino acids in them and my hair absolutely loved the combo! EVERYTHING NOW MAKES SENSE!!! I really would like to get this test done for both me and my mom because there might be other things unique to my hair, but also I think my mom's hair is high porosity because she always struggles with how dry it is and I really don't know how to help her keep her moisture!

Princess Pea I recall Mell mentioning that high porosity hair can also be genetic and that natural curly hairs have a tendency to be higher porosity. Where your hair strand starts to curl, there will usually be a break in the cuticle layer. Makes sense to me.

I will be rewatching it several times to digest the content. I knew there was a reason your hair is so shiny and it wasn't all product choice. Super fine hair will almost always trick those home porosity tests. And i would actually theorize that your hair used to be higher porosity because of the old damage you had on the mids/ends, but that your regrowth is much lower porosity since you're being so gentle with it now. Having 2 different porosities can also cause flash drying in the roots and mids like you sometimes get.

So interesting. Just goes to show that there's a lot more to hair than just porosity! My hair needs sulfates to keep it from being weighed down by styling products. Gasp! I went through a bad period with limp curls, and after watching Dr. Dray's video began to wonder if my sulfate free shampoo was the culprit. After the first wash with my husband's Dove shampoo, the difference was amazing. And I'm someone who periodically clarified with the Suave.

  • @Wingsofscarlet

Well, that's pretty eye-opening and kind of a game-changer for me. I have had no idea of what my porosity could be except that my hair soaks up water fast but takes forever to dry. I didn't realize that the texture of my hair could effect how I determined my porosity. I could only guess that I had higher porosity hair based on its behavior, but maybe since my hair is really fine it's lower porosity? It would explain why my hair hates heavier butters and oils. I wonder if the test would explain why my hair loves protein but hates aloe (which seems to act like a protein for some people).

I mention this because my hair gets wet easily (even if I am working out). However, it dries differently, taking longer (hours) on the center. So funny! My hair is low porosity (I never really heat styled it, just dyed it now and again) and practically every product you recommended, my hair loved. I was wondering about that...! 😆

Wow this is the most helpful hair video I’ve ever watched. I was always confused why you would have high porosity hair since it was so healthy and shiny. My hair is also low porosity and fine, difference being my natural oil production. Now that I’ve realized I actually need to add oil to my hair, it’s more able to handle occasional protein. I would love to hear some recommendations for products/conditioners with amino acids. Thank you!

Now that we know hard vs soft water can affect the squeak test...I wonder if it would have a different result doing the hair in a cup of water test with your sisters water?!

I found the information that you are supposed to soften the water before doing this test.... hard water would affect the results.

Have you ever tried a scalp scrub before for oil buildup? I can genuinely feel the difference after I use one. When I clarify, I use the Not Your Mother's Naturals Black Charcoal and Moonstone line with the scalp scrub.

I hope you can share more about what types of protein are recommended for low porosity hair like yours. I've used all the ones you have shared: Gelatin mask, neutral protein filler, rice water etc. Wondering which ones are amino based. I have fine hair for sure and it's fairly shiny but the need for almost constant protein is real. When my balance of moisture to protein goes wrong my curls almost go away and my hair gets mostly wavy/straight with curls on just the last 4 inches. That 's always a sad wash day.

Courtney I would love to learn more about hair care and hard water! I have hard water and am only about a month in to my curly hair journey. A water softener is something I may install at home in a few years, will it help? What products or treatments are good for hard water?

I have fine to medium, low porosity hair. It gets wet fast, but I can literally see the water bead up on it sometimes. I washed my friends niece's hair recently. She has a ton of coarse, low porosity hair and it took a good while for her hair to get wet. I felt like i was running it under water forever before I gave up and put shampoo in it. I left the conditioner in extra long to make up for the thick tight cuticle and her hair turned out so beautiful. I wish i could wash and style it for her all the time.

This is exactly what my hair looks like after using the Shea moisture coconut and hibiscus line. My hair doesn't seem to do well with heavy products despite it being pretty thick. Wonder if my hair might be low porosity too 🤔

This is super cool! I love your chanel but never tried the products that you use because my hair is low porosity and I thought we had opposite hair types. Do you think the products that you use would work on someone with low porosity but thicker/coarser hair?

  • @MakingTheMetalBand

I think my hair might be similar to yours. We have a similar natural color, somewhat similar wave type though mine seems to be more S waves, possibly slightly less fine strands? though hard to say. I'm pretty sure my natural hair is also low porosity since it pretty much never tangles and is so silky it will slip out of claw clips and water droplets just sit on it forever. Alas, I'm growing out bleached hair but already have half natural and cut off the worst of it which seems you did also! For a long time I did mainly long hair care methods and had TB length hair but was never getting the results for my waves I wanted. After the cut I did a few days ago it is now similar length to yours to remove the majority of the highlights. My partner is also growing out his hair which is now at his shoulders and he has 3A-3B hair so we are both on our curly/wavy girl/boy journeys haha. The wavy hair is truly more fickle though versatile.
I found it interesting that you mentioned the issue with sulfates. If I try to CO wash or use most curly girl friendly shampoos I definitely get oily buildup on the scalp. That went away when I bleached my hair awhile ago so makes sense. I'm curious what your updated go to product list is and if there are good scent free options. I currently just do bedhead curl defining cream and the regular devacurl gel. No protein treatments etc. It is hard to pick products partly because I get severe migraines and hives from some artificial scents (hard to predict from online reviews so I usually try to go scent free).

Could you please make a video on how you fix your cowlick? If you've already made a video about it I'm sorry, I couldn't find it. I can't find any other videos from other people explaining how to fix it without using a flat iron or blow dryer. Thank you. :)

LOL, the exact same thing happened to me! I just got back the results and even though I thought I had very high porosity hair, I actually have naturally low porosity hair! My hair is medium density and normal to coarse in width and I've been doing the CG method for a year. I also switched from permanent hair dye (20 years applying it monthly) to henna about 6 months ago, which has made a huge difference in the health of my hair. I have medium to low porosity mid-shaft and high porosity ends, so once I get rid of those, I guess I'll also get rid of my products for high porosity hair...
My hair is medullated and quite coarse, so I never noticed that I also had some build up. I guess I need to start clarifying more often and choose lighter products from now on. Oh, and my hair type is 2C (in the canopy) to 3A (around the face and underneath). Anyway, I'll be following you even more closely now that I know that we have the same porosity. Love your videos and your down to earth personality! Hugs Laura from Spain ^_^
