  • From Subsim.com in April 2007, legion78 uploaded one of the first guides to Silent Hunter 4--Wolves of the Pacific aimed at new players trying to learn the game. Not only is this an important part of Subsim history, but it kept players in the game who would have quit in frustration, so was the model for my series of tutorials, all directed toward new players. It remains tremendously useful.

    Mate, this is bloody brilliant, helped me put so much with getting started and used to the game.

    I just "found out" about this game yesterday, downloaded it and played submarine school today. As all new players to this game, I'm having a though time passing the convoy attack mission on sub school... Anyhow, what I really want to say is that I just wish I achieve the same gameplay as you do! Man! Those calculations... Dead on!! Impressive, in my opinion! Cheers from Portugal!

    The bearing compass is available with the course ruler tool only if the small compass above the ruler tool is opened up. That is the "help" position and it gives you the bearing compass at the end of your line to help you draw it at the correct bearing. This hasn't changed through all the SH4 versions.

    The main window is the external camera. You can move forward and backward with the up and down arrows, steering with your mouse. You can actually follow the torpedoes under the water, or skip ahead of the torpedoes for an overhead view of the target to see how the torpedoes strike.
    The small inset is the automatic event camera. It shows whatever the game thinks you'd be interested in, planes on final approach, depth charges exploding or torpedoes about to hit the target.

    How come no one has said thatches guy sounds like Jon Favreau? ... great video btw, been looking for a simplistic straight forward explanation of this process.

    @10:45 Not sure if it is modeled into the game or not, but the speed of your sub affects the wake size created by the periscope slicing through the water. The faster you are going in your sub, the stronger the wake created. A stronger wake takes longer to dissipate into the surrounding waves enough to where the human eye can no longer detect it through all the noise of the waves. And this is particularly important when it comes to airplanes being able to spot you in the water. And when you're near enough to ships, best practice is to pop the scope up, quickly take a peek around, and then bring the scope back down as quickly as possible. In other words, minimize the time the scope is up to avoid detection by nearby ships. And don't go speeding around the waters submerged with your scope up, either. I am not sure if this game models scope damage, but that is a very good way to damage your scope.

    • @RockinRobbins13
      @RockinRobbins13  2 роки тому +1

      Yes, in Silent Hunter 4 your visibility with scope up is profoundly affected by your speed. The damage aspect isn't replicated, so far as I can tell. I have always erred on the side of accuracy instead of safety when shooting and won't shoot with the scope down. I shoot, then lower the scope to wait for the booms when shooting at warships. I try not to shoot at warships. The war ends when Japanese merchants are no more.

    • @shanejohns7901
      @shanejohns7901 2 роки тому

      @@RockinRobbins13 I think some warships are good to shoot at. Carriers and Battleships are excellent targets, and they are warships. Perhaps you meant that you don't shoot at warships that have anti-sub capabilities?

  • @RockinRobbins13
    @RockinRobbins13  12 років тому

    The event camera (the small inset window) comes on automatically as interesting things happen. That includes torpedoes nearing their targets.
    You can also select an external camera and move around freely above and under water to see the torpedoes on the full screen.

    Good vid. I was thinking about not even sinking the time into learning, but this makes it look worth it.

  • @shanejohns7901
    @shanejohns7901 2 роки тому +1

    @15:10 I don't believe it's about minimizing torpedo work. I am pretty sure you want the 90 degree shots for other reasons. The 90 degree shot creates the widest possible sonar profile of the ship. Torpedoes with onboard sonar suites have an easier time seeing the target via active pinging when the largest amount of surface area of the ship is facing the torpedo sensors. When you're dealing with WWII era subs and earlier, your biggest concern is your torpedo glancing off the target and exploding some distance away from the target. To minimize this problem, you fire at 90 degree angles. At 90 degrees, the shot is perfect because it has a 0 percent chance of deflecting/glancing off the enemy hull. And then your main issue to worry about is the high incidence of duds during that time period.

    • @RockinRobbins13
      @RockinRobbins13  2 роки тому

      In WWII there are no torpedoes with onboard sonar, except for the slow and easily avoided Cutie. The Cutie was designed to snag a lurking DD who was using its listening gear at low speed. It only worked a couple of times.

    • @shanejohns7901
      @shanejohns7901 2 роки тому +2

      @@RockinRobbins13 If you bothered reading the entire post, I made that clear. With WW2 era subs and earlier, 90 degree shots are to avoid glancing. Once torpedoes got onboard sonar, 90 degree shots also serve to maximize sonar returns.

    I nearly gave up on this game! (If it wasnt for this tutorial..) I would have gone into darkness and forgotten forever..but now; its wine and women from here on..!

      I prescribe a visit to Subsim.com, the place where you can learn from people who have played this game for nine years. My Sub Skippers' Bag of Tricks thread is a college course on how to think and act like a submariner, making people who can't find anything on their nav map into effectuve skippers very quickly.

      it was because I was playing on 100% realism lol... I understand now that most players will at least allow attack map updates. and truthfully it doesn't make any sense to play 100% realism as a captain should be able to rely on their crew as in the where is my crew syndrome.. watching sub movies it's a lot faster than in game so anything to make things faster makes more sense. the captain should just look through the parascope and call the shots..

    @zero13827 This video was done in 2007 with version 1.1. He is using no mods at all. He shows the attack map for just a few seconds in this tutorial and it shows nothing at all but a symbol for the sub, symbol for the target, a velocity vector for the target and that's about it. Please explain what you mean by the "whole" around the boat.

    I was more concerned with the bearing indicator that overlays the sub itself with range rings. Opening the help compass does not provide me this overlay. Thank you in advance for your help with this.

  • @RONNIEJNZN

    I have the same question I've seen already posted. Where does the bearing overlay with ranges rings come from. NOT the bearing rose that comes up with the tool helper.

    I'm not sure how legion78 made this video. He obviously was using Silent Hunter 4, Wolves of the Pacific. He doesn't appear to be using any mods. I'm not in agreement with his methods, but it is an important part of the history of the game, from a time when even the experts were learning how to run a submarine. I have to ask, why do you need a probability corridor and search pattern if you already have the target dead to rights on radar?

      It depends on the height of the periscope head above water. If it's high you can see for 10 miles or more.

    wow I just tried to play this thru the tutorial and got confused and came here. nice tutorial, but this is too difficult, beside the low resolution is very difficult to see... Do you recommend any good, more recent submarine sims ? I loved that nuclear sub sim from 1990s and wanted to replay something like that in 2020.

    Dave, the game runs fine on 2 gigs of memory with anything faster than a 2 gig processor. The important thing, however is the video card. A card that runs the game blazing fast is the Nvidia 9800 GT which can be bought on eBay for about $35.00. CHEAP! Have fun.

    had this game since 2007 and play it now in 2018, in my opinion its a thousand times better than silent hunter 5, I love shooting planes down in this the sound effects of it seem so realistic. And with the 1.4 patch this game is pretty much bug free whereas silent hunter 5 is full of bugs, way too many to name although i could if i wanted. The only thing I still can't do is get a firing solution manually.

    • @RockinRobbins13
      @RockinRobbins13  6 років тому

      Well, this video won't help you with that at all. But I have other videos on the Dick O'Kane manual targeting method and the John P Cromwell method that will turn you into a manual targeting wizard overnight.
      They are basically adaptations of U-Boat shooting procedures to the very different American TDC. Dick O'Kane and Eugene Fluckey both used very similar shooting techniques when they were appropriate.
      If you enjoy the sounds in the game, my modding team is responsible for Fall of the Rising Sun Ultimate Edition. We have a completely revamped sound system that will curl your toes! Head over to subsim.com and it's a free download.

    Wow... @ 3:15 so many lines drawn to intercept 1 trader... :PP
    I would understand if it would have been a task force or a convoy lols... for single straying traders I just do my own thing, that I taught myself by watching about 4-5 other techniques. I cannot explain it beacuse its not the most accurate and it's actually kinda stupid :D what I do is start measuring my distance to him, enemies course, my distance to that course, his speed, then make radials to estimate speed/time... it worked! :P
