  • Playing around with the manual torpedo calculation in Silent Hunter 4. Nooby, I know.
In case anyone wants to know the basics, this i how you do it:
NOTE: This is only assuming you are playing with auto targeting. Some of the methods will not work on 100% realism. See www.subsim.com/radioroom/showt...
    for a guide on that.
FURTHERMORE: If you want an easier walkthrough with text included in the video, check out my noob-version:
    • Silent Hunter 4 Manual...
    1. Identify your target.
Your targeting-computer needs to know the mast height for it to estimate range accurately. First, find your target with periscope-view and lock onto it by pressing "L". Bring up the recognition-manual with the "N" key. Flip through it until you find the correct ship (can be tricky). Then press the little red "ok" box to choose it.
    2. Start the position keeper by pressing the white button on the left panel so that it lights up red.
It will keep track of the ship and make sure your torpedoes go where they should.
    3. Estimate range by clicking the range-tool on the TDC-dial to the right. A "ghost image" should appear. Drag this image until the waterline of it reaches the top of the mast of the bottom image. Relase, and press the red button to the upper left on the dial to send the data to the TDC. You should redo this to get a more accurate value once the target gets closer.
    4. Estimate angle on bow (AOB). To do this, you need to open up the map. Zoom in so that you have both your sub and the ship you are targeting in view. Now click on the angle-calculator-thingy and measure the angle from the ships bow, to your sub like I did in the clip, starting in front of the target, drawing the first line along the centre to about the middle of the ship, then draw the second line down to the centre of your sub. The angle that shows up should now be entered into the TDC with the dial. Remeber that if your target changes heading you must take a new AOB reading.
Don´t forget to send the data to the TDC after every estimation-step.
    5. Estimate target speed. The speed estimation on the chronometer was broken at release. Hopefully it will be fixed with patch 1.2. Until then you have to estimate it by observing wake-size and checking the speed on the map (slow, medium, fast).
    Enter your estimated value.
    6. In the left panel you can then set how deep you want your torpedoes to run (leave it alone if you are noob :)) and you can set a "spread" angle for each torpedo to compensate for the targets movement since it takes a while for the torpedo doors to open.
    7. When happy with all settings, fire away!

Look at it this way: the little white arrow pointing upwards at the bottom of the dial is your ship, and the rotating dial represents the target ship and its heading compared to you. That means the AoB is the angle from which YOUR SUB would appear, seen from the enemy vessel. If you by measuring on the map come up with the value 56 deg. all you have to do is put the dial between the "5" and "6" (numbers are reduced by a factor of ten for some reason).

Threedotsdead, thanks for the informative tutorial. Its been a while since I've played the SH series, but this should get make back into the groove.
A for bletsoburger, when you run out of quarters and zits for your "noob" settings, take this tutorial, sim, and historical setting a little more seriously.

@ComputerGeek1999 Depends on where you hit it. If you hit the ammunition storage it goes down in seconds. But yeah, usually you´ll need two or maybe three.

    Hehe, well thanks I guess:)
If I remember correctly (haven´t been playing for a few months) you hold the shift button while pressing the arrow keys or moving the mouse. Hope that helps.

... so they couldn't move very quickly with a crippled BB. I dropped under them, wiggled around a bit, popped up right next to a Mogami, dropped back down, popped up inbetween another Fuso and the Yammy, dropped back down, popped up with a line on my aft tubes, shot them, dropped back down, event view let me know i sank it, and i peaced out. The dusky stormy weather helped me avoid the DDs and CLs, but all in all i learned alot from that stalk.

Yeah, when setting AOB the dial only goes from 0 to 18 (I think) representing 0 to 180 degrees. So if you have a 71 reading, set the dial to 7,1. If you get 85 set it to 8,5 and so on.

@richyloike When I did the video you could only estimate speed by looking at wake size etc, but they´ve patched it since, so now you can use the stopwatch. You look at your target, click it once, then wait a while and click it again (not 100% sure about this, but play around a little and you´ll figure it out).
The video was recorded using fraps.

When the target is at the proper range. The closer you are, the greater the accuracy, and the less time the enemy has to perform evasive maneuvers. But you also want to keep your distance in case you miss and have to escape and to minimize their chances of spotting your periscope.
Of course it all depends on time of day and weather conditions.
So basically: trial and error :)

as far as the convoys go, I've been able to sink a Fuso and a Yamato in a convoy. They're the biggest ships i've been able to destroy, yet, but I did it by scooting around under the convoy on silent running. I gave the Fuso a 4 torp spread, sank it, let them go in crazy circles looking for me while i slowly got away, went upstream a bit farther, reloaded torps (realistic torp reload takes forever), waited for the convoy, gave the yamato a 4 torp spread, crippled but not sunk....

@ComputerGeek1999 For the ship in the vid, 1 just in the middle or 1º degree in front is enought.
For destroyers, if you hit just near middle, 1; if you hit him near propellers-stern, 2, the first one will destroy his engines, probably.
    S!

I´m quite a bit of a noob when it comes to this game actually, so I didn´t even know you can´t see them on the map on ultra realism... I looked around on subsim dot com and found a nice guide though, but it looks really complicated. I´ll include the link to it in the video-description.

wow, i really like all the stuff you have to do to get a hit. what type of game is this(for making a bunch of calculations and stuff)? seems a lot me fun the mw2.

Yes. One of the buggiest games I´ve ever played. The stopwatch thingie that was supposed to calculate speed literally did nothing, which was very confusing since the manual referred to it a lot. Mast heights of ships were also off meaning distance-measuring worked poorly at best.

  • @threedotsdead
    @threedotsdead  16 років тому

No, I meant a difference in the sinking-time of ships and such...

Hello and thanks for your comment. I also made a similar tutorial, but with step-by-step text in the video itself. UA-cam won´t let me link to it, but if you´re interested you can find it on my channel.

Well, in my patrol i was able to sink the lead DD, and then sneak into the middle of the convoy, sinking 2 merchants before having to run away. One DD was looking for me, but at the wrong place i managed to escape undetected.

Hey, speaking about the AOB.. what if you get an angle of 71? The number 7 and 1 are not next to the other... what i should do?
