    As a licensed cosmetologist, I will say that no one really teaches these crucial steps in school. I have naturally thin curly hair and have been doing half of the steps you do. With your knowledge in curly hair, I think you should have triple the subscribers. Add that to your channel. This was phenomenal. I seriously can’t wait to do my hair curly again! Thank you so much and I will share your channel. I now have a Dyson that works great but that diffuser looks awesome. I will also add that the reason why we don’t see this is because everyone is using the straightener. So this is definitely a good way to keep it healthy and natural looking. Good job!!

      What a compliment! Im flattered :) Thank you and I agree, a lot of what I learned was out on the field working with curls rather than being taught by cosmo school. I will say though, having curly hair myself did help me understand curly/wavy hair in a special way. Also, I have a Dyson now and let me tell you... never going back! lol

      I agree. School does nothing to teach the correct techniques and proper cuts for waves to coil hair types. I have natural med to tight spiral curls and was everyone’s Guinea pig model in school.
      We’d have guest teachers come in and they always wanted a go at me. No way, they still have this concept that they need to “tame” the curls and their only solution to that is to layer and thin the crap out of it and total go against the curl pattern and remove so much weight they wind up leaving it a thin, wispy mess, that they then try to cover up the poor cut by blowing it out straight.
      I’ve tried everything under the sun and now in my 50’s I’ve finally conquered the perfect routine with air drying and minimal heat applied. I get compliments daily and it’s the first thing people recognize about and remember me by (it’s like a living logo lol)
      Also if y’all are using anything other than a microfiber towel or old t-shirt y’all are creating breakage and frizz. Just like this stylist recommends.

    I am a single father to a six year old girl whose hair has become wavy this year, and my normal routine with her no longer works. I started searching for how I should style wavy hair for her and am so thankful to have found this video! Even after that, it still didn’t turn out right. I love my stylist, but I need someone who knows how to deal with my hair. It’s definitely intimidating to think about looking for a new one though.

    You are amazing! So many hair stylists (most I've ever gone to, actually) treat wavies as though we have straight hair. They seem to have been taught our hair is wrong instead of how they're treating it.

    • @sabrinabailey6437
      @sabrinabailey6437  2 роки тому +214

      YES! Since wavies straddle between the wavy and straight characteristics, a stylist that only knows straight will continue to treat it as such.

      Went in for a cut and color and made sure to tell her my hair was wavy/curly, but I was coming in on third day hair. She painfully raked her fingers through all my knots and said "Hmm, I don't think so. I think it's just knotted and you aren't using any heat tools." When she gave me a blowout and it came out straight, she was quick to tell me that my hair was actually straight and I just needed to take better care of it. Smh.

    • @roonilwazlib5402
      @roonilwazlib5402 2 роки тому +83

      @@litleangelbrook So painful to read 🫠 My experience is that every hairdresser told me that my hair is super dry and damaged when the frizzy poofy look was actually only because I used to always brush and blow dry it when I didn’t know that my hair was very wavy and I needed to style it differently. One time a hair dresser even said it needs to be cut a lot (and I believed him 🥲) because he thought it looked like that due to extreme damage. I’m still a tiny bit mad because he has curly hair himself and didn’t realize my waves at all in 10 years of going to him. My mom and I had to tell him that our hair is and always has been wavy after finding out everything thanks to the internet.

      Yes! I went into a stylist once and they noticed the subtle waves in my hair. I told them I had a hard time getting the waves to really come out, they said they could help. I told them my hair does not like heavy products or heat but they insisted that was the only way. Guess what, my hair was pin straight by the end and they said, "Oh, we were wrong, your hair is straight." Exasperating ☹️. But I've been working on my waves at home and they've been really becoming more pronounced. Only mistake I made was I gave myself a trim and ended up separating my curl families (I didn't know about that yet).

    I'm SO glad this popped up on my feed! This is exactly how my hair looks pre-wash and post-styling. I've ALWAYS thought that I had straight hair. Being Asian, without any access to biological family members, it's never been something that I thought of until this year. I remember I've always hated brushing my hair because it went poofy and I wasn't sure what was wrong since it wasn't obviously curly. Even after I discovered I had wavy hair, I kept doubting myself, even when I saw other Wavies on socials since theirs always seemed to be more obviously wavy without any product. Whereas mine could look pretty straight. But seeing the before and after pictures on this really helped me realize that I really DO have wavy hair. Thank you so much!!

Then I went to get highlights from my Asian stylist before and she tried to convince me I was mistaken about having wavy hair. The amount of Asian stylists who treat almost all Asians like we have bad straight hair. No it's not unruly straight hair, it's just not straight and you just don't have enough education. I told her how I always thought I had straight hair but it was actually just wavy hair that wasn't cared for right and it looked frizzy and puffy. She did not believe me. 😑

    This was great. I’ve had straight hair my entire life and have worn it short for 25 years. When Covid hit I decided to grow it out and to my shock it was wavy (almost exactly like the girl in this video). I think it was probably hormone change when I started menopause (1st cousins have wavy hair too). I’ve been at a complete loss. From finding out my curl number to shampoo and conditioner (I’ve never had to use conditioner before), then what product do I put in my hair at what stage and how to refresh it the next day. I’m such a newbie at this. I think I’ll have to find a new salon that has staff that specialize in curly hair. All these straight hair girls around me, no one can help. I’m going to try your method tomorrow and pray for success.
    Update: Yes! It worked. I used products I have currently and first added the foam then curl cream while I was still standing in the tub. Squeezed it in like you shown, used my microfiber turban to squeeze out the excess and then wrapped my hair up in it. Took it off about 30 minutes later and had those wonderful curl clumps. Then let air dry. Thank you! You’ve got yourself a new subscriber. 😁

Your explanations make it both easier to remember what to do (because it involves logical reasoning and not just memorization of instructions), and also makes me understand what I'm doing so I don't feel like I'm just naively performing some kind of superstitious ritual and hoping it works.
    Thank you!!!

      Take time with your hair and figure out what works for you. It took me over a year to figure out my hair, I just barely made progress last week. I found that creams and gels weighed my hair down sooo much. I started using Wave Maker from DevaCurl (I know the brand is controversial) and a volumizing foam from them as well. Then I put it up in a loose bun overnight and the outcome is beautiful.

    Recently my hair texture changed, from being absolutely straight to getting waves and defined curls in the front and only a bit more volume in the back of my head. The only thing I started doing when I realized was to go in with my hand after the shower, no product or anything. Now I know exactly what I have to do and maybe I can get the back of my hair to curl a bit and make it even 😅
    Thank you for uploading this! I feel like wavy hair is not talked about enough since everyone says it's just frizzy or straight. And even curly people know how to style theirs better since it's pretty obvious they had curly hair from the beginning and had to learn how to style it properly or else it would be a mess.

    I'm just starting my curly hair journey, I've been brushing and blow drying my hair straight for as long as I can remember, so it never even occured to me that my hair might be curly or wavy. I am a natural redhead in my 40s, and since I was a toddler I had one wavy section in the back of my hair while the rest was straight. When I hit my 20s that section became a tight wave/coil, then in my mid 30s to now the wave started slowly moving towards the front of my hair. I was gettin a relaxer in the back, since the front section wouldn’t even hold any curl. I decided to forgo the relaxer after 20 years and attempt to get the wave to hold in the front while keeping the back from being a frizzy mess. This feels like a good combo of techniques I’ve seen previously for my “complicated” hair and I can’t wait to try it!

  • @gracewolf16
    @gracewolf16 Рік тому +3

    Haidresser here since the mid 80's Been doing similar method since the early 90's. I find it works and looks better if you don't spend so much time perfecting the underneath layers with head upside down. Leave that area damp and flip head back right side up. If you want volume on top just tilt head from side to side or lean back on chair. This way you can see exactly how the outer layers are behaving and you can gently adjust and perfect each tendril.

    • @kyrieeleison2793
      @kyrieeleison2793 Рік тому +3

      Yes, this is what I learned from styling my hair as well. Upside down drying make my curls/waves in the front messy, whereas with the side-to-side and leaning-back methods I can pay closer attention to the top layer of curls all around (which are also the most damaged/frizzy from being exposed to the sun all day). That's IF I'm drying it with heat. Honestly, my hair always looks better when I just let it air dry, then give the roots a bit of a lift with my fingers, but my hair is much thicker and more plentiful than this person's hair, so that probably makes it easier to get volume.

    I have been trying the CGM for two and a half years as a 2a-2c. Your video really helped remind me of what I quit doing and to go back and try it again. I totally respect the whole Black hair care industry and all the products and techniques that have been developed over the years and thank all of you for the wisdom you so freely share with us Caucasian wavys and curlies who never knew what to do to enhance our textures. I was adding some “ethnic” products to my routine only semi-successfully before finding the CGM. I still struggle to get a look on wash day that I would want to wear in public and end up looking best on day 2 when my curls turn more to waves and the frizz is brushed into my waves. Yes, I do brush! My hair does not tangle. It has never been straightened, permed, dyed, teased, or anything and is silky smooth even in its frizzy waves and spirals. Your tips today reminded me of things I can do to combat frizz and I can’t wait to try and see if I can make it work. Thank you so much for this wavy video!

    A few months ago I used a sample hair mask I had laying around and I was shocked to see such tight waves, even past my first brush out while air drying. It got me very curious about what my hair should look like, if I'm actually giving it the care it deserves.
    Normally just with air drying I'll see a more defined wave/curl with a full air dry but it will mostly fall out after the first full brush. I've been a religously no product, no heat, wash every 3-4 days girl with long thick hair. Recently a hair dresser convinced me to try a leave in spray that I use after every wash now. I missed using it one time and I HATED how my hair felt. I feel like with it I have more definition, less frizz, and an easier time working with it all the way to the next wash.
    This video has made me feel more confident in finding a specialist to ask if I should be doing anything different. I've felt shy because I don't feel like I match the profile of someone that is "curly enough". What if they laugh at me? However if the girl's hair looked like mine does after living in a bun maybe I am "curly enough". I'm proud of my hair and I want to make sure I'm taking care of it.

    I like to say that my hair has an identity problem. It is very curly in the back, curly with some wavy peices on the sides then slick straight up front. I have tried everything. Curly girl method, creams, hair spray, even a curling iron then twisting and pinning. I have tried special shampoos and scrunching serums, nothing has worked. Is there anything I could do to make the front part of my hair look like the rest of my head? I will say that as a child I had big chunky curls and my mom wanted me to have spiral curls so in the early 90's I had perms (against my wishes). My hair has been frizzy and wavy for years now at the age of 38 my hair is ....well, as I described earlier.

      I have the same issue - one thing that's helped is getting it layered, as the shorter my hair is, the curlier it gets. Back in high school my hair was long enough that you could only really tell it could be curly were the wispy bits around my forehead that never grow out. Layers have also stopped my ponytail looking a disaster (curling at the under part while almost straight on the top!)

When she gets ahold of my hair I turn out really poofy with not much definition. She uses a diffuser but I think she’s used to doing it for people with less full hair. Part of my issue is I have so many different curl patterns I have some full ringlets about the size of a finger and some waves. My underneath hair on my neck gets pinky sized ringlets. Sometimes it seems like it depends on the day what they want to do. Makes me remember why I started flat ironing in the first place.

I know it’s time consuming, but your layers on top might just need more time with curly friendly products, sleeping in a silk bonnet, using a cotton t-shirt after your shower, etc…..and finger coiling before diffusing. Just a thought……it’s all such a journey!!

    I was so inspired (and relaxed...such a zen video) by this that I hopped in the shower immediately to try out these tips with products I had on hand but hadn't really known how to use. I AM AMAZED!!!!!! I shampoo with Redken Volume Injection. I am trying to use up a bottle of Olaplex conditioner, but I had a trial size of Living Proof Restore Repair Mask, so I used that for my conditioner instead. I clipped my hair up and let that sit for 5-7 minutes. Then, I used a wet brush to comb through my hair in sections like you demonstrated, making sure to use lots of water. Then I turned the shower off, flipped my hair over, and scrunched it with Aveda Phomollient Styling Foam. I added a step, brushing through my hair with a Denman brush with tips I'd seen in other videos, just to ensure I really distributed the mousse and did a little extra twirling to my hair. I flipped my hair over again and scrunched in Living Proof Curl Definer cream, which I had gotten a trial size of. Then, I used a microfiber towel to scrunch the extra water out. I sprayed the heck out of my hair with hairspray (I have fine wavy hair, and am used to seeing my curls fall), and diffused my hair upside down. I have NEVER seen my curls look SO curly, so shiny, or so frizz-free. I am literally SO tickled. My husband is laughing because I keep going to take pictures of my hair. THANK YOU for such a lovely video guide. Your explanations of why you are doing each step in a specific way was so helpful. I'll be sharing with all my wavy-haired friends!

    How crucial is diffusing? I thought the go part meant no need to use a blow dryer. Would you not recommend air drying? Learned some great tips as well. Thank you. (:

      Diffusing will give your waves/curls volume. For most of us “wavies” the difference between air drying and diffusing is night and day.

      I think diffusing is a matter of personal preference really. For me, I can't get my waves dry unless I at least hover diffuse my roots. I do get the best volume when I diffuse my wavy hair. I think diffusing really is the "setting" step. If you rely on air drying you often can't move much and you definitely can't touch your hair. I think that's harder for me; it takes my hair about 12 hours to air dry and I'm not going to sit completely still for hours waiting around doing nothing while it happens 😖.

    I remember my dad always telling me I have straight hair but as I grew up I started to develop my curls. And I have recently become engrossed with how to treat my hair right and especially since I am from a mixed family I know my hair can be so much more than the frizzy, puffy, catastrophe it is now 😂 thank you so much for this video! I’ve learned so much and I’m so excited for my curly hair journey

    I really wish I was in NY! I have part wavy and part curly hair. When I got the salon they either want to straighten it or they want to put a dime size amount of gel and send me on my way. An hour later I look like a frizz ball 🤦 glad we live in the age of UA-cam!

    By sheer chance, I'm getting to live/see the difference between what wavy vs curly and coarse vs. fine hair will need when styling. My teen's thick yet fine hair began going curly at puberty and is now 3a while my own thick, coarse hair is a wavy 2b/2c. His routine is a shower or misting his hair to clump his curls and adding 1-2 pumps of air dry cream. That's it, his curls are shiny and fully defined for most of the day and he's off. My own hair requires leave-in conditioner, finger curling, and gel + hair spray for definition/hold plus a little hair oil to avoid frizz/puffiness. It also takes a minimum of 30 minutes to diffuse, even though it's barely at chin level. The other day I dried my son's hair with my diffuser and it took ...5 minutes. And he was whining with impatience, lol!

    Beautiful results! I'm a naturally curly girl, and I will definitely try your method! I have straightened my hair a lot with a straigtening iron, and when I want to wear it curly, it seems that it has lost its curl pattern memory. So I've been doing robe curls and love the way it works. However, the curls don't look nearly as hydrated and juicy as what you have demonstrated in your video. Thanks for sharing your knowledge!

    This was amazing and informative As someone who has fine, wavy hair I never knew to do all of these steps! I’ve been embracing my natural wavy hair for awhile but never knew how to make my waves look strong and healthy.. until now ! 😊

    Thank you for taking the time to explain each step!! I've always worn my hair straight, thinking it was, but have recently discovered it's actually wavy if I let it be. Thought I was imagining it as its not super wavy like some people's, I'm not of a 2A, but am learning to embrace it and bring out my natural texture 😊 my hair stylist still insists on drying it straight though 😱 I wish I had a stylist like you that takes the time to do it properly! You mention sleeping in a pineapple, what is that?

      Thank you for watching! A pineapple is just a high ponytail by your forehead to help preserve your curls while sleeping

      Thanks for replying! I've been trying plopping and my hair is super wavy when I let it out of the plop, but it drops out a lot - any tips for keeping it really wavy?

    Did you ever rinse the conditioner out? I watched it twice but didn’t see the rinse out process.
    I’ve been on my wavy journey for a little o er two years and I’ve given up on trying to get the definition I want because it sacrifices volume and I can’t stand how flat my hair is when I style it like this video.
    We didn’t get to see how the front looked “after.”

    I do some of this for my curls from trial and error(s) but learned tons of new tips here. I didn't know that about the warm water. I'm contemplating adding diffuser. Definitely adding a T-shirt! Thanks so much for the in depth info.

    I was born with really tight curls but as I got older I just lost them. Whenever I get my hair layered and shorter it’s easier for my curls to come back but I’ve never found an actual routine to make them how they used to be . I have a very similar curl pattern to the girl in the video so that helps a lot

    When do you detangle? And if you're getting a cut done should they cut before the wash and style routine?

    I am so grateful that I saw your video on my feed!!! I have always thought i had straight hair, but then i noticed my hair was wavy when wet and then it got frizzy after i brushed it out when it was dry. I researched ways to maintain it and I found that i should use mousse and maybe gel. No other routine worked as well as your routine. Just did it and my hair looks fabulous! And my boyfriend likes it too! ❤😂 💓
